As a financial advisor, you're taught to ask, “When do you want to retire?” But what if that question is pointing clients toward a goal they don't actually want?In this episode, I'm talking with Derek Coburn—longtime advisor and author of Let's Retire Retirement—to talk about how changing that one question can completely shift the way you serve your clients.Derek makes a strong case that instead of chasing some number or arbitrary retirement date, we should be asking: Do you even want to retire? And what are you putting off today for a future that might not play out the way you imagine? He shares why helping clients stay engaged in purposeful work—even part-time—can reduce financial pressure, increase fulfillment, and create more space for what matters most right now.Great advising isn't about getting clients to the end, it's about making the in-between years count.3 of the biggest insights from Derek Coburn …#1.) Why “Un-Retirement” Is on the RiseRoughly 25–30% of retirees are returning to work. Not because they need the money, but because they miss purpose, connection, and contribution. Derek explains why it's time for advisors to stop assuming retirement is the goal and start asking if it's even the right fit.#2.) The Time Machine Effect: Would You Pay to Go Back in Time?Derek shares a powerful thought experiment: how much would you pay to go back in time for just one more night with your kid at age 10? It's a reminder that time, not money, is our most valuable asset. As advisors, helping clients reframe retirement isn't just a financial strategy, it's a chance to give them more life in their years right now.#3.) How to Attract Clients You Actually Want to Work WithIf you're taking on clients just to hit a number, it's only a matter of time before your calendar is filled with people who drain you. Derek shares how he shifted from goal-chasing to values-aligned client growth—and why that mindset leads to both fulfillment and better results.SHOW NOTEShttps://bradleyjohnson.com/121FREE GIFT + JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWToday's Gift: Get a copy of Derek's book, "Let's Retire Retirement" [while supplies last]To get access to today's free gift AND become a DBDL Insider with VIP access to future resources and exclusive content, text "121" to 785-800-3235. *Message and data rates may apply. What if life forced you to step away from your business tomorrow? Would it keep running or come to a halt? That's exactly what Dylan Bond—a 30-year financial advisor and Triad member—was forced to find out when a life-threatening cancer diagnosis stopped him in his tracks.Despite undergoing major surgery, radiation, and months of recovery, Dylan's firm gathered $25M in assets—outpacing the previous year on a pro rata basis. He shares the systems that made that possible, and the shift that helped him stop operating as a one-man show.More importantly, his experience reshaped how he advises clients—especially those who are financially set but emotionally stuck. Why Most Retirees Live Like They're Broke (Even When They're Not)Dylan reveals how fear and a lack of planning keeps wealthy retirees from spending money. He explains the simple mindset shift (and plan) that gives clients permission to enjoy their wealth—without guilt or anxiety.#3.) Imagine a business that doesn't depend on you—one that scales, thrives, and grows without your constant involvement. That's exactly what Alex Judd reveals in this episode.Alex spent years at the Dave Ramsey organization as the former host of the EntreLeadership Podcast, giving him the opportunity to learn from one of the most influential names in personal finance. He saw firsthand how Dave empowered his team, fostered a culture of accountability, and scaled a personal brand into a massive organization—all without losing control.Eventually, Alex launched his own venture, carrying those lessons with him. As the Founder & CEO of Path for Growth, he now offers community, coaching, and experiences for impact-driven leaders. In this episode, you'll learn how to go from being an advisor working in your business to becoming the CEO who actually leads it—mastering delegation, building systems that run smoothly, and creating a business that thrives without your constant oversight.4 of the biggest insights from Alex…1.) The Artist's Trap: Why Your Personality Isn't a Business Model Most entrepreneurs start as the “artist” in their business—personally handling everything because they're great at what they do. But Alex reveals why this approach is a trap. If your business depends entirely on your talent, energy, and personality, it's not scalable. Alex shares how to escape the artist's trap and become a true leader—one who builds a business that runs smoothly, even when you're not in the room.2.) Healthy Accountability Drives