I'm here with some disheartening news. Here it is… Podcasting doesn't work.  Now, before you throw up your hands and click to the next thing in your feed, before you swipe on by, before you get defensive… let me tell you how I've come to this conclusion. This episode was originally recorded as a live stream, and then edited as a podcast episode for Podcast Envy. I am looking for 100+ ways to successfully leverage podcasting and IF we can get to this number, I'll share what I've discovered in a curated private podcast feed for YOU! Email me andrea@thecreativeimpostor.com – subject line: Podcasting DOES work! and tell me a little bit about what your show is doing for you (and your org, business, company or brand. You can send a text response or voice recording and I'd LOVE to publicly share your show and some gratitude for your brilliant contribution on a future episode of Podcast Envy. Disappointing podcast metrics? Hazy podcast content strategy? Feeling the burnout, the overwhelm, the dread… and it's only January?! When we only think about podcasting for our business, brand, or organization in order to grow our audience, and the reason we wanna grow our audience is to sell more of a thing in order to make money, then we are often going to be disappointed. Why? Because there are easier, more cost effective, faster ways to grow our audience, to sell more of a thing to make more money. This does not mean that podcasting doesn't work, but it means that we have to be a little bit smarter than just download numbers, growing our audience to sell a thing. We have to think about what podcasting does really, really well and how to leverage the time, the money, the energy, the effort, the investment that we are putting into our podcast, to know how to leverage that in a way that it makes more sense, that it fits into our strategy and into our workflow… better. I don't want to offer you another recap roundup or year in review episode. The other thing I'm not offering you is a “new year, new you” episode. But I DID want to come on here and have a podcast conversation with you because things are changing. And I'm actually pretty excited for 2024! When you started your podcast, you had an idea in mind, probably, of what you wanted to offer to your audience, a problem that you were solving or something that you wanted to speak to. And maybe you've been chugging along and you felt great and it was working and it was making a difference and people were joining your podcast and your audience was growing and then something happened.  You became bored or disillusioned with your show, or your numbers kind of stagnated or maybe even dropped. But it's not that you suddenly are doing something wrong – it's that your community, your audience is also changing. And so what it is that they need now and how can you shift to meet that need? I have a confession to make and that is that I have a problem. There is a word that I have started using. I have adopted it into my language, into my vocabulary, and I am very disturbed and ashamed, and it's not a word that I wanna be using ever, or at least not as much as I have been as of late. And that is, well, if you looked at the title of the episode, you already know it's the “c-word.” I serve business owners, thought leaders, and organization directors in their respective niches to use the medium of podcasting towards whatever their higher purpose or goal is. But this whole media landscape is getting more competitive day by day.  You CAN use this platform to create genuine, intimate, meaningful conversations with your listeners. You are creating meaningful change in their life. You are providing them something that they don't get anywhere else. However, they need to be able to find you, and once they find you, you need to be able to capture and hold their attention long enough to build the relationship.  And that's where the "p-word" comes in! The summer slowdown... it's the PERFECT time to do a bit of business development that is actually FUN! This year, Lauren Ramsey of Betsy Bash and I decided to team up to help you with this conundrum of feeling like you are constantly on the content hamster wheel generating podcast episodes, generating social media posts, making TikToks and reels, trying to figure out what the heck to put on YouTube, trying to figure out what the algorithms want... Why is it important to sync your content across your podcast, social, and other marketing channels? Lauren says, "Your audience is seeing all of those channels. So if they don't match, if they're not aligned, people can feel that. Whether or not they realize it consciously, they are realizing it subconsciously and it negatively impacts their perception of your brand. Which is really hard to get rid of later. Right? Like how do you change someone's subconscious?" Your social media exists to pull people towards your brand. It's there to create a community around your brand. So if it's not aligned with what your podcast marketing goals are, that's a huge miss.  Not to mention... you're burning a lot of time, energy, and resources. So what's a podcast creator to do? How To Create A Safe Space For Vulnerable Podcast Interviews

