I know it's tempting. You fire up Zoom, hit record, and just release the combined audio into your podcast feed. That's called record and release. Lots of podcasters do it. It even works for some people. But it won't work for you. Here's why.The podcasters doing this have likely already accumulated a big audience. Back when the best way to record a podcast was Skype and eCamm Call Recorder. Back when it was a lot harder to launch a podcast, so just the act of publishing one at all showed you were putting in an effort. But two things have changed since then: The tools got better. It's a lot easier to just record and publish a podcast. The audience is getting savvier. And as a result, their expectations are higher. An early critically acclaimed movie, Grand Hotel, came out in 1932. It basically takes place in a couple of rooms in a hotel. It's still considered a culturally significant movie. But it would bomb at the box office today.Movies have come so much further than what was accomplished in 1932. Special effects, storytelling, multi-threaded plots, color…nearly everything.Moviegoers have a higher bar than they did in 1932.The same thing goes for podcasting. Publishing isn't enough. You need to do more than just talk into a mic. Plan your show. Outline or script it. And add some post-production to make it sound better. Add music.Give the listeners something besides halfway decent audio. You will see more downloads. We have addressed the topic of remote interviews on this podcast before and today we want to zero in on the option of using Skype for your conversations. There are a few simple ways that you can make recordings for an episode using Skype, and the first of these is to use the Skype software itself to record. This method is straightforward but does result in a single-track file which can be troublesome in the editing process. Integrating other apps, such as Ecamm Call Recorder, can help you get around this issue, and there are many comparable software options to cater specifically to your needs. Tune in to find out more!Key Points From This Episode:There are a number of remote recording options for podcasting. When using Skype, there is the option to record the conversation using the app itself. The app will create a simple and accessible video file for you to use. To convert the MP4 into an audio-only file format you will need to use conversion software. The file that Skype creates will be single-track, which can give you trouble during editing. You may want to utilize other plug-ins or apps that allow multi-track recording. Krystal from The Proffitt Podcast asks, "What is the best way to record someone using a phone for a podcast interview?"TL;DRIt's not uncommon to have a guest interview lined up where the only microphone that person has access to is the one on their smartphone. In that case, you just want to keep things simple so your guest can focus on what they want to say and not on the tech involved. So in this episode, we'll share some coaching tips you can give to your guest to get better sound quality as well as several software options that allow you to record phone calls.Phone Call Recording TipsTip #1: Make sure they are in a quiet space. Nothing ruins a recording faster than screaming children, barking dogs, our crazy amounts of echo. Help them find a quiet space with good acoustics (Heck! Tell them to go in their walk-in closet) to get a better recording.Tip #2: Have them use Apple Earbuds or something similar. Even if they don't own an iPhone (which comes with a free pair of headphones), chances are they know someone with a pair of Earbuds or AirPods. The directional microphone in these headphones is significantly better than the one on their phone and will help cut down on unwanted background noise.Tip #3: Make sure they have a solid internet connection or cell phone signal. No software can save you from a poor internet connection or cell signal, so make sure they have strong connection and you're hearing them clearly before you begin.Recording Software Options#1. Zoom.us (our favorite)Zoom is a really versatile platform. You can provide your guest a phone number that they can call in on or they can open up a Zoom meeting in the web browser on their phone. Plus the audio quality is significantly better than the other two options on our list.#2. SkypeThere's a good chance your guest is familiar with Skype and has used it in the past. Have them download the Skype app on their phone and join the interview that way. We recommend pairing Skype with audio recording software like Ecamm Call Recorder or Audio Hijack for best results.#3. Google VoiceIf you need something quick and easy the record a phone-to-phone interview, Google Voice is it. Just send your guest your Google Voice number (which is free to create), press 4 to start recording, then download the audio file when you're done.Record your podcasting question at Speakpipe.com/Buzzsprout to be featured on a future episode.Review Podcasting Q&A in Podchaser to let us know what you think of the show.

Boo! In honor of the Halloween season, I’m serving up advice from our spooky supernatural friends, the ghosts! Ghosting: When a person cuts off all communication with their friends or the person they're dating, with zero warning or notice before hand. You'll mostly see them avoiding friend's phone calls, social media, and avoiding them in public.* Do NOT do this to your podcast listeners! I know, sometimes podcasting is frustrating. It’s a lot more work and takes more time than anyone ever lets on in the beginning. And there’s the whole downloads thing -- Apple is not the promised land of instant subscribers and an immediate crowd of podcast fans. Your show may not be the overnight success you imagined it would be. But trust me -- your listeners are out there, and they need you. So what to do? Shannon Crow from The Connected Yoga Teacher is with me on this episode to talk podcasting and social impact. Actually, she reached out to me originally to talk about impostor syndrome (one of my fave topics), so we cover that too! I LOVE what Shannon is doing with her podcast, and even more so with her community of yoga teachers, the hub of which is her Facebook Group. In fact, you may or may not know that before podcasting, my primary work was teaching yoga and meditation. I even owned and operated my own studio in Chicago for FIVE years and ultimately had to close because I just couldn't find a way to make the business profitable and sustainable with the resources I had available. Shannon Crow is definitely a podcaster using this platform to make a positive social impact. Whether you're into yoga or not, there's a lot you can learn from her. Listen to the episode to find out how she does it! And get the FULL show notes at http://bit.ly/podenvy033 Featured Podcast Angel CURRENT PODCASTERS! We are talking all about Podcasting for TV Fans! Well… TV AND movies, specific shows AND genres… It’s all things “fan-casting!” So full confession, fancasts are not a genre of podcast I typically listen to so after talking with Troy Heinritz of The Blacklist Exposed in episode 30, I got curious about what makes a good show, particularly the community building aspects because I think ALL OF US podcasters and aspiring podcasters can learn a lot from these producers. To help