GrowthAlex explains how to create a culture of feedback where team members feel empowered rather than criticized. How Founders Can Delegate Their Unique Skills and TalentsMany founders struggle to delegate their strongest skills because those talents come naturally to them. But Alex shares how to break this barrier by identifying your core strengths, distilling them into clear, teachable processes, and empowering your team to replicate them. He reveals why your greatest strengths can become your greatest bottleneck if not properly transferred.SHOW NOTEShttps://bradleyjohnson.com/117FOLLOW BRAD JOHNSON ON SOCIALTwitterInstagramLinkedInFOLLOW DBDL ON SOCIAL:YouTubeTwitterInstagramLinkedInFacebookDISCLOSURE DBDL podcast episode conversations are intended to provide financial advisors with ideas, strategies, concepts and tools that could be incorporated into their business and their life. Live from Triad's Scale Summit in Atlanta, I got the opportunity to sit down with two Triad members who are driving SHP Financial's incredible growth—founding partner Keith Ellis Jr. and Chief Operating Officer Michelle Short. In this behind-the-scenes conversation, we unpack how SHP went from a 4-person startup to a 55-person firm who gathered $380M of total assets in 2024, growing to $1.6B of AUM. You'll hear how they scaled without burning out, built career tracks that turned interns into $80M producers, and created a culture-backed onboarding system that scales consistency, deepens trust, and reinforces what makes SHP different. 3 of the biggest insights from Keith and Michelle… #1.) How SHP Gathered $380M of Total Assets in 2024SHP didn't grow by grinding, they grew by stepping back. Instead of meeting with every client, SHP's founders focused on high-net-worth clients while their team of specialists handled planning, follow-up, and client management. The result? $380M of total assets without burnout or bottlenecks. #2.) The Onboarding System That Scales Consistency, Trust, and ReferralsEvery SHP hire starts with a Vision Session, a 1:1 with a partner, and a deep dive into the firm's culture handbook. From “Shipmates” to Enneagram walls, everything is built to align the team and protect the client experience. That's how SHP builds internal trust—and earns referrals without ever asking. #3.) SHP's 3-Tier Client Model That Protects Founder TimeBy segmenting clients into three tiers, SHP ensures their founders only meet with $2.5M+ prospects—while newer advisors gain reps with clients under $1M. The result? More capacity, clearer career paths, and 4x the asset growth with half the meetings.SHOW NOTEShttps://bradleyjohnson.com/116FREE GIFT + JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWToday's Gift: 30 minute 1:1 coaching call with BradAre you a financial advisor who feels stuck, needs help, or simply wants to have a conversation with Brad? Setbacks aren't a possibility, they're a promise. Things will break. People will disappoint. Plans will unravel.Yet we act surprised, as if hardship wasn't part of the deal. But what if the real problem isn't the setback itself, it's believing it wasn't coming? In this solo episode, I share the single most important mindset shift I've made since becoming an entrepreneur—one that's helped me lead through sleepless nights, personnel challenges, and the unpredictable highs and lows of building a business from the ground up.It all started with a passage from Ryan Holiday's The Daily Stoic: “The glass is already broken.”That simple idea changed how I view problems. And more importantly, how I prepare for them.I'll unpack what it means, how I've applied it in business and life, and how you can use it to build systems that keep you calm, clear, and confident—especially when things don't go according to plan. 3 of the biggest insights from Brad… 1.) Setbacks aren't optional, they're inevitable. When things break, most leaders react with stress, blame, or panic. But those emotions disappear when you start planning for problems instead of wishing they won't happen. 2.) “The glass is already broken.” It's a simple, powerful mindset shift. Accept the fall before it happens, and you won't be rattled when it does. 3.) Great leaders don't avoid problems. 111: Solo - 5 Hard Truths from 20 Years in Finance with Brad Johnson