Welcome to a crossover episode of a different sort. But first: How are you doing? No, really? I ask because May is Mental Health Awareness Month. So many of us, myself included, struggle to articulate how “off” we feel right now, a cruel joke given that the good folks and orgs behind this month's observance urge us to check in with our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.  I'll go first (yikes!): The only way I can describe my current state of mind is fragile. Can you relate? If you're an entrepreneur, an educator, a corporate employee, a HUMAN, I bet you can. You're okay. I acknowledge and honor your struggle. This episode isn't about mental health per se. It's about creating a secure and attentive environment for guests to feel supported, understood, and willing to engage in vulnerable conversations. The high schoolers behind Power Your Story, my student mentee podcast, beautifully illustrate my point. Their cohort-led interview with Peer Support Specialist and Mental Health Advocate Ashley Scott showcases subtle practices anyone can incorporate to become a better listener and, thus, better podcast host. Co-hosts Elvis, Emerie, Jules, and Alejandro facilitate a space where Ashley feels supported to speak more candidly about her mental health. That safety is mutual: Ashley's comfort leads the students to go off-script, to ask more meaningful follow-up questions, and to add personal observations that make for a more engaging conversation. You can talk about podcasting for marketing, sales, audience growth, or business all day, but this genuine exchange is why I love podcasting; this is where your audience will find value. The last few episodes of Podcast Envy have focused on hosting and content strategies guaranteed to make your show a repeat listen. By creating a safe, intimate container where you and your guests can discuss important topics, you're signaling to the audience that they, too, are seen and heard. I appreciate that not everyone's format is conducive to exploring tough conversations. Still, anyone can follow the Power Your Story lead, regardless of your show's POVs, by remaining present and reflecting back to each guest. For Mental Health Awareness, check out all of this month's related Power Your Story episodes:  Insomnia & Dreaming of a Better Night's Sleep with Leonardo & Dewayne;  The Journey to Self-Empowerment: Mindfulness,Law of Attraction with Hysan & May;  Heavy Metal & Mental Health with Justin Bowling by Leslie, Carlos, Essence & ChuYing and produced by Aldo; Advocating for Mental Health & Peer Support with Ashley Scott RECOMMENDED LISTENING PEP106 - Awesome Podcast Host Featuring Karen Yates Power Your Story Refresh Your Podcast (Don't fade out!) I've been learning about sales. NOT my natural zone of genius, but I'm necessarily getting better at it, partly thanks to one of our clients, Paul Reilly at The Q and A Sales Podcast. On a recent episode called “What separates top achieving salespeople?” Paul said that 79% of top achievers' sales success is because of the customer relationships they build.  His team asked buyers and decision makers: Why would you choose one partner over another? Relationship with a salesperson ranked higher, meaning more important, than price. And part of relationship building is ENTERTAINMENT. You may be thinking, “But Andrea, I'm not selling anything when I'm making a podcast!” Wrong! On the surface, you may have a podcast to help you sell a product or service, join your membership, come to your event. Dig deeper, and you may be selling them on an idea, concept, or a change you want to see in your niche. And ultimately, you are ALWAYS selling them on continuing to spend their valuable time and attention listening to your podcast. So how are YOU going to make your podcast more entertaining as you build that relationship with your listener (i.e. your customer?) I've got 10 ideas for you!  You may be thinking, “Do I have to sing? Be funny? Do investigative journalism? Sound design????” NOT NECESSARILY! Now, this may be difficult to hear, so sit down and take a deep breath... Your podcast might be a little boring. What? Gasp. "There's no way," you say defensively. I'm not saying that you're doing a bad job at podcasting. Not at all. I simply want you to consider a few ways to make your show more compelling. I'll even offer up a formula for your success!  