Against the hostile backdrop of hate crimes and family rejection in the 1990s, with few celebrities or politicians willing to be out publicly, Curve magazine dared to celebrate a full, inclusive range of lesbians, queer women, and nonbinary people, seeding some of the most pressing conversations around LGBTQ+ community today. Growing up, Franco never saw any representation of queer women — she didn't even know it was possible for a woman to be gay. When she realized she was a lesbian, it changed the course of her life. In 1990, Franco created a safe place for lesbians in the form of Curve magazine. Her approach to threats and erasure in the ‘90s was to highlight all kinds of LGBTQ+ women and make them beautifully visible. The magazine helped build the foundation for the movements being led by today's queer activists. In this episode host Michael Shields, Jen Rainin, and Rivkah Beth Medow dig deeply into what the existence of Curve magazine meant to lesbians and the lesbian community while marveling about the obstacles and adversities Franco Stevens navigated bringing Curve to life. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Wednesday morning, the 24th of May, 2023 and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the first book of the Bible, Genesis 18:14, God asks Abraham, “Is there anything too difficult for Me?” Then we go to Zachariah 10:1: “Ask the Lord for rainIn the time of the latter rain.The Lord will make flashing clouds;He will give them showers of rain,Grass in the field for everyone.”Rain is a blessing from God. You will only really understand what I have just said if you have been through a horrific time of drought. There is nothing worse than drought. You get up every single morning, the sun comes up, the small plants try to make a recovery, and by 9 o'clock they are shrivelled up again. Dust blows everywhere, there is no water, and the cattle are thin. It is horrific - but when the gentle rain comes and the new grass comes and the cattle get fat and the crops start growing, it is a blessing from God. Oh yes, our Lord is the Rainmaker. That is not a derogatory term or a familiar term. He is the only One who can make rain. No one else can make rain. You know, sometimes, some of the men meet me and they say tongue in cheek, “Here comes the rainmaker,” and I quickly pull them up and I say, “No, I am not the rainmaker but I am one of His sons.” Oh folks, I can't explain it to you, when you pray the prayer of faith and you believe, you really believe, God comes through for you every time. In 2008, we had the biggest tent in the world, it could seat 30,000 men. We had 30,000 men inside and 30,000 men outside. It was an incredible experience and I will never forget it. On the Saturday night, I said to the boys, “Guys, you need to pack up early tomorrow. We are going to have that last service and straight after the service, the Lord is going to bring rain on this farm. I really believe it and I have asked Him for it.” Do you know what happened? At about three in the morning, I heard these big coaches, big busses from Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg, starting to pull out from the camping area. I don't know why, I am a man of little faith, but I started crying out to the Lord, “Lord, they are leaving already. They are not even waiting for the last service.” No, they weren't doing that. They heard what I was saying on Saturday night. They didn't want to get stuck in the fields so they were parking their vehicles on the side of the road and walking back to the big tent. I have got 60,000 witnesses, after the meeting I said the benediction and goodbye to the boys, then I said, “Guys, get home now,” and as we walked out of the tent, drip, drip, drip and then showers. It rained for three days and three nights! Our God is the Rainmaker, He is the Miracle-worker, and He loves you. Call on Him today and He will help you.Jesus bless you and goodbye.

