Welcome to Episode 7 of the Nurtured by Nature podcast. Today I'm delighted to be joined in conversation by the lovely Helen Peterson. Helen is the owner of Happy Seal Yoga, based on the beautiful North Yorkshire coast. During this inspiring episode we explored how Helen's journey to improve her surfing, lead her to yoga, and rippled out to create a community that now works together to care for and enjoy the beautiful North Yorkshire coastline she calls home. We discussed how yoga can provide both a physical and perhaps more importantly mentally supportive route to recovery after serious injury and that even if you can't touch your toes, you shouldn't be put off trying yoga. Lastly we pondered how our own perspectives in life can lead to us becoming blinkered and taking for granted the beauty that's just around the corner on our own doorsteps. Learn more about Helen:Based on the beautiful North Yorkshire coast, Helen founded Happy Seal Yoga in 2019 and specialises in outdoor yoga by the sea classes for all abilities. Classes take place in Sandsend, Whitby, Scarborough, Cayton Bay & Filey. Connecting with nature and absorbing the sounds of the sea as you flow gives that all important quiet time that is often hard to find in busy day to day life. Helen loves the outdoors and is particularly fond of the sea. A firm believer in the proven positive mental health benefits of activity in, on and near the ocean, when she's not teaching yoga you'll usually find her in, on or very close to the sea!Website: www.happysealyoga.comInstagram -@happysealyoga https://www.instagram.com/HappySealYoga/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/HappySealYogaOther useful links from this episode:Find out about Planet Patrol through their website. Episode 182 is chock full of tidbits! Kari gives a mini-review of the new Weird Al movie, and listener Blair shares his thoughts on the Mötley Crüe/Def Leppard/Joan Jett tour. Billboard Flashback: Since this is episode 182, Joe and Kari travel back to November 1982 to flip through an old issue of Billboard Magazine. They find ads and articles for acts like George Clinton, Planet Patrol, and Joni Mitchell. The charts in 1982 were a trip; did you know the Dynasty theme song hit the Top 20 of the AC chart? Weird. Also included: a review of Juice Newton's live show, and new to the chart artists like Larry Jenkins and Crash Street Kids.
Adya discovered the joy of being out on the water later in life, when she moved to Stockholm, Sweden and discovered kayaking in 2014. Kayaking in the lakes and the Baltic Sea was, at the time, the best way to escape the stress of daily life and connect with nature. Working in scientific research left little free time to enjoy her new hobby, so a few years later she ended up pursuing a new career that would allow more time for kayaking. Adya fell in love with sea kayaking as soon as she tried it in Dorset and has been on several expeditions in Greece and Sardinia. Adya trained to become a sheltered water kayak/canoe coach in London to share her love of kayaking and canoeing with others and enjoys coaching small groups of paddlers at her local canoe club. She also blogs about her adventures, hoping to inspire other women with full time jobs to try paddlesports while incorporating safety advice for everyone. After moving to Liverpool, and a less than ideal sea kayaking trip in Wales, Adya considered giving up sea kayaking for good but missed being on the water. Her love of watersports encouraged her to try paddleboarding in the Liverpool docks. With the help of a supportive coach, Adya managed to stand up on a board (and more!) giving her the confidence boost she needed at the time. Adya managed to get back into a sea kayak and now also does a lot of coastal paddleboarding. She is currently a British Canoeing #ShePaddles club champion, the paddle boarding discipline lead at her canoe club and an On Planet Patrol Community Guardian. These volunteer opportunities allow Adya to focus on some of the biggest problems we face as a society: lack of representation and climate change. With her paddling, blogging and #ShePaddles work, Adya hopes to raise awareness of the lack of diversity in paddlesports and help improve gender, ethnic and neuro-diversity in the paddlesports community. I am so thrilled to welcome Gill Ryan to the podcast!Gill lives in a town in Hampshire on the South Coast surrounded by water but this doesn't mean she grew up as a water baby, in fact the opposite. She tried SUP in the summer of 2019 and instantly fell in love and SUP soon became a big part of her life. There was just one challenge and that was getting over her fear of the water!Being married and a mum of 2, Gill loves nothing more than getting her family out on the water with her, she even got her over 70 year old dad out in a kayak for the first time in decades. Gill tells us all about preparation and patience she uses to take her children on the boards! In 