In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, we're joined by Patrice and Justin La Vigne. Over the past decade-plus, Patrice and Justin have traded their corporate grind for, in their words, “a life less ordinary.” From their first thru-hike of the AT in 2011 (drink), to managing a hostel, embarking on multiple van tours to spread the thru-hiking gospel, thru-hiking the TA in New Zealand, and now living in a 300-square-foot cabin on the outskirts of Denali National Park in Alaska—they've done it all. We dive into how they restructured their lives around adventure, what it's really like living in a tiny cabin in remote Alaska, why moose are jerks, the challenges of thru-hiking with Crohn's, and much more. We wrap the show with the story of a man accused of staging a bear attack to cover up a murder, what the funniest sounding fart is (and introducing Chaunce to the world of covering your farts), and the triple crown of New Year's Resolutions. Guest: Jason Kilar, former CEO & co-founder of Hulu and former CEO of WarnerMediaWhen Jason Kilar was a child, he was obsessed with Walt Disney — not just as a filmmaker or the creator of Disneyland, but as an entrepreneur. He started his career at the Walt Disney Company (where else?) but then got his first opportunity to help build something new when a young startup entrepreneur from Seattle visited his business school classroom. Most of Jason's classmates predicted the failure of this startup, Amazon.com, which elicited “this awesome laugh, the Jeff Bezos trademark laugh.” How a leader reacts to criticism or doubts, Jason learned, says a lot about their conviction and intelligence.Chapters:(01:08) - Bing Gordon and John Doerr (04:11) - Warner Bros. By 1970, Disneyland was not just a unique theme park business, but a well running piece of machinery. But now they had to replicate that kind of thinking to a larger stage as they opened up Walt Disney World. To better prepare for that, they had to educate everyone on how Disneyland worked. To that end, Van France, who originally created along with Dick Nunis the Disney University, wrote Art and Management of the Theme Show. This document, written originally in 1970 and then updated three years later, provides us a snippet in how the organization was ran during that time--a time that included no Big Thunder or Space Mountain, no Mickey's Toontown, no Star Wars Galaxy's Edge, no Indiana Jones Adventure, no adjoining Disney California Adventure, and not even hotels. It was just Disneyland with a parking lot in front. Still, we cover the fascinating insights that are gleaned from this document, as a way of understanding the organizational approach Disney used to create "The Happiest Place on Earth". Join us on our 493rd podcast for Disney's Art and Management of the Theme Show. ________________________________________________ My new book, A Century of Powerful Disney Insights, Volume I 1923-1973, The Walt & Roy Disney Years is available! “I came that you might have life in ALL of its Abundance.” - John 10:10 Volunteers and student leaders… train them and educate them regularly on what is expected and consistently remind them of God's vision through you for themselves and your student ministry. During my time as a student minister, we would take our volunteer staff to various trainings hosted by student focuses groups (YPS, SLU, YFC, FCA etc.) and a few weeks before the school year would start, we would have one weekend for training at a special location (beach, mountains, etc.) with our volunteers and their families. That was the best, but one year I decided to change it up! At that time you could park at any of the Disney World hotels for free and and hold impromptu sessions in the lobby or on the outside of the property. I loved the Animal Kingdom Lodge, with the outdoor fire pits, rocking chairs, all while being surrounded by wild African animals roaming the zoo like setting onsite. If you knew someone working there, in upper management, you could even get a special room set up in the lobby or a special meeting room. Larry Stephens With CRU (episode 140 on the Youth Worker On Fire Podcast), came to train our volunteer staff and it was beyond amazing! Another time we used Disney University, because of Don Levonious (episode 06 on the Youth Worker On Fire Podcast). He was the Executive who was in charge of the University (yes it is an actual University). Several of his staff were Christians who were Professors at the University of Central Florida, UCF, and Valencia State College. They and Don became the trainers for our volunteer training weekend. Yes, living near Disney World and the ocean has its perks. However… wherever you live has its perks also! You just have to be willing to interact with your community, pay it forward, and the world around you that God is using will open up. _______________________________ Looking for a new student ministry resource? Businesses are quickly advancing with technology, which means customer loyalty remains a critical pillar for success. A recent study indicated that the cost of attracting a new customer is five times more than retaining an existing one. While the healthcare sector is a necessity of life, it, too, is a business that has to attract and keep its customers. So, how can the healthcare industry foster the kind of allegiance where customers would metaphorically "walk-through-fire " for them? What secrets lie behind achieving unparalleled customer loyalty in today's fast-paced world? On the latest "I Don't Care with Kevin Stevenson” episode, host Kevin Stevenson examined this compelling topic with the President of Snow & Associates, Dennis Snow. Together, they explored Snow's journey from Disney World to shaping world-class customer service models across different industries, and his method of walk-through-fire.A few highlights from their discussion included:Snow's involvement in customer service from a summer job as Captain Nemo at Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride, to managing the Disney University. The parallels between the hospitality provided at Disney and in the healthcare sector, and both being emotionally charged domainsTips for clinicians and professionals on fostering meaningful patient and customer interactions, focusing on active listening and human connections.Dennis Snow has a rich background spanning two decades with Disney World, transitioning from entertainment to managing various operational areas and training initiatives. As a customer service expert, keynote speaker, and author, Snow has dedicated his life to helping organizations develop fierce customer loyalty.

When the pandemic caused Walt Disney World to shutdown and furlough cast members, they came together and created a facebook group Ear for Eachother. We had the opportunity to speak with four members of the Facebook group who built businesses during this time. Here are their stories. Claire created a business out of ideas she wished that Disney was able to offer! She uses her cosmetology license to help her clients Disney bound in their own fairytale. Kellyann creates door decorations, delivers baskets, and in room celebrations. Prior to the shutdown, Kelly was a cast member at Ohana and coordinator for Disney University and uses her experience with Disney to infuse magic into all of her creations. Justin was a Jedi with the Jedi Training Academy prior to the shutdowns. In addition to his experience as a Jedi, Justin played baseball professionally. When the shutdown began, Justin offered baseball lessons in the Ear for Eachother Group and ended up with requests for Jedi lessons instead. Within 48 hours, he was booked up for the next 3 months! Suhi specializes in charcuterie boxes, edible party favors, and other beautiful food items. Her business was Suhi's way to combine her experience in the food and beverage industry with her passion for food - and especially cheese - to fill a need for Disney guests. The Mouse Castle Lounge Podcast: Disney News and Interviews, Cocktails and Conversations
The Summer 1967 issue of "Disney News" magazine contained an article entitled, “University of Disneyland: An Institution of Smiles.” The story told of the park's in-house training of more than 5,000 cast members each year, cast members who were taught to “welcome each guest with a smile that's sincere” and ensure every new employee became a “people specialist” before he or she actually set foot on the job. This progressive, people-centric approach to training was the brainchild of Van Arsdale France, who joined Disney in March 1955, just months before Disneyland's grand opening. With the support and encouragement of Walt Disney, Van France created the University of Disneyland, which would soon become the gold standard of employee training programs. Over the decades, the program would evolve into what is now called Disney University and to this day it takes its cues from the principles and standards France developed 60 years ago. Doug Lipp was hired by Disney in the late 1970s and would later work with and be mentored by Van France. Fluent in Japanese, Doug was part of the start-up team at Tokyo Disneyland in preparation of the resort's grand opening in 1983.
