Joining me on the podcast today is Matt Kaminer, the youngest person to qualify for the Ironman Man World Champs and full time medical student. Last year, while I was taking on the challenge of running 76 marathons around the uk, Matt joined me in Bristol for one of the runs. I was captivated by his story and how he manages to balance his time despite having so many responsibilities. He had committed himself to one of the most demanding sports while simultaneously pursuing a medical degree at university. The big question for many is whether it's possible to achieve both goals at the same time. He is determined that it is. Matt has since earned his professional license and now represents South Africa at a professional level, while also getting closer to his other dream of becoming a qualified doctor. This episode is special because we witness a young adult showcasing and fulfilling his biggest dreams. Now, we get to join him on his journey, be a part of it, and one day celebrate his successes.

Doch was treibt Putin an? Was meint er damit?
A is for Architecture's Episode 8, Series 3, is a conversation with a trio of great scholars, Tahl Kaminer, Leonard Ma and Helen Runting, about their recent book, Urbanizing Suburbia: Hyper-Gentrification, the Financialization of Housing and the Remaking of the Outer European City, published by Jovis in July this year. Addressing the ongoing exodus from the inner city apparent across the world and the appropriation of the suburbs by new communities, the book examines ‘the relationship between three current processes underway in global cities: the hyper-gentrification of inner cities, the financialization of housing, and the structural changes occurring in the suburbs […] using the examples of four key global European cities: Amsterdam, Berlin, London, and Stockholm.' You can find the book on the Jovis website here. Tahl's Welsh School of Architecture profile is here, Helen's Malmö University profile can be found here, and she's on Insta and X too. Her practice, Secretary Office for Architecture, is worth a look. Leonard can be found at the Estonian Academy of Arts here, and on Drawing Matter here. In Deutschland diskutieren Politiker darüber, russische Kriegsdienstverweigerer aufzunehmen.
This Episode is sponsored by Unpacked's new podcast, ‘Homeland: Ten Stories, One Israel‘ https://jewishunpacked.com/podcast-series/homeland-ten-stories-one-israel/ *** What would you do if you had 2.5 million dollars to invest in scientific research? Would you search for a cure for Altzheimer's? Cancer? MS? Would you try to send the first man to Mars? Or would you attempt to create the perfect tiktok video? These are the questions that faced Professor Ido Kaminer from the Technion. Well, maybe not the last one. Professor Kaminer applied for the prestigious Polymath award, given each year by Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google. The rules are simple: submit a research proposal in a field that you've never explored. In other words, the applicants are requested to leave their comfort zones, think outside of the box and come up with an innovative idea that's worth the money - 2.5 million dollars. Professor Kaminer was recently notified that he was awarded the prize. Now, he faces probably THE greatest challenges of his career - trying to explain to us simpletons what in the world his research is about. Prof. Ido Kaminer is a physics professor, he studies quantum mechanics and he's the first Israeli to have gotten the Adolph Lomb medal, awarded since 1940 to a person who has made a noteworthy contribution to optics at an early age. It's an honor to have him on the show today. (Photo: BAYS Israel Chem Laureate)

In Episode 5 of A is for Architecture, I speak with Dr Tahl Kaminer of the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University, about his research on ideas of political identity, agency and practice in architecture, and how architects have addressed (and sometimes still do!) their social role. We talk around and about his 2016 book, The Efficacy of Architecture: Political contestation and agency (Routledge) and his 2011 book Architecture, crisis and resuscitation: The reproduction of post-Fordism in late-twentieth-century architecture (Routledge). I met Tahl when I worked in Glasgow, at an interview, then later in Cardiff. I use his books in my teaching, and was involved briefly in one of the schemes he describes, the Atelier d'architecture autogérée in Paris, France. Tahl's academic profile can be found here: www.cardiff.ac.uk/people

"The workbook contextualizes the child in his or her network. The idea being that the more the child has a supportive network and that they can use this network, the more they will be able to face the aspects of COVID-19. So it’s not only the illness and having people in the family who are ill or might have died, but also the other impacts of COVID-19 which is to livelihood." Episode Description: We begin by describing the challenges to making mental health resources available to children in a materially impoverished community in South Africa. Ms. Davids organized a team and built upon the work done by Dr. Gilbert Kliman who had created a workbook for American children to aid in processing the difficult emotional circumstances of living under COVID. She and her South African colleagues modified this workbook to meet the cultural characteristics of the local community. We discuss the format and content of the workbook and its success in aiding the children in representing their individual voices as well as their place in the collective chorus. We close with her sharing her family history of community outreach in South Africa. Our Guest: Jennifer Davids M.Sc.

