Enchanted Ears Podcast: Anything & Everything Disney

Hello and welcome to the Enchanted Ears Podcast, where we discuss anything and everything Disney. Universal Studios finally announced all of the lands in Epic Universe and we question what the reception will be like once the park opens. We love Walt Disney, and his name is synonymous with the Disney parks, movies, and company as a whole. But, today, we want to take a step back and pay some respects to one of the other, lesser known, Disney brothers: Roy O. Disney. Roy, ever his brother's companion and in many ways, his other half, doesn't always come up in the conversation. However, without Roy, there is some question as to whether Walt would've had the great success he did. So who was Roy Disney? And what did he do to make Walt's dream become a reality? Listen in and you'll see just why Roy deserves a little more credit than he often gets. And don't forget to send us those Sea Shanties   Submit a question/topic for us to discuss on a future episode.

More than 27 hours of vintage sci-fi for only $9.99 now on Spotify. He was told he had no talent by a creative-writing professor at Ohio State University and then he went on to become one of the most prolific science fiction writers of all time having written more than 1700 short stories and articles, at least 100 books and dozens of screenplays and television scripts.Born in Cleveland Ohio in 1934 Harlan Ellison wrote what is regarded by many as the best episode of Star Trek, "The City on the Edge of Forever" and he hated it, because it was rewritten. It won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Episodic Drama on Television. At the Hugos he dedicated the award to “the memory of the script they butchered, and in respect to those parts of it that had the vitality to shine through the evisceration.”Ellison sold scripts to a lot of TV shows in the 60s, The Flying Nun, Burke's Law, Route 66,The Outer Limits,The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Cimarron Strip, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.A word used frequently to describe Ellison was cantankerous. He was hired as a writer for Walt Disney Studios, but was fired on his first day after Roy O. Disney overheard him in the studio commissary joking about making a pornographic animated film featuring Disney characters.Ellison settled out of court over allegations that James Cameron had plagiarized elements of his work in writing the screenplay for The Terminator; and he once sent a dead gopher to a publisher who violated a clause in his contract. And then there was the time in the 60s he was nose to nose in an argument with Frank Sinatra which nearly led to physical blows. The altercation, which started when the always impeccably dressed Sinatra didn't like the boots Ellison was wearing, was short, lasting only about 3 minutes before Ellison walked away. In 2013 Ellison admitted he kept the boots preserved in a plastic bag in his closet.Harlan Ellison was cantankerous; he was talented, and he wrote more than science fiction. He won 8 Hugo Awards, four Nebula Awards, two Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America and 5 Bram Stoker Awards from the Horror Writers Association.A writer for more than 60 years Harlan Ellison died at his home in Los Angeles in 2018 at the age of 84.From the February 1956 edition of Infinity Science Fiction, Glow Worm by Harlan Ellison… Next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast… From Chaos a space-consuming creature reachedslimy tentacles toward trembling planets. Disney and grandniece of Walt Disney. The woman who is perhaps the single biggest thorn in the side of Disney's two Bobs – former CEO Bob Iger and current CEO Bob Chapek – has been at it again, eviscerating the mega-conglomerate and its “botched” response to Florida's so-called “Don't Say Gay” law.Disney, who recently wrote an op-ed on the subject for The Washington Post, weighs in on why she won't sit by idly on the sidelines. “The bear needed poking,” she tells The Ankler Hot Seat. “[Chapek's] response was so flatfooted and ill-considered. The first round of response was, ‘Oops. Well, we're neutral anyway. So don't yell at us.'” First of all, you're not neutral if you're giving money to those particular politicians. I know about their records. Nobody who gives them money should be surprised at all by their stance on this issue. There is no neutral. The right-wing in the case of transgender and LGBTQ people have been coming for their very existence for a long time now.”She says Disney's leadership that well pre-dates Chapek often backs right-wing politicians in its shameless pursuit of profits. “Politicians in general have always benefited by the largesse of Disney in California and Florida and federally as well. But they lean Republican in who they support because Republicans, generally speaking, and politicians on the right are more supportive of what is generally called a pro-business agenda, which means lower taxes, less regulation and more autonomy for companies,” the heiress says. “So, I don't think Disney was necessarily thinking about [Florida State Sen. Dennis Baxley's] record when they gave him money. They were thinking about his record on business.”Disney also talked about the mindset behind directing the Sundance documentary The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales, about “America's dysfunctional and unequal economy” focusing on her family's story as a prism to view systemic problems. The project began in 2018, and it rankled corporate brass. (“I had a film crew with me when I went to testify [before Congress]. I know there was a Disney lobbyist there trying to prevent me from testifying,” she recalls. She recounts how she reached out to then-CEO Iger about her concerns about the company's drift towards inequity only to have her emails go unreturned. “It started before I started the film when I wrote a long email to him about my concerns. And of course, my concerns are not the concerns of a person who went to business school. But I think that's partly why they need to be heard. Right? His response to me was really actually dismissive and tiny bit insulting. I wrote him a second time and then I just never heard from him again.”Finally, in this podcast she challenges Disney to put a rank-and-file worker on the board to represent employee interests. “I don't know why boards are always filled with managers when the lion's share of workers are [low-level] workers. Their interests should be represented at the board level.” Instead, the company's top tier, particularly Iger, accumulated fabulous wealth on the backs of those workers (Iger and Chapek's comp packages were reported at $45.9 million and $32 million respectively in 2021). “Bob Iger never took a risk in his life,” she notes. “He took risks by purchasing other companies, but was he ever in danger of losing his house. Never. So to get rewarded that way [and] having never taken that kind of risk, it feels wrong.”Representatives for the Disney Corporation did not respond to requests for comment. Please just us next week for more episodes of Ankler Hot Seat, and remember to follow us (and like us!) at Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to your podcasts. If you're not already a paying subscriber, we invite you to join our community and never miss another podcast or story again, New on The Ankler:Will NFT's save Hollywood? At the time of his death, he held more than 16 million shares (about 1% of the company), and served as a consultant for the company, as director emeritus for the board of directors.* As the last member of the Disney family to be actively involved in the company, Disney was often compared to his uncle and father. But there were two little-known, but important decisions that were made by Roy in the wake of the Florida opening, just weeks later. They would create great consequences for the organization moving forward over the years to come. On this, the 50th anniversary of Roy O. Disney's passing, we will look at those two decisions that came within two months after the park's opening, and consider what we can learn about decision making in our own individual worlds.