me out, I enlisted the expertise of 4 show creators: Shannon Entin of Stinger TV and Movie Podcast, Ozarks Dirty Laundry and The Supreme American Horror Story Podcast Theo Burbank of Freaky Franchise Ginger Wiseman of The Outlander Podcast AND The All Souls Podcast Matt Marr of TV Tea Time, a Riverdale fancast — y’all know if you listen to my other show The Creative Impostor, I love Matt. He was featured on episode 072 of The Creative Impostor talking about vulnerability, being an artist and his other podcast The Dear Mattie Show. A halloween gift for you! This month, October 2018, over on my LinkedIn, I’m sharing podcasting tips, practices and fun all around a Halloween theme and I’m kicking it off with a Tarot Card spread for your Podcast Content Marketing Plan. This is a nod to the nostalgic defining moment of my childhood when I won (or at least placed) in a costume contest at the public library for my gypsy fortune teller look. No tarot cards are NOT fortune telling but I didn’t know any better when I was 9! So if YOU want to get the spread either to DIY with your own tarot or oracle deck OR you want me to do a 3-card reading for you and YOUR show, click on over to thecreativeimpostor.com/podcasttarot - drop your email there for me and you’ll get instructions and a super brief questionnaire in case you want me to pull cards for you. Episode 020. Are you having trouble falling asleep? I’d like to introduce you to, Harris, Host of the Sleep Whispers podcast, whispered ramblings and readings to help you sleep. You know… ASMR stuff! I’ve been featured, or, rather, guided meditations I’ve written have been whispered by Harris on his show. The latest one is here (episode 123 Fade Out!) But if you can’t go to sleep JUST yet, these podcasting tips from Harris will help give you something to think about during your waking hours: #1 - Regardless of what other podcasters tell you, you can't "give" your audience value. The value of your podcast content is determined by each listener, they will decide if it has value. The analogy is like saying you are going to tell a funny joke. Nope, each person who hears a joke decides if it is funny to them. The important message here is to ask for feedback and listen to any you get, that is the only way you will know if your content has value (or if your jokes are funny). Harris, I couldn’t agree more! For more tips from Harris, listen to the episode! --- Subscribe to Sleep Whispers on Apple/iTunes or Android/Google. FEATURED PODCAST ANGEL! You're listening to the 6th episode of the Humans 2.0 podcast, solo-series, FLOW! I frequently get asked these questions so I figured I'd make a podcast episode from it. - Why did you start the Humans 2.0 podcast?- Why do you even have a podcast bro?- What is my guest approach method? If you like talking, I highly recommend starting your own podcast. Here is a snippet from EoFire's Podcast Guide:1. Topic:What should my podcast topic be?This is the #1 question I receive.First, get your mindset right. Podcasting is a marathon, not a sprint.Your topic needs to light a FIRE inside that will keep burning for the next three to five years, minimum.Your listeners will be able to sense the passion (or lack thereof) in your voice, so make it easy on yourself and choose something you love and are passionate about. When you choose the right topic, podcasting is not work but FUN.Through podcasting you’ll have the opportunity to build relationships with those you admire while learning more about a topic that inspires you.2. AvatarThis is the biggest mistake 99% of Podcasters (including myself) make while creating their Podcast: they don’t craft their Avatar.Your Avatar is your ONE perfect listener.Your Avatar is the ONE person who will listen to your Podcast and ask him or herself, “Was this Podcast created specifically for me? Do I feel like the host is talking directly to me, addressing my pain points, and giving me valuable information on how to move past my biggest struggles?”Right now you’re reading this and saying, “But I want my Podcast to be for more than just one person; I want the world to love me and to have millions of listeners!”BIG mistake.Huge.It’s a mistake I made.If you try to create a Podcast that resonates with EVERYONE, you will resonate with NO ONE.Your goal is to serve a loyal base of listeners at an incredibly high level. This will only be possible if you know your Avatar inside out and base every decision on what your Avatar would want.Podcast length? Frequency? Interview-based? Topic-based?W.W.M.A.W.What Would My Avatar Want?Every question you have about your podcast should be answered by your Avatar; and guess what, YOU create your avatar!I was so committed to this process that I spent $3,000 on an animated video of my avatar, Jimmy. Through this process I came to know Jimmy inside and out, and every time I turned on the mic, I was speaking to and helping Jimmy.Should you create an animated video of your avatar?Maybe. But maybe not.A pen, paper, and 2,000 words will do.3. Podcast equipmentMy complete list of recommended Podcasting equipment can be found here.Buying and setting up podcast equipment is a scary thought for someone who doesn’t consider themselves a ‘techie’. I’m here to tell you it’s much simpler than you think.Below is a picture of Kate’s podcasting setup. All you need is a laptop, a mic and recording software. The ATR-2100 microphone (that’s our affiliate link; we recommend the equipment we use and love) is the best microphone for your money, and it plugs into any USB port – super easy!4. Podcast softwareHow do I record and edit my podcast?A great question. There are 3 recording and editing software options I recommend for recording and editing your podcast. My #1 recommendation is Adobe AuditionAdobe Audition works with both PC and Mac, but it’s not free.To use Adobe Audition, you’ll pay $20 a month for the Creative Cloud membership.I believe this is one of the best investments you’ll make on your Podcasting journey; becoming an expert in Audition has done wonders for my Podcast. If you’re looking to learn the basics of Audition, a simple YouTube search will do.If you’re looking to become a pro, then within Podcasters’ Paradise I have several in-depth video tutorials I created specifically for Podcasters looking to master the Adobe Audition software. My #2 recommendation is AudacityAudacity works with both PC and Mac, and it’s free! There are fewer bells and whistles than with Audition, but Audacity will definitely get the job done for you when it comes to recording and editing your podcast.Within Podcasters’ Paradise we have plenty of tutorials that will get you WELL on your way with Audacity, too!My #3 recommendation is GarageBandGarageBand is for Mac only, comes pre-installed, and it’s free!Again, you get what you pay for, so there are fewer bells and whistles, but GarageBand will also get the job done for you.Within Podcasters’ Paradise we have plenty of tutorials for you on GarageBand, too!4b. Recording InterviewsEvery single episode of the 2,000+ I have recorded for Entrepreneurs On Fire has been on a Skype-to-Skype call. Why do I insist on Skype-to-Skype?Unlike landlines or mobile phones, Skype uses technology called V.O.I.P.: Voice Over Internet Protocol. There is no need to get technical here (you can Google it if you wish to learn more); all that’s really important to know is VOIP sounds MUCH better than using a cell phone. If one of my guests says, “I don’t have Skype”, then my response is this:Please create a free Skype account and send me your user name, as Fire Nation deserves the highest audio quality I’m able to provide, and Skype will ensure that. What if they decline to do so?Simply put, they are not the right fit for Fire Nation, and I move on to the next potential guest.