Constable Johnnie Raymond “Bill” Garsee was shot dead in front of his Moscow, Texas barn in April of 1984. Originally from San Augustine, Bill, his wife, and three children had settled down in the small town three decades before. Being a huge name on the rodeo circuit in a rodeo town like Moscow, locals warmly welcomed Bill and his family. As the years went on, he became Precinct 3 Constable and garnered the respect and friendship of everyone. So, when he was gunned down in cold-blood as a 61-year-old man in 1984, the Polk County Sheriff's Office was left baffled. They had theories but could get none to stick. If you have any information about the murder of Johnnie Raymond “Bill” Garsee, please contact the Polk County Sheriff's Office at (936) 327-6810.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X.Search @gonecoldpodcast at all or just click linknbio.com/gonecoldpodcastSources: The Light and Champion, The Polk County Enterprise, The Tyler Morning Telegraph, and The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. #JusticeForBillGarsee #MoscowTX #PolkCountyTX #Texas #TX #TrueCrime #TexasTrueCrime #TrueCrimePodcast #Podcast #Unsolved #GoneCold #GoneColdPodcast #UnsolvedMysteries #TrueCrime #Disappeared #Vanished #MissingPerson #Missing #Homicide #UnsolvedMurder #ColdCase #CrimeStories #PodcastRecommendations #SerialKiller #TrueCrimeCommunity #CrimeJunkie #MysteryPodcast #TrueCrimeObsessed #CrimeDocs #InvestigationDiscovery #PodcastAddict #TrueCrimeFan #CriminalJustice #ForensicFiles #TrueCrimeAddict #TrueCrimeLovers #CrimeScene #PodcastLifeBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/gone-cold-texas-true-crime--3203003/support.

When 39 year old Bernie Tiede confessed to the murder of his friend and companion, 81 year old Marjorie Nugent in November 1996, the revelation came as a shock to the small town of Carthage, Texas. The two had been inseparable friends since the death of Nugent's husband in 1990 and as far as anyone in Carthage could tell, Nugent couldn't have picked a more devoted companion than Tiede. Yet as the details of the crime began to emerge, a strange story began to take shape—Tiede's supposed motive for the murder was to gain access to Nugent's fortune, but what he did with that money once he had access defied the logic and expectations of greed. The story of Bernie Tiede and Marjorie Nugent should have ended with the trial and conviction of Tiede, but a few years later, Bernie's story became the subject of a big Hollywood film, shining a spotlight on the story and raising new questions about the extent of Bernie's responsibility for the murder. Tiede remains a rarity in the history of American crime: a sympathetic killer almost no one in town wanted to see convicted.Thank you to the wonderful David White, of the Bring me the Axe podcast, for research assistanceReferencesAssociated Press. 1997. Episode 31 -The Runaway Scrape, the Battle of San Jacinto, and Independence It's the spring of 1836 and the Alamo has fallen, folks are scared, and many people have no idea what's going to happen. As a result, what has become known as the Runaway Scrape is taking shape. But what was the Runaway Scrape and why isn't it talked about? Many Texans aren't exactly proud of the Runaway Scrape, because it was created by the Texas settlers who fled from their homes when Santa Anna began his drive into Texas starting in February of 1836. Now looking back in time, you can't really blame the settlers for leaving, after all Santa Anna was determined to crush any semblance of independence or revolution. If you look at a map of Texas it's easy to see the first communities that were affected. Those where those who were in the south central portions of the state. This area centered around San Patricio, Refugio, and San Antonio. Those folks actually began to leave in mid January of 1836 when they heard that the Mexican army was gathering on the Rio Grande. Things intensified once Sam Houston arrived in Gonzales on March 11 and learned about the fall of the Alamo. At that time he decided to retreat inland and east towards the Colorado River, and he ordered all local inhabitants to accompany him. Houston sent riders out from Gonzales to spread the news of the fall of the Alamo. Of course, upon hearing this news and knowing there was nothing between themselves and Santa Anna's troops, people began to leave everything and make their way to safety. As a result, this became an extremely large scale evacuation and the temporary capital Washington-on-the-Brazos was deserted by March 17. By April 1 Richmond and settlements on both sides of the Brazos river were evacuated. As Houston continued to retreat eastward towards the Sabine River he left every settlement between the Colorado and the Brazos defenseless. For their own safety, those settlers began making their way toward Louisiana or Galveston Island. East Texas areas of Nacogdoches and San Augustine ended up abandoned just before April 13. One of the facts that often goes unreported about the flight was how because of the panic there was little or no preparation. There was also significant fear not only because of the Mexican army but also by the frontier Indians. The refugees traveled by any type of transportation they could find, or they walked. They experienced diseases, the weather was cold, wet, and many of them suffered from a lack of food. Added to the discomforts of travel and their fear were all kinds of diseases, intensified by cold, rain, and hunger. Many of them died and those who did were buried where they fell. The evacuation continued up to and until they received news of Houston's victory in the battle of San Jacinto. The battle of San Jacinto was the final battle of the Texas Revolution. Due to Sam Houston's constant movement to the East, many Texans thought it would never take place. The army left Gonzales on March 13, 1836, crossed the Colorado River on the 17th, and then pitched camp near present day Columbus on the 20th. During the march Houston had been trying to recruit volunteers and with reinforcements from other groups, the army increased its about 1,200. While this was an improvement, scouts reported that there was close to 1325 Mexican troops west of the Colorado. Then on the 25th, they learned that Fannin had been defeated and his men slaughtered in Goliad. and at that point many of the men left to go join their families on the Runaway Scrape. Houston was not deterred and led his troops to San Felipe de Austin by the 28th and by the 30th they arrived at the Jared E. Groce plantation on the Brazos River. At this time, interim President David G. Burnet ordered Houston to stop his retreat; Secretary of War Thomas J. Rusk urged him to be more decisive in his defense of Texas. Meanwhile Santa Anna decided to take control of the Texas coast and ...