For now, consider this: Three-quarters of podcast listeners enjoy a podcast "for particular hosts." The host is the reason they appreciate the podcast! Who better to chat with than Jessica Kupferman, CEO and co-founder of She Podcasts? She's the equivalent of a vitamin D booster in hilariously brilliant, totally authentic human form. Alongside co-founder Elsie Escobar (who's also appeared on PE), Jessica has created something unique in a space dominated by male voices (literally and figuratively): the largest podcasting community created by and especially for women, non-binary, and LGBTQIA+ folks. In addition to its own podcast, extensive social media community, and membership, She Podcasts hosts She Podcasts LIVE, an annual gathering of diverse talents and viewpoints. The best part about the She Podcasts universe? Everyone is welcome here. Seriously, with a community of over 21,000 members, there's room for pro podcasters, newbies, and wannabes. PODCAST ENVY HAS REACHED 100 EPISODES!  The all-cap is warranted. Looking back over 100 episodes, I can't help but think about the olden days of my business. When I launched Podcast Envy in 2018, I had a small roster of podcast editing clients and helped a handful of folks launch new shows. Oh, and the “team” was just me and Edwin Ruiz, CI's technical director extraordinaire.  My centennial achievement is only half the story. The other half belongs to the Creative Impostor Studios team––a team I'm mad proud to say has gone global: Monica Braine, Associate Editor & Consulting Producer (Albuquerque, NM); Helen King, Associate Editor (Auckland, New Zealand); Alex Riegler, Podcast Manager (Chicago, IL); Edwin R. Ruiz, Technical Director (Chicago, IL); Heidi Stabbert, Associate Editor (Anchorage, AK); Caitlin Sunderland, Social Media & Outreach Coordinator, (Richmond, VA); and Lisa Widder, Show Notes Copywriter (Chicago, IL). To mark 100 shows, I asked each of them to offer up some sage counsel for podcasters, plus a piece of advice for folks wanting to do what they do on the daily.  MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE PE055: Celebrating Podcast Milestones Podcast Envy DIY+ Launch Program - Book a 20min Virtual Tea Date with Andrea to see if you're ready! *** Get the full show notes including links to shows and episodes referenced at: https://www.podcastenvy.com I'd love to hear your thoughts and questions! Hey Andrea... Should my podcast be on YouTube?

Today I am answering a question that I have gotten from not one, not two, but many a podcaster in some way shape or form “How do I leverage my video for my podcast?” and it's near cousin “Should my podcast be on YouTube?”  I'm going to start with the 2nd one. Should my podcast be on YouTube?  If you know anything about me you know I don't love stats & numbers. They don't mean anything to this theater kid's anecdotal brain — BUT suffice to say the stat show a LOT of people use YouTube every day. WAY more people than listen to podcasts.  Also, YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine, after Google.  Keyword search in Google and YouTube = Awesome!!! Keyword search in most podcast apps…. wah wah wah wah… Why wouldn't you want to do everything in your power to make you podcast and by extension your brand and yourself as searchable ie. findable as humanly or algorithmically possible?  Well, time, resources, energy, effort is finite and it's hard to be able to do all the things that you could do to that end within you particular set of constraints.  So HOW you go about putting your show on YouTube is maybe the better and indeed more nuanced question. Life's too short and there are too many options out there to do business marketing tactics that feel boring or even dreadful! *** Get the full show notes including links to shows and episodes referenced at: https://www.podcastenvy.com I'd love to hear your thoughts and questions! What is it about a new year that sends me deep into my productivity feels? ‘Tis the (well-marketed) season for shiny new projects over thoughtful annual assessment. For tidal waves of bigger! better! concepts vs. gentler tides of introspection.  So, who else besides me needs a life vest to keep from drowning under a productivity deluge?  Truth: I have a complicated relationship with productivity.  