It's 17th February 1964 – You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' by The Righteous Brothers is at number one in the UK. Sir Alec Douglas-Home is Prime Minister, Beatlemania has erupted in the United States, Southampton has been granted city status (can you tell this script was running short?), and the Channel Tunnel Agreement was signed, with an estimated completion time of five years (though it would actually take 30). Meanwhile, at the cinema, released as a double feature with The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, is today's topic – The Gorgon. Anthony Nelson Keys, one of four filmmaking sons of comedian Nelson "Bunch" Keys, is well-known in this parish for a number of topics we've discussed before, including Quatermass and the Pit (Ep 34) and The Reptile (Ep 19). He joined Hammer in 1956 as an associate producer, later becoming a producer and occasional screenwriter. Keys also served as General Manager of Bray Studios in the 1960s and eventually co-founded Charlemagne Productions with Christopher Lee—or should that be production (singular)? As we know, they managed only one film together: Nothing but the Night (covered in Episode 42). Richard Pasco plays Paul Heitz. Late in his career, he starred as Tom Colley in The Watcher in the Woods, a favorite film from Ross's youth that we must cover one day. Before that, he played Cardinal Richelieu in the 1966 TV adaptation of The Three Musketeers and Dr. Boris Zargo in Rasputin: The Mad Monk. #BigChrisLee appears as Professor Karl Meister, while his best buddy Peter Cushing plays Dr. Namaroff. Despite popular belief that they always worked together, the pair hadn't shared the screen in four years before this production began. Barbara Shelley stars as Carla Hoffman. Born Barbara Teresa Kowin in 1932, Shelley appeared in over 100 films and TV series. She's celebrated for her roles in horror classics like Village of the Damned, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Rasputin: The Mad Monk, and Quatermass and the Pit. For the role of the monster, former ballerina Prudence Hyman was cast, as the creature was intended to float gracefully, almost like a wraith. (Spoiler alert!) Shelley had hoped to play her character's Gorgon form herself for continuity and even suggested using a special wig with live green garden snakes for realism. Unfortunately, the idea was rejected due to budget and time constraints. After seeing the disappointing Gorgon effects in the final cut, Keys admitted to Shelley that her suggestion might have been the better choice. As #BigChrisLee quipped, “The only thing wrong with The Gorgon is the Gorgon!” Visually, this film is stunning, so let's give a shoutout to Michael Reed's cinematography and Bernard Robinson's production design. Michael Reed's CV includes Dracula: Prince of Darkness, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and five episodes of CITVs Press Gang. Meanwhile, Bernard Robinson designed some of Hammer's greatest productions, spanning from the very first to the last of their classic horror films. #496 Julia Sawalha's Well - Richard has great news about his (pre-breakfast) weight (which may no longer be true by time of broadcast). And in another attempt to get some closure for his romantic past, his guest is fantastic actress and ex-partner, Julia Sawalha. They talk about the impact of Press Gang and the gruelling audition process, working with Rik Mayall and Michael Palin (not at the same time), the process by which Absolutely Fabulous developed and brilliant casting that led to its success and how Julia won Stars in Their Eyes after zero sleep thanks to a Coronation Street actress throwing chairs around. There may be some mention of the relationship, the embarrassment of watching Fist of Fun with Richard's dad, Rich and Julia's shared spirit guide, the extraordinary nicknames of her former partners (including Richard's), some controversy and disagreement about how they broke up and the drunken fights and near death experiences of the Time Gentlemen Please cast. Plus an amazing ghost story and the surprising recasting of a movie sequel. This really has everything. Before we even get an intro out we drop chats about Em's new glasses, Jennifer Saunders not recognising her own Ab Fab daughter, Saffy, aka Julia Sawalha on The Masked Singer, and a side quest about the TV series ‘Press Gang'. Once the intro is done, it's onto Em's love language, F1. Michael just has to endure it, safe to say his facial expressions express his interest throughout. Then it's onto the drama inside Miley Cyrus' family, with Billy Ray now married to a woman who auditioned for Hannah Montana 14 years ago and is 28 years his junior, and her mum Tish marrying her sister Noah's ex-boyfriend, it's giving messy. We pivot to Miley's new song ‘Doctor (Work It Out)' and Katy Perry's career demise, then into our respect for Rihanna giving the bare minimum of a performance at a Billionaire's wedding over the weekend. We tease our Emsolation Extra Sealed Section episode on Kate Middleton's disappearance and Em's theory that Camilla is pulling a ‘Saltburn'. Then it's into vacuum cleaner talk and why Em won't let her husband Scott use their new carpet sucker, with a side quest inspired by Em's Mum calling while we record, an update on Italy's new DNA solution to rogue dog poop, and some bag of lollies chat. The word “flush” is a verb, as in an activity that we do umpteen times a day. It's also an adjective that conveys abundance. Fittingly, Rita Wong's poem “flush” offers a praise song to water's expansive and unceasing presence in our lives — from our toilets to our teacups, from inside our bodies to outside our buildings, and from our soil to our skies. Rita Wong is the author of several poetry collections, including monkeypuzzle (Press Gang, 1998), forage (Nightwood Editions, 2007), and undercurrent (Nightwood Editions, 2015). Wong is an associate professor at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.We're pleased to offer Rita Wong's poem, and invite you to read Pádraig's weekly Poetry Unbound Substack, read the Poetry Unbound book, or listen back to all our episodes.
