[Launch Control: 25 seconds…] When space shuttle Columbia headed for orbit 25 years ago tomorrow, it made history. It was the first mission commanded by a woman – Air Force pilot Eileen Collins. And it was carrying the heaviest payload ever lofted by a shuttle: Chandra X-Ray Observatory – the largest X-ray telescope ever flown. [Launch Control: 5, 4, 3, we have a go for engine start, zero. We have booster ignition and liftoff of Columbia! Reaching new heights for women and X-ray astronomy.] And Chandra is maintaining those heights – it’s still working. The telescope studies some of the hottest and most energetic objects and events in the universe – exploding stars, outbursts from normal stars, gas around black holes, and much more. Such objects produce much of their energy in the form of X-rays. But Earth’s atmosphere blocks most X-rays, so the only way to study them is from space. Chandra’s orbit carries it more than a third of the way to the Moon. That puts it outside most of Earth’s radiation belts, which can “fog” X-ray images. X-rays go right through a normal telescope mirror. So Chandra uses a set of mirrors along the sides of the telescope tube. X-rays graze off those mirrors and come to a focus at the telescope’s instruments. Chandra is still making history today – by keeping a sharp “eye” on the X-ray sky. Script by Damond Benningfield

Darum geht es diesmal!Es hat schon seinen Grund, warum viele Automobilhersteller ihre neuen Modelle in südlichen Ländern vorstellen. Zum einen hat man eine gewisse Wettersicherheit, zum anderen findet man dort viele Straßenverläufe, die den Motorjournalisten die Fahreigenschaften von Autos zeigen. OK, unlimitierte Autobahnen gibt es in der Regel nur bei uns, aber dass Autos schnell fahren können, glaubt man auch so. Interessant ist es jedenfalls, ein Elektroauto in Spanien zu fahren, insbesondere eignen sich Straßen zwischen Bilbao und San Sebastián mit ihrem teils herausfordernden Profil ideal, um den Charakter des neuen Audi Q6 e-tron zu erleben. Power und Drive! Die Elektromotoren, die Audi im Q6 e-tron quattro und SQ6 e-tron verbaut hat, haben reichlich Leistung. Beide haben eine Permanentmagneterregte Synchronmaschine (PSM) an der Hinterachse und eine Asynchronmaschine (ASM) an der Vorderachse. Beim Q6 e-tron quattro sorgen sie für eine Leistung von 285 kW (387 PS), die den Wagen in nur 5,9 Sekunden von null auf 100 km/h beschleunigt. Beim SQ6 e-tron dauert dies dank 380 kW (516 PS) im Modus Launch Control nur 4,3 Sekunden. Bei E-Fahrzeugen ist aber auch das Thema Reichweite und Ladezeiten relevant. Hier spielt die die 800-Volt-Architektur eine große Rolle, denn damit sind Ladeleistungen von bis zu 270 kW möglich. Das prädiktive Thermomanagement verwertet Daten von Abfahrtstimer, Nutzungsverhalten, Streckenverlauf oder Navigation inklusive aktiver Routenführung mit Ladestopp-Planung. Um bis zu 270 kW beim DC-Laden aufnehmen zu können, wurde die Zellchemie der neu entwickelten Lithium-Ionen-Batterie mit einer Gesamtbruttokapazität von 100 kWh (94,9 kWh netto) optimiert. Hierbei ist es Audi gelungen, eine optimale Balance aus Energiedichte und Ladeperformance zu erreichen. Die Zellen haben einen deutlich reduzierten Kobalt-Anteil und für eine bestmögliche Ladeperformance niedrigere Widerstände. Bei einem State of Charge (SoC) von noch rund zehn Prozent reichen bereits zehn Minuten an einer Schnellladesäule aus, um bei einer maximalen Ladeleistung von 270 kW beim DC-Laden unter idealen Bedingungen eine Reichweite von bis zu 255 Kilometern zu generieren. The International Space Station was born 25 years ago today. The first piece of the station was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. It was built and launched by Russia, but paid for by the United States. For years, it provided control, crew quarters, and storage. Today, it's mainly a storage locker. Zarya is a Russian word for “sunrise.” The module was based on the design of the first series of Russian space stations, called Salyut. It's a steel can more than 40 feet long. It weighed more than 20 tons at launch, plus several tons of propellants. It wasn't alone for long. Space shuttle Endeavour delivered the second module, known as Unity, a couple of weeks later. Astronauts used a robotic arm to attach the two pieces. It took a couple of years for the station to really start to take shape, though. Today, it consists of dozens of major pieces. In all, they span more than the length of a football field, with a total mass of almost a million pounds. AUDIO: Godspeed, John Glenn. 