Sarah Steckler feels our pain. She's a productivity strategist and educator who helps folks bring more intention and awareness to their personal, professional, and creative mindsets via courses, planners, and weekly newsletters. Sarah's also the host of the Mindful Productivity Podcast, on which she breaks down proven productivity skills and entrepreneurial organization strategies into totally doable, sustainable habits. Sarah reminds us to take the smaller steps when we're feeling overwhelmed by productivity adrenaline, especially the tasks that have seemingly little direct impact on our larger aspirations. But I guess a necessary thing if you want to create a scalable business that grows, that doesn't make your brain hurt every time you try to bring on a new team member, or remember how you did the thing or try to build some consistency or whatever, but this is not an episode, nor a rant about SOPs.  This is a rant about CONTENT. Little known fact: I learn most of what I know about business from listening to podcasts.  And so I went to the trusty Apple Podcasts app, typed in  “Standard operating procedures” looking to my very own "podcast grad school" for the answers.  I found two I was excited about: one was 44min long and made by podcasters for podcasters and the other was by a random business coach I never heard of and was 10min long.  Did either episode give me what I was looking for? *** Get the full show notes including links to shows and episodes referenced at: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/podenvy093 I'd love to hear your thoughts! It's one thing to successfully create a podcast that informs, engages, and inspires. It's another thing entirely to do so while maintaining the voice of an organization.   Enter Destination Santa Fe Opera, the show that makes it look sound so easy.  As a producer of the show, I'm responsible for creating much of that illusion. However, as a freelancer, I work approximately 1200 miles away from Santa Fe Opera's sprawling desert campus and three folks who've made this project sound so unlike others occupying the same niche. Emily Doyle Moore (director of media and public relations at Santa Fe Opera & executive producer of DSFO), Dune Alford (former media and PR associate at Santa Fe Opera & DSFO producer), and Jane Trembley (former house manager at Santa Fe Opera & current host of DSFO) lend their collective two cents (six cents?) to this conversation about institutional podcasting. So how do you determine WHO your ideal listener is, especially when you haven't launched yet? Time to break down the particulars in this session of “Office Hours” with guests Stacie Lampkin and Mike Palazza, podcasting newbies who are *this close* launching their show, Healthcare Behind the Scenes. In today's show, I follow up on some things I brought up in last week's episode, specifically, I'll talk a bit about show notes and I'm also going to talk about knowing the terms and conditions of the services you're using. I'll also talk about a small experiment I'm doing with Buzzsprout (affiliate link), the platform where I'm hosting this show.My own adventures: editing episode from a live conversation that had all been recorded on one track.I talk about the different functions of show notes. , and mention episode 75 of Podcast Envy, One other thing I wanted to follow up on: the account you need with Apple I referred to is Podcasts Connect. As my last item today, I wanted to bring to your attention the terms and conditions of your media host. Have you read them? Do you know what you're signing up to?What about the terms and conditions of the destinations, or the apps where your episodes are appearing? And just in case you're wondering how I came to think about this: it was prompted by episode 257 from Podcast Insider, released on 20 Aug 2021. The article they referred to, which I recommend you read, as it doesn't just talk about some media hosts, but also places you're likely to be using, like Amazon Music and YouTube is “Some unusual terms and conditions from podcast companies” from Oct 29,2019, updated 16 Aug 2021 and written by James Cidland. And that's the end of today's show!If you want to know, this script has taken over an hour to prepare and then about 20 minutes to turn into a blog post!In the next episode, I'll be talking about your ethical responsibilties as host – and other stuff. And then I'll probably be talking about your intro and outro.. Welcome to a conversation about podcast positivity with a somatic sex educator! Sex positive podcaster Karen Yates is in the midst of a pivot. Her show, Wild & Sublime, will still deliver its trademark sexy spin on infotainment, but as she heads back out into the real world to host her show live, onstage, she's reevaluating the things she loves about podcasting and what she doesn't. The podcast (created as a result of COVID lockdown) is an extension of those public performances. Whether focused on solo or poly play, kinky or vanilla variations, communication remains Wild & Sublime's main thrust (sorry, not sorry: Karen's world is pun-heavy).  