Ten years ago, I thought success was all about the numbers — AUM, revenue, production, etc. But after two decades in the industry and thousands of conversations with advisors, I've seen behind the curtain.I've met advisors making millions who are secretly miserable… and others earning far less who are truly winning in every category that matters. In this short solo episode, I'm sharing the 5 hard truths I wish someone told me earlier — the same ones we now teach inside Triad. These are the lessons that helped me (and the advisors we coach) grow faster, lead better, and actually enjoy both the business and the life we're building.5 Lessons to Succeed as a Financial Advisor …1.) Relationships Beat RevenueEarly on, I was chasing numbers — production, AUM, call volume. But the most fulfilled advisors aren't chasing clients; they're building real relationships. The kind that go beyond the portfolio and into family, values, and legacy. When you lead with service, the business takes care of itself.2.) Simplicity Sells. Complexity RepelsTop advisors take complex ideas and make them simple. Visuals, frameworks, and analogies aren't gimmicks, they're how you create clarity. And clarity builds trust. If a prospect doesn't understand your value, they won't pay for it. Clarity creates confidence3.) Growth Without Alignment = BurnoutYou can build a business that looks great from the outside and be miserable on the inside. I've seen it too many times. Growth only works if it aligns with your life. If your business doesn't support your values, family, or well-being, it's just a matter of time before burnout hits.4.) Proximity is PowerYou don't need all the answers, but you do need the right people around you. I've seen entire businesses transform because an advisor got in the right room, asked the right questions, and stayed curious. Proximity accelerates growth. Don't go it alone.5.) Advisors Are Leaders (Not Just Planners)Advisors aren't just here to give advice. You're here to lead. To guide families through fear, change, transitions, and uncertainty. If you only give advice, you inform. But when you lead with vision and empathy, you transform. That's the difference between a commodity and a category of one.SHOW NOTEShttps://bradleyjohnson.com/111FREE GIFT + JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWToday's Gift: 30 minute 1:1 coaching call with BradAre you a financial advisor who feels stuck, needs help, or simply wants to have a conversation with Brad? What if understanding one simple framework could transform your marriage, improve communication, and make you a better leader in your business? That's what we're diving into today with Enneagram expert Christa Hardin—and for the first time ever, my wife, Sarah, is co-hosting with me.The Enneagram isn't just another personality test, it's a powerful tool that helps you understand how you and the people around you think, communicate, and handle challenges. Sarah and I have used it in our own marriage, and it's been a game-changer—not just at home, but in running a business and leading a team, too.In this episode, we're breaking down how different personality types handle stress, make decisions, and navigate conflict—insights that are just as valuable for your firm as they are for your marriage. How Your Enneagram Type Impacts Your Business & MarriageUnderstanding your Enneagram type can help you recognize your strengths and blind spots—not just in your relationships, but in your practice. Are you a natural risk-taker (Type 7) who jumps into business decisions too fast? Or a problem-solver (Type 6) who overanalyzes and struggles with decision fatigue? Knowing this can help you make more confident, intentional choices—both at work and at home.#2.) The 5-to-1 Rule for High-Stakes ConversationsWhether you're talking to a client about their financial future or having a tough conversation with your spouse, the way you communicate matters. Christa shares the 5-to-1 ratio—five positive interactions for every one piece of constructive feedback. Applying this in client meetings builds trust. Using it at home strengthens your marriage. Either way, it's a simple but powerful way to improve communication in every area of your life.#3.) Balancing Business & Marriage Takes StrategyMany financial advisors work with their spouse or have a partner who supports their growing business. The problem? Work and home life start blending together, leading to burnout, miscommunication, or resentment. What if the difference between being good and being truly great was simply a mindset shift?Too many entrepreneurs and business leaders play it safe—setting goals that feel achievable instead of ones that push their limits. They stay “relatable” instead of aiming to be remarkable. But according to today's guest, Jon Acuff, real breakthroughs happen when you set goals that challenge you.Jon Acuff is an INC Top 100 Leadership Speaker and the New York Times bestselling author of ten books, including his most recent, All It Takes Is A Goal.In this episode, we break down why so many people settle for less than they're capable of—and how to break free from it. We also dive into the psychology of goal setting—why most people fail, how to tap into the right kind of motivation, and why belief follows action (not the other way around).3 of the biggest insights from Jon Acuff …#1.) Remarkability vs. Relatability—Why Playing it Safe is a MistakeMost people try to blend in, but standing out is where the real opportunity lies. Jon explains why financial advisors and business owners should focus on being remarkable rather than just relatable—because the people who get remembered are the ones who dare to be different.