We're back with another uplifting tale for you dear listeners! Just kidding. While Rubin "Hurricane" Carter did quite a few bad things in his life, he also did some dope stuff. But none of that matters because his life got shoved pretty far off the rails and out of his control, and it didn't go great. Sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel is just a train about to run your ass over. Or maybe it's a happy ending. Only way to find out is to listen to the episode. Enjoy!
Using AI to narrate an article I wrote about a decade ago about meeting “The Hurricane”: Dr Rubin “Hurricane” Carter. The recall also helped to summary remember my initial years in Canada as an Immigrant. ----------+ The first time Rubin “Hurricane” Carter crossed my radar was back in the year 2000. It was during one of my channel surfing finger exercises, when I came upon the Golden Globes awards, where actor Denzel Washington was accepting an award for Best Actor. I was just in time to see Denzel Washington, standing on the podium and acknowledging the real life person he had portrayed, who had served almost 20 years of a life sentence for a triple murder he was never justly proven guilty of committing.
In this compelling episode, we delve into the riveting story of "The Hurricane," a biographical film that takes us on a gripping journey through the life of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter. This episode explores the film's portrayal of injustice, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of a man determined to reclaim his life. Join Sharmanique as she dissects Denzel Washington's powerful performance as Rubin Carter, a promising boxer wrongfully convicted of murder in the 1960s. We unravel the intricacies of his legal battle, marked by racial prejudice and a flawed justice system. As the Hurricane fights for his freedom from behind bars, his unwavering spirit and the dedication of a young Canadian boy become beacons of hope in the darkest of times. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/catchthesevibes/message

Personal Power is our ability to adapt, effectively, to the change in our life. It's our ability to persist in the face of challenges, maintain steady self-belief, and with confidence, meet each new day ready to realise our full potential. I believe that whenever we take on big, intimidating goals, we flex our personal power and it is what wakes us up to the possibilities available to us. A deep sense of personal power is the only thing that will allow you to notice and actually reach for the possibilities, and the more power you believe you have, the more awake and aware you're to the possibilities in life. In this episode, I talk how and why we must keep alive our sense of personal power. If you feel limited by your circumstances, how inner power can help you overcome those restrictions and win despite the odds stacked against you. I share examples of people with lives that embody the value of personal power. Are there some words which should never be broadcast, even if they are used by Bob Dylan in one of his songs? BBC Radio 6 Music has edited the use of the n-word from his 1976 anti-racist song Hurricane, about the imprisonment of boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter. In Feedback this week, Sir Trevor Phillips and Marverine Cole give contrasting views about the use of this most offensive of words, particularly in music. For some people, attempts made to rise above the hand they've been dealt are met with success. Welcome back to the Bill Bradley Collective, where today we present the second episode of this special double-drop week, centered around the life and impact of late American-Canadian middleweight contender, Rubin “Hurricane” Carter. The theme for this season is criminal justice and sports, and as Carter's boxing career was cut short by a 20-year imprisonment following a wrongful conviction for murder in 1967, his story is well-fit for this season's profile feature. The circumstances of Carter's troubled early life set the table, as he bounces from juvenile detention to the U.S. Army to prison in his native New Jersey for assault. It is in the Army where Carter discovers boxing, and following his release from prison Carter turns professional and works his way up to a world-class level in the middleweight division. Not five years removed from prison, Carter finds himself and a late night triple homicide occurs in a Paterson, New Jersey bar and Carter finds himself and acquaintance John Artis as the principle suspects. The only “crimes” Carter commits that night are those of being black and perhaps in the wrong place at the wrong time, but that does not stop an all-white jury of convicting he and Artis of the three murders. A 1976 re-trial inexplicably finds Carter convicted for a second time, and it is not until 1985 following a petition of habeas corpus in federal court that Carter is finally freed. Carter's life and case famously gain the attention of Bob Dylan, as his 1975 song “Hurricane” asserts the singer's belief in Carter's innocence. A well-received 1999 biopic featuring Denzel Washington as Carter, “The Hurricane,” depicts Carter's trials, time in prison and eventual release. His is a complicated life. A life marked by violence, criminally as a youth and professionally by later occupation, gives way to a legacy as a foremost face of victimhood perpetrated by the ills of our criminal justice system. It's a story, broadly, about the black American experience, but just as important is that somehow, over fifty years removed from Carter's wrongful conviction, the circumstances of his life have never been more relevant to the discourse on criminal justice reform in this country.