Pleasure, as you might imagine, is another theme of Karen's show. That's where we steer this conversation - back to the pleasure of podcasting. Sure, we all craft shows with listeners in mind but, ultimately, our podcasts are for us. So, let me ask you:  What about this medium is pleasurable to you?  What podcast tasks do you enjoy doing?  What gets you in the state of flow versus what feels like a chore? After two full seasons of weekly scheduled episodes, Karen's giving those questions more thorough review. She's already outsourced the tasks that slow her down (full disclosure: she's hired The Creative Impostor Studios to take pesky production to-dos off her plate), creating time to consider her format for the upcoming season.  So, now what? As with sex positivity, podcast positivity invites play; the only rules are the ones you create. Karen has discovered what she and her audiences love most. Now she's taking the time to take good care of her podcast.  Get the full show notes including links to shows and episodes referenced at:  http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/podenvy088   CONNECT WITH KAREN YATES Wild & Sublime Podcast Instagram Karen Yates - Biofield Tuning sound therapy LISTEN TO WILD & SUBLIME S1E02 | Getting Laid During COVID: Long-Term Relationships S2E12 | COVID and Dating: FEB 2010 Update   I'd love to hear your thoughts! While recording this episode, I wrote down the following equation: Communication + boundaries = freedom to explore and play So, yeah...we're talking about sex as self-care with Karen Yates, somatic sex educator as well as creator and host of Wild & Sublime, the live show and podcast that delivers a sexy spin on infotainment.  Sex however is too narrow a term - at least by current, uniquely American standards. Erotic mindfulness is more expansive and inviting, focusing on openness and sensual pleasure rather than just the act. If you're like me - a full-grown, cis-gendered, sexually active adult - even PG-rated discussions about sex (like this one) still make your cheeks flame. Karen, who's a longtime member of Chicago's sex-positive scene, has a knack for making frank discussions welcoming no matter where her audience falls on the sexual spectrum. “We talk about kink. We talk about vanilla sex. We talk about LGBTQ issues. We talk about just how to relate to each other.” Did you catch that? Relating to each other and to self is Wild & Sublime's main thrust. Pardon the pun but when you hang around with Karen, you can't help it. And if COVID has left you blissfully or woefully partner-free? Erotic mindfulness should be at the top of your self-care practice. “It's always good to build a new relationship with your body because the body gives so much information,” Karen says. “Bottom line, no matter where you come from, it's going to be an expansive, extraordinary exploration.”  *** Full show notes, resources, opportunities, other podcasts & books mentioned... Can a conversation with a rebel influencer, recorded mid-pandemic, inspire us toward greater self-love and trust as we emerge from the COVID cocoon?  Jetty Nieuwenhuis (pronounced Yeti) is the rebel in question. It's an appropriate modifier to a term that absolutely conjures images of well-connected content creators seemingly unencumbered by life's petty worries. Also: young. Influencer is overwhelmingly associated with youth. When it comes to the typical influencer credentials, Jetty aged out of the ingenue mold before she even began. Those few additional years have gifted her with wisdom, experience, and a healthy dose of authentic middle-finger mindset.  I love Jetty because when she says living your life is the ultimate act of self-care, it's not a hollow platitude; it's her ongoing practice. A survivor of Lyme disease and bulimia, Jetty gradually grew into a place of listening to her body and mind rather than other people. So, here we are, ever so slowly move beyond our protective bubbles. We're bound to bump up against our fears out there. That's okay. Maybe we know ourselves a little better than before. Perhaps we're more adept at focusing inward as we proceed outward. As Jetty says, we can live life on our own terms. "Anti-racism work is not about saving the unfortunate; anti-racism work is about saving all of us, improving the lives of all of us." ~Lori L. Tharps One of the themes to emerge from the not your typical self-care series is connection. Specifically, the idea that pursuing practices that require greater inward focus or offer less obvious immediate gratification creates a ripple effect.  