If such a law of sin in believers, it is doubtless their duty to find it out, to find it so to be. The more they are aware of its power, the less they will feel its effects. It will not at all advantage a man to have a wasting fever and not to discover it, or a fire lying secretly in his house and not to know it. So much as men find of this law in them, so much they will abhor it and themselves, and no more. Proportional also to their discovery of it will be their earnestness for grace, nor will it rise higher.

When you have a system where ministers almost never understand their portfolios, civil servants change jobs every few months, and MPs don't grasp parliamentary procedure even after decades in office — is the problem the people, or the structure they work in?Today's guest, political journalist Ian Dunt, studies the systemic reasons governments succeed and fail. And in his book How Westminster Works ...and Why It Doesn't, he argues that Britain's government dysfunction and multi-decade failure to solve its key problems stems primarily from bad incentives and bad processes. Even brilliant, well-intentioned people are set up to fail by a long list of institutional absurdities that Ian runs through — from the constant churn of ministers and civil servants that means no one understands what they're working on, to the “pathological national sentimentality” that keeps 10 Downing Street (a 17th century townhouse) as the beating heart of British government. While some of these are unique British failings, we see similar dynamics in other governments and large corporations around the world. But Ian also lays out how some countries have found structural solutions that help ensure decisions are made by the right people, with the information they need, and that success is rewarded.Links to learn more, video, highlights, and full transcript. This week's Extra Alarm insights come to us from Linda Willing, who tackles the significance of proportional responses. Willing emphasizes how underreaction can condone inappropriate behavior, while overreaction can waste resources and damage trust. Using real-life examples, she illustrates that responses should be fair, consistent and proportional to the incidents, whether on the fireground or in organizational settings. Disproportionate responses can lead to further problems, trust issues and morale damage.

Both Ontario and Germany just had elections. In Germany, more than 80% of the electorate turned out to vote. In Ontario, it was less than 50%. In Germany, the number of seats in the German parliament reflected what voters said with their ballots. In the Ontario election, just 20% of the voters were able to hand Doug Ford a sizeable majority. Fair Vote Canada says the two elections pose a sharp contrast in what democracy can be. We're joined by Ted Cragg, a long-time volunteer with Fair Vote Canada.

Counting Chaos: Is Ireland's Voting System Broken? With Seth Barrett Tillman

In this episode of the podcast, Niall is joined by Professor Seth Barrett Tillman from Maynooth University's Law and Criminology department to discuss Ireland's proportional representation system and its impact on elections. With voters feeling increasingly disillusioned, Seth breaks down the mechanics of the system, its strengths, and its glaring flaws.Seth challenges the idea that proportional representation always results in a fair outcome, explaining: “Proportional representation makes sure that minorities have at least a voice, even if they don't really have an element of control.” He also highlights the stark voting disparities across the country, pointing out that in Kerry, a candidate needs over 13,000 votes to reach the quota, while in Dublin Central, it takes just 6,500. “That is, in my view, very unfair,” he states. As the conversation unfolds, Seth and Niall debate whether low-quality votes deep in the count are undermining democracy, how the lack of transparency in Ireland's system obscures accountability, and why the electoral structure favors urban constituencies over rural voters. They also touch on international comparisons, from the U.S. Electoral College to mandatory voting in Australia.Niall shares his own frustrations from running in the European elections, comparing the convoluted counting system to the ‘pub debate logic' of a World Cup qualifier—where one team's fate depends on a complex mix of other results. Meanwhile, Seth explores whether shifting from population-based representation to voter-based constituencies could bring a fairer balance to Ireland's political landscape. Is the system broken, or is it simply misunderstood? Would Ireland benefit from a two-party system, or is coalition politics the best we can hope for? And more importantly—should you really be allowed to win a seat because someone thought you "looked nice"? Tune in for a fascinating deep dive into the heart of Ireland's electoral process.

