Hosted on Acast. For our 475th episode, the Senior Staff are quizzing one another as to their own history with I Die: You Die. That is to say, we've each grabbed passages from reviews the other wrote years back, and seeing if the original author can identify the records they were writing about. We're hoping it'll be a chance to think about what has and hasn't changed in terms of our understanding of specific moments and artists within Our Thing. We're also throwing some roses Debby Friday's way, and talking Cold Waves FOMO.
New tunes from The Golden Age of Wrestling, DEBBY FRIDAY, Tough Sell, PLEASEBENiCE, YEP & KCAR, and R.I.P. to Valeria Fellini, member of cub and many other Vancouver bands.
Congrats to Debby Friday on the Polaris win! New tunes from Tinashe, Yu Su, Grimm, KCAR, A. Savage, Mitsk & Wildflower, plus a cameo from Alice.
I'm back with more amazing artist interviews I did at Bumbershoot Arts and Music Festival in Seattle over Labor Day weekend and this episode couldn't be more fun. I start off with the amazing Valerie June -- Grammy-nominated artist, author, poet and yogi. He lighthearted spirit and zest for life is in full force, and she's here to talk to me about spreading joy, love and tapping into one's unique creative self. Next up is Courtney Taylor and Pete Holmström of The Dandy Warhols, who have been making their special brand of eclectic and enigmatic music for more than 25 years. We head down myriad roads -- veering off on multiple detours along the way -- in this compelling exploration of what it takes to continue to unlock new doors in the alternate musical universe they inhabit.I then sit down with Nigerian-born Canadian artist DEBBY FRIDAY, whose debut album released in March, GOOD LUCK, has propelled her into a new orbit. Debby talks to me about what an amazing and groundbreak year this has been and how taking her artistry on the road has helped her mature as an artist.I round out this exciting episode with Evan Smith of local Seattle band, The Dip. Evan came to Seattle to study music at the University of Washington where he met fellow his bandmates to form The Dip. I talk to Evan about how the band has developed moved from playing houseparties to embarking on national tours with Lake Street Dive and then touring Europe with the likes of Durand Jones. It's been an amazing ride!!For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Montreal-born, Toronto-based artist and producer Debby Friday came up in the rave and club scene, and was a DJ before deciding she wanted to make music of her own. Just a few weeks away from the award ceremony, host Carmel Holt sits down with Debby to discuss her journey thus far, and the new album.

Deep scene records which perhaps bracket a certain history of dark electro are on the docket for this week, as we consider records by Controlled Fusion and vProjekt. From the dry double kicks of the German act's mid 90s workman dark electro to the Aussie solo act's attempts to find baroque paths out of the corner intro which aggrotech had painted itself, this is an episode illustrating our recurring comment about genres being cemented by lesser known acts. We're also talking about Skinny Puppy's tour thus far, catching Debby Friday live, and the just announced second iteration of Chicago's Sanctum fest.
Dallas Green (Alexisonfire, City and Colour) on grief, questioning your faith and the honesty that goes into his songwriting. Plus, Debby Friday (26:11) on feeling rootless, Montreal's club culture, and how sobriety changed her life and art.

DEBBY FRIDAY - "SO HARD TO TELL" from the 2023 album GOOD LUCK on Sub Pop Nigerian-born, Toronto-based artist DEBBY FRIDAY needed some convincing before designating today's Song of the Day as the lead single from her debut album, GOOD LUCK, released just last week via Sub Pop Records. "Every single person that I would play the album to was like, 'This song, this song, this song, this song — this one has to be the first single!'" she told Exclaim!. It's a surprisingly softer side than we saw on DEBBY's 2019 EP DEATH DRIVE, with a graceful co-production from Graham Walsh (METZ, Holy Fuck). “I have a lower register and speak with vocal fry so I don't know what came over me when I made this track,” she stated in a press release. “I have never in my life sung like this before and I had no idea I could even make these kinds of sounds with my voice. There's no pitch effects on ‘SO HARD TO TELL,' it's all me.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week Tom briefly revisits his theme of local high school dances of yesteryear that featured live bands, give you a preview of some very worldly artists in the lineup for Summerfolk this year and play some tracks to convince you to come out to Electric Eclectics' event at Black Bellows on June 18. In the first camp, tracks from Perth County Conspiracy, Liverpool, Peter Schilling (a German star who scored a hit with english lyrics by Wiarton's David Lodge) and the Forgotten Rebels. To bridge the themes, a 2004 track by Beverley Glenn Copeland, who played OSCVI and the first two Summerfolks. Coming to Summerfolk this year: Cuban powerhouse Okan with a track featuring Rauzzy Ferrer, the world fusion of Moskitto Bar, Anishnabek artist Aysanabee and the amazing Estonian duo Puuluup. Hear a real stunner from South Africa's Abdullah Ibrahim aka Dollar Brand in honour of the Durham Sauntering Band's performance of the track in Owen Sound's Earth Day Parade. Finally, we wrap up with tracks from Debby Friday, Zones and Lee Paradise, who will be on the bill (with a few others) for Electric Eclectic's June 18 shindig.

An hour showcasing Black artists, featuring new music from DEBBY FRIDAY, MISSY D, SHABAZZ PALACES & SPACE AFRIKA. This is a time for white people, like me, to show up for the BIPOC members of our community. Pledge yourself to anti-racism, educate yourself, and support advocacy groups however you can, be it through donations or some other means of support. Join the demand for radical changes to the way that policing is used and funded here in Vancouver and across the continent.
