In today's episode we're hearing from Sophie who was one of the very first guests on the podcast and she is back to share her homebirth experience. After finding out she was pregnant by surprise at her friend's wedding, Sophie admits she found this pregnancy tougher than her last due to sickness, tiredness and lots of travel for her partner's work. She hired the same lovely doula who supported her first birth and on the whole felt very confident in her ability to birth her baby considering things had gone smoothly with her previous birth. Her labour began at 39 weeks and she birthed her baby in the water at home supported by her midwife, partner, doula and mum with her toddler sleeping soundly upstairs. She shares what a calm and positive experience the birth was, the tools she used to keep herself focussed and relaxed when things felt tough, and how she went about introducing her toddler to her new little sister. This was actually the final episode I edited before birthing my second son at home and it was perfect for getting me in a positive birth mindset so its well worth a listen for anyone who is giving birth soon! In today's episode, we sit down with Libby, a first-time mum who chose a homebirth for her baby's arrival. Libby shares her unique journey of surrounding herself with a supportive birth team, including her mother, a clinical midwife, and how this choice played a crucial role in her birthing experience. We dive into the discussions about her mother's concerns and the careful planning that went into the birth. As Libby neared the 42-week mark, her midwifery team informed her that a homebirth might no longer be possible, and she would need to consider birthing within the medical system. However, fate had a different plan—on the day of her scheduled induction, her waters broke. She decided to wait for labour to start and birthed her baby in the comfort of her home. In today's episode I'm speaking to Grace about the birth of her son Jude. Grace knew she was going to need IVF to conceive having had both fallopian tubes removed at the age of 22. As a nutritional therapist specialising in fertility she knew exactly what to do to help her and her husband prepare themselves so she talks us through the conception preparation they both undertook before their successful first round of IVF. Midway through her pregnancy Grace found out she had grade 4 placenta praevia and had no choice but to birth her baby via c-section. Her surgery was booked for 38 weeks but had to be brought forward after a scary antepartum haemorrhage. This was far from the birth she had hoped for and Grace shares how she found both the experience and her recovery really tough; from the pain following the surgery to a challenging start with breastfeeding. In today's episode we're hearing from Anna about her two vastly different births. She admits she did zero preparation during her first pregnancy, seeing birth as something that simply had to be endured. As a result, when she went in for her induction she had no coping techniques to rely on and ended up having an epidural and forceps delivery. It wasn't until she took a hypnobirthing course whilst pregnant with her daughter that she realised perhaps things could have gone differently… During her second pregnancy, Anna threw herself into preparing holistically, exercising, informing herself on her options and managed to totally change her outlook on birth. Her second labour was short, uncomplicated and in her own words; euphoric and transformative. It was so good she went on to train as a hypnobirthing teacher so she could help hundreds of others have positive and empowering experiences like hers. In today's episode I'm sharing my own story of birthing my son Max. I touch on the experience of losing my first pregnancy at 12 weeks, how that loss affected my second pregnancy and the amazing support I received from my doula, acupuncturist and therapist. I talk about how finding out I was GBS positive influenced my choice of birth place and how much I enjoyed learning about pregnancy and birth through hypnobirthing, podcasts and lots of reading. I laboured in the MLU with the support of my husband and doula and whilst the birth was long and intense I came away feeling really happy about my experience. I talk at length about the preparation I did and coping techniques I used that I believe attributed to my positive birth. The placenta, a remarkable organ facilitating the vital exchange of nutrients and waste between mother and fetus, exhibits incredible diversity in its structure and composition. Beyond the conventional placental configurations, such as the discoid shape, several intriguing variations have been discovered. In this blog post, we embark on an enlightening journey to explore and understand four distinctive placental anomalies: circumvallate placenta, balltledore placenta, vasa previa, and accessory lobe placenta. Join us as we delve into these fascinating adaptations and uncover their implications for pregnancy and maternal-fetal health. Circumvallate Placenta: Unraveling the Ring of Mystique The circumvallate placenta, a captivating anomaly characterized by a raised ring around its periphery, captures our attention first. We delve into the etiology, prevalence, and potential complications associated with this unique placental variant. Additionally, we shed light on the diagnostic methods employed to identify circumvallate placenta and the impact it may have on fetal growth and maternal well-being. Balltledore Placenta: Peeling Back the Layers of Complexity Intriguing and enigmatic, the balltledore placenta exhibits an unusual lobed appearance, distinct from the typical discoid shape. We embark on an exploration of the developmental mechanisms underlying this fascinating variation. Moreover, we examine the potential ramifications of a balltledore placenta on maternal health, fetal growth, and the overall progress of pregnancy. Vasa Previa: Navigating the Precarious Pathways Vasa previa, a rare and potentially life-threatening condition, captures our attention