**Note: I’ve never encountered someone unwilling to join Skype.Recording audio interviews on SkypeThere are three ways to record Skype calls that I recommend, and those are, in no particular order:Directly into your software (Audition, Audacity, or Garageband).eCamm Call RecorderZencastr or Zoom.usIf you’re recording directly into your software for an interview show, a mixer is required. This is a lot more technical than you need to get, especially when you’re first starting out.eCamm Call Recorder works GREAT, and after you record you can split your tracks if you wish to edit on separate tracks (allows you to get a lot more precise with your editing). If you choose Zencastr, that will be your Skype + call recorder in one. It records each side of the conversation separately, so you’ll have separate tracks for editing when all is said and done.Zoom.us is also another “all-in-one” connecting and recording option for interview podcasts.5. The 8-step ProcessHere is the 8-Step process for publishing a Podcast:1. Press RecordThis is actually a lot harder than it sounds, because this is when the imposter syndrome sets in.You’ll hear a voice saying:Who am I to share my thoughts with the world?Who would want to listen to me?Who would want to come on my show?As someone who has personally mentored over 70 Podcasters one-on-one, I can say with confidence that you cannot avoid these thoughts. They are part of being human, and the best step you can take is to accept they exist and always will.I have to overcome the imposter syndrome almost every day. In the beginning, I delayed my launch for over 5 weeks because I was scared. How did finally overcome it? I pressed record and I spoke. The words will come, trust me.2. Edit This is where you can fix mistakes, add intros, outros, calls to action, etc.Adobe Audition makes this process super simple, and in the video below I’ll show you how!3. Export file as an MP3Exporting an MP3 file is just like saving a document in Microsoft Word. The export specs I recommend are: 44100 Hz 16-bit, Mono, 64kbps, CBR (constant bit rate).how to create a podcastThis will ensure your audio files stay small, and this will not only potentially save you money on your hosting account, but it will also save your listeners from having to wait on huge files to download on their computer or mobile device.4. Tag your MP3Tagging your MP3 is an important step as it adds important information to the audio file such as keywords, title and description.I recommend the tagging software ID3-Editor for this. You can see an example of how tagging will look in the ID3 Editor below:How to podcast5. Upload to your media hostYou will need a media host to store your audio files, and your media host is who will generate an RSS feed for you to submit to the major directories (like iTunes, Stitcher Radio and Spotify).Read the full guide here: https://www.eofire.com/how-to-podcast/Please do NOT hesitate to reach out to me on Instagram, Twitter or via email mark@vudream.comHumans 2.0 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Humans2PodcastTwitter - https://twitter.com/markymetryMedium - https://medium.com/@markymetryFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/mark.metry.9Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/Mark Metry - https://www.markmetry.com/

Rob Reid (@Rob_Reid), author of After On: A Novel of Silicon Valley, will be joining us for a full episode tomorrow. But on this Minisode Monday, we share one of his exercises designed to help us cut back on some of the bad habits we have when conversing and relating with others. The Cheat Sheet: Over the next few weeks or months, record ten hours of conversations with people -- acquaintances, strangers, Lyft drivers, whoever -- using something like a voice memos app or Ecamm Call Recorder on Skype. Listen to yourself with a critical ear. It will impart priceless knowledge about how you come across to other people. We all have annoying habits we're wholly unaware of. But we also have budding conversational superpowers that we could nurture if we only knew they were lurking at the surface. Ten hours is a lot. It will make you cringe. It will also help you get rid of filler words, tics, and other unintentional habits for leaner, more powerful conversations. Get out of your comfort zone and get recording! Welcome to episode 300 of Hit the Mic with The Stacey Harris. I am so, so excited to be celebrating 300 episodes with you. I'm really excited. We're going to talk about 300 episodes, some of the lessons I've learned, some of the gear I've used and why you don't need to make it super complicated. We're going to talk a little bit about what's next and my commitment to you as the community. Then I'm going to be announcing a little giveaway which I'm really excited about because I love this community and I am so, so grateful for you guys listening each and every episode, each and every week. Whether you've been listening since the beginning or if maybe you're brand new, I am so grateful that you've taken the time to listen to the show and use the show and take action on what you listen to, right? Yeah? We're doing that? Awesome. I'm amped. Thank you, thank you for listening to the show and for taking the time out of your day to celebrate with me here live on this episode 300 day. I'm so excited. I can't believe it. It feels a little nuts, a little nuts. We actually won't celebrate three years of the show until November. I think November was when we first went live with episode one, November of 2013, but we hit 300 episodes. That's the joy of doing two episodes a week. I'm just saying. Okay. Let's jump in. I want to talk about some of the lessons I've learned over the course of 300 episodes because that's a lot of content to create. It's a lot of being in the creation space and a lot of having to show up and do it. The number one thing I've learned is consistency matters more than anything else. It's not always easy. I have been really, really consistent with the show. It has gone out twice a week every single week, come hell or high water, with holidays, vacations, impromptu moves, everything, every week, twice a week for the entire 300 episodes. A lot of that came from a really strong commitment to actually doing that. There has been no acceptable excuse to me to not get the show out, but also it's been about planning in a lot of cases and just doing the work. I've talked a lot about taking December off and the planning I do for that. We've done episodes about it. By the way, if you want to catch up on any of the first 300 episodes, hitthemic.com, there's a whole list of them. There's amazing search function coming to the website soon. Yay! Those are almost easy because I see that time change coming or I need to prep for it. That stuff is easy. What's been hard is the stuff that I didn't plan for: being