This week, traditional Irish musician, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Seamus Egan recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, an interview with Seamus. “It's hard to think of an artist in traditional Irish music more influential than Seamus Egan. From his beginnings as a teen prodigy, to his groundbreaking solo work with Shanachie Records, to his founding of Irish-American powerhouse band Solas, to his current work as one of the leading composers and interpreters of the tradition, Egan has inspired multiple generations of musicians and helped define the sound of Irish music today. As a multi-instrumentalist, he's put his mark on the sound of the Irish flute, tenor banjo, guitar, mandolin, tin whistle, and low whistle, among others. As a composer, he was behind the soundtrack for the award-winning film The Brothers McMullen, co-wrote Sarah McLachlan's breakout hit, ‘Weep Not for the Memories,' and has scored numerous documentaries and indie films since. As a bandleader, Solas has been the pre-eminent Irish-American band of their generation for the past 20 years, continuously renewing Irish music with fresh ideas, including a collaboration with Rhiannon Giddens on their 2015 album. As a performer, few others can make so many instruments or such wickedly complex ornaments seem so effortless.” - https://seamuseganproject.com/about Seamus is joined in this performance by Owen Marshall. “Vogue magazine calls musician Owen Marshall ‘A guitar/mandolin/banjo player rivaled in character only by the occasional three-pronged carrot' (Vogue 2009). With the music traditions of Quebec and Nova Scotia just over the border from his home in Vermont and the strong Irish musical scene of Boston to the south, Owen was immersed in the various textures and sounds of the Celtic music from an early age. In addition to touring with acts such as The Press Gang, Copley Street, Haas, Marshall, Walsh, and dance band Riptide, Owen is in demand at music camps throughout New England and the U.S., where he shares his approach to accompanying traditional music.” - www.owenmarshallmusic.com In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1981 archival recording of Ozark originals Bob & Melissa Atchison performing the traditional tune “Miss Miranda” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In this week's guest host segment, renowned traditional folk musician, writer, and step dancer Aubrey Atwater explores shape note singing and the haunting “Abolitionists Hymn.”

Hello, film-loving Dads! Today on Bad Dads Film Review, we're zooming in on some of the most iconic photographs in movie history, exploring a thriller that'll make you rethink your next photo development, and reminiscing about a classic kids' TV show.Top 5 Photos in Movies:Photographs in films can be powerful – they can tell a story, evoke emotion, or even become iconic in their own right. Let's delve into some of the most memorable photos in cinema. Think of the haunting snapshots in The Shining, revealing the hotel's eerie history. Or the poignant Polaroid in Memento, a key piece in the protagonist's fragmented quest. How about the symbolic photo in Blade Runner, hinting at a replicant's memories? Then, there's the unforgettable final scene in Thelma & Louise – a freeze-frame that captures their spirit of freedom. And lastly, the mysterious picture in Vertigo, where a photo sparks an obsession. These images aren't just visuals; they're pivotal pieces of their film's narrative puzzle.Main Feature - One Hour Photo:Our main feature is the chilling One Hour Photo, where Robin Williams takes a stark turn from his usual comedic roles. He plays Sy, a photo technician who becomes disturbingly obsessed with a family whose pictures he develops. It's a gripping thriller that explores themes of loneliness, obsession, and the fine line between everyday life and underlying darkness. Williams delivers a performance that's both unsettling and deeply empathetic, and we'll dive into how this film showcases his incredible range as an actor.Kids TV - Press Gang:Then, for a bit of nostalgia, we're revisiting Press Gang. This late '80s and early '90s show was a gem, featuring a group of teenagers running a newspaper. It's a smart, witty series that tackled various issues, and it's where many of us got introduced to the talents of Julia Sawalha and Dexter Fletcher. While not photography-centered, it's about capturing stories, and we'll discuss how shows like this influenced our understanding of the media and storytelling. So, get ready for a cinematic journey through iconic images, a deep dive into psychological thrills, and a blast from the past with some teenage reporters. It's all happening here on Bad Dads Film Review, where we bring a Dad's perspective to the best (and sometimes the bizarre) in movies and TV!