In this episode, I discuss perhaps the most famous of all battles, the Alamo. In previous episodes, I've discussed the battles that took place Gonzales, Goliad (La Bahia), and the Siege of Bexar (or San Antonio) which took place from October through December of 1835. I've discussed a group of Texans who were very important in the revolution, the Tejanos, the Mexican Texans. Now it's time to look at the actual battle of the Alamo. Before I get too much into the actual story, I need to mention that there have been at least 8 movies made about the alamo, with the 1st being produced in 1915. It was a silent movie called Martyrs of the Alamo and it was produced by D.W. Griffith. Now, let's be honest and fair. Most of the movies about the battle of the Alamo are nonsense. The first of them, the one by D.W. Griffith was total garbage. Griffith, whose contributions to the movie industry cannot be denied, was a well-known white supremacist whose movies all reflected that. Now the 2004 version is probably the most accurate of the movies made about the battle, but even it took what we call literary license with the events that took place, especially in the use of dialogue. So what really happened? One thing that the movies do get correct is there were some big-name folks who fought there. One of them was David Crockett, from Tennessee, (by the way his actual fiddle is in the Witte Museum in San Antonio, and I once had a chance to hear it played during a recording session that took place in the Alamo Chapel). On different sides of the battle were two men who had once been friends adventurer James Bowie, and Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna. For a large number of Americans and almost all Texans, the battle for the Alamo has become a symbol of patriotic sacrifice and bravery. The men and women who were in the battle were indeed brave and as I mentioned in the beginning, the traditional popular novels, stage plays, and motion pictures, obscure the actual historical event. To understand the reality of the battle, we have to look at why San Antonio and the Alamo itself was strategic. Remember how in December 1835 a Federalist army of Texan (or Texian, as they were called) immigrants, American volunteers, and their Tejano allies had captured San Antonio from the Mexican Army, or the Centralist forces that were there during the siege of Bexar. As I said in the episode about the Siege of Bexar after the victory, a majority of the Texan volunteers of the "Army of the People" left service and returned to their families. Even though the siege itself was over many members of the provisional government feared the Centralists would mount a spring offensive. The main issue with that is there were only two main roads leading into Texas from the interior of Mexico. The first was the Atascosito Road, which stretched from Matamoros on the Rio Grande northward through San Patricio, Goliad, Victoria, and finally into the heart of Austin's colony. The second was the Old San Antonio Road, a Camino real that crossed the Rio Grande at Paso de Francia (the San Antonio Crossing) and wound northeastward through San Antonio de Béxar, Bastrop, Nacogdoches, San Augustine, and across the Sabine River into Louisiana. Each of these roads were blocked by forts. Presidio La Bahía at Goliad and the Alamo at San Antonio. Each spot served almost like an early warning system, ready to alert the Texas settlements of any enemy advance. The Bexar garrison, or the Alamo was commanded by James Clinton Neill. While James Walker Fannin, Jr., took over the forces at Goliad. Many of the settlers had returned to home and that meant that some newly arrived American volunteers made up a majority of the troops at Goliad and Bexar. Both Neill and Fannin were determined to stall the Centralists on the frontier and not let them easily move inland, but they were not delusional. Without speedy reinforcements,

Neighbor is anybody who crosses my path and needs my help. Sinabi ni Hesus, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven.” Sa ganitong klaseng pagmamahal, makikita ang tunay na pagiging Kristiyano. Our enemies become our neighbor. Sa papaanong paraan? Huwag gumanti. Hindi natin mawawakasan ang kasamaan, sa pamamagitan ng isa pang kasamaan. Bagong pananaw ang ibinibigay sa atin ni Hesus. Christ accepted the violence of suffering and death and refused retaliation. Mula sa krus sinabi niya: Ama, patawarin mo sila sapagkat hindi nila nalalaman ang kanilang ginagawa. Panghuli, to pray for our enemies. Ito'y tipikal na pagiging tunay na Kristiyano. Kung maipagdarasal lang sana natin ang ating mga kaaway, unti-unting magbabago ang lahat. For nothing is impossible in prayer. Fr. Brian Tayag, SSP / Society of St. Paul

Kevin Dutton shares the rewards and challenges of presiding as District Attorney over two east Texas counties, San Augustine and Sabine on the shores of Lake Sam Rayburn. From a tiny office run on a meager budget to a full- blown department, he shares some of the growing pains he's experienced over the years, including the effects two years of COVID have had on crime in his communities. This candid interview occurred literally as we stepped out of the courtroom during our lunch break from a full day in district court, hearing criminal arraignments and pleas. After many previous episodes interviewing defense attorneys and defendants, this one reveals the State's perspective, and all of the duties and obligations that go with it.