sick, especially ... I learned this probably my first year, maybe my second year. I went on vacation and I had pre-planned the show and pre-recorded the show and it was totally good to go except I didn't anticipate being sick when I got back. I had taken December off and we had gone to California. We lived in Arizona at the time. We'd come to California for vacation over New Years' Eve. I was going to be back in the office on Monday. The next podcast episode was supposed to go out Tuesday. Well in pre-recording all of my content I recorded all of December in November and October, but I hadn't planned on recording any January because I was like, "Oh, I'll be back in the office then. I can totally just wing it and I'll get caught back up. I don't need to go that far in advance." Well, we got back from vacation and I was really, really sick. I had no voice. I couldn't keep anything down. I was really, really intensely sick. It was a couple of years ago when that really horrible flu virus was going around. I had to suck it up and get it done and do the work and record that podcast. I sounded God-awful on the podcast because I had no voice. It took me forever to record because I kept having to pause. I felt awful. I had no energy. I had no excitement. It was awful, but I had to get it done because A, I was committed to getting it done, but B, I learned a larger lesson which was don't just plan for the days you're going to be gone but give yourself a buffer when you get back. That's been a lesson that's stuck with me for a long time which is always plan a little bit further than I think I'm going to need and to make sure that I don't run too often into the, "Oh no, content needs to go up tomorrow," which I do probably more than I'd like to, but the more I can avoid that the easier it is for me to consistently get the show out, but ultimately it comes back to that commitment and knowing this show is going out. My first year in business I was blogging. I wasn't doing the podcast. I was horrible at consistently getting out my newsletter and consistently getting out my content. That was where I had a lot of issues as far as my marketing because I had a lot of peaks and valleys because I didn't have that consistency. At the beginning of 2013, when again, I was still blogging, I said from now on this is going out X, Y, Z. The podcast came around later that year and it was again, I'm committed to this is happening. That commitment to myself, to you guys, to creating something, to my business, to my marketing, it really is the critical piece to staying with it and doing it each and every week. It doesn't have to be twice a week. If you're thinking about starting a podcast or you want to do a blog you don't have to create content twice a week. It's a little nuts. I really like it. It works for me. It worked for my show. It worked for my audience. There are absolutely people who don't listen to every episode of this show. In fact, I don't listen to every ... Well, I listen to it when I edit it so technically I do listen to every episode of the show, but there's not a lot of podcasts where I listen to every single episode. I don't have an expectation that you guys are listening to every single episode. If you are, then you're my favorite, but for me it allows me to get enough variety of content out, that it serves everybody it needs to serve, but again, consistency matters. It's not always easy. Sometimes it's really freaking hard. That was probably one of my biggest lessons, probably the biggest lesson I've had in the 300 episodes of this show. Again, if you guys have questions or comments or you just want to say hi, hit me up in the chat box right below this video. I would love to hear from you or see from you or read from you or whatever. I really like engaging with you. That really goes to my second lesson. I didn't realize how much I would love engaging with the audience of this show. I'm a little bit of an extrovert, little bit. I really, really enjoy getting to meet you guys at events and connect with people when I speak and go to events and connect on social. I didn't realize how much fun I would have talking to the audience of this show on Snapchat and Twitter and Facebook and getting your Facebook messages and getting your emails. I love when you guys respond to the emails on Tuesday. It's my favorite. It's so fun for me, even when they're just little short notes or they're questions or whatever. I have so much fun getting to connect with you guys. I really didn't realize how much I would enjoy that. Thank you, thank you for all of your snaps and tweets and all of that good stuff. I absolutely appreciate it. I read it. I respond. I love it. Thank you for being a part of this community because that's been one of my biggest lessons is how much fun that is to really cultivate that community. A lot of that involvement you guys have had with the show is why I teach so much about community, because it makes it all a lot more fun. It makes it all a lot more entertaining. It makes it a whole lot easier to do when you guys are there connecting and engaging and hanging out. It really does make all the difference in knowing that you're there and you're a part of it and you want to be there and that it's helping and that it's entertaining. It really is the best part. It's my favorite part. All right. My next big lesson, and this is one I wish I would've learned so much earlier: Re-purposing is your best friend. When you create this much content there's a lot of stuff that I have out there. There's just a lot of stuff to consume on the website. When I can re-purpose it and I can make it consumable in a new way and I can make it new again ... One of the projects we're currently working on behind the scenes is actually going through and getting transcriptions for all of the past episodes of the show. For the last maybe 10ish episodes of the show there's been a transcription that went live with the episode. It's not an opt-in transcription. It's right there on the episode. You don't have to give me your email address to get it or anything. It's just right there on the episode. The show notes all have full transcripts now, for the last 10 episodes. One of the projects we're working on now is getting that back log, getting that first 290 episodes done because A, Google, they love it. It's already had an impact on my search topics. Two, you guys seem to really like it. There are some of you who really like being able to ... You know, you hear me say something and you want to go and you take a screenshot or you copy it and paste into your Evernote for your notes or whatever. It gives you a reference point. I think that's really cool. I can also take those transcripts. This is something I started doing a while ago before we started including the transcripts for the show. I would actually get the podcast transcribed and then I would turn that into guest posts on Huffington Post and YFS Magazine and different places like that. That's really cool except now I'm also sharing it with you guys, which is really cool, but that's a great way to re-purpose your content. If you're currently podcasting or you're doing videos, get it transcribed. Share that content with your audience. In fact today, this episode, it will get transcribed and the transcription