Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Peter: It's grit—grit and values. Grit comes from values. Grit comes from having an aim, a mission.Peter Rostovsky's fintech startup, Raiseway, grew out of his personal experience helping a friend raise money for his startup. Exploring the possibility of investment crowdfunding, he was flummoxed by the sheer number of portals to choose from. At the time, there were over 40, a count that has now topped 70.“That kind of started this very long exploration into the execution problem with investment crowdfunding for founders of startups and small businesses,” he says, having learned that crowdfunding can be difficult.Last year, Peter asked me to serve as an advisor to Raiseway, and I was honored to accept. He is an advisor to The Super Crowd, Inc., a public benefit corporation.Raiseway is potentially game-changing because the vast majority of businesses in the country that can benefit from crowdfunding are small and can't afford expensive consultants but can afford to use an app that will guide them through and, using AI, help them execute their crowdfunding campaigns.Peter has two critical tips for folks looking to crowdfund:* Assess your community. Before you launch, assess your community to determine how large, accessible and warm it is. * Don't bet on “if you build it, they will come.” To get people to invest, you need to drive people to the investment opportunity thoughtfully and strategically. They won't find it on their own.In building Raiseway, Peter leverages his superpower: grit.AI Podcast Summary* Devin Thorpe interviews Peter Rostovsky, the founder and CEO of Raiseway, a crowdfunding app for entrepreneurs.* Raiseway is designed to streamline the crowdfunding process and help entrepreneurs accelerate their fundraising journey.* The alpha version of Raiseway is currently available for free use.* Peter's work with Raiseway could completely alter the investment crowdfunding landscape.* Raiseway aims to make crowdfunding more accessible and affordable for small businesses and startups.* Peter's key tip for entrepreneurs considering crowdfunding is to thoroughly prepare and evaluate their community and connections before starting.* Peter's superpower is his grit and determination, which he developed through his experiences as an immigrant and in running his own business.* Peter believes that being okay with failure and having a few wins under your belt can help develop grit.* Raiseway can be accessed through the app; contact Peter directly. How to Develop Grit As a SuperpowerPeter developed grit as he grew up. Born in St. Peterburg, his family moved first to Moscow and later to Bryansk, a city he describes as a “hellhole.” Later, still a teenager, he immigrated to the United States, facing a fresh set of cultural challenges. The difficulties adapting to new situations, cultures and individuals helped him develop the grit he deploys to build his business.Peter faced a challenge recently. After publicly announcing the launch of the alpha version of the software would happen on April 15, the startup missed the deadline. He admits feeling ashamed due to missing the self-imposed but now public due date. After worrying that he couldn't possibly recover, he took responsibility for getting the process back on track and, within weeks, got the product launched. It is now available as a free download for a limited time for those interested in help with their crowdfunding campaigns, willing to provide feedback.Peter offers some advice for developing grit. “I am a former F-student through and through,” he says. He acknowledges that the learned helplessness phenomenon applied to him. The key to overcoming it is to “get a couple wins under your belt.” “You can point to them in your life and say, ‘Well, no, I'm not a failure. I did this, this and that.' It's not only professional, it's personal as well,” he says.By following Peter's example and advice, you can make grit a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest-Provided ProfilePeter Rostovsky (he/him):Founder & CEO, RaisewayAbout Raiseway: Raising money with crowdfunding is prohibitively hard for businesses that need it the most - small businesses and startups. This podcast with Rick Hummel was recorded during Spring Training 2019. I'm reposting at the news of his passing because of how elequontly he reflects on his life. You'll hear Rick share about his love for baseball and how he became a sportswriter. You'll hear about his receiving the phone call informing him that he had been elected the the writer's wing at the Baseball Hall of Fame, the year that Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken, Jr. were inducted. He shares stories from his (then) 42 years of Cardinals' Spring Trainings, first in St. Peterburg, then when they moved to Jupiter in 1998. His nickname was “The Commish”, partly for his organizing the NCAA basketball lottery each year but also from the respect he had from his colleagues in the baseball world. I hear that two former baseball commissioners even referred to him as “The Commish”. Rick was a very kind man with an encyclopedic knowledge of Cardinals baseball. I sat within 20 feet of Rick for 23 spring trainings and he always made a point to visit our portion of the press box to say goodbye when spring training wrapped up and he was on his way back to St. Louis. The 4 “Life at the Ballpark” podcasts we recorded together are some of my favorites, and this is the first. When I visited Busch Stadium in St. Louis for my birthday a couple of years ago Rick, who the press box is named for, insisted that I have the microphone to announce the game time temperature. That's the kind of guy he was. Honored to know you, sir.