When the gun smoke cleared, four men were found dead at the hardware store in a rural East Texas town. But this December 1934 shootout was no anomaly. San Augustine County had seen at least three others in the previous three years, and these murders in broad daylight were only the latest development in the decade-long rule of the criminal McClanahan-Burleson gang. Armed with handguns, Jim Crow regulations, and corrupt special Ranger commissions from infamous governors “Ma” and “Pa” Ferguson, the gang racketeered and bootlegged its way into power in San Augustine County, where it took up robbing and extorting local black sharecroppers as its main activity. After the hardware store shootings, white community leaders, formerly silenced by fear of the gang's retribution, finally sought state intervention. In 1935, fresh-faced, newly elected governor James V. Allred made good on his promise to reform state law enforcement agencies by sending a team of qualified Texas Rangers to San Augustine County to investigate reports of organized crime. In East Texas Troubles: The Allred Rangers' Cleanup of San Augustine (University of Oklahoma Press, 2019), historian Jody Edward Ginn tells of their year-and-a-half-long cleanup of the county, the inaugural effort in Governor Allred's transformation of the Texas Rangers into a professional law enforcement agency. Besides foreshadowing the wholesale reform of state law enforcement, the Allred Rangers' investigative work in San Augustine marked a rare close collaboration between white law enforcement officers and black residents. Drawing on firsthand accounts and the sworn testimony of black and white residents in the resulting trials, Ginn examines the consequences of such cooperation in a region historically entrenched in racial segregation. In this story of a rural Texas community's resurrection, Ginn reveals a multifaceted history of the reform of the Texas Rangers and of an unexpected alliance between the legendary frontier lawmen and black residents of the Jim Crow South. Jesus said it is “the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.” Let's notice some of the roles He plays in the life of the believer.THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE SPIRIT OF LIFE TO OVERCOME THE SELF LIFEPaul's struggle with the conflict in the two natures in the Child of God in Romans 7. There are no less than 30 “I's” in this chapter. What is the answer to the self life as taught by Paul? Romans 8:2, "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." We are emancipated by the Law of the Spirit of Life from the law of sin and death. The law of sin and death cannot reach us. We are in Christ which is off limits to the law of sin and death. The Holy Spirit is actively engaged according to our faith in neutralizing the effects of the flesh. Galatians 5:16-17, "This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would." It does not say that the flesh will not attempt to over throw the faith of the believer. It does say, “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.Romans 8:13, "For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live."THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE “SPIRIT OF GOD?” IN CONTRAST TO THE IMPOTENCE AND INCOMPETENCE OF MANThe epistles to the Corinthians deal with a body of believers who were man-centered; hence, they were “carnal.” This is brought out in 1 Corinthians 3:3, "For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?" The secret to what Paul is saying is found in the words, “and walk as men?” Unsaved men is what Paul is comparing them to. Every Christian needs to realize that while they have power to walk in holiness before the Lord and man, it is also possible to draw back and succumb to the peer pressure and walk after the flesh. When this happens, no one will suspect them of being Christians. This is what Paul calls carnal. They are self centered. One who is Christ centered is not hard to find. He will stick out in a crowd and make people feel uneasy around him. The apostle reminds them that they cannot of themselves understand the Word of God, nor fathom the deep things of God, nor apply the truths of God; for the Spirit is the Unfolder of the Word, the Enlightener of the mind, and the Communicator of the gospel. This is all brought out in 1 Corinthians 2:14-15, "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man."God has given the Holy Spirit an indispensable role to play and he is limited only by the unbelief of the believer. The Holy Spirit can exert great power through the believer who is committed without reserve to God.THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE SPHERE IN WHICH THE BELIEVER IS TO LIVEThe Holy Spirit is the Cleanser to remove every defiling thing from the life, and the Irradiator to cause the sun of the holiness of God to shine into and out of our lives. There are seven which we are told not to do in Ephesians 4:25-31:1. We are told not to lie. 2. We are told to be angry and sin not.3. We are told not to give place to the devil.4. We are told not to steal.5. We are told not to let our tongue to be a medium of “corrupt communications.”6. We are told not grieve the Holy Spirit.7. We are told not to allow bitterness and its attendant evils to be associated with us.These things cannot be done in our own power. Being filled with the Spirit is absolutely necessary. Then we like Paul can say as in Galatians 6:14, "But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world."May the Lord bless these words to our hearts.Don't forget to visit HardwareOnTheSquare.com and find out more about our amazing service and the only Pizza Restaurant in San Augustine Texas.