3, 2, 1, zero, ignition, liftoff! The MA-6 vehicle has lifted off... John Glenn was an instant legend. On February 20th of 1962, he became the first American to orbit Earth. The feat earned him a trip to the White House and the biggest ticker-tape parade in 35 years. Glenn found there was a problem with his new status, though. NASA didn't want to risk its most famous astronaut, so he wasn't allowed to fly in space again. He left the space program and went into politics, and eventually was elected to the United States Senate. Glenn still wanted to fly in space again, though. His flight aboard his Mercury capsule, Friendship 7, had lasted just five hours, and that just wasn't enough. Eventually, Glenn lobbied NASA to allow him to fly on a space shuttle. He'd serve as a guinea pig — researchers could study the effects of spaceflight on the aging process. The agency gave in. And 25 years ago today, at age 77, John Glenn returned to space — the oldest person ever to reach orbit. LAUNCH CONTROL: 3, 2, 1, and liftoff of Osiris-Rex. Its seven-year mission, to boldly go to the asteroid Bennu and back. The seven years are up. Osiris-Rex flew to the asteroid Bennu, kept pace with it for two and a half years, and kicked up some dust and pebbles from its surface. It grabbed some of that debris. And tomorrow, it's scheduled to drop a canister filled with those samples into Earth's atmosphere, where it will parachute to a soft landing in Utah. Bennu is both a scientific treasure and an existential threat. The asteroid is about a third of a mile in diameter. It contains a lot of organic compounds — the chemical building blocks of life. Asteroids like Bennu could have pounded the young Earth, providing some of the key ingredients for life on our planet. So the samples could tell us more about the development of life on Earth. On the other hand, Bennu's orbit comes close to Earth's orbit. That means Bennu could someday slam into our planet, causing massive destruction. Some close encounters with Earth in the 22nd century could put Bennu on a collision course. Learning about the asteroid could help future generations deflect it from such a path. Osiris-Rex probably collected at least a pound of material from Bennu, and possibly four pounds or more. The sample container will be taken to Johnson Space Center in Houston, where its treasures will be parsed out to scientists around the world. LAUNCH CONTROL: T-minus 30 seconds, and the countdown continuing to go smoothly. ... Skylab — the first American space station — was going to be a fixer-upper. It was damaged during launch on May 14th, 1973. So when the first team of astronauts headed for the station 50 years ago today, it had a lot of work to do. LAUNCH CONTROL: 5, 4, 3, engine sequence start, 2, 1, zero. We have launch commit, and we have liftoff! The clock is running, and Skylab has cleared the tower. CONRAD: Houston, Skylab 2. We fix anything! But the “fixing” wasn't easy. Astronauts Pete Conrad, Joseph Kerwin, and Paul Weitz set out to repair their damaged home. It had lost a protective shield and one of two solar panels, with the other one jammed shut. If the astronauts couldn't fix the problems, they'd have to come home and let the next crew take a shot. And at first, things didn't go well. A tool designed to free the jammed solar panel didn't work. And at the end of the first day in orbit, their Apollo spacecraft wouldn't link up with the station. They had to take the docking system apart to fix the problem. The crew moved into Skylab, then deployed a cover to bring down the temperatures. And ground controllers eventually worked out a way to fix the balky solar panel. So the mission continued. The astronauts studied Earth, the Sun, and how their bodies reacted to a record 28 days in orbit — a record that stood until the next Skylab mission later that year. Richard Stachurski joined the US Air Force in 1962, on the cusp of the Cuban Missile Crisis as a security police officer guarding nuclear-armed B-58 Hustler bombers.Within two years he volunteered for the Minuteman nuclear missile program where he served as a Deputy Missile Combat Crew Commander with the 68th Strategic Missile Squadron at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota. Richard was the junior officer on a two-man crew in a launch control capsule buried beneath the South Dakota prairie who was charged with monitoring the