LAUNCH CONTROL: Main engine start, six engines up and running. And lift-off! Lift-off of the Proton rocket and the Zarya control module. The International Space Station is under way. The International Space Station was born 25 years ago today. The first piece of the station was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. It was built and launched by Russia, but paid for by the United States. For years, it provided control, crew quarters, and storage. Today, it's mainly a storage locker. Zarya is a Russian word for “sunrise.” The module was based on the design of the first series of Russian space stations, called Salyut. It's a steel can more than 40 feet long. It weighed more than 20 tons at launch, plus several tons of propellants. It wasn't alone for long. Space shuttle Endeavour delivered the second module, known as Unity, a couple of weeks later. Astronauts used a robotic arm to attach the two pieces. It took a couple of years for the station to really start to take shape, though. Today, it consists of dozens of major pieces. In all, they span more than the length of a football field, with a total mass of almost a million pounds. But it all started with a single large can, delivered to orbit 25 years ago today.LAUNCH CONTROL: 30 seconds into the flight, good first-stage performance. The Proton delivering 1.9 million pounds of thrust from its six engines. ... Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

This week, Editor-in-Chief Elliot Williams and Kristina Panos have much in the way of Hackaday news -- the Op Amp Challenge is about halfway over, and there are roughly three weeks left in the Assistive Tech challenge of the 2023 Hackaday Prize. Show us what you've got on the analog front, and then see what you can do to help people with disabilities to live better lives! Kristina is still striking out on What's That Sound, which this week honestly sounded much more horrendous and mechanical than the thing it actually is. Then it's on to the hacks, beginning with the we-told-you-so that even Google believes that open source AI will out-compete both Google's own AI and the questionably-named OpenAI. From there we take a look at a light-up breadboard, listen to some magnetite music, and look inside a pair of smart sunglasses. Finally, we talk cars, beginning with the bleeding edge of driver-less. Then we go back in time to discuss in-vehicle record players of the late 1950s. Check out the links over on Hackaday to follow along, and as always, tell us what you think about this episode in the comments!

