On Halloween of 1828, a woman by the name of Mary Docherty was killed and stuffed under the bed of William Burke. Mary was the last of many people to be ‘burked' - a sick and cruel practice that involved killing people, giving their body to local doctors for medical exploration, and earning rich payment in return. "I Know Where I Am Going with the minisode The Resurrectionist" has us spending (too much?) time discussing the history of resurrectionists, Mrs. Sandwich's occupation, the myth of the meritocracy, and Social Darwinism. Rebecca takes umbrage with Crowley's ideas about gravity and puts her tinfoil hat on, while Tori laments Aziraphale's actions and Gabriel's purple eyes.My best games of chess, 1908-1937 : Alexander AlekhineResurrectionists in the United Kingdom - WikipediaBody Snatching - UK Parliament
It is 1828 and medical science is advancing fast, but the best way to learn about anatomy is to see it in the flesh. That's where the Resurrectionists come in. Burke and Hare can get you a steady supply of bodies... as long as you never ask where they come from. Don't forget to rate us ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and check out our social media here. In 18th- and 19th-century England, doctors employed grave robbers - or "resurrectionists" - to unearth bodies for anatomical research. Unwilling to wait for bodies to present themselves via natural causes, William Burke and William Hare took their own dark and illegal twist on the job. In today's episode, we explore how the grave robbers' role shifted from exhuming bodies after death to obtaining them through premeditated murder. "Crimes of the Centuries" is a podcast from the Obsessed Network exploring forgotten crimes from times past that made a mark and helped change history. Interview with Joe Cannon of Resurrectionists Resurrectionists were originally formed by lyricist, guitarist, and banjo picker Joe Cannon and bassist Jeff Brueggeman from the locally revered trio WORK with drummer Josh Barto and pedal steel player Gavin Hardy. On the group's 2019 debut album What Comes In -- a collection of everyman trouble tales delivered with dark wit and piquant Midwestern tang -- Gavin's mournful, swelling steel work helped steer songs into Gothic-country territory. On Now That We Are All Ghosts, Hardy has been replaced by multi-instrumentalist Gian Pogliano. Gian's penchant for more adventurous, wider-ranging sonic discourse inspires Resurrectionists to branch out into unexpected stylistic experimentation. The material here is informed equally by the meticulous melodic abstractions of pre-punk icons on Television as the Old Weird American sounds of Dock Boggs and Bascom Lamar Lunsford. Today's guest makes me want to read more dictionaries; but old, slang ones. He's Joe Cannon from Resurrectionists. Joe comes from a family that isn't exactly musically inclined, although his dad DID play a mean steering wheel. Joe didn't start pursuing music seriously until he went to Notre Dame in South Bend. At that point he REALLY got into it. He not only played music, but also got national touring acts to come to South Bend to play with his band in their basement. Music was such a force in him that it caused him to delay his work on a PhD at Northwestern. And what's really weird is his reading of German writer Thomas Mann inspired pandemic themed lyrics that were written in 2019! It's kinda spooky. He's a self taught banjo player, a collector of slang dictionaries, tambourine enthusiast, and creator of his own, occasional film festival. That last part is because he decided that Resurrectionists would make a video for all 9 tracks on the new album, Now That We Are All Ghosts. Go to reurrectionistsMKE on YouTube to check out all the videos. Follow the band on Facebook and Instagram. Grab the album from Bandcamp. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on Twitter & Instagram. We accept money for coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. We humbly offer merch with our cute little logo at performanceanx.threadless.com. Finally, the read along we've been promising! We're so excited to talk about Tracy MacNish's Stealing Midnight, a gothic romance from 2008 that delivers what we here at the pod like to refer to as “the full banana.” We talk about bodysnatchers, about science, about dukes in disguise, about twins, and about why historical romance is unmatched. If you know Tracy MacNish, please tell her we love her book, and we'd really appreciate it if she'd right that second one. Thank you, as always, for listening! Please follow us on your favorite podcasting app, and if you are up for leaving a rating or review there, we would be very grateful.Show NotesLet the New York Public Library explain the history of gothic romance to you.Perhaps you want to know a little bit more about Resurrectionists and grave robbers. Most bodysnatchers were working for people who were learning about human anatomy.I guess you could watch The Banshees of Inisherin if you want to learn to correctly pronounce the name Padraig.Should you tell your twins their birth order?Talking about foils is some real English teacher business.Sir Gawain was one of King Arthur's knightsSpanish fly is a real thing, and probably best to stay away from it.

Sometimes referred to as body snatchers, resurrection men stole corpses from their graves and then sold them to physicians, universities, and scientists in an effort to advance medicine in the 19th century, but mostly for financial gain. Welcome Katelyn Monroe Howes to chat about her new book The Awoken, literally experiencing death, cryogenics, shifting moralities, and two films that inspired it: 12 Monkeys and Children of Men. Also a 15 year+ long secret is revealed that could be friendship breaking, plus wine stemware? More about The Awoken: When Alabine Rivers, a politically active young woman with a bright career and romance ahead of her, finds out the devastating news that she has terminal cancer, the only thing that gives her solace is the possibility of a second life through the emerging field of cryogenics. A century later, scientists have indeed discovered how to bring back the dead from preservation, but humanity has been locked in a philosophical battle over the ethics of this new Godlike power, a battle that has turned violent: those who are resurrected, the Awoken, have been declared illegal and are to be shot on sight. This is the world Alabine is brought into by the Resurrectionists, an underground militia fighting for the rights of the Awoken. Finding herself in a completely unfamiliar world, and one where she is an outsider for the first time in her life, Alabine must figure out how to survive and determine her place in this new world, all the while being haunted by lucid memories of her previous life and the man she loved. More about Katelyn Monroe Howes: She is an LA based award-winning writer and Emmy-nominated documentarian. An Atlanta native and alum of NYU, Katelyn co-founded 1/27 PICTURES, a documentary production company. What's in a name? Quite a bit actually. Names and titles can be all that's needed to make some one a hero or a villain. So we're looking at some villains who never got their proper title. People who were able to hide behind social standing and wealth to excuse their crimes.