We've been speaking about the concept of tolerance , to be Sovel . As we mentioned from Rav Wolbe, a lot of this comes from the beautiful sefer Tomar Devorah, by Rav Moshe Cordevero, on the 13 attributes of mercy, based on the pasuk in Micha , Mi El Kamocha. The Pele Yoetz, under the topic of Devekut , says that a person should read the Tomar Devorah once a month, and try his best to live up to these Middot of Hashem. In Arot Elim, another sefer by the Pele Yoetz, he includes a shorter version of these 13 attributes, in order for one to review constantly. Furthermore, Rav Yitzhak Blazer, the great student of Rav Yisrael Salantar, also known as Rav Yitzhak of Peterburg, made a list of kabalot , as many great rabbis do, and on his list of things to work on was to work on his Ahavat Habriot/ loving your fellow people, and he too said that the way to act on this is to constantly review the sefer Tomar Devorah . So if that's the case, we are going to try to do that; to work on the 13 Attributes of Mercy as they show up in the sefer Tomar Devorah. The first thing Rav Cordevero writes (in what we'll call the introduction), is that a person is supposed to emulate his Creator, as it says when man was created, “ Let us make man, with our form and our image.” That means, in a sense (and of course it doesn't really mean this), man is created in the image of God. We can imagine a man up there in the heavens, and there are certain, traits that are symbolized by that. Of course, God is not anything physical or human, but we are , in some way, in our form and our image, like God. But he says that it's not enough to, so to say, look like. The main thing, he says, is to act like, and that's the job of this pasuk , Mi El Kamocha; to act like God, not just to have the potential that we were, so to say, created in His image. We have to act in that image. We have mentioned this recently, but we're now going to go into it in depth. The first Middah is called Mi El Kamocha / who is like You. This means that Hashem is what he calls Melech Ne'elav, a King that's disgraced, Sovel Elbon/God tolerates disgrace, to a point that's not fathomable. And he makes two points: 1-nothing is ever hidden from God's supervision, without a doubt. 2-there isn't a second that man is not being sustained from the sustenance that God gives him. And therefore, it never happened that man sinned, and at the moment he was sin, God was not giving the ability to sin against Him. God tolerates this and continues to give His bounty and allow the person to move and function. It's not that God can't stop it at any second, because He can, as we see from the story of Yeravam, who had a sudden stroke. God should technically say, “If you're sinning, sin with your power, not with Mine.” Yet God continues to give His bounty, which is not fathomable. That's why God is called me Mi El Kamocha . The term El means both Baal Hessed and powerful . That means God gives Hessed, and He can take it back, but He doesn't. Before we go further into how a human being is supposed to act, we will expound upon the point of God constantly pumping energy into creation. It's the pasuk in Nehemiah, perek ט that we say every single day. You made the heavens and the heavens above the heavens, and all the hosts, the earth and everything that's upon it (lions and tigers, bears), the oceans, and everything that's inside of them ( all the deep sea creatures). And now for the four magical words: וְאַתָּ֖ה מְחַיֶּ֣ה אֶת־כֻּלָּ֑ם And You constantly give life to all of them. And that's why the heavenly beings bow to You . Because they know how much You are responsible for creation. In another sefer, Pardes Rimonim, written by Rabbi Cordevero (6 th gate, 8th chapter), he says, that this is the meaning of God is constantly renewing creation. Because every day, God is pumping energy in for that day. And if God would not decide to rejuvenate creation, everything would stop. Before we go on to how human beings should be tolerant, we're going to further study God's level of tolerance.
Did your parent ever tell you to "Don't throw the ball in the house"?What Happened when you disobeyed and broke a bowl, plate, or special figurine?Did you try to hide what you did by gluing the broken pieces back together?More than likely after your parents found out and the ceramic ware couldn't be fixed it was thrown out in the trash. You probably feel the same way after some of the things that have happened in your life that you are junk and that God has no need for you and just discards you.In this episode, I share about how God can use the broken pieces of your life to create something wonderful and even more valuable that the original.I talk about how a trip to St. Peterburg, Russia and seeing the mosaic artwork at the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood reminded me of how God can use those broken pieces to make a masterpiece.I also share about the ancient Japanese artform called "Kintsugi" and how an artist will take a broken ceramic ware and add something special to fill the cracks to make it more valuable than before.Scriptures:Isaiah 64:8Jeremiah 18:4Ephesians 2:10To check out the music in this episode:Introduction- "Dust till Dawn" by Dusty Decks https://www.epidemicsound.com/track/FhKgzwY2Jm/"Broken Pieces" by Gavin Luke https://www.epidemicsound.com/track/J5X91AXv9G/

(CWC) is a new national resource based in Tampa Bay, Florida that will serve as a Caregiver Wellness Alliance bringing together key stakeholders from the government, business and civic sectors to increase attention to and awareness of Caregiver wellness needs, supports and resources. The CWC also provides direct education and holistic wellness programming in support of informal family Caregivers and formal professional frontline Caregivers or health and human service professionals. I hope to bring a particular program to social workers who are struggling with significant burnout exacerbated by COVID- I know I was one of them! The CWC is the home of my Yoga4Caregivers Seva (selfless-service) Project which currently has nearly 20 Yoga Teachers and 100 Caregivers across the country. Many of these volunteers are Caregivers, former family Caregivers or military spouses. We have already proudly started to do some employee wellness programs for frontline medical staff for corporate clients and we have a significant project in the Tampa Bay area under way with executive city leadership of St. Peterburg aimed at improving community health and wellness for Caregivers and Caregiver city employees. Finally we are also hoping to implement an LGBTQ Caregiver virtual wellness center and are in the process of establishing strategic advisors and sponsors.