2020 Gill became an Ambassador for three fantastic companies; Bluefin, Stand Clothing and Yak Paddling Adventure Equipment and in recent months has also taken on the role as a Community Guardian for Planet Patrol with her friend Kerry, whom she met via SUP. Being a naturally shy person around people she didn't know, SUP has boosted Gill's confidence dramatically. Never would she have imagined meeting up with a group of people she didn't know and thoroughly enjoying herself. She has made some fantastic friendships. Her new-found confidence has now led her to recording reviews on products. She shares that she still gets tongue tied and it takes several attempts along with a lot of editing but these reviews have proven very popular, especially her YAK Kallista Buoyancy Aid review. She also loves helping small businesses, promoting their clothing/accessory ranges and often gets sent items to promote on her ever growing Instagram @sup_loving_gill account. In summer 2020 Gill organised three local meet ups, where around 20-30 people turned up each night. Going forward her plan is to organise more meet ups, including fancy dress nights and litter picks, organised through the local sup groups on Facebook.Owning a VW campervan gives her the freedom to travel further afield and stay overnight. Gill is currently organising various trips around the UK including Devon, Lake District, Swanage and East Sussex. Gill featured in the 2021 Spring edition of the SUP International Magazine, where she talks about the joy of being able to get back out on the water after restrictions lifted, what motivates her and her kit .Along with SUP, Gill's other passion is photography, no fancy cameras just her mobile. For her combining the two has been a dream. She loves nothing more than catching a beautiful sunrise or sunset from her board, spotting glorious water reflections and snapping those stunning autumnal shots on the Basingstoke Canal. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I do! I'd love to hear your thoughts and do follow Gill.If you have any questions, please get in touch on thejoyofsuppodcast@gmail.com.Instagram is @thejoyofsuppodcast_Follow #thejoyofsuppodcast on Twitter and InstagramFacebook The Joy of SUP PodcastWebsite www.jomoseley.comIt would be fantastic if you could also rate and review us on Apple as it will help more people find our paddleboarding SUP sunshine! Martyn has known Arthur Baker for many years, sometimes competing for similar productions but always remaining good friends. He is an American record producer and DJ best known for his work with hip hop artists like Afrika Bambaataa and Planet Patrol, and his work with New Order. His love of dance music and his creativity merged to form the ‘Arthur Baker' sound – the origins of which heavily featured Roland drum machines and rhythms influenced by early electronic music pioneers like Kraftwerk. He is a very important figure in the development of hip-hop and mainstream dance music, and he's a fascinating character. Ladies and gentlemen – I give you Arthur Baker…

I'm thrilled to welcome Dr Adya Misra to The Joy of SUP Podcast. I discovered Adya on Twitter and love her passion for coaching other women in SUP + kayaking as well as her commitment to the environment. I also admire how she made a decision to change her research career so that she could incorporate SUP + coaching into her life. There are so many valuable lessons within Adya's story I am honoured to share it.Adya discovered the joy of being out on the water when she moved to Stockholm, Sweden and discovered kayaking in 2014. Being inside a research lab 24x7 left little free time to enjoy her new hobby, so a few years later she decided to change careers and get her weekends back. After kayaking for several years, and craving a challenge while living in a new city, Adya tried paddleboarding in 2019 in Ireland and a few months later bought her own board. She is a flat water kayak coach and loves leading small groups of paddlers at her local canoe club near Liverpool. In the soundbite clip she also shares her joy of paddling in the Liverpool Albert Docks. Adya also blogs about her adventures at Gone Paddling, hoping to inspire other women with full time jobs to try paddlesports while incorporating safety advice for everyone. She is also a British Canoeing #shepaddles Club Champion hoping to improve representation of women at her local canoe club not just as members but in more leadership roles. We cover some really interesting topics around women in paddlesports from both a coaching and participation perspective. I found this really fascinating, in particular around technique and using our bodies in a more effective way. With her paddling, blogging and #shepaddles work, Adya hopes to improve gender, ethnic and neuro-diversity in the paddlesports community.Right at the end of the podcast, Adya also shares her brilliant news with us having recently become a On Planet Patrol