Dr. Carjie Scott is known for increasing the number of Black and minority students at colleges. She currently serves as the inaugural digital enrollment director at Tennessee State University, where she streamlined processes, automated admissions decisions, and implemented the latest trends in technology to recruit top students. Since the start of her TSU tenure, she has continually exceeded recruitment expectations. Most recently, she led the team to receive its highest enrollment of first-time freshmen in TSU history. Dr. Carjie Scott published “You are Accepted: How to Get Accepted into College and Life.” It details her commitment to equalizing and maximizing educational opportunities for all students, particularly Black and first-generation students. This organization empowers students to be seated in the driver's seat on their journey into college! Therefore, she founded The Education Equalizer. She does speaking engagements, higher education workshops, and consulting services through this brand. She also founded The Education Equalizer Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit that accepts 20 rising junior and senior mentees annually for assistance with college preparedness. Over the last few weeks we've been talking to formerly incarcerated students in an effort to better understand their experience--the obstacles they face, and the keys to their success. Today we're going to focus on the institutional perspective. What are the constraints faced by institutions when it comes to supporting formerly incarcerated students? How do we address the needs of these students without amplifying the stigma many of them face because of their experiences? How can we systematically and efficiently connect them with the relevant services and support they need and help them integrate into a community of dedicated learners? These are some of the questions that college administrators and faculty wrestle with almost daily. Our panel discussion with key stakeholders at Santa Fe College touched on all of these points plus a few more.Funding for this program was provided through a grant from Florida Humanities with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities. We all pursue  education is a path to a job or career that can put food on our tables and a roof over our heads. Others see education as a way to make a positive difference in the world which adds to our collective security. Post-carceral life is fraught with insecurity. Without any education, rates of recidivism hover around 70-85%. Education and a meaningful career can reduce those odds significantly. Beth Dodd is a graduate of Santa Fe College and is currently pursuing her bachelor's degree online. She currently works for a local engineering firm, and while her ambitions for a steady paycheck with benefits may seem modest to some, but as you listen to her story, I think you'll agree that there's nothing modest about what she's been able to accomplish with her education and the support of some key allies. Funding for this program was provided through a grant from Florida Humanities with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities. In order to understand how an incident such as the Rosewood Massacre could occur, it is important to understand the history of Africans and African Americans in Florida. In this episode historian, Dr. Susan Parker, tackles the accuracy of how this history has been told by pointing out that, contrary to the popular belief that the year 1619 is the beginning of slavery in the what we know today as the U.S., as early as May 1616, blacks from the West Indies were working in Bermuda on the production of tobacco. Evidence suggests that scores of stolen Africans from the Spanish were aboard a fleet commanded by of Sir Francis Drake when he arrived at Roanoke Island in 1586. In 1526, enslaved Africans were part of a Spanish expedition to establish an outpost on the North American coast in present-day South Carolina. Dr. Susan Parker explains that this outpost was a short-lived Spanish settlement known as San Miguel de Gualdape lead by Lucas Vazquez de Ayllon located probably on Sapelo Island, Ga., (near Darien). Dr. Parker takes a deep dive into the colonial history of Florida that was once under the ruled of Spain, France and Great Britain before becoming a territory of the U.S. in 1821. The treatment of Africans slaves and African American slaves varied by each colonial ruler. Nevertheless, Live as a slave in Florida was a brutal existence. Florida was the third state to secede from the Union and joined the South in a bid to form a slave republic. After the Union won the Civil War and slavery was abolished and Reconstruction ended, legislation was enacted to chip away at the gains African Americans made while Jim Crow acted as a form of terror and control that aimed to maintain the racial, social, political and economic norms established under slavery. In this episode, listeners will also hear from a descendant of Rosewood Survivors, Angela Goins as well as Sherry Sherrod DuPree. Mrs. DuPree has worked with the Rosewood Heritage Foundation for many years. Fellow Health at Every Size dietitian Tracy Brown shares how tuning in to her body's wisdom and practicing intuitive eating helped her recover from years of dieting and disordered eating, how she started down the path to becoming a dietitian, why she dove into practicing from a Health at Every Size paradigm early in her career, and lots more. She also leads us in a special meditation for helping reconnect to your body! Tracy Brown is a somatic nutrition therapist, registered dietitian, and attuned eating coach in private practice providing in-person, phone and online counseling since 2006. Tracy works with people on a soul level because she believes not wanting to be in the body is a way of protecting oneself, so her work is about nourishing the nervous system to feel safe enough to feel emotion and actually heal. She specializes in the treatment of eating disorders and eating problems for both adults and children, as well as issues related to overextending the body, including adrenal fatigue, hormone issues, PCOS and gut health. Tracy routinely teaches intuitive eating workshops and disordered-eating-related talks throughout Florida, including at the University of Florida and Santa Fe College in Gainesville, FL; Flager College; and Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft Myers. She is also the guest Nutrition Therapist for Feast, an online intuitive eating program run by past Food Psych guest Rachel Cole. Tracy has appeared on many podcasts discussing topics including intuitive eating, trauma healing, positive body image, and recovery. She believes that healing food and weight concerns is really about deciding to embrace our humanity in the diverse and amazing bodies we have. Living and feeling fully with courage and being dedicated to the fullest expression of who we are is the point. Learn more about Tracy and her work at TracyBrownRD.com. In this episode of the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast, you’re going to hear Tracy Brown from Naples, Florida. She is a nutrition therapist, registered licensed dietitian and somatic attuned eating coach who has offered counseling in private practice since 2006. She specializes in treatment of eating disorders and eating problems for both adults and children and she also routinely teaches intuitive eating workshops and disordered eating related talks in the North Central Florida area, including Santa Fe College and Flager College, St. Augustine, Florida. Today, and only on the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast, she’s will tell us all of this: – How being highly sensitive as a kid led her to numb her feelings with an obsession to be the perfect kid – How her obsession quickly turned into meal-skipping, dieting, and taking advice from fitness-magazines at face value – Why it took years of purging, binging, restricting and suffering before she realized that happiness wasn’t to be found by chasing after the skinny ideal – When it was that she decided to learn to accept her body and look into attuned (intuitive) eating – What it took for her to heal her relationship to food, body and exercise – Why therapy and body image work helped her not to worry about food and her body anymore – How she provides practical guidance and interventions for people suffering from eating disorders, food fears and underlying emotions – How society has a false image of how eating disorders look like and how the reality of eating disorders look like – How we can learn to eat based on permission – Why, when she works nutritionally with her clients, she only does so to make sure that they eat enough and have all they need – Why the concept of "good" and "bad" foods is obsolete to maintain a body’s natural weight – Why she believes that dieting, binging, purging and all eating disorders are symbolic communicators delivering a message from our soul – What she does when she does "symbolic decoding" – Why, when we are tempted to say "I feel fat", it never – ever – is about the size of our body, and what we can ask ourselves instead – What her three most favorite words are – Why she thinks that everyone who is willing to heal the relationship to their body/food and weight is a badass... ...