Decades later, in the wake of a disabling injury, Franco learns that Curve will fold within the year and questions the relevance of the magazine in the face of accelerating threats to LGBTQ+ community. To forge a path forward, Franco reaches out to women working in today's queer spaces to understand what queer women need today and how Curve can continue to serve the community. Jen Rainin founded 'Frankly Speaking Films' with Rivkah Beth Medow in 2020 to produce media that centers strong LGBTQ+ women and non-binary people to increase visibility and spark change. The idea behind this podcast has been rolling around in my brain for sometime now, but it is because of the time that I was given to study the topic of WORSHIP more in depth during the pandemic that I was able to really have a focus and a vision for Surprised By Light. Taken from the the hymn written by William Cowper, surprised by light references the effect that the power of God has on a broken and desperate soul as the glory of God and the gospel pierce through the fog and gloom of a sin-cursed soul. We are all sin-cursed souls, but it is the one who acknowledge it and cling to the One who can release them from their bondage that truly experience the surprise of Light that comes from Jesus Christ. The problem with trying to detect religion is that the spirit behind it has been allowed to set the rules and parameters of what we as Christians are supposed to do and be.In order to defeat religion we must change the parameters religion sets to judge from.In religion, the servant must earn redemptionReligion says that sin committed angers God and causes Him enact judgement on the sinner.God’s servants must take on this same anger towards those perceived as sinning or not keeping the rules.The servants of God must now become the punitive agent to carry out the judgementWe see this mindset in the religious spirited in the bibleHere are the correct parameters:Redemption is a free gift given and paid for by GodWhen someone sins the Father’s love never changes towards those who sinnedGod always wants those who stumbled to come to Him to be cleaned to eliminate any hold the enemy may have gained on themGod’s children are to extend this same love and forgiveness to others with the purpose of restoring them to their heavenly Father.Let’s look in the bible at the religious leaders to see the characteristics of a religious spirit.Unrighteous judgement - Woman caught in adulterySelf-righteous - These will base their spirituality on outward showings rather than on inward love for Jesus and people.Rules based - Mark 7:5-9 NAS 5 The Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands? 6 And He said to them, Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: 'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. 7 'BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.' 8 Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men. 9 He was also saying to them, You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.Condemnation, guilt and shame coming from...Here is what the religious spirit uses to subdue people with:AccusationFearCatch you in your words, self-righteousness, Here are the characteristics of relationship:Mercy triumphs over judgementSelf-righteousness is pride and pride blinds.Thus, religious people think they have a corner on truth when they are actually completely blind.Rebellion from religion is not the right way to correct or oppose it.The following are 9signs of a religious spirit:1. They judge other people by their appearance.God judges us by our heart, but man judges by outward appearanceIn many churches people have not felt welcome or have even been condemned by church leadership because they had a tattoo, a nose ring, or dressed a certain way.In some legalistic churches men have to wear a suit and tie to attend church and ladies are not allowed to wear makeup and pants or cut their hair.2. They try to earn God's love and salvation.3. They try to conform to outward holiness without inward transformation.Jesus strongly rebuked those who merely attempted to cleanse the outer man without allowing God to deal with the heart4. They are often critical of others walk with God.I have noticed that the more religious a person is, the more critical they are of other believers and ministers.Since they are so hard on themselves religious people generally don't understand grace and they walk in self-condemnationBecause of this they are also judgmentally hard on other people.5. They perform Christian duties but have no passion or hunger for God.In the religious system serving God is done by attending church, reading the bible, praying, teaching a sunday school class, etc.There is no deep relationship with God nor do they hunger and thirst for Him.6. They desire position and honor in the church more than honor from God.Those with a religious spirit hinge their life and identity upon their outward man.Hence, they are drawn to having recognition and titles in the church world.If they cannot legitimately get a ministerial title from their local church, they will hook up with an online course or other entity that will give them some kind of badge or card signifying they are a minister or chaplain.7. Their identity is rooted in a lifestyle of Christianity instead of in Christ.Mature Christ-followers receive their main identity in the fact they are sons of God, whereas religious people receive their main identity in the things they attempt to do for God and their church.8. You know about the truth of Jesus but not the way of Jesus.Religious people make a big deal about the doctrines they accumulate through head knowledge. They make the mistake of thinking that having good doctrine means they are mature believers. Just because we may know about God doesn't mean we commune with God and know Him experientially.9. You project righteousness but inwardly are filled with anger and resentment.Religious people know the entire Christian lingo, know how to act and project themselves in certain settings and use this act to gain influence in church circles.

It was separated into divisions, with each carrying a different banner. There were many more of these evil divisions beyond my scope of vision, but those in the vanguard of this terrible horde from hell seemed to be the most powerful.