next. We delve into the anatomy and pathophysiology of vasa previa, highlighting the presence of fetal blood vessels crossing the cervical os or lying in close proximity to it. Through an in-depth analysis, we emphasize the critical importance of early detection, prenatal monitoring, and timely intervention to mitigate the potential risks associated with vasa previa and safeguard the well-being of both mother and baby. Accessory Lobe Placenta: The Unseen Intruder Our exploration of placental anomalies concludes with a closer look at the accessory lobe placenta. Often concealed and unnoticed, this variant manifests as an additional lobe attached to the main placental mass. We unravel the diagnostic challenges associated with identifying accessory lobe placenta and shed light on its implications for maternal health and fetal development. Furthermore, we explore the potential obstetric complications and management strategies that healthcare providers employ to ensure optimal outcomes in pregnancies affected by this hidden intruder. Placental lakes, intriguing pools of blood within the placenta, form an enigmatic feature worthy of exploration. These fluid-filled spaces, ranging in size and distribution, arise from the branching and coalescence of maternal blood vessels within the placental tissue. Placental lakes often appear as dark, irregularly shaped areas on ultrasound scans, and their presence can indicate underlying placental abnormalities or complications. While small placental lakes are usually considered normal and benign, larger or extensive placental lakes may raise concerns regarding impaired placental function and potential risks to fetal health. In-depth monitoring and evaluation are crucial when placental lakes are detected, as they can serve as indicators of underlying conditions that require appropriate management to ensure a successful pregnancy outcome. Placental anomalies, such as circumvallate placenta, balltledore placenta, vasa previa, and accessory lobe placenta, serve as captivating reminders of the incredible intricacy and adaptability of the human body. As we uncover the mysteries surrounding these unique variations, it becomes evident that each holds profound implications for pregnancy, childbirth, and maternal-fetal health. By increasing awareness and understanding, we empower healthcare professionals and expectant parents to navigate these distinctive scenarios with confidence, ensuring the best possible outcomes for all involved. 031 - Encapsulating your placenta: What you need to know with a doula and birth educatorHey Shayla Podcast | Ep: 031Guest: Doula Chanel @awerkingmamaThank you for listening to the Hey Shayla podcast! Here, we love to learn new things and decide what works for us and our family.. We're the moms that support instead of judge and know there are many ways to do something right. I'd love to connect on Instagram @heyshaylaMany of us never even consider consuming our placenta because… ew, myself included! But after experiencing a wild ride postpartum I had a few people recommend it to me and honestly thought well if it will help me I'm willing to give it a try.Because there is not a ton of research on it, you really have to make the decision for yourself. But from most of the women I've spoken to who have done it, they say it's been incredibly helpful.Chanel, (@awerkingmama), is a doula and birth educator and she chatted with me about the potential benefits of consuming your placenta including helping to balance hormones, potential increase in milk supply, and helping with postpartum bleeding! I learned about the different ways to encapsulate and the logistics of what to do with the placenta once it's out!Xo ShayResources mentioned in the podcast: Connect with Chanel: https://awerkingmama.com/Placenta documentary: Placenta Encapsulation in California: https://mommymadeencapsulation.com/Join the email list to be notified when episodes go live HERE!Affiliates in this Episode:*Kindred Bravely: Maternity Sports Bra use code HEYSHAYLA for 20% offLet's Connect!Instagram (@heyshayla)YouTube (Hey Shayla)Website (www.heyshayla.com)Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/shop/heyshayla)**Disclaimer: Please note that some of the links here are affiliate links. Placenta encapsulation was a foreign concept just a few years ago, but now as it becomes more mainstream there are tons of questions around who should have it done, what the benefits actually are, if there are risks involved and when to avoid encapsulation, how Covid-19 has affected placentas, and how to find someone who really knows what they're doing. Today I get to answer all of those questions with doula and almost midwife

Michelle talks with Amy Gendron about the incredible advantages Oriental medicine can provide throughout a woman's lifetime. Oriental medicine's very tenet it seeks to maintain health and treat the whole person versus focusing on just a set of symptoms. Michelle and Amy discuss the ways that Oriental medicine is a powerful adjunct to a woman and her partner when they are ready to conceive a child, throughout each trimester of pregnancy, during labor, postpartum, and beyond. Amy explains how acupuncture can help bring a woman into balance by addressing blood quality, stress levels, and stimulating the immune system. Stress is a major contributor to pregnancy complications. Oriental medicine helps mitigate pregnancy symptoms and ease the transition into motherhood. It supports the recovery and replenishment of a woman in all aspects from the many depleting factors of pregnancy and birth. {This episode originally aired as episode 10.}"Most women have a strange relationship with their menstrual cycle, and that is the foundation, the backbone... If you can tell me what your menstrual cycle is like, I know everything about you because it is a very transparent window that can give us a lot of information about a woman's mind and body." — Amy Gendron About Amy Gendron: Amy began her journey in holistic health as a personal trainer, mentored by a black belt martial artist.