Anti-racism is self-care on a global scale. If you're thinking, “Um, Andrea, that's a bold claim and an unconventional discipline to add to my routine,” let me counter with this: it's all about mindset. Lori L. Tharps - yes, of Kinky Gazpacho fame - believes that each individual action chips away at a towering problem until our collective efforts topple the entire system. There's one critical catch. “If people look at anti-racism work, particularly white people, if they look at it as ‘well, you know, this is charity work for Black people and Brown people and I should just do it because it's the right thing and they need my help,' that's not the right mindset to go into,” cautions the blogger and host of My American Meltingpot. On her podcast, Lori approaches the practice of anti-racism with clear-eyed directness, especially in her “Don't Be Racist” series, recorded in the last half of 2020. In it, she offered some different ways of thinking about how we view the subject through a broader lens, how we incorporate these efforts into our lives, what that may look like - and allowing space for what that may not look like. Lori's creative non-fiction style transitions seamlessly from her writing to her show which makes the prospect of dismantling this whole fabricated story of race totally doable. *** Full show notes, resources, opportunities, other podcasts & books mentioned... Episode 085. "Sometimes I even think of the shows as, like, my children... like I'm co-parenting these shows and bringing them into the world... and trying to give them every opportunity possible to grow and to thrive and to reach their full potential." ~Andrea Klunder, Your Podcast Boss At The Creative Impostor Studios and on Podcast Envy, we are all about the experience of podcasting. And that goes for the podcaster, the listener, the guests, the sponsors, the collaborative partners... Whoever is involved in the ecosystem of that podcast is a stakeholder and deserves to have an incredible experience! And continuing our mini-series on self-care and podcasting, I want to clarify that part of self-care is community care! It has a lot to do with the people who are around you and the relationships that you are in. And this directly applies to you as a podcaster... whether you are brining on a team, or service providers to support your show, or you are DIY-ing it, whether you are part of a larger organization, or you are self-employed. The relationships that you have matter a lot in terms of your overall health, happiness, and wellbeing. So how do you qualify those relationships that you have and whether they are supporting you or weighing you down in your podcast ecosystem? Ready for a health check? Listen to the episode for some anecdotal ideas on how to assess and why it matters. That makes sense. It's springtime in the Midwest. It's about those green little plants that are popping up out of the earth. It's about opening the windows for the first time in ages and doing some spring cleaning, clearing the dust. And WHOA, has it been one long winter! I'm going to go ahead and categorize summer 2020 as winter, spring 2020 as winter. It was all winter, as far as I was concerned, for, you know, pandemic reasons. And I decided to do a little spring cleaning for my VOICE with a voice lesson -- coaching session actually -- but I have not had a voice lesson in more than 10 years and this opened up a bunch of  cans of worms (ew!) -- about health, recovering from trauma, fears about aging, identity, the way people perceive me, and the stories we tell ourselves. Episode 083. "Friction allows for a lot of growth if you're open to it." ~Pam Covarrubias Are you using your podcast for personal growth? Are you using it to help your listeners grow? This episode is part of our self-care for podcasters series, which is a companion to our “not your typical self-care” series over on The Creative Impostor. I recently had podcaster, conscious productivity coach, EFT practitioner, and founder of the PowerSisters Method, Pam Covarrubias on episode 125. And when I asker her how PowerSisters get matched, she brought up the idea of friction as a component to success and growth.  At first internally  I was like — EEK! No no no — when we build community we want to surround ourselves with like-minded individuals who align with our values and I started to get that old school day anxiety of being partnered up for a project with someone I didn’t like or didn’t know… But then... It really got me thinking about how friction applies to podcasting. And so Pam inspired this WHOLE episode of Podcast Envy. On one hand, I think podcasting is an EXCELLENT tool for personal growth for the show host, the listeners, and even guests. On the other hand, we have a huge “silo” problem in podcasting. Podcast hosts bring guests on the show who think like them to talk about topics they agree on from similar points of view and then share that conversation with an audience of people who also nod their heads in agreement and take notes. But where then, is the growth in that?  