Getting convicted of a crime can have lots of further, harmful consequences, perhaps you'll lose your home or job. Yet those consequences don't fall equally: some might go back to something like their previous lives after imprisonment, where others can't. And often that has to do with wider social injustices. So, is that unfair? Ought the state make punishment more proportionate? Today's guest is Dr Helen Brown Coverdale, Lecturer in Political Theory at UCL Political Science. Helen's research explores these issues, arguing that we should reform punishment to mitigate some of these harms. Mentioned in this episode:Helen Brown Coverdale (2024) Putting Proportional Punishment into Perspective. This week on The Nick Halaris Show we are featuring Deb Otis, the Director of Research and Policy at FairVote, a nonpartisan organization seeking better elections in America through two key reforms: 1. Ranked choice voting and 2. Proportional representation in Congress.  Deb is a passionate and experienced civic activist and an expert on comparative electoral systems.  I wanted to have Deb on the show to learn more about FairVote's two big ideas for reforming American elections and understand why she and her colleagues think they are so crucial for our democracy.  Whether it's extreme voter dissatisfaction with Congress, low voter turnout in local elections, gerrymandered partisan primaries, or debates about the efficacy of the Electoral College and mail-in voting, there's no shortage of concern about our democratic processes these days.  Fortunately, reformers like Deb and previous Nick Halaris Show guest Nick Troiano of Unite America, are stepping forward with practical reforms designed to make our elections more adequately reflect the actual will of the people.  Tune in to this important episode to learn:  How ranked-choice voting works and why it might be a better optionWhat proportional representation is and how it could improve Congressional function by changing the incentive structures of politicsWhy we should also pursue both primary reform and campaign finance reform are necessaryIdeas for improving voter engagement& Much, much moreStay tuned to the end to learn how an early interest in politics and experiences working on the ground in campaigns inspired Deb to commit her life to protecting and improving our democracy.  As always, I hope you all enjoy this episode.  Thanks for tuning in!      Love this episode? There's no doubt that the console games space at large is predicated on some shaky economics, and recent layoffs are just the beginning of what will likely be a substantial purging of talent from the ranks of teams around the world. Late last year, we caught wind (via the Insomniac leaks) that Sony was planning layoffs, and would close one of its teams, too. This turned out to be true: 8% of PlayStation's workforce has been released, London Studio is no more, and multiple games have been cancelled, including a Twisted Metal project. Will these drastic moves help buttress the PlayStation brand's ever-narrowing profit margin, and allow the world-class brand to operate from a point of renewed strength? Or is the pain only beginning? Plus: Neil Druckmann may be burning out, footage of a never-released LittleBigPlanet product emerges on the net, cheaters begin ruining Helldivers 2, and more. At the end of our show, we field audience questions, as usual. Where do we fall on the recently-brewing localization fiasco surrounding games like Unicorn Overlord? How come Stellar Blade got such trouble for its fanservice while Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's blatant fanservice is celebrated? Should everyone be a little nicer to Geoff Keighley? In the early 1990s, Mongolia began a transition from socialism to a market democracy. In the process, the country became more than ever dependent on international mining revenue. Nearly thirty years later, many of Mongolia's poor and rural feel that, rather than share in the prosperity the transition was supposed to spread, they have been forgotten. Moral Economic Transitions in the Mongolian Borderlands (UCL Press, 2023) analyzes this period of change from the viewpoint of the rural township of Magtaal on the Chinese border. After the end of socialism, the population of this resource-rich area found itself without employment or state institutions yet surrounded by lush nature and mere kilometers from the voracious Chinese market. A two-tiered resource-extractive political-economic system developed. At the same time as large-scale, formal, legally sanctioned conglomerates arrived to extract oil and other resources, local residents grew increasingly dependent on the Chinese-funded informal, illegal cross-border wildlife trade. More than a story about rampant capitalist extraction in the resource frontier, this book intimately details the complex inner worlds, moral ambiguities, and emergent collective politics constructed by individuals who feel caught in political-economic shifts that are largely outside of their control. The Constitution Study with Host Paul Engel – In recent times, many voices clamor for a proportional Israeli response to Hamas attacks. Yet, if Israel were to retaliate in kind, matching Hamas's tactics, the outcomes would be horrifying. Is a proportional reaction justified, or does it pull us down to a level of inhumanity, matching body counts and horrors? This piece delves into the notion of proportionality, urging us to envision a scenario...

It's common for parents to believe that the “punishment” of estrangement is supposed to fit the “crime” – whatever it may be – to which their adult child is holding them accountable by keeping their distance. This idea that the length or perceived severity of estrangement correlates exclusively to an injury or injuries suffered by the adult child in childhood is, in most cases, a myth. Trying to map your adult child's estrangement onto their childhood may be nothing more than an exercise in frustration. Most parents remember making sacrifices and efforts on their children's behalf. Therefore they tend to look back at the time as, at worst, a mixed bag for their child(ren). Relationships are complicated. So is estrangement. In this myth-busting episode, Tina advises listeners to stop linking present estrangement behavior to the distant past, and embrace the current context of accumulated experience. For more on understanding why adult children cut off their parents and what you can do about it, read Tina's book, Reconnecting With Your Estranged Adult Child. How much did Hamas prep for a counter attack from Israel? They must've anticipated a response. Every part of the system is invested in lying to you. How Mossad miss something as massive as the Gaza invasion? A failure of intel. An attack that will lead to a much larger conflict.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