One of the great gifts of curiosity is that it takes you places you can’t foresee. That was the case for Elin and me July 4th when we slid over to downtown Ypsilanti to see the 2nd Annual Black Empowerment Awards. We were not feeling the patriotism associated with the national holiday with the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor by police and Ahmaud Arbery by white men who chased him down in their truck, and then the protests and rioting all over the country and the teargassing of peaceful protestors in Washington D.C. so that President Trump could hold a bible in front of a church for a photo op. When it was his turn, Hakim Crampton wove a tapestry of poverty, violence and a community forced into a corner by racism. His mom had pimped for his dad in Detroit and he became involved in drug culture in the sixth grade as a way to earn money and respect and this led to a life on the streets, hustling to earn money and sell drugs and deal with an awful lot of violence.Hakim freely admits he was no angel. In and out of juvenile detention and jail growing up, he carried weapons, stole, slept in crackhouses, shot people and was shot, and got in fights—all in the pretext of surviving. in 1992, at age 18, he and his best friend were convicted of a murder the previous year by all accounts he had nothing to do with. The confession a step brother gave to police after four days of relentless questioning implicating Hakim—a confession he later recanted—that led to Hakim’s conviction and time in prison in Wisconsin. This part of Hakim’s story is very similar to the murder convictions of five young black men in New York city in 1989, known as the Central Park jogger case, who were all totally exonerated after spending years in prison. Hakim spent 14 1/2 years in prison before being paroled. But his story doesn’t end there. Our conversation moves to his life where he understood he was on the wrong trajectory, to his rediscovery of poetry to his work advocating for and guiding young black men as a part of Just Leadership USA. This might be uncomfortable for some. I have to admit this conversation made me question my own ideas of racism and a naive sense I’ve carried that not being racist is enough. This is a little longer interview and I didn’t get to all my questions for Hakim so I don’t know if I’ve done he and his story justice. I hope you find something valuable in this conversation with Hakim Nathaniel Crampton.Innocence Project/Canada: https://innocencecanada.com/Rubin Hurricane Carter's story: https://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/21/sports/rubin-hurricane-carter-fearsome-boxer-dies-at-76.htmlClean Slate Program:https://detroitmi.gov/departments/law-department/project-clean-slate
We find ourselves in the Eye of the Hurricane. The mass anti-racist protests in the US and in countries around the world, following the death of George Floyd have been largely directed at policing, as a root cause of systemic racism, but will defunding the police, or making them more accountable really produce the outcome we are looking for? …. or do we need to look deeper? My guest for this episode of for What it's Worth is Ken Klonsky, author, educator and Director of Innocence International, an organization founded by the late Rubin “Hurricane” Carter. Innocence International is dedicated to overturning wrongful conviction, brought about by false confessions orchestrated by law enforcement and supported by representatives of the criminal justice system…join us, Eye of the Hurricane…. As part of the brand-new podcast series Yellow, Gabriel Radus talks to BBC 5 Live Presenter Steve Crossman about growing up in the North-East of England, his career in broadcasting, and his investigative work that transformed the optics surrounding the story of Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter, the boxer who was falsely accused and imprisoned for a triple homicide that highlighted implicit racial discrimination in 1960’s America.

For ten years before Rubin “Hurricane” Carter’s death, he and his friend and coauthor Ken Klonsky had been working to help free another wrongfully convicted man, David McCallum. McCallum was eventually exonerated and freed after serving twenty-nine years in prison. This is the story of how Carter and Klonsky, along with a group of committed friends and professionals, managed to secure McCallum’s release. It details their many struggles, from founding an innocence project to take on the case, finding lawyers willing to work pro bono, and hiring a private detective to sift through old evidence and locate original witnesses, to the most difficult part: convincing members of a deeply flawed criminal justice system to reopen a case that would expose their own mistakes when all they wanted to do was ignore the conflicting evidence. A new district attorney willing to reexamine the case, a documentary film, and an op-ed piece in which Carter, on his deathbed, made a plea for McCallum’s release finally turned the tide of justice.