will go not only on this page after it gets transcribed, but it will also go up on the YouTube channel where this video will stay because again, that's keyword heaven for the Google search box. Find as many ways as possible that you can maximize your content. That's actually what we talked about on Friday's episode so if you want to hear more about this, go to thestaceyharris.com/episode299. We just talked about it, but it's a great way to really maximize the time you're spending. One of the things people talk about when they tell me they're nervous about podcasting is that it's going to take a ton of their time. They follow people that are doing seven day a week podcasts or five days a week or even with me, two days a week. They're like, "I don't know if I can create that much content." Here's the thing. You don't have to create that much content but you do need to maximize whatever content you're creating. If you want to do once a week or twice a month or once a month with video or podcast or blogging, plan that out. Build your law of synergy, but then just make sure you're using that content to every last degree. You're using every inch of that content to really get it in front of your audience because it makes all the difference. Cool. I'm trying to see if ... Oh, the last lesson I want to talk about is that it's okay to change your mind. This is one that I don't think podcasters talk enough about. We talk a lot about gear. We'll talk about gear a little bit in a second, but it's okay to change your mind. This show has always been twice a week because I really like twice a week, but this show has not always been on Tuesdays and Fridays. We've done Tuesdays and Thursdays. I think for a very brief time we did Sunday and Thursday or something like that. I didn't like the weekend days. For a while we had Hit the Mic TV. For about a year we did Hit the Mic TV which was a weekly web show that went along with this podcast that did go out on Sundays. I had content going out Sunday, Tuesday and Friday. It's okay if you decide it's not for you. It's okay if you launch a podcast and do it for six months and then decide it's not for you or decide you work better in seasons or you work better once a week or you want to go to seven days a week. It's okay to make changes and adjustment. There are things ... Quick anecdote: I refused to marry my husband until I had lived with him. This was just a rule, because there's something you learn about people when you live together that you do not learn just spending the night or weekends away or just dating. There are things that people learn about each other when they live together. I feel like content creation and business and all of it is the same way. There are things you learn when you're just executing. There are things you learn when you're working one-on-one with clients that help impact the marketing and the onboarding and how you work with future clients. There are just things you learn through going through it. Don't feel like you're committed to the decisions you made before you experienced any of it. Feel free to change you mind. A, most of your audience will not notice or care. Tough love. I know, the ego wants us to go like, "Oh, they'll just be devastated if I go to once a week." No. Most of them will not care, not at all, not a little, not even kind of. Some of them probably won't even notice. In fact, I am sure that if I disappeared tomorrow there is a section of listeners of the show who would never realize I was gone. There are some of you who would email me. I like you guys best, but there are some people who would just never notice. That's okay, but it's also kind of freeing because it means you can make changes. Feel free to change your mind. It's okay. It's good. Make the best decisions for you and your business and your sanity, whatever those are. Cool? All right. Those are my lessons learned: consistency, connecting and community is still my favorite, re-purposing is magical, and that it's okay to change your mind. Those are my big four lessons for 300 episodes. I get a lot of questions about my gear. I'm going to answer those once again. If you guys ever have questions about the tools I use in my business, over on the website, the page you're on right now, if you go up to the top and hover over Meet Stacey ... Oh no. Hover over where it says Podcast. Right below that is Resources, or if you just go to thestaceyharris.com/resources you will actually see a list of all of the things I use in my business. Full disclosure: Some of these are affiliate links, but I only recommend what I actually use. I have my Samsung Meteor Mic which you can actually see right here. It's on a mic stand which is called On Stage Desk Stand, right on my desk. I edit using Garage Band. My host is Libsyn. When I do interviews, which is not very often anymore, but I actually use these for my client calls as well, we use Ecamm Call Recorder because I have a Mac. We do those via Skype. You can also use things like Zoom or Google Hangouts. If you have a PC and you want to record your Skype calls there's a software called Pamela that works really well. It doesn't have to be the stuff I'm using, but I get a ton of questions about what I use. That's what I use. I'm actually shifting into what's next for Hit the Mic. I'm actually upgrading my gear. I just ordered my new mic. We're moving to a Rode mic. Rode mics have long been my favorite mic brand. I'm excited to upgrade and make this change to the new gear so you'll start hearing episodes with the new gear probably in about a month you guys should start hearing those, maybe six weeks, but yeah. I'm so excited, but that's what I'm doing to celebrate 300 episodes is we're upgrading the gear. As far as what's next, there's not any big changes planned for Hit the Mic because this community is amazing. I love the format of the show right now. Again, guests will continue to be by invite only. Fridays will continue to be three things episodes. Tuesday will continue to be whatever it is that needs to be talked about then, and you know, occasional live shows like this. Ultimately, this show is for you. This show is for the people who listen and hang out and enjoy and connect and learn from this show. If there's something you would like to hear, there is something you need help with, let me know. I'll add it to my editorial calendar. I'm currently making some final tweaks to the last quarter's editorial calendar before I go and do my massive quarter four production schedule. I'm trying to actually get most of October and November done by the end of this month. I originally had hoped to get my content done for the end of the year but the editorial calendar is still going to need some tweaks because I want to make some changes, but if you want to hear something this year now is really the time to tell me. Tell me in the chat box below right now. Tweet me. Snap me. Send me an email, whatever. This show is ultimately for you guys. If there's something ever you want to hear, let me know because I love to do that. Also, I wanted to let you know Hit the Mic Backstage has made a little bit of a change. When we celebrated the one year anniversary in August the price did go up. It's $40 per month now or $400 per year, but also this week, actually on Friday, they got a