status and launching if necessary ten Minuteman ICBMs. In 1965 he was selected as one of 128 Air Force officers to be loaned to NASA to support the activation and operation of the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas. He worked his way up to being a Network Controller, who sat two consoles to the right of the Flight Director in the Mission Operations Control Room. He was responsible for all the ground systems that supported an Apollo mission and was selected as the lead Network Controller on Apollo 11 working on both the launch from Earth and the first-ever launch from the lunar surface. When the first Apollo astronauts landed on the Moon, it was all about politics. The goal was to get them to the Moon and back by the end of the 1960s, winning a race against the Soviet Union. But by the time the fifth landing mission headed for the Moon 50 years ago this month, it was all about the science. LAUNCH CONTROL: Five, four ... The engines now building up to 7.7 million pounds of thrust ... We have a launch commit, and we have a liftoff! The swing arms moving back. We've cleared the tower. [11] Apollo 16 was targeted for a region known as Descartes, in the Moon's rugged highlands. Earlier missions had landed on the smoother plains. It was thought that Descartes might have been created by volcanoes, and not by asteroid impacts. Astronauts John Young and Charles Duke landed on April 20th, 1972. They spent three days on the Moon. They made three moonwalks, and drove their lunar rover almost 17 miles. They picked up more than 200 pounds of rocks and dirt. And they set up instruments that operated long after the astronauts returned to Earth. The samples showed that their landing zone wasn't built by volcanoes. Instead, the mission demonstrated that volcanic mountains are few and far between — important science from the penultimate mission to the Moon. More about Apollo 16 tomorrow. The vehicle unveiled at CES is meant to be just a concept, but it looks very close to production-ready. Chrysler says its first EV will start production in 2025. - Stellantis, the multi-national conglomeration that formed last year when Fiat Chrysler merged with the French PSA Group, intends for Chrysler to serve as the tip of the spear for its electrification strategy. - The concept Airflow comes with all-wheel drive thanks to two 150kW motors, one in each axle. However, the drivetrain can be adjusted to accommodate more powerful motors in the future, Chrysler says. The company didn't provide details on the battery's size or energy capacity, but it did estimate a range of 350-400 miles per charge. - Inside, the vehicle is chock-a-block with screens: four in the front and two for rear passengers. The large central infotainment screen is flanked by smaller screens for the driver and passenger. Eigenschaften, die die jüngsten Generationen des Audi RS 3 Sportback und der RS 3 Limousine an die Spitze des Kompaktsegments fahren lassen. Mit 294 kW (400 PS) Leistung sprinten sie dank Launch Control in 3,8 Sekunden von 0 auf 100 km/h. Das ist drei Zehntel schneller als bisher. Der elektronisch auf 250 km/h begrenzte Top-Speed lässt sich optional auf 290 km/h steigern – ebenso wie die Beschleunigung ein Bestwert im Kompaktsegment. Im NEFZ-Zyklus verbrauchen die RS 3 Limousine und der RS 3 Sportback im Durchschnitt zwischen 8,2 und 8,8 Liter Kraftstoff pro 100 Kilometer. Die CO2 Emissionen liegen kombiniert bei 188 – 198 g/km. Die Innenausstattung!Im Innenraum betonen viele RS-spezifische Elemente die Sportlichkeit. Das 12,3 Zoll große, serienmäßige Audi virtual cockpit plus zeigt die Drehzahl im RS-Runway-Design. Hier werden die Werte, grafisch ähnlich der Start- und Landebahn eines Flugzeugs, in umgekehrter Richtung dargestellt – also die höchste Drehzahl imVorder- und der Leerlauf im Hintergrund. APOLLO 15: Hello, Houston, the Endeavour is on station with cargo, and what a fantastic sight. CAPCOM: Beautiful news! Romantic, isn't it? The next day, Scott and Irwin boarded the lunar module, Falcon, and headed for the surface. FALCON: Eight feet, minus one. Contact! Man! Okay, Houston, Falcon is on the plain at Hadley. CAPCOM: Roger roger, Falcon. The site was ringed by the Apennine Mountains, which are almost three miles high. They formed when an asteroid slammed into the Moon four billion years ago. Shockwaves piled up layers of rock. So geologists hoped the base of the mountains might offer samples of the Moon's early crust. The site also offered details on the impact. Falcon landed at the edge of Hadley Rille, a canyon a mile wide and a quarter of a mile deep. It probably formed when a lava tube collapsed. Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth. He circled the planet three times aboard his tiny capsule, Friendship 7. Then came parades, a reception at the White House, and other honors. Glenn was born 100 years ago today, in Ohio. He was an outgoing athlete in high school, and earned a pilot's license while in college. During World War II, he became a fighter pilot. He flew combat missions during that war and in Korea. Glenn then became a test pilot. And in 1959, he was picked as one of America's first astronauts — the Mercury Seven. During their introduction at a press conference, Glenn emerged as the favorite. GLENN: Well, my wife made a remark the other day, I've been out of this world for a long time, I might as well go on out there. After his flight, NASA didn't want to risk its most popular astronaut, so it grounded him. Glenn turned to politics, and was elected to the U.S. Senate. But he never lost the desire to fly in space again. He convinced NASA to launch him on a space shuttle, in 1998. Hubble Space Telescope entered orbit 30 years ago last week. LAUNCH CONTROL: 3, 2, 1, and liftoff of the space shuttle Discovery with the Hubble Space Telescope, our window on the universe. And it’s still going today. Over the decades, it’s provided new insights into stars and galaxies, the age of the universe, and even the future of the universe. But it’s needed some help. ENDEAVOUR: Endeavour has a firm handshake with Mr. Hubble’s Telescope. Five crews of shuttle astronauts upgraded its instruments and repaired or replaced ailing systems — the last in 2009. LAUNCH CONTROL: Liftoff of space shuttle Atlantis on the final visit to enhance the vision of Hubble. A service call is unusual for missions of exploration, though. Engineers can send commands to overcome some problems, and they can upgrade the computer software, but major failures don’t get fixed. Even so, several explorers have operated as long as Hubble has — or even longer. The champions are Voyagers 1 and 2. They were launched in 1977 to explore the outer solar system. They’ve left the solar system behind — they’re studying interstellar space. They’re losing power, so most of their instruments have been turned off. And they have occasional problems. Voyager 2, for example, went into “safe mode” in late January. It saw that something was wrong, then shut down and waited to hear from Earth. The Global Rallycross season kicks off for the Subaru Puma Rallycross Team, as Bucky Lasek, Dave Mirra, and Sverre Isachsen head overseas for X Games Barcelona. After a test session in the picturesque Monterrat area of Spain, its time to hit the track in anger for the first time this season. However, nobody was expecting the sequence of events that would transpire on race day.
In this episode, David Higgins and Subaru Rally Team USA are on the west coast for the Oregon Trail Rally, while Bucky Lasek, Dave Mirra, Sverre Isachsen and the Subaru PUMA Rallycross Team are hard at work in Connecticut testing the new cars in preparation for the first overseas event.
David Higgins and Craig Drew of Subaru Rally Team USA may be back-to-back champions, but at the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood, Ken Block has been king. A win here at round two for Higgins would rock the boat and shake things up for the rest of the series. But, an overnight storm in Missouri has dumped snow on the high-speed stages, placing the whole outcome into question. Can the teams keep it on the road in the treacherous conditions? Can Higgins and Drew get their first career win at this event?
Subaru PUMA Rallycross Team driver, Bucky Lasek, visits Vermont to get sideways with Formula D driver Ryan Tuerck on the snow covered forest roads, and drops in at Vermont SportsCar to check out his new rallycross car and show the team his gratitude. Meanwhile the Subaru Rally Team USA is in Missouri testing for the highspeed Rally in the 100 Acre Wood, where Mother Nature throws competitors a curve ball.
Episode 2 left off with the Subaru Rally Team USA facing an overnight rebuild after a crash on the first day of Sno*Drift Rally 2013. The mechanics had a long night ahead of them to get the car back in action. Would the car be ready? Could Higgins and Drew hold on to their slim lead? Episode 3 has the answers.