Community Guardian. I'm so thrilled to share India Pearson's episode with you. I discovered her on Instagram and was struck by the light and kindness that shines through. I think you will love her too!India is a yoga + SUP Yoga teacher, presenter and founder of Fin and Flow based on the Kent Coast in Hythe. As a former dancer, India found yoga after struggling with anxiety and the unforgiving pressures that can be felt in the performance industries. After what felt like a 'mid 20's crisis' India changed her mindset and started focusing on what fuelled her soul, instead of what felt expected. She left London, moved to the Kent coast, trained as a yoga teacher and developed a passion for watersports including SUP!The more time India spent by and on the water, the more she noticed a positive impact in her own mental and physical health. Not only this, she also wanted to give back and protect the coastline, running regular beach cleans and fund-raising initiatives for environmental charities. India currently runs yoga/beach cleans for Planet Patrol and in June 2020 embarked on a solo SUP trip, to paddle board the length of the Royal Military Canal between East Sussex and Kent in 1 day whilst litter picking and raise money for a '2 Minute Beach Clean Board' on Hythe Beach. With the help of a friend and trusty mobile phone India has put together a film of her adventure, to highlight the damage litter and most importantly plastic pollution is having on our waterways.India has combined her passions together and founded Fin & Flow, a hub for like minded people to connect through wellbeing by the sea, from yoga to paddle boarding wild swimming, walking and beach cleans.India is also a proud ambassador for Hatha Paddle Boards and #ShePaddles, an initiative run by British Canoeing that inspires women to engage in paddle sports. In this episode, India shares lots of wonderful and helpful information about SUP Yoga - from what to wear to what to expect and how it can really benefit us, meditation and mindfulness. She also tells us about her fundraising challenge for 2MinuteBeachClean and the On Planet Patrol app. There is also a brilliant story about the amazing things that can be done upcycling an old pair of waders! India gives us some insight into the British Canoeing She Paddles campaign and her dream location to paddle in the UK and her most memorable SUP moment. It was an absolute joy to talk to India and learn more about SUP Yoga. Here's to rising by lifting others, dancing on the waves and a nice cup of tea and piece of cake! You can find India here:Instagram - @with_india / @finandflowWebsite - www.finandflow.co.ukEmail - finandflowuk@gmail.comOther links she talks about are above or on Instagram - @onplanetpatrol / @2minutebeachclean / @lornadoyledesign / @british.canoeing / @hathapaddleboardsThank you for listening! This week, in a special episode of Earth Shakers, we turn the tables on our host Lizzie… You may know Lizzie Carr from her social media where she highlights plastic pollution, galvanises communities to come together to clean up our waterways and beaches, or from news coverage where she speaks truth to power with an aim to hold corporations and Governments accountable for their practices and policies. Lizzie’s producer Stevie steps in for hosting duties to put Lizzie in the hot seat to find out more about her work as a full-time activist and climate campaigner. Lizzie describes a typical day looks like behind the scenes of what people may see on social media, she describes eco-anxiety and how it manifests for her and her coping mechanism, and for the first time she talks about being pregnant and her thoughts on eco-parenting. Lizzie also discusses climate change in the context of a pandemic, how Governments have shifted focus, but have we seen how quickly they can act when they need to and should a similar urgency be given to their policies around climate change. Let the Record Show, the crate-dug interview series in which artists discuss their favorite songs of all time as the tracks spin on vinyl, continues its third season today, as hosts Mike Pizzo and Warren Peace sit down with Lil Jon. Shot just a week after his Super Bowl Pepsi commercial with Steve Carrell and Cardi B aired, Lil Jon defies expectation yet again with his song selections on Let the Record Show. Taking us back through his early years, Lil Jon reveals the songs that shaped his tastes, with classic picks such as Cybotron’s “Clear”, Afro-Rican “Give It All U Got”, Lil’ Louis “French Kiss”, and Planet Patrol’s “Play At Your Own Risk”, to name a few. Jon also teases that he and Usher have collaborated on a follow-up to “Yeah!”, which samples one of his picks for the show, Loose Joints’ “Is It All Over My Face”. He also recalls studio tales of making some of his earliest hits, including Capleton’s “Tour” and “Wings of the Morning” with Method Man, as well as Ghost Town DJ’s “My Boo”. Originally released March 2019.