Still with me? Listen to the episode to get my 5 tips for inserting more functional friction into your process to help you make a better podcast. Still, if anyone can combine these classic opposites into an uncommon but cohesive practice, it's podcaster, conscious productivity coach, and recovering procrastinator Pam Covarrubias.  Heads up: This episode makes liberal use of a “b” word, an “s” word, and an “f” word. Intrigued? Fabulous! Although the language doesn't get nearly as salty as you might imagine (what, precisely, are you imaging?), the episode does provide a few choice words, courtesy of Pam, to add to your self-care arsenal. Fire away the next time you need to make space for productivity. Once you've made some breathing room, it's time to supercharge those tasks and lean into some reciprocal encouragement. Episode 082. “When I do an interview, I try to throw out any sort of expectations of the interview that I want to have, and really try to meet someone where they are in that moment, in that second.“ ~Kate Sullivan A pandemic can make you question all sorts of life and podcasting choices. Emmy Award-winning journalist Kate Sullivan offers up a solution: return to your why. Why do you care? As host of To Dine For, a multimedia celebration of ingenuity, hard work, and achievement told over food, Kate explores the universal motivator with her guests. Why do they do what they do? Why is this restaurant the location for the conversation (each guest gets to choose the place in which the interview takes place)? In crafting each episode, Kate’s reminded of her why: to tell inspiring stories over food.  Although To Dine For began as an idea for a tv series - now streaming via PBS and Amazon Prime - “the podcast started as my way of pivoting in the pandemic, of trying to create and continue to do what I love,” Kates says.  Peace, love & podcasting, Andrea Klunder, Your Podcast Boss Hear more of my conversation with Cassandre over on the crossover interview for The Creative Impostor. Episode 124. "In the midst of uncertainty, when there is this kind of situation of not knowing what to do, you realize that the majority of people aren't doing anything. So there's an opportunity there to do something.” ~Kate Sullivan Good conversation over a delicious meal with friends is the stuff of my pandemic daydreams. Emmy Award-winning journalist Kate Sullivan has found a distinctive way to tell inspiring stories over food - and package the combo for streaming.  To Dine For is her celebration of ingenuity, hard work, and achievement told over food, now available via PBS and Amazon Prime. There's also a companion podcast. Each episode showcases a conversation between Kate and her guest at a restaurant of her guest's choice. Whether recorded in a Michelin-starred dining room or a booth at IHOP, Kate's genuine curiosity makes for intimate and revelatory discussions. With a side of buttermilk pancakes. Or garlic noodles. As a viewer, To Dine For's format feels especially transportive right now. Part armchair travelogue, part ask-me-anything, the show offers respite from the uncertainty swirling around us. The interviews remind us that daring to dream is always an option. Kate says the process of crafting, pitching, and producing the show taught her the same. It took a leap of faith to leave her secure but draining job in local news and trust that inspiration would lead to personal and professional fulfillment.  Full show notes, resources, opportunities, other podcasts & books mentioned... Episode 081. “This podcast, in a way, has become my self-care. I didn’t even realize that I would be, but it absolutely has been the thing that makes me happiest... just for me. “ ~Cassandre Dunbar Here’s a podcast truth that may feel a bit uncomfortable: the personal has never been more political. Allow my paraphrasing of the popular concept to seep under your protective layers for a moment while I explain. Podcasters, content creators, cultural influencers: we all have a responsibility to speak and respond to what’s happening in the world around us. To show up for ourselves and our communities an authentic manner.  Especially now. Even if our podcasts have nothing to do with social justice or politics.  Why wouldn’t we want to create content that improves society and adds value to the lives of our listeners! Honestly? Because doing so might be risky. Doing so might require going against the forces that have shaped our POV (family, community, followers). Doing so might require confronting an old nemesis: impostor syndrome. Cassandre Dunbar of Be Well, Sis is tackling many of those personal and political taboos with her approach to the self-care podcast - a format that can politely be described as lacking in diversity. Cassandre was driven to provide information with social context, giving women of color tools to counteract the effects of sustained trauma within their communities.   