The title may seem confusing, after all, there is barely a Disney fan that doesn't know that Walt Disney World opened its doors to its first paid guests on October 1st, 1971. And the official dedication weekend was October 23rd, 24th and 25th, with the last day being the moment Roy O. Disney would dedicate the park. But there's another park opening story, and it's about the first day that families actually came into the Magic Kingdom with available attractions, restaurants and stores all running. That story we will share with you on this the 50th anniversary day of when it opened. It's a great story, and it has implications for any organization. Join us on Midnight Movie Nerds with Naomi Chusid and Luis Lacau as this week we explore the amazing filmography of Disney Animated FilmsWalt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS), sometimes shortened to Disney Animation, is an American animation studio that creates animated features and short films for The Walt Disney Company. Founded on October 16, 1923 by brothers Walt Disney and Roy O. Disney, it is one of the oldest-running animation studios in the world and currently acts as a division of Walt Disney Studios, being headquartered at the Roy E. Disney Animation Building at the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, California. Since its foundation, the studio has produced 58 feature films, from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) to Frozen II (2019), and hundreds of short films.Founded as Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio in 1923, renamed Walt Disney Studio in 1926 and incorporated as Walt Disney Productions in 1929, the studio was exclusively dedicated to producing short films until it expanded into feature production in 1934, resulting in 1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, one of the first full-length animated feature films and the first one made in the United States. In 1986, during a large corporate restructuring, Walt Disney Productions, which had grown from a single animation studio into an international multimedia company, was renamed The Walt Disney Company and the animation studio Walt Disney Feature Animation in order to differentiate it from the other divisions. Its current name was adopted in 2007 after Pixar Animation Studios was acquired by Disney in the previous year. For much of its existence, the studio was recognized as the premier American animation studio;it developed many of the techniques, concepts and principles that became standard practices of traditional animation. The studio also pioneered the art of storyboarding, which is now a standard technique used in both animated and live-action filmmaking. The studio's catalog of animated features is among Disney's most notable assets, with the stars of its animated shorts – Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy and Pluto – becoming recognizable figures in popular culture and mascots for The Walt Disney Company as a whole.#webiteretro #billywilder #theapartment #jacklemmon #shirleymaclaine #classicfilm #geek #fandom #Manbitesmedia #Luislacau #naomiChusid #moviereviews #classicfilms #robinwilliams #Liveonbroadway #Genie

Bedknobs and Broomsticks is a 1971 American musical fantasy film directed by Robert Stevenson, produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by Buena Vista Distribution Company in North America on December 13, 1971. It is based upon the books The Magic Bedknob; or, How to Become a Witch in Ten Easy Lessons (1943) and Bonfires and Broomsticks (1947) by English children's author Mary Norton. The film, which combines live-action and animation, stars Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson. During the early 1960s, Bedknobs and Broomsticks entered development when the negotiations for the film rights to Mary Poppins (1964) were placed on hold. When the rights were acquired, the film was shelved repeatedly due to the similarities with Mary Poppins until it was revived in 1969. Originally at a length of 139 minutes, Bedknobs and Broomsticks was edited down to almost two hours prior to its premiere at the Radio City Music Hall. The film was released on December 13, 1971, to mixed reviews from critics, some of whom praised the live-action/animated sequence. The film received five Academy Awards nominations winning one for Best Special Visual Effects. This was the last film released prior to the death of Walt Disney's surviving brother, Roy O. Disney, who died one week later. It is also the last theatrical film Reginald Owen appeared in before his death in 1972; his last two acting credits were for television. In 2001 the film was restored with most of the deleted material re-inserted back into the film. A stage musical adaptation is in production which is set to debut in 2020. www.