#2.) Most advisors dream of growing their business to the next level without grinding themselves into burnout. But how do you scale without sacrificing your time, freedom, and sanity? In this milestone 100th episode of Do Business. Do Life., I sat down with returning guest, Anthony Pellegrino, founder of Goldstone Financial Group. His first appearance on the show (Episode 16) was one of the most downloaded ever, and now he's back to share how he has doubled his firm's assets year over year—from $232M to over $460M+—all while building a business that runs without him behind the desk. For years, Anthony prided himself on being a machine—unstoppable, always grinding. But a simple conversation with his grandmother changed everything when she told him, "Machines break." That wake-up call forced him to rethink his approach and build a firm that could scale beyond just him.In this episode, Anthony breaks down how he transformed his role from financial advisor to CEO & visionary, built a team of elite advisors, and developed a business model that thrives without him being in the trenches. If you've become the bottleneck in your firm, this episode reveals Anthony's proven system for breaking free and scaling beyond what you ever thought was possible. 3 of the biggest insights from Anthony Pellegrino …#1.) If you're still doing all the client work, you're the bottleneck. Anthony shares how he removed himself from sales, client servicing, and marketing—without losing clients and growing exponentially#2.) Helping others scale strengthens your own success. Anthony doesn't just build his own firm—he openly shares his strategies with other advisors, proving that growth isn't a zero-sum game. His collaboration with leaders like Matt Dixon highlights how teaching others can reinforce your own systems and elevate the entire industry.#3.) Hiring doesn't create competitors—it builds a stronger business. Anthony rejected the fear that training advisors would lead them to go out on their own. Instead, he built a system and culture so strong that top talent never wants to leave.SHOW NOTEShttps://bradleyjohnson.com/100FREE GIFT + JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWToday's Gift: 30 minute 1:1 coaching call with BradAre you a financial advisor who feels stuck, needs help, or simply wants to have a conversation with Brad? Patric shares the exact strategies high-end restaurants use to turn first-time guests into lifelong patrons, and we explore how financial advisors can do the same by building trust, creating memorable interactions, and delivering next-level service. The biggest insights from Patric Yumul …The "Keystone Light" Effect: How a simple act of listening and personalized service at The French Laundry created a legendary guest experience—and how you can replicate this level of attentiveness in your own businessWhy Relationships > Transactions: In a world where everything is commoditized, the best way to stand out is through hospitality—making clients feel valued, understood, and like VIPs at every interactionThe Power of Culture in Scaling a Business: Most businesses fail not because of bad products, but because of poor leadership and team culture. Patric explains how he transformed a failing restaurant losing $400K into a thriving business generating $600K by focusing on people firstHandling Poor Performers & Leadership Accountability: Patric stresses that when a team member underperforms, leaders must first look at themselves. Do they have the right tools, training, and expectations? If the issue is misalignment, it's on the leader to fix it. Have you ever wondered how McDonald's turned a simple hamburger into the Big Mac—one of the most iconic products in the world? What made them so different from every other hamburger stand that existed? They didn't just sell ingredients; they sold a process, a unique experience that only they could deliver. Most financial advisors fall into the same trap as the countless hamburger stands that never made it big. They focus on selling “ingredients” like annuities, ETFs, or asset managers. But when your offer looks and sounds just like the firm's down the block, how can clients tell the difference? McDonald's thrived because they didn't just sell hamburgers—they sold a Big Mac. And in the same way, the advisors who scale their businesses are the ones who package their expertise into a proprietary, one-of-a-kind process that clients can't get anywhere else.In this