While God has never had but one plan of salvation, He has definitely dealt differently with regard to the Holy Spirit before Pentecost. The Holy Spirit came on certain to empower their ministry and the Lord could withdraw His Spirit because of sin. However it is different since Pentecost. John 14:16-17, "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you." The Holy Spirit as given on Pentecost is a permanent gift. Acts 2:39, "For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." The indwelling is so necessary that Paul says if one does not have the Holy Spirit he is none of His.In the texts which speak of His indwelling, various expressive and suggestive figures are used. I will mention a few:AS A FACTOR IN A HOUSERomans 8:9-10, "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness."The Spirit takes possession of the heart for Christ, so that Christ dwelleth in our hearts by His Spirit. The Spirit occupies till He comes. And every house (heart) thus occupied is occupied all for Christ. We must keep the key of every door. He must have the use of all the furniture. The world knoweth Him not, but ye know Him, for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you (John 14:17).AS A SPRING IN A WELLJohn 4:14, "But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life."Jesus spoke these words to a woman at Jacob's well. It was an illustration that He used to make her His disciple. Man's heart by nature is like a well filled with rottenness. Cleansing must precede usefulness. This living spring within fills and satisfies the whole being. Psalms 87:7 says, "As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there: all my springs are in thee."AS A RIVER IN A FOUNTAINJohn 7:38-39, "He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified)"The blessing is not confined to a well, but flows out like refreshing streams. The Spirit dwelling in us is to be as an unfailing fountain to others. But the overflow will only be in proportion to the springing up within. There is a condition to the constant overflow. We must continually drink at this Source. Then the results will be a constant overflow in our lives.AS THE STRENGTH IN THE BODYEphesians 5:18, "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;" This speaks of the constant overflow of the believer to those who need to know the Lord. Micah 3:8, "But truly I am full of power by the Spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin."A strong man does not put off and on his strength as occasions require. He carries it with him and in him. He simply uses it as the Spirit directs, and every part of his body is filled with it. He is literally filled with power. A man, no matter how strong he may be intellectually or morally, who has not the 'power of the Spirit' is, as helpless as a dead corpse.AS THE GLORY IN THE TEMPLE1 Corinthians 3:16, "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?" The presence of the glory is the symbol of Divine ownership and occupancy. Ephesians 2:19-22, "Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit."May the Lord bless these words to our hearts.Don't forget to visit HardwareOnTheSquare.com and find out more about our amazing service and the only Pizza Restaurant in San Augustine Texas.

John +15:26, "But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:" We receive the adoption of sons when we are saved. Galatians 4:5, "To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons."We receive Christ and believe that in receiving Him we have been given the right to become sons according to This promise. John +1:12, "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:"In the same way He has given us the right to receive the Holy Spirit and to become sons endued with power. Let us notice several conditions indicated in Scripture on which the Holy Spirit is given and received. THE CONDITION OF FORGIVENESSActs +2:38, "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."The only definitive statement as to when the Holy Spirit come to the believer in this age is found in Ephesians +1:13, "In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,"God does not fill a lost man with the Holy Spirit. Forgiveness is a prerequisite to the coming of the Holy Spirit. THE CONDITION OF SONSHIPGalatians 4:6, "And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father." There is nothing in this verse that would suggest that the Holy Spirit is given subsequent to salvation. It is clear that Paul is saying, “Because ye are sons, God hath sent forth His Spirit into your hearts.” Note carefully he says, “Because ye are sons.” The Holy Spirit is not God's reward to our faithfulness but His gift to our weakness. Galatians 4:6, "And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father." Note: “because ye are sons.”THE CONDITION OF FELT NEEDIsaiah 44:3, "For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:" There are key words in this text that suggest that there is a longing, a felt need of the Holy Spirit, as spoken of here. Let's notice,1. God responds to a desire. “For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty.” The problem today is that they have all of God they want. There is no thirst.2. God will also water the dry ground. There are a lot of churches that need a good flood of water as is mentioned in this verse.3. God says He will also “pour My Spirit upon thy seed.”4. God commits to bless their offspring. CONDITION OF FAITHThis spake He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive (John 7:39). In Galatians 3:13-14, "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith."Some blaspheme the Holy Spirit when they turn the church service into a carnival and say it is a work of the Holy Spirit. The people who participate get a surge of adrenaline that last almost as long as it takes them to get out of church. The faith that brought Jesus into your life is the same faith that receives the Spirit to enable them to do the work of preaching the gospel.CONDITION OF OBEDIENCEActs 5:32, "And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him."The Lord is not going to have a part in disobedience. While the Spirit indwells every believer, He only empowers the obedient.THE CONDITION OF PRAYERLuke 1 +1:13, "If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?" We have this definite promise. Our lack is on our part, not the Lord's.It was while Jesus was praying that the Heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended (Luke 3:21). It was when the disciples had prayed that they were all filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 4:31). It was when Solomon had made an end of praying that the fire and the glory filled the house.” (2 Chron. 7:1).May the Lord bless these word to our hearts.Don't forget to visit HardwareOnTheSquare.com and find out more about our amazing service and the only Pizza Restaurant in San Augustine Texas.