Groundbreaking Israeli microscope can change the face of tech — scientists https://www.timesofisrael.com/groundbreaking-israeli-microscope-can-change-the-face-of-tech-scientists/ Israeli scientists say they have developed a quantum electron microscope that gives the clearest picture ever produced of light moving inside materials. Kaminer explained that microscope technology hasn’t kept up with the needs of the high-tech sector, which can innovate and problem-solve best if it can see, in detail, what is happening inside the chips, components and devices it produces. His microscope can show movement of both electricity and light, he said. “Now, we can see where current is going, where light is moving, and how temperature evolves,” he said. “Other electron microscopes can do this within certain limits. Almost all electron microscopes show you still images, or very slow images at 100 frames per second, while we have a million billion frames per second. “With this I can take electronic devices, glimpse inside, and see things in time and space that others can’t. For example we’ll be able to see, when operating a device, where current is going and how quickly.” A trans-atlantic 747 flight broke records: https://www.wired.com/story/747-set-new-record-for-crossing-the-atlantic/ • 4h 56min JFK to LHR • Not too shabby for a sub-sonic aircraft that's been in service for 50y • All thanks to storm Ciara Augmented reality coming to cars: https://www.wired.com/story/in-car-ar-drivers-get-new-view-road-ahead/ • no surprise there, but there's a lot of questions about distracted driving and safety • Rudimentary tech not expected for 5-10y :( Tech startup offers AI that grades employees on productivity: https://www.technologyreview.com/2020/06/04/1002671/startup-ai-workers-productivity-score-bias-machine-learning-business-covid/?mod=djemAIPro Smart glasses and the emergence of pop-up commerce: https://arpost.co/2020/06/04/smartglasses-store-e-commerce-clicks-bricks/ https://phys.org/news/2020-06-levitated-timepiece-benchmark.html Levitated timepiece sets new benchmark Full Strawberry Moon tonight • It coincides with a penumbral lunar eclipse that will see the Moon dim slightly • The Moon won't appear pink unless it is close to the horizon as the name comes from the fact it coincides with the annual strawberry harvest not its color From
For David Kaminer, sourdough bread is a way of life. After graduating from culinary school and spending 15 years working in commercial bakeries and restaurants, he built a pizza oven into his kitchen and opened Raleigh Street Bakery in Denver, CO in 2015. He now has dozens of customers who show up each week to pick up their near-perfect sourdough baguettes, boules, and batards from his in-home bakery. After working in a factory that produced 40,000 loaves of bread per day, David appreciates the slower pace of his cottage food business, plus the opportunities it brings to connect with his local community. David talks about the ins and outs of running a lucrative home bakery, intentionally limiting business to prioritize his family, and why he only sells one type of product: sourdough bread.Get full show notes and transcript here: https://forrager.com/podcast/8

In the United States, there are more than ten million criminal arrests each year. It is well known that many of those arrested also have a number of personal and environmental issues that not only shape their daily lives but can also be influential in their arrests and affect their defense and sentencing. In this episode, Sarah Beck Buchanan, Wright Kaminer, and Dr. Roger Nooe of the Knox County Public Defender's Office discuss their program, which has social workers working in collaboration with public defense attorneys with the goal of producing better legal outcomes by addressing the psychosocial needs of their clients.
Free speech on college campuses has become a topic of impassioned debate, as the lines between hate speech and harassment, or peaceful protest and public disturbance, are rather blurry and hotly contested. Particularly since the protest movements of the 1960s, college campuses have long been a kind of testing ground for different norms and boundaries of free expression. At the same time, some institutions of higher learning have speech codes which many feel are serving to silence debate and discussion among students in the name of protecting feelings. Our guest this week, Wendy Kaminer, is among those who believe that things like speech codes and trigger warnings have gotten out of control. Kaminer is a lawyer and writer who has dedicated much of her life’s work to defending free speech. She and host Lindsay Beyerstein engage in a spirited discussion about the grayest areas concerning speech and censorship on campus and in the culture at large. Kaminer will also be one of the many fantastic speakers at the fourth Women in Secularism conference, September 23-25 in Alexandria, Virgina.

Jenny Kaminer‘s new book, Women with a Thirst for Destruction: The Bad Mother in Russian Culture (Northwestern University Press, 2014) analyzes Russian myths of motherhood over time and in particular, the evolving myths of the figure of the “bad mother.” Her study examines how political, religious, economic, social, and cultural factors affect Russians' conception of motherhood throughout history: what motherhood is, and what it should be. Kaminer focuses on three critical periods of transformation and consolidation: the abolition of serfdom in 1861, the 1917 Russian Revolution, and the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. She investigates how good and bad mothers are depicted in various works of literature and culture, from Anna Karenina to media depictions of Chechen female suicide bombers in 2002.