brand new website. I'm really excited to share it with the community. They got to see it on Friday when it went live. You guys are seeing it now. If you'd like to join us inside Hit the Mic Backstage I would love to have you. Love to have you. It's over at hitthemicbackstage.com. To wrap it up, because we're hitting right about 20 minutes which is actually a little bit long for one of my episodes, I wanted to let you know I'm going to be giving away over the next week, I'm going to be giving away two 30-day passes to Hit the Mic Backstage. Two lucky winners are going to get to join us inside of Hit the Mic Backstage totally free for 30 days. No commitment to join after that, just a really cool way for me to say thank you and for you to get to check out the new environment. Check that out. This week I’m sharing my pre-show checklist: 10 Steps to Recording Great Audio. This show is going to be an introduction to recording an audio track for your podcast. As I was planning today’s show, I was thinking about all the steps I take before I hit record. There’s a lot of preparation that goes into recording a show and making sure everything goes smoothly. I came up with a list of 10 things to do to get a great sounding recording. Key Takeaways: Raw audio recordings can be fairly large, so make sure you have plenty of space on your hard drive before you start a long recording. Always wear headphones when recording. Notifications will distract your listeners from your content and your message. Turn them off. Don’t scramble to set everything up last minute. Be prepared in advance. 1. Find or create a quiet recording environment. Turn off fans, AC, heaters, etc. Try to record in a room with minimal echo. You can also use couch cushion or pillows to reduce sound reflections. 2. Make sure your mic is plugged in and everything is switched on. If you are using a XLR mic and interface, make sure phantom power (or 48v) is turned on if you’re using a condenser mic, or turned off if you’re using a dynamic mic. 3. If you’re using a laptop, make sure you’re plugged in and you have enough disk space to record. This morning, I started setting up for this podcast, and I wondered how much disk space I had left on my hard drive. It had been a week or two since I checked, and I had been working on a bunch of video and podcast project. I’m glad I checked, because I only had 4gb of free space left on my 250gb hard drive. Raw audio recordings are fairly large, so make sure you have plenty of space on your hard drive before you start a long recording. 4. Wear headphones while you’re recording. If you don’t wear headphones, any audio coming from your speakers will be picked up by your microphone which cause an echo on your track that can’t be removed in post. You should also be monitoring yourself while recording so you can hear what you sound like, which will help with mic technique. Always wear headphones when recording. 5. Set your phone and computer notifications to silent. Notifications will distract your listeners from your content and your message. Turn them off. 6. Open your recording software, choose mic input, arm track for recording (if necessary). If you’re going to record with Garageband, check to make sure that there aren’t any plugins enabled. Certain templates have echo and reverb plugins turned on by default, so make sure to disable those before you record. To check, open smart controls (B), hit the little "i" button just left of Master, and scroll down till you see plugins. This is also where you can set input gain levels if your mic doesn’t have a gain knob. 7. Check input gain levels and adjust them to make sure you're getting the best sound possible. Set the input gain levels so that the loudest peaks of your comfortable speaking voice don’t go higher than -12db on the input gain meter. For most recording programs or audio meters, this is where green turns into yellow, or about 80% of maximum. The red area of a meter is the danger zone. If your gain is hitting those red areas or getting close to 0, you need to turn down your gain knob or recording volume slider. 8. Make a test recording to see how you sound and check for any problems or audio issues. D Do this before it’s time to record or stream. Don’t scramble to set everything up last minute. Be prepared in advance. 9. Have an outline prepared for your show. Bullet points are fine, but decide how you are going to start and end your show, and what talking points you're going to cover before you begin. 10. Don't forget to hit record! Choose to record uncompressed .wav or .aiff files, or the highest quality option available (24bit audio, 44,100Hz is fine). After recording, you should export your recording as an uncompressed .wav or .aiff if you’re going to do any additional editing or adding music. These raw recordings are just for editing – after you edit a podcast, the final file should be exported as an MP3 file (either 64, 96, or 128kbps). Double Enders and Backup Recordings If you are going to be doing a podcast with a co-host, or interviewing a guest, I recommend having each person on the call record an audio file on their end, and then putting the individual audio files together later in an editing program. This is known as a double ended. You can also record the audio from the Skype call using a program like Ecamm Call Recorder or Audio Hijack to have as a backup, in case anything goes wrong with one of the local recordings. You might also be interested in checking out a web app like Squadcast.fm that will record multiple people at the same time. If you do use Skype, it is a good idea to record the Skype audio to have as a backup, but I don’t recommend using Skype recordings for your podcast. Skype often introduces artifacts and will drop parts of the audio, but a Skype recording can be a lifesaver if something goes wrong with the local recordings. People make mistakes, sometimes choosing the wrong mic source or forgetting to hit record. It’s nice to have the peace of mind that a backup gives you. If you are going to be talking to a co-host or guest over stripe, or streaming live, make sure to turn off any cloud or backup services (like Dropbox or Google Drive) that might hog your internet bandwidth. You’ll get a higher quality connection if you do. Hey! Aaron from the future (2019) here. You can check out my updated gear guide at https://kit.com/thepodcastdude. There are a few things you’ll need to buy if you want your podcast to sound great. In this episode, I talk about why a great microphone is an essential investment for your show, and how much you’ll need to invest if you want your show to sound great and stand out from other podcasts. My goal was to create a comprehensive podcasting equipment guide for a beginner podcaster. I won't talk about every microphone, interface or pre-amp available, but I'll cover the essential pieces of gear you’ll need to get your show started. Podcasting Equipment Guide There are a lot of things you'll need to buy if you want to start a podcast. In this episode, I talk about why a great microphone is an essential investment for your show, and how much you'll need to invest if you want a great setup that will set you apart from other podcasters. My goal was to create a comprehensive podcasting equipment guide. I don't talk about every