This week, Pete Lambert and Hannah Cooper join us for a particularly embarrassing Coal Hill School parents' evening, which goes horribly wrong when a Mechanoid is found roaming the premises. It's The Caretaker. Notes and links Pete has a dim memory of something similar happening during his childhood, but mere months before Series 8 aired, the Troops to Teachers programme was introduced, giving veterans the change to fast-track their teacher training so that they could work in schools. The Guardian reports on the scheme here. Vasquez Rocks is a park not far from Hollywood, and was famously used in the original Star Trek episode Arena (the one with the lizard man in a skimpy cocktail dress). A particular famous rock formation, nicknamed Kirk's rock is recreated in the opening shot of this episode. Nathan alludes to the fact that Barbara is absent from Episodes 4 and 5 of The Sensorites because Jacqueline Hill was on holiday, and that she returns from her time on the Sensorite spaceship with a spectacular tan in Episode 6. In the Press Gang episode UnXpected, Mmoloki Chrystie's character Frazer Davis encounters the fictional Colonel X, who was the main character in a cheesy spy-fi show he watched as a child. Michael Jayston is magnificent as Colonel X. (You might be able to find it on YouTube if you look hard enough. It's worth the effort.) As regular listeners will surely attest, the presenters of The Peggy Mount Calamity Hour are not renowned for idling, time wasting or messing about, and it's this sleeves-up / down-to-business approach which has made them a leading light in the Vintage Television Podcasting Community. Those are the words Producer Ken wrote for this introduction after he went on that seminar last week, anyway. So that was money well spent. But it is indeed time to hit the ground running and grab some huge scoops, as Doctor Velvet and Blackout find themselves part of the Press Gang, juggling journalism, school lessons and life-lessons to boot! And speaking of things to be learned, 'Do Not Cross Fred Dineage' should be top of the list if you dare take the Gambit in Anglia Studios... Where can you find the coolest discotheque outside of Miami? Where can you find the most expensive cutlery outside of Buckingham Palace? And where's the best place to hide when Dineage has got that look of pure temper in his eye? (clue: outside) Take a twist and find out... This episode of The SpokenWeb Podcast is a little different than episodes you've heard from us before. It is a kind of “feminist memory-work” - An audio collage, a method, an approach to community building which aims to honor lesbian-feminist collective histories and renewed public attention to lesbian feminist culture.Episode producers – Felicity Tayler, Mathieu Aubin and Scott Girouard - cordially invite you into their feminist sonic memory world: A three-part audio collage of “Lesbian Liberation Across Media”. A virtual film screening and discussion held Summer 2020 in partnership with SpokenWeb, and featuring three iconic lesbian feminist films: “A Working Women's Collective” (1974), “Labyris Rising” (1980), and “Proud Lives: Christine Bearchell”(2007). Through a weaving together of the voices of over 60 participants in attendance, along with original music scores, archival clips and more - we ask, how do we listen to Canadian lesbian liberation movements across media? Whether it's a feature length film or a spirited virtual chat session, this audio collage episode invites you to experience a citational politics that makes audible the intergenerational relationships, conflicting concerns, nostalgic reveries, and a sense of togetherness while apart in the pandemic-related time of crisis.Episode Producers: Felicity Tayler is the E-Research Librarian at University of Ottawa with a portfolio in Research Data Management and currently the PhD Interim Head, Research Services Arts & Special Collections uOttawa.