The Miami Bass movement was extremely prominent in the 80s and 90s, thanks to legendary artists like 2 Live Crew, MC Shy D, Planet Patrol, Gucci Crew, Anquette, Poison Clan and Clay D. The DJ's also played a significant role in the movement as well, like Mr. Mixx, DJ Magic Mike, DJ Laz, Uncle Al, Jam Pony Express, Felix Sama, Power Supply and Jealous J (Jim Jonsin). While most people think Uncle Luke when talking about Miami Bass, the scene was so thick as Andre would say. Before you had Pitbull, Flo Rida, Kodak Black, Rick Ross, Ace Hood, DJ Khaled, Stitches, Lil Pump or XXXTENTACION, you had this great music featured on our 1 hour and 23 minute mix. We know our core audience is prominently east coast (bias) and we all know where hip-hop started. If you're a fan of Take It Personal, you'll know we cover everything and take pride in showcasing music from all over. But it's important to listen, understand and appreciate what other regions like the South have to offer. We don't expect you to love everything we play, but everything played on this tribute was played for a reason. This is an extensive timeline of Miami Bass themed music and while the Miami sound evolved and featured less bass as the years went on, all these tracks capture an important time in music, especially in the MIA. This is our Miami Bass Tribute. We hope you all enjoy it!

Planet Patrol is an American electro group originating in the 1980s. The members were Arthur Baker, John Robie, and a quintet of vocalists led by Herbert J. Jackson: lead singer Joseph Lites, Rodney Butler, Michael Anthony Jones, and Melvin B. Franklin (not to be confused with Melvin Franklin of The Temptations). The group only produced a single album, the self-titled Planet Patrol in 1983, which peaked at #64 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart. The group's most popular song, "Play at Your Own Risk", was created from tracks that did not make the final version of Afrika Bambaataa's seminal "Planet Rock".
Last week on the podcast, in KEYSTONE KAPERS, our beat consisted of the back alleys and mean streets of Keystone where Harry Hooligan made his mischief. This week, in Spectravision's 1983 adventure PLANET PATROL, our beat is, well, the whole darn planet. It's like when, after the sitcom "Gilligan's Island" ended, the castaways ended up in the cartoon "Gilligan's Planet". Yeah. Exactly like that. Thanks to Kevin McLeod at Incompetech.com for creative commons use of his songs "Reformat", "Take a Chance", and "Pinball Spring". Atari Bytes show notes and so much, much more here. In this week's episode I talk about Spectravision (later Spectravideo) and two of their early games, Gangster Alley and Planet Patrol. Guy Hutchinson has sent another great audio submission, and I am once again under coffee's big delicious thumb. Next week, two of my favorite games from kidhood, Miniature Golf and Human Cannonball. Upcoming games include Coconuts and Cosmic Creeps by Telesys, Star Wars Death Star Battle and Ewok Adventure by Parker Brothers, Bowling and Sky Diver by Atari, Tennis and Laser Blast by Activision, and Circus Atari and Superman by Atari. You can send your memories of these games or anything related to the Atari 2600 to me at 2600gamebygame@comcast.net. Also, as I mentioned in the show, send me the list of games you had as a kid if you remember, and also let me know if you find any 2600 games out there in the big bad wild. Or on eBay, that's cool too. Thanks for listening! This week's episode details two of Atari's sports games that kinda sorta resemble the sport they're based on, Basketball and Football. Lots of stories and comments, Strudders' Score, and another audio submission from Guy Hutchinson! Also, please go to 1 More Podcastle and vote for the A-Team! Details are in the episode. Next week I'll be looking at Gangster Alley and Planet Patrol by