microphone, interface or pre-amp available, but I cover the essential pieces of gear you'll need to get started, and share what some of the best podcasters in the world are using to record shows. After listening, you'll know what the best options are for your budget. Key Takeaways: A great microphone is the most important piece of gear you'll buy. To stand out from other podcasts in a crowded market, you have to provide great content and high quality sound. Great sound quality makes your show easier and more enjoyable to listen to. You only get one chance to make a first impression. Make it a good one. If you have a tight budget, consider buying used gear online. When deciding which interface to buy, consider how many mic inputs you'll need. Always, always, always use a pop filter. Wear headphones to avoid causing echo from guests in your recording. If you're serious about making a great podcast and growing your audience, don't settle for the cheapest option. How to Stand Out in a Sea of Podcasts There are thousands of other podcasts vying for your listener's attention. To stand out, you have to provide great content, but you also need to have good sound. Great sound quality makes your show easier and more enjoyable to listen to. Attention to sound quality shows your listeners that you take podcasting seriously, which means they will take you seriously and be more likely to invest time listening to you. You only get one chance to make a first impression. Make it a good one. A Great Microphone Needs Less Post-Production Good mics require less post-production. Most recordings can be improved with post-production (noise removal, EQ, Compression, etc), but a great mic will require less post-production. If you're going to be podcasting, you can either hire someone to edit, mix, and master your show, or spend a little time to learn how to do it yourself. Cheaper mics just don't sound as good. They often have harsher high end, they sound brittle and don't have a good low-end (bass frequencies). A lot of people ask me, “What's the minimum I can spend to get started?” I don't want you to just meet the minimum. If you're going to do it, do it right. Get a great microphone as soon as possible. If you can't afford a decent mic, practice with what you have, but save money to get the mic you want. If You Have a Small Budget, Consider Buying Used Gear I understand that not everyone can spend $800 on a podcasting setup. When I started podcasting, I was using a Shure PG42 USB mic, but I wish I had invested in a better mic right away. If you have a small budget, I recommend checking out Guitar Center's used gear online, or checking your local music store for used gear. Make sure to save the receipts in case anything doesn't work, and make sure you buy from reputable sellers who offer returns if you're shopping on Ebay. If you have a tight budget, consider buying used gear online. Should I Buy a USB Mic, or a XLR Mic? One of the questions I often get asked about microphones is, “Should I get a USB mic, or an XLR mic?” If you're just starting out, and you want to spend the bare minimum, you can get a USB like the Audio Technica ATR-2100 ($60), or the Samson Q2U (also about $60). However, keep in mind that these are budget microphones, and will not give you great sound. Additionally, it's a pain in the butt to record multiple USB mics at the same, so if you plan on recording anyone else in the same place as you, go with XLR mics and an audio interface instead. If you want a good USB mic and are willing to spend a little more, check out the Rode NT USB mic. It's $170 but sounds noticably better than the cheaper USB mics. You'll also need to get a mic stand and a pop filter for each mic too: More on that a bit later. What about Dynamic vs Condenser? A dynamic mic will give you more mid-range warmth and has better off-mic noise rejection, so it won't pick up as much of the room sound or background noise. A condenser mic will give you more detailed recordings, but are often more sensitive than dynamic mics, so they may pick up more room echo and background noise. Dynamic microphones are usually a better choice for podcasting (there are a few exceptions, such as the Shure Beta 87A which is a condenser mic). If you're interested in learning more about dynamic vs condenser mics, check out 10 Statements on Condenser Microphones vs. Dynamic Microphones. The pickup pattern of the mic also affects how much background noise it'll record. Click here to learn more about microphone pickup patterns. XLR Microphones I love and recommend XLR microphones for podcasting. The microphone I use is the Shure Beta 87A. It's $250 new but you can find them used for less, and they sound great and pick up much less background noise then the other mics I've tested in that price range. If you're looking for an affordable XLR mic, you can't go wrong with a Shure SM57 or SM58. They sell new for $100, but you can find them used online for half that price. Pair a SM57 or SM58 with a simple USB interface (like the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2), and you've got a great sounding, affordable recording setup. Recording On the Go If you need to record with multiple microphones on the go, the Zoom H4N ($199) is a great option. This is a small, handheld device that has 2 microphone inputs plus a built-in condenser mic on top. If you need more than two mic inputs, get the Zoom H6 ($399) instead. The H6 has 4 mic inputs in addition to a built-in condenser mic on top. Lavaliere Mics I don't have much experience with using lav mics, but they're commonly used on stages, and they can work pretty well if you're out and about recording interviews. If you're looking for a lav mic you can use with your smartphone, check out the Rode Smartlav ($80), which is an affordable option for recording to an phone. I took a listen to the audio, and it wasn't as high quality as more expensive lav mics, but it's more affordable and convenient for mobile recordings. USB Audio Interfaces If you decide to get a XLR microphone, you will need an interface to convert the analog signal from the mic into a digital signal that your computer can record. Most interfaces connect to your computer via USB, and the smaller ones use USB for power as well. When deciding which interface to buy, consider how many mic inputs you'll need. Things to consider: How many mics will you be using at the same time? If you're just going to be recording yourself, an interface with one or two mic inputs will work fine. If you're going to be recording multiple people in the same room, you'll need an interface with four or maybe eight mic inputs. How many headphone monitoring channels will you need? Most interfaces offer one or two headphone monitoring ports (so you can listen to yourself while recording, or run your computers audio out through your interface). If you need more than one or two headphone jacks, you may want to invest in a headphone amp that you can plug additional headphone lines into. The audio interface that I'm using to record this episode is the Scarlett 2i2 ($149). It's USB powered, has two microphone inputs, and a single headphone jack. Quick note: most interfaces will give you phantom power (or 48v), which is used to power XLR condenser microphones. If you're using a dynamic microphone, you won't need