A SEVENFOLD VIEW OF THE HOLY SPIRITJohn 16:13"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come."There is a sense in which the Holy Spirit has always been in the world. For instance the Holy Spirit was in and worked in the lives of the saints in the Old Testament. David said in Psalms 51:11, "Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me." According to the way David prayed here, the Holy Spirit would come and go at will. He did not permanently indwell those who were permanently saved. So David prays, “Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy Holy Spirit from me.”There when Jesus came and at the point where His public ministry began, He received the Holy Spirit without measure. John 3:34 says, “For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.” Matthew 3:16 says, “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:”I want us to get a sevenfold view of the Holy Spirit in this meditation.THE SPIRIT OF LIFERomans 8:2 says, "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death."The Holy Spirit is called “The Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.” And we are told what this means practically and eternally. We are made free from the law of sin and death. This is in Christ Jesus. Are you in Christ? I'm not talking about, are you in a Church? As important as church is in its proper place, the church cannot set one free from the law of sin and death. Only Jesus can do that. And the way He does that is first of all settle the penalty that was justly passed against us, i.e., death. This is the reason He came and died. He came and paid our sin debt in full. Next he sets us free from the law of sin and death by meeting the just demands of the law. The law no longer has a claim on us. Jesus has paid the penalty for us and the JUDGE has agreed that the payment He made for us satisfies His judgment against us. So, I am a sinner set free by grace as a gift to faith that will reach out and receive it as a gift. THE SPIRIT OF SONSHIPRomans 8:15, "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."The words “For ye have not received the spirit of bondage. . .” translate “lambano” and means, “to take with the hand, lay hold of, any person or thing in order to use it.” It is an aorist tense verb which means a once-for-all act. Paul is saying that the gift of the Spirit was received at a time and place. The active voice means that a decision had to be made on their part. God forces salvation on no one. It is offered, and those receive salvation as a gift based on God's promise, come immediately into possession of eternal life. Eternal life is the present possession of the believer. When one is saved, he is indwelt from that time forward by the Holy Spirit which is the earnest of our salvation. The idea of the Spirit being the earnest of our salvation is for the purpose of assurance. How do I know I am saved? Because I already have the earnest of salvation and this earnest will never be taken away. Paul speaks of this in 2 Corinthians 1:22, “Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.” The earnest is the down payment on and our guarantee of the completion of the transaction. The Holy Spirit is just a part of the whole that will be finished at the coming of our Lord. By this we know that God will finish what He set out to do. He will glorify us and take us as His bride and establish us in His eternal kingdom. He wants us to live on this earth after we are saved believing this. So He gives us the firm guarantee of the finished work. Salvation is God's work and you can be sure He will finish it.THE SPIRIT OF PROMISEEphesians 1:13 says, "In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise," The steps are clearly set out in this verse. Paul says, “In whom ye also trusted, after ye heard the word of truth.” There are two important steps spelled out here. First, one must hear the word of truth. It is not just any truth that one must believe to be saved. Second, he defines what word of truth He is speaking of. He spells it out, “the gospel of your salvation.” The gospel is the power of God unto salvation. This gospel is defined in 1 Cor. 15:1-3. Then it must be believed without mixture or error. It is not the death and resurrection plus something else like baptism or the Lord's Supper. These are great ordinances but they have no saving power. It is faith that what Jesus did on the cross completely satisfied the wrath of God against sin.I believe that and so does every saved person alive on this earth. If you are a church member and do not believe this, please go no further in your hypocrisy. It is not the brand that saves but the blood of the sinless Son of God that saves. The Spirit is the Spirit of promise. He is able to make a promise and keep it. This is what He did that sets us free. We have received the Holy Spirit of promise.THE SPIRIT OF POWER2 Timothy 1:7, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." We have not been given the spirit of fear. The word “fear” translates “deilia” and means, “timidity, fearfulness, cowardice.” The words “sound mind” translates “sophronismos” and means, “an admonishing or calling to soundness of mind, to moderation and self-control.” Many believe Timothy was a timid person. And Paul used this to exhort him to boldness inpreaching the gospel. The word of God is, our authority. And when one teaches the Scripture he is not to do it apologetically. It is the word of God and once we are convinced of what it says, we are to preach with boldness. So Paul tells Timothy that God has not given us the Spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Next Paul tells Timothy that the Spirit we received from God is,THE SPIRIT OF TRUTHThe Holy Spirit has nothing to do with wrong theology or wrong methods. Truth is the essence of the Holy Spirit's revelation. Thank the Lord we have His infallible illumination and his unfaltering guidance into all truth.Jesus deals with this in John 16:13, "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come."THE SPIRIT OF WISDOMThe Holy Spirit of wisdom is the Holy Spirit in essence. It is impossible for the Holy Spirit not to be wise. He has all the attributes of God because He is God. And God is Wisdom personified. There are many things said about the Spirit of wisdom in the Bible. Exodus 28:3 says, “And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron's garments to consecrate him, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office.” God has given certain men the Spirit of wisdom to make the garments for the priest's office.James 1:5 says, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of wisdom and He is available continually. He indwells the believer supplying his every need. Wisdom is not knowledge. Wisdom is knowing how to apply knowledge. Believers are pilgrims in a world that cares nothing for God. And we need the wisdom that God gives to make it in this world. There are the visas that missionaries have to get to enter the country of their calling. We definitely need the wisdom of God to give the right answers, to make the right statements, to be silent when we need to be silent, if we are going to obtain the legal status we need to enter the land. God alone can give the wisdom that we need. There are probably missionaries who will read this who could give testimony that they obtained a visa when it was said that it could not be done. But God . . .”I am sure that many have missed it because they did not find James 1:5 in time. God is so infinitely wise that He can give what is needed at the right time so that the people with whom we deal are surprised at themselves when they realize what they have done in granting certain things to the people of God. Only by God wisdom could it have been done. Then finally,THE SPIRIT OF GLORY1 Peter 4:14, "If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified."As we are hated and reproached because of our identification with Christ and our love for Him, Peter says, “happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you.” And this likeness of Christ in suffering is a Divine enablement. God gives that special anointing so that the glow of God is upon the suffering saint, and the grace of God is manifest so that the observer sees that the reproached and suffering saint is getting power from another world. Manyhave been saved just by observing the suffering of the saints. How could this be? Because the spirit of glory and of God rests upon them. It is unexplainable but also undeniable. May the Lord bless these words to our hearts.Don't forget to visit HardwareOnTheSquare.com and find out more about our amazing service and the only Pizza Restaurant in San Augustine Texas.

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”The doctrine of the Holy Spirit is very controversial to say the least. I want to present a simple summary of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. It will not be extensive and the value of it to you will depend on your running the references and reading the verses for yourself. 1. The Holy Spirit comes as a result of the intercession of Jesus: “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter . . .” The work of the Holy Spirit is seen in the word “Comforter.” Jesus speaks of “another Comforter.” Jesus was their Comforter at the time He spoke this. So the Holy Spirit is to TAKE HIS PLACE once He departs after the resurrection to be our High Priest in the presence of God. +Today Jesus is THE ONE MEDIATOR between God and man (1 Tim. 2:5).2. The Holy Spirit is a GIFT. Note the words of Christ, “and he (The Father) shall give you another Comforter.” The word “give” translates “didomi” and means, “to give something to someone.” Roy Hession used to say, “The Holy Spirit is not a reward for our faithfulness but God's gift to our weakness.” That is so true. When I am willing to take the LOW place, the WEAK place, I am in a position to receive the work of the Holy Spirit in me. Too many of us try to CLIMB to find Him and He is always just out of reach. We need to crawl because there is where He is. 3. The Holy Spirit is as someone has said, “Heavens throne gift.” This is brought out in Acts 2:33: “Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father thepromise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.” Jesus “received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost.” This is in keeping with number one above where Jesus said, “I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter.” The Holy Spirit is a gift of the Father to the Son and the Son to His people. 