She views self-care as both a personal and community-based responsibility, individual therapy as a tool for addressing our country’s racial reckoning. “We can use it to look in the mirror and see all the things that have been done - that are being done - that are harmful, not only for the marginalized communities but, really, for the greater community too.” That’s how to use your platform socially, responsibly.  Peace, love & podcasting, Andrea Klunder, Your Podcast Boss Hear more of my conversation with Cassandre over on the crossover interview for The Creative Impostor. Episode 080. “The whole reason I love the solo episodes is because they're an opportunity to speak directly to your listener.“ ~Andrea Klunder On this episode, I'm answering a question which comes to us from a conversation that I was having with Kim Wensel from Pattern of Purpose Podcast. What do you think about solo episodes? Do I really have to do them?  And of course, no, you don't have to do anything technically, but what I said to her was that I am a HUGE FAN of solo episodes for podcasters, especially podcasters who are using their show to communicate their brand, to support their coaching or consulting business, to develop their own thought leadership and messaging, and to connect with potential clients and customers in their niche. Solo episodes are the best way to speak directly to your audience and make that intimate connection. Specifically, I encouraged Kim to KEEP doing solos in addition to her interviews. I love listening to Kim's solo episodes. They're insightful. I feel like I'm getting so much value for free from them and there are things I can directly apply into my own business practices. Episode 079. “I think that it really takes a lot of courage to be able to say, you know what? It doesn’t have to look like this; I don’t have to do it this way.“ ~Kelly Covert For many, ‘tis the season to feel less than despite all you’ve accomplished. The twelfth month generally triggers an inevitable flurry of to-do list exercises, goal-setting activities, and wholesale changes to every single habit you have -- just in time for the New Year.  Inner-voice coach, author, musician, and podcaster Kelly Covert has felt your pain. “I never felt good enough, even if I finished something or I accomplished something, I just, I never felt good enough.”  Kelly has since landed on the antidote. She quit goal-setting based on external expectations for her podcast, In Her Voice, and her life. Now, she’s purposeful about her intent, defining what success feels like to her as opposed to what it looks like to others. For podcasters tied to measuring show success by standard metrics alone, Kelly’s counsel might sound radical, even downright crazy. In essence, though, she’s reconnecting your final product to your creative process. Coupled with practices like worthiness reminders and a quarterly desire process, both outlined in her new The Enoughness Planner, Kelly’s helping others rediscover their creative why and revel in their enoughness.  For more insight into developing kinder habits for yourself and your show, check out my crossover interview with Kelly for The Creative Impostor. Episode 078. “I wanted to have a platform where there could be messy conversations." ~Lisa Lackey, Insideout Conversations Question: What to do when your podcast is technically and thematically sound but… your engagement numbers could use some improvement? your show’s promotional voice doesn’t reflect your evolution as a podcaster? your strategy for reciprocal social media sharing, shout-outs, and tags is non-existent? Answer: You listen in (and take notes) while I perform pod-triage!  So, about our triage candidate. Lisa Lackey is a multi-hyphenate success. Co-founder of Insideout Living, an addiction and trauma healing center in Chicago, this licensed psychotherapist is a professional speaker, a group facilitator, an anti-racism consultant and trainer, relationship healer, and (you guessed it) a podcaster. So, about her show. Lisa created Insideout Conversations in 2018 as a safe space where messy conversations could take place. Since its inception, the podcast has enjoyed positive response and generated interest in Lisa’s services. It’s also happily outgrown the confines of her original vision. What began as a passion project has become a real professional asset. With that in mind, Lisa’s come to me not for wholesale renovation work, but for clear, actionable goals that she can accomplish—without sacrificing her other endeavors. Maximum impact with minimal messing around? Yes! It can be done!