In this episode, I speak with playwright Steven Young to discuss the anatomy of a monologue, scene, 10 minute play, one-act play, three-act play and even touch on the more uncommon four-act structure. We also discuss the necessities of a scene and where to start them. We also discuss achieving production feats in playwriting, beginners' mistakes, good and bad writing habits and building a routine as well as what makes a good story, and whether or not you can teach subtext. This is an episode oozing with information and knowledge. Steven Young is an actor, director, and playwright. His full-length plays include The King's Face, The Night We Bombed Lincoln Towing, The Soothsayer, The Wal*Martians, The Resurrectionists, Cheddar Heads, The Night Witches, and Obscenity. Resurrectionist William Cunningham was actively stealing bodies from grave sites around Cincinnati from 1855 to 1871. He was well known, and he was something of a legend. He once returned to the same gravesite at which he had earlier been caught digging – after he'd bought those who had detained him a drink. He dressed the bodies he stole. And, he had a “villainous bald head.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Body snatching is the act of literally snatching a corpse-- yikes. In today's episode the THRE3 of us go way back in time to talk about it's history, and how it became a crime. Did you know there are modern day versions of filching corpses? Tune in to hear some dark stories.
In season 6 of Criminalia, you can expect to hear about those who dug up the dead for cash. Grave robbers dug up graves to steal valuable items that had been buried with the deceased. As did tomb raiders. They were known to take everything but the body. Body snatchers and resurrectionists, though, stole bodies from graves. The first recorded case of body snatching is attributed to four medical students in Bologna, Italy, in 1319 -- and we'll start there, to find out why. If you have not yet seen Sister Thea Bowman's 1989 address to the U.S. bishops, pause whatever you're doing and go watch it. And for any newly ordained U.S. bishop, this should be required viewing. That's the conviction of Manuel Williams, C.R., a Resurrectionist priest, the pastor of Resurrection Catholic Church in Montgomery, Ala., and professor of Black Catholic spirituality. Father Williams joins “The Gloria Purvis Podcast” to celebrate the tour de force who was his friend and mentor, Thea Bowman, F.S.P.A., who is now on the path to beatification and canonization. They discuss the importance of a distinctly Black spirituality, including song, preaching, art, worship and prayer in Catholic parishes and communities. Father Williams explains what anti-racist preaching means and why it matters at church. “We have to acknowledge that the experience of Africanness that our ancestors brought to this country, the experience of the middle passage, the experience of enslavement, the experience of Jim Crow, the experience of the great migration, the experience now of voter oppression and renewed rancid racism—all of that affects the way I prayed to my Jesus,” Father Williams says, “and to deny that is nonsense.” According to Father Williams, it is not the case that white spirituality doesn't exist or have a home in the church but rather that the default spirituality has been white and has been assumed to be normative for everyone else. Anti-racist preaching and the full inclusion of Black spirituality takes seriously the mystery of the Incarnation, through which, Father Williams says, “every culture, every manifestation, every expression of humanity is honored, is glorified, is affirmed.” Father Williams adds that while the Incarnation affirms every culture, Jesus' becoming human still takes place “in a concrete place, in a concrete time, in a concrete culture.” And therefore, we celebrate the Black experience as part of the concreteness of the Incarnation. Gloria and Father Williams also talk about how Black Catholics can sustain themselves spiritually when their local parish does not draw from the cultural richness of the African American experience. In this episode Christi and Mindy talk about grave robbers! Topics discussed include: cultural norms surrounding dead bodies and cadaver dissections; resurrectionists – who they were and what motivated them to snatch bodies; how the American Revolutionary War influenced cadaver dissection; the very long history of the exploitation of criminals and minority groups for dissection; how bodies were actually removed from fresh graves; the extreme measures taken to prevent body snatching; and the “Doctors' Riot” in 1788.
To continue our spooky and macabre month of October, this week Philip tells the history of Resurrectionists (body snatchers) who sold bodies for dissection purposes and probably the most famous body sellers, Burke and Hare. Alien Worlds was a science fiction/adventure omnibus—an anthology with the same characters set in the same universe, as opposed to an anthology of completely unrelated stories. The series was independently created, produced, and directed by Lee Hansen from 1979 to 1980. He produced 30 episodes covering 19 individual plotlines. Episodes were in standard 30-minute format, but story arcs were as long as 90 minutes. It's the mid-21st century and the International Space Authority (ISA) is the body which governs space exploration and development. Alien Worlds follows the adventures of ISA staff as they encounter strange cosmic mysteries. Some episodes take place aboard Starlab, an orbiting space station, while other episodes take place throughout the galaxy. All of the episodes are full of action. The series was written by Lee Hansen and Ron Thompson, with various co-writers, including Ken Ross, Jim Cook, Skip Press, Dudley Brown, Mike Hodel, and Babylon 5 writer J. Michael Stracynski. The full-symphonic soundtrack was written by Jim Kirk and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.