4. The Holy Spirit is not new to the people of God. The coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost was to fulfill a special roll in this age. The Holy Spirit was active in creation (Gen. 1:2), strove with man about his need of salvation before the flood (Gen. 6:3), filled Old Testament believers for special work (Exo. 31:3; 35:31), the Holy Spirit was vexed at wrong actions in the O.T. (Isa. 63:10), the Holy Spirit indwelt Moses (Isa. 63:11). So indwelling is not exclusively New Testament.5. Since Pentecost the Holy Spirit comes into the life of the believer at salvation. Ephesians 1:13 says, “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.” THIS IS A DEFINITIVE STATEMENT STATING WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT COMES INTO THE BELIEVER. For the believer to pray for the COMING of the Holy Spirit (that is what many are doing when they pray for the baptism of the Holy Spirit) would be like me asking you over and over again to come into my home when you are standing right there at the time I am asking. Get this picture in your mind. You are standing in my living room. I stand there looking at you and I say, “Will you please come into my house? Please oh please come in!” You would get a little uneasy if I continued to ask you to do something when it is obvious that you had already done it. If the Holy Spirit was in the habit of speaking out loud I think He would say to someone who continued to pray for Him to come, “Hey, you dummy. Get up off you face and read Ephesians 1:13 and when you have read it, get your hands off the steering wheel of your life and let me take over. It is not my presence you need, it is my control.”6. The Holy Spirit is the Seal of our salvation (Eph. 1:13). He doesn't seal us, He IS the seal. The body of the believer is a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19-20).7. He that is joined to the Lord is one Spirit with Him (1 Cor. 6:17).8. The Holy Spirit seals us until the day of redemption (Eph. 4:30).9. The Holy Spirit is God's Earnest to us of our inheritance (Eph. 1:14). This is God's guarantee to us that He will finish what He began in us when He saved us.10. The Holy Spirit is grieved when we sin as Christians (Eph. 4:30). 11. We are to be filled with the Holy Spirit (Eph. 5:18). Filling can take place over and over again and should. Therefore, it is not wrong to pray for the filling of the Holy Spirit. 12. The Holy Spirit is a person and not a principle: The following can only be said of a person:1) He speaks and calls; Acts 13:2.2) He commands and permits; Acts 16:6-7.3) He leads; Rom 8:14.4) He instructs; John 16:13.5) He comforts; John 14:26.6) He intercedes; Rom 8:26.7) He bears witness; Rom 8:16.8) He can be grieved; Eph 4:30.Note: All these expressions can only be said of a living personal being.13. The Bible is given by the Inspiration of the Holy Spirit (2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:21).14. The Holy Spirit will never lead or inspire an action contrary to what HE HAS SAID IN THE WORD, i.e., barking like a dog, etc. This is the only safety we have against Satan. Satan is an imitator and will imitate the work of the Holy Spirit. How do we know the difference between the actions of the Holy Spirit and Satan? The answer is the Word of God. Satan will not stay with the Scriptures. If I have an experience that is in conflict with Scripture, you can be SURE that it did not come from the Holy Spirit. 15. The Holy Spirit indwells ALL BELIEVERS (Rom. 8:9).16. The Holy Spirit is in us to empower our testimony of God's saving grace in our lives as we witness (Acts 1:8).17. The Holy Spirit has a world-wide witness (John 16:7-11). The missionary always finds that the Holy Spirit beat him to the mission field. 18. The Holy Spirit is sent in Jesus Name (John 14:26). Just as Jesus was sent in His Father's name, the Holy Spirit is sent in the name of Jesus.19. The Holy Spirit is the power to “mortify the deeds of the body” thereby enabling the believer to live a holy life (Rom. 8:13).20. The Holy Spirit gives assurance to us that we are already God's children (Rom. 8:16).21. The Holy Spirit is our guide (Rom. 8:14).22. The Holy Spirit is the Lord (2 Cor. 3:17). Jesus so works through the Person of the Holy Spirit that they are used synonymously here. 23. The Holy Spirit can be quenched; 1 Thess. 5:19: “Quench not the Spirit.”24. The Holy Spirit is our Teacher (John 14:26;16:13). 25. The Holy Spirit produces the fruit of the Spirit in the life of the yielded believer (Gal. 22-23). 26. Walking in the Spirit is the only way to have victory over the flesh; Gal. 5:16-17).27. The Holy Spirit makes intercession for the believer (Rom. 8:26).28. The Holy Spirit leads us in worship (Rom. 8:15; Gal. 4:6). The term “Abba, Father” is very intimate. It is like a little boy saying, “Daddy, daddy.” The yearnings of the inner man to worship and adore God is caused by the indwelling Holy Spirit.29. Spirituality is the proper relation to the Holy Spirit just like salvation is a proper relation to the Lord Jesus (1 Cor. 2:14-15). 30. Regeneration is a work of the Holy Spirit (John 3:3; Titus 3:5). Salvation is a Spiritual birth and a new man comes into existence at this birth (2 Cor. 5:17; Eph. 4:24). 31. The Holy Spirit is the restrainer of evil and the One who keeps Antichrist from making his move to take over the world until God's time is right (2 Thess. 2:7). 32. The Holy Spirit is given to the believer until the day of redemption, i.e., the rapture or resurrection (Eph. 1:14; 4:30).This is not intended to be extensive but a simple doctrinal summary of the Holy Spirit as He operates in this age of grace. There are a lot of issues that I did not on purpose deal with since it is not the purpose of this meditation to argue over things that divide. All saved people are in the same family together. There are certain basic issues that we should be in agreement on. I hope this outline will help those of you who are interested in the study of the Holy Spirit. God bless you.Don't forget to visit HardwareOnTheSquare.com and find out more about our amazing service and the only Pizza Restaurant in San Augustine Texas.