to use phantom power (in fact, make sure it's turned off before you record). If you need more mic inputs (or headphone jacks), you'll want to go with the Scarlett 18i8 ($299). This has 4 mic inputs and 2 headphone jacks. If you need an interface with 8 mic inputs, get the Scarlett 18i20 ($350). Even though this interface has a higher price than the others I've listed so far, I wanted to mention the Apollo Twin Solo ($599). It's not cheap, and this model only has two mic inputs, but if you want to invest a little more money and get a fantastic interface, check it out. Cables, Stands, Pop Filters, and Other Accessories If you go with an XLR microphone, you'll need an XLR cable to connect your microphone to your interface. I use the Monoprice 15ft XLR Cable ($10). It's affordable and works great. You'll also need a mic stand. I use a normal microphone boom stand like the Samson Mic Stand ($20), which works fine for most mics. I would recommend the standard boom stand for most people, but if you want to invest a little more money and get something nice, you could go with the Heil Sound PL-2T Overhead Broadcast Boom ($120. This is a swiveling boom arm that attaches to your desk, and is very convenient for moving the mic around to any position you want. I recommend avoiding any stand that sits directly on your desk. They may cause your mic to pick up any vibrations (caused by typing or bumping the desk), which will cause thumps in your recordings. A shock mount for your mic might alleviate that, but I recommend using a standard boom stand or a boom arm instead. Always use a pop filter. A pop filter diffuses and prevents plosives and sibilants, and lets you get closer to the mic which will make your voice sound more rich and warm and gives a sense of intimacy to your recordings. The Nady Pop Filter is $10 on Amazon and is a no-brainer (pretty much any pop filter will get the job done). Power Conditioner A power conditioner cleans and filters noise and hums that might come through your computer or interface's power supply. You might not need one of these, but if you hear a hum or buzz in your recording that you can't eliminate, try a power conditioner to see if it helps. I plug my computer and pre-processor into a Furman Power Conditioner ($55). Audio Pre-Processors You may have heard about the DBX 286 ($200) before. The DBX 286 is pre-amp, compressor, de-esser, and noise gate. It's a pre-processor used by many professional podcasters to improve the sound quality of raw recordings. If you are brand new to audio, you'll need to invest some time in learning how to use the various controls of this unit, but if you want to get even better sound out of your XLR microphone, it's a solid investment. If you decide to buy a DBX 286 or any other pre-processor or pre-amp, you'll need to buy an additional XLR cable to connect it to your interface. Headphones Headphones are essential for both recording and editing. If you are talking to someone over Skype and you aren't wearing headphones, the sound will come out of your speakers and get recorded in your track which will cause a really annoying echo (and ruin your recording). Wear headphones to avoid getting echo from computer speakers in your recording. The headphones I use and love are the Sony MDR-7506 ($85). If you want to spend a little less, there are a lot of other options, including the Sennheiser HD-280 ($69) and the Panasonic RPHJE120K Earbuds ($12) (fine for listening and even mixing). Recording Software After you buy your recording gear, you'll need to use some kind of software to record audio. If you have a Mac, Quicktime is an easy way to record an audio track. It should already be installed, so you can open it up, select your mic or interface and be good to go. You might also have Garageband included in your Mac, and that works fine for recording audio as well. Audacity is a free program that works on both Mac and Windows. Here's a short tutorial on how to record an audio track in Quicktime or Audacity. If you'd like to spend a little bit of money on a real DAW (digital audio workstation), Reaper is a good affordable option (both Mac and Windows, $60). I use and love Logic Pro X, and there's also Pro Tools or Adobe Audition These programs are more for the audio professional, someone who is going to be doing a lot of editing, mixing and mastering. If you plan on learning and doing the post production yourself, you should invest in one of these programs. Recording Skype Conversations If you're going to be interviewing someone or talking to a co-host over Skype, there are a few options for recording Skype calls including Ecamm Call Recorder (for Mac), and MP3 Skype Recorder (for Windows). I recommend that each person on the call record a track on their computer and then send those to the person responsible for editing (this is called a "double-ender"). You should also record the audio from the Skype conversation to have as a backup. You might also check out Squadcast.fm, it's a web app that makes it easy to record multiple people at the same time. It costs $20/month but does come with a free 14 day trial. My Recommended Setups If you're looking for the most affordable option, I recommend the Samson Q2U with a pop filter and mic stand. This will cost about $100. The setup that I'm currently using is the Shure Beta 87a and an Scarlett 18i8 interface, with a few Shure SM58 mics to have as backups. I invested around $500 for this setup (buying everything used), but it sounds great and I can record up to 4 people at the same time if I need to. If you're serious about making a great podcast and growing your audience, don't settle for the cheapest option. Consider waiting to start recording your podcast until you've saved up enough money to be able to buy the gear you want, so you can make a show that sounds good from the start. You'll thank yourself later, and your listeners will too. CHUCK: And I'm Charles Max Wood from DevChat.tv. This week, we're going to be talking about "Setting Boundaries" and how to handle that. Have any of you had a project where you tried to set boundaries with a client and then went poorly? ASHE: I have. Definitely with a certain type of client, my biggest boundary that I set with new clients is the hours that I work. There are certain class of clients that believe that people should be available all the time no matter what; no matter if it's emergency or not, they didn't really care for this trekked work hours. CURTIS: Yeah, I think we've all had that. I had a client email me once and then call me at 2 am, and my response was my rate went up based on how annoyed I am because -- [Laughter] CURTIS: I was really annoyed! I actually tell clients that my weekend rate and my evening rate is based on how annoyed I am. [Chuck laughs] ASHE: Nice. CHUCK: I just tell my clients that it's double after 5 or 6 pm, whatever is side, unless I decide to work. In other words, if it's on my terms; but if they call me, yeah. I also tell them I don't have an on-call rate because I won't be on-call. CURTIS: Yeah, fair enough. I had one client that was upset a couple of weeks ago that I wouldn't launch their site at midnight for their whole 10-people a day and I told them that I would for $10,000; if they want me to do it, that was my going rate for midnight launches. CHUCK: Nice.