episode, I'll show you how to do the same for your advisory firm by turning your services into a proprietary, trademarked process that sets you apart in a crowded industry.3 Big Insights from This Episode:1.) In nearly two decades of working with some of the world's top independent financial advisors, I've seen all kinds of hidden addictions—and, honestly, I've been guilty of a few myself. From the outside, it might look like everyone has it all together: polished, successful, in control. But beneath the surface, even the most disciplined and high-achieving people in this business are dealing with struggles we rarely acknowledge. And it's not always the obvious issues society labels as “addictions.” Oftentimes they're subtle, often invisible patterns we fall into—patterns that can damage relationships, compromise health, and eventually eat away at our peace of mind. That's why I wanted to invite Ian Cron on the show. He's releasing a new book, The Fix, which takes a fresh and deeply compassionate look at these hidden habits. Ian points out that while most people think of addiction in terms of substances like drugs or alcohol, there's a whole spectrum of “quick fixes” that quietly complicate our lives—things like overworking, people-pleasing, or constantly chasing achievement. These behaviors might not leave bottles stashed in desk drawers, but they can be just as damaging. Ian shares practical principles from his book that go beyond traditional ideas of addiction, offering guidance for anyone who wants to reclaim control, set healthier boundaries, and live a more intentional life.3 of the biggest insights from Ian Cron …1.) How to recognize hidden addictions—and why no one is immuneAddiction isn't always obvious. Ian breaks down how even the most successful people can fall into patterns of overwork, people-pleasing, or constantly chasing success. Learn how to identify these hidden habits and take the first step toward breaking free.2.) The growing grip of technology addiction—on us and our kidsFrom endless scrolling to digital distractions, technology has quietly become one of the most pervasive addictions. Ian shares insights into how it affects not just adults but our children, and how to reclaim our focus and connection in a hyper-digital world.3.) A fresh, practical take on the 12-Steps for everyoneIan modernizes the timeless principles of the 12 Steps for recovery, making them accessible for anyone—not just those battling substance abuse. Discover how these steps can help you build healthier boundaries, reconnect with what matters, and create lasting change in your life.SHOW NOTEShttps://bradleyjohnson.com/91PRE-ORDER YOUR COPY OF "THE FIX" Go grab a copy of Ian's book, The Fix: How the Twelve Steps Offer a Surprising Path of Transformation For the Well-adjusted, the Down-and-Out, and Everyone in Between. Financial advising is a trust-based business, and clients need to feel confident in your ability to manage their finances. That's why what you wear matters. How you dress and present yourself shapes how prospects and clients perceive you. It says a lot about your personality, the quality of your work, your attention to detail, and so much more. Not only that, but first impressions stick. Before you even say a word, potential clients are sizing you up based on your appearance, so it's critical to know what to wear – and what NOT to wear! That's why I wanted to bring Bentley on the show. He's an expert at helping entrepreneurs take their image and confidence to the next level. In fact, he's Michael Hyatt's stylist – and if you know Michael, you know that's saying a lot. Dressing nice may seem obvious, but knowing what to wear, how to wear it, and where to buy it, can quickly become overwhelming. In this episode, we dive deep into the intentional details that make a lasting impression with clients, actionable steps to elevate your wardrobe, and some of Bentley's best advice for developing an authentic style that you can wear with confidence. 3 of the biggest insights from Bentley Caldwell …The psychology behind dressing for success and how elevating your wardrobe can boost your confidence and make you more relatable to high-end clientsWhy sticking to timeless, professional styles is more impactful than chasing fleeting trends – and simple style hacks that every advisor can useThe power of discovering your personal style and why spending on quality pieces that fit well is a long-term investment in your personal and professional success.GIFT FROM THIS EPISODE + JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWToday's Gift: Get 10% Off of Bentley's Standard Styling PackageTo get access to today's free gift AND become a DBDL Insider with VIP access to future resources and exclusive content, text "79" to 785-800-3235. *Message and data rates may apply.