The world we create in our childhood dreams makes us believe that everything is possible. Although most of us outgrow them, sometimes dreams have the power to shape and influence our future. Dumitru Dorin Prunariu, today's guest on the Endurance Cartel is one of those people strong enough to let their dreams guide their path in life. After graduating from the Physics and Mathematics high school in Brașov, Dorin went on to the Politehnica University of Bucharest where he obtained a degree in Aerospace Engineering. In 1978, while working for the Romanian Aeronautic Industry, he was selected for spaceflight training in the Russian Intercosmos Program. After obtaining the highest marks in his three years of training in the program, Dorin became the first Romanian astronaut and the 103rd human being to fly into space. Listen to Dorin's fascinating story about testing the limits of human endurance and surviving for eight days in outer space, aboard the space station Salyute 6. In today's episode: (01:15) Dumitru Dorin Prunariu- the 103rd astronaut ever to fly into space and the first Romanian astronaut; (02:30) How it all started- graduating from the Politehnica University of Bucharest, with a degree in Aerospace Engineering, getting selected for the Russian Intercosmos program, and training in the Star City for three years; (06:12) Being trained for a short period of time as a commander for the spacecraft Soyuz 40; (07:57) Physical challenges while getting ready for the flight- combining theoretical and practical training with physical exercises and training in the centrifuge; (13:05) Launching day, May 14th, 1981 - what was going through his mind while preparing for flight and the story of the onions that ended up in space; (19:08) Seeing Earth from out of space- spotting Romania, the Carpathians, and the place where he was born; (21:46) Life on the Space Station Salyut 6- sleeping on the ceiling of the space station and experiencing weightlessness; (24:13) Waking up on the space station- what is daily life like in space? (29:14) How were the crew members getting along in the enclosed environment of the space station? Un unreported occurrence… (31:45) Sneaking a Canon camera into the space station despite Russians being against the use of any equipment that was not made in the Soviet Union or by one of the countries they had agreements with; (35:16) Facing difficulties while landing back on Earth; (38:11) Readjusting to gravity; (45:13) There's no political agenda that can interfere between astronauts and detour them from their common goals; (49:12) Elon Musk- a visionary or a dreamer? (51:29) Is there life on other planets in the Universe? (53:59) Advice for kids wanting to become astronauts; (56:00) Dorin's foundation, books, and future plans. Quotes: “They looked for the resistance in our bodies, not our strength. The resistance to face running many kilometers, to have normal breathing, the heart working normally during our training.” “The spacecraft was put into orbit, full silence, weightlessness inside, and everything started to float around.” “Your vestibular apparatus doesn't work normally on the ground in the first hours (from landing). Even the first day. After about two hours I could walk by myself, but only going straight. If I wanted to turn to the left or to the right, I just felt that my legs turned, but my body was going straight and I was falling down.” “Before my first space flight, I was a little bit scared. But I said, ok, I have to do it. I was trained for three years and this was the top of my career.” “Of course, we think that in the Universe there are intelligent beings. Maybe much more developed than we are, maybe less developed. We don't know yet, and we are still very far to determine where intelligent life could be in the Universe.” “When you fly into outer space you see the Earth as unity. You see the entire Earth and you understand that it belongs to all humans on Earth. You are not only a citizen of your country, you become a citizen of the planet. You see the beauties of the Earth and you also see the wounds of the Earth.” “I couldn't dream at that time to fly into outer space because, for Romania at that time, it was too far. For us, outer space belonged to the Soviet Union and to the United States.” Links selected from this episode: Intercosmos program- a Soviet space program, designed to help the Soviet Union's allies perform crewed and uncrewed space missions. After accepting they would not make it to the moon first, the Soivet Union shifted thier focus on creating space stations for scientific and miltiary observations in low Earth orbit. These stations, called Salyuts, saw several iterations in the 1970s. Not to be out done, the US launched its own Space Station - Skylab - built from left over Apollo Program parts following the final Apollo mission. The three US crews to call Skylab home spent nearly six months in space collectively, but tow of the crews faced serious problems that threatened their missions. This week on our show, we look up to the skies... That's right campers - there's no way that we could in good conscious call Camp Rad Strangeness the "best summer camp in any dimension" without diving into some really amazing stories about UFOs! We kick it off featuring a story by one of our very own campers, Mike, who tells his personal UFO encounter that happened on a warm late afternoon in Westminster, Massachusetts. His compelling story made us wonder...have there been other incidents in that area? What we found quite quickly was that Mike was not alone...there have been other incidents...even abductions by the visitors from above. We'll also dive into one of the raddest and strangest cosmic phenomena that we've heard. In July 1984, Russian cosmonauts orbiting the Earth aboard their space station Salut 7 experienced an encounter unlike any we have talked about on our show before. This happened not once - but twice, and not just by a single person...but, by six individuals. All of whom reported witnessing the same exact thing. So, put your binoculars in your backpack, get a fresh water bottle, and let's head down the rabbit trail together this week as we discuss The Salut 7, Space Angels, and Unidentified Flying Objects. **Special Thanks to Mike for sharing his personal story with us! So often folks are nervous to share something they've experienced for fear of being ridiculed, treated differently, or thought of differently after sharing - and so, they never do. To us it means the world that our listeners and friends give us the opportunity to share their story with everyone here on our show - a place where they will never have to worry about any of that! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SHOW INFO

As a space flight nut, I have many recordings from the 1970s from Radio Moscow. They used to broadcast on the medium wave, and I used to record the news bulletins during some of the space flights. In particular, there was a period between December 1977 and March 1978 when Soviet cosmonauts first lived aboard the Salyut 6 space station. I recorded each days' news reports on the flights, and also some additional items about them. Recorded by Colin Anderton, courtesy of the Shortwave Radio Archive.

They will join crew mates Chris Boshuizen – an Australian as featured on last week's episode of The Space Show – and Glen de Vries. For the people of the Soviet Union, Soyuz 11 was a novelty. State media provided regular updates on the space mission, which was rare. It even showed TV broadcasts of the three cosmonauts showing off some plants they were growing, and celebrating a birthday with prune paste and presents of an onion and a lemon. Pride in the mission turned to grief, though, when Soyuz 11 returned to Earth. When recovery forces opened the hatch 50 years ago yesterday, all three cosmonauts were dead. Georgi Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev had launched on June 6, 1971. They docked with the first space station, Salyut 1. They spent a record three weeks aboard the station. They operated a telescope, observed Earth, and conducted secret experiments for the military. When their work was done, they packed up for home. They separated their Soyuz capsule from the station, then split off their reentry module for the plunge through the atmosphere. No one knew it at the time, but that part of the process went horribly wrong. A valve opened and let the air escape into space. The cabin was too cramped for the cosmonauts to wear spacesuits, so they died in seconds. The automated landing system worked well, though, and Soyuz 11 touched down as expected. Recovery forces quickly reached the capsule, but heard nothing from the crew. When they opened the hatch, they found the cosmonauts dead — a tragic end to a record-breaking stay in space.