Spectravision. Upcoming games include Miniature Golf and Human Cannonball by Atari, Coconuts and Cosmic Creeps by Telesys, Star Wars Death Star Battle and Ewok Adventure by Parker Brothers, Bowling and Sky Diver by Atari, and Tennis and Laser Blast by Activision. In this week's episode I profile the first two Sega games for the Atari 2600, Tac-Scan and Sub Scan. This is just as confusing as Data Age's Airlock and Warplock, but those weren't in the same show. In this episode is a new Strudder's Score and an audio submission from Mr. Guy Hutchinson, podcaster extraordinaire. Here's a protip: if you run out of time to write a script for your show, don't think you can just use your notes and improvise, it ain't gonna happen. Next week I'll be looking at Football and Basketball by Atari. Hopefully I'm just going to look at them not actually play them, but I may be expected to do that. Upcoming episodes will include Gangster Alley and Planet Patrol by Spectravision, Miniature Golf and Human Cannonball by Atari, Coconuts and Cosmic Creeps by Telesys, Star Wars Death Star Battle and Ewok Adventure by Parker Brothers, and Bowling and Sky Diver by Atari. You can send emails or mp3s containing your wonderful stories for any or all (recommended) of these games to 2600gamebygame@comcast.net. Thank you all for listening! This week's extremely late episode deals with the early Data Age games Encounter At L-5 and Warplock. I'm sorry you had to wait so long for this lackluster episode. But there is an audio submission from Kevin, so it's not all bad. Next week's also delayed episode will be about Tac-Scan and Sub Scan, by Sega. Yes, it's the same Sega. Upcoming games include Basketball and Football by Atari, Gangster Alley and Planet Patrol by Spectravision, Miniature Golf and Human Cannonball by Atari, Coconuts and Cosmic Creeps by Telesys, and Star Wars Death Star Battle and Ewok Adventure by Parker Brothers. If you have stories for any of these games, please send them to me in text or mp3 form, 2600gamebygame@comcast.net. I read every submission on the show and I really love hearing from you! This week's episode is about the early Atari games Breakout and Home Run. I received another audio submission this week, I love getting those so please keep sending them in! Next week I'll be discussing Warp Lock and Encounter At L-5 by Data Age. It may be a short show, there's not much info out there about Data Age. Upcoming games include Tac-Scan and Sub Scan by Sega, Basketball and Football by Atari, Gangster Alley and Planet Patrol by Spectravision, Miniature Golf and Human Cannonball by Atari, and Coconuts and Cosmic Creeps by Telesys. You can send your stories and memories of these games in text or audio form to 2600gamebygame@comcast.net. Thank you for listening! This week's episode deals with Activision's Skiing and Bridge. Please note that I screwed up the production number of Bridge in the show, it should be AX 006. I totally missed that in the list and just noticed it now when I checked what the numbers were for the blog title. In this episode I got two great audio submissions from Shinto and Rob O'Hara, and I got some constructive criticism from James. Instead of recording at night this time, I recorded after I woke up, so if you're reading this James, please let me know if this made any difference! I think I sound a lot more awake, I'm sure that my wife will let me know too. Next week's episode will be about Breakout and Home Run by Atari. If you have any stories or memories of these games, please send them along to 2600gamebygame@comcast.net. You can send text or audio, and all of them get on the show. Upcoming games include Encounter at L5 and Warplock by Data Age, Tac-Scan and Sub Scan by Sega, Basketball and Football by Atari, Gangster Alley and Planet Patrol by Spectravision, and Miniature Golf and Human Cannonball by Atari.