He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”John says “He was in the world.” The verb “he was” is an imperfect tense referring to continuous action in the past. John did not use the aorist tense and gather up the whole history of his Lord's stay on earth in a point of time. He used the imperfect tense suggesting the continuous exposure of Jesus to the world over the period of His life and ministry. John adds, “and the world was made by him.” The Creator was in human flesh. The natural man never accepts the teaching of the Scriptures when they present truth like this. It gave the lost religious leaders of Jesus day a problem and it gives unsaved men the same problem today. One of the identifying marks of a cult is that they do not believe in the deity of Christ. Several will argue with you that they do. But they do not believe that Jesus is God incarnate in the flesh. They deceive by the use of their own private definitions to the old terms. This way they can say, “We believe in the virgin birth.” But they do not believe what true Christians believe when they say the same. The Athanasian creed says, “Furthermore it is necessary to everlasting salvation: that he also believe rightly [faithfully] in the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the right Faith is, that we believe and confess: that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and Man; God, of the Substance [essence] of the Father; begotten before the worlds: and Man, of the Substance [essence] of his Mother, born in the world. Perfect God: and perfect Man, of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting. Equal to the Father, as touching his Godhead: and inferior to the Father as touching his Manhood. Who although he be [is] God and Man; yet he is not two, but one Christ. One; not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh: but by taking [assumption] of the Manhood into God. One altogether; not by confusion of Substance [essence]: but by unity of Person. For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man: for God and Man is one Christ.”Man wants to believe in a god that is subject to his rational thought. A god of this kind is not god at all. Then John adds, “and the world knew him not.” The word “knew” (ginosko) according to the Linguistic Key means, “to know, to recognize, more than intellectual knowledge, rather ‘to be in right relation.'” This is a revelation of the spiritual bankruptcy of mankind. Think about the event of his birth and the things he did during his ministry that only God could do. Yet they did not recognize him. I have a problem that will illustrate. I will be looking for a book in my library and as I look for it on the shelves, it will be right before my eyes and I will not see it. Jesus was right before their eyes and to them he was just another man. This will give you a little glimpse of that to which the eternal Logos humbled himself. Next John says, “He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” The words “He came” (erchomai) means “to come from one place to another, and used both of persons arriving and of those returning.” Where did he come from? He came from heaven. He came from the bosom of the Father, and from the Holy City, and from the eternal now, outside of time separate from time, from a state of protection into which no foreign power could penetrate, and all the safety that that eternal place offers. He came from that place from which he spoke and the things we see and the things we cannot see suddenly appeared simply because he spoke the word. He came from that eternal place into time, and into a virgin womb, and into a stable, and into a hostile environment, and subjected himself as God manifested in the flesh to a world that didn't want him or recognize him. John said, “He came unto his own.” “His own” means his own nation; it means his own people whom he had raised up of the loins of Abraham and made of him a nation of people whom he had rescued as a slave people from Egypt and established them in the land of Canaan. “His own” refers to those he had given the Law and the Covenants. It refers to those to whom he had given the Scriptures. It refers to those beyond the borders of the nation of Israel because he was their creator to. “He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” The words “received” (paralambano) means “to accept or acknowledge one to be such as he professes to be.” They did not accept or acknowledge him for what he claimed to be. This means they believed him to be an imposter. They believed him to be a liar. They received him not.Next John says, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” The words “But as many as” identifies a group different from a world who rejected him and refused to receive him. This group identifies all the saved. John says, “to them gave he power to become the sons of God.” The words “gave he” is an aorist active indicative verb. The active voice means that he made the choice to do it. The word “power” (exousia) means “authority.” He had the right as God manifest in the flesh tomake such a gift. I'll never forget a preacher in Oklahoma City who had a man come forward in a service and give him a check for one million dollars. It got into the papers. They rejoiced in this great gift. But in a short time they realized this man was an imposter. He did not have the resources or the right to make such a gift. What a disappointment! What embarrassment that the preacher had fallen for such as this! Jesus did have the resources and the right to give those who received him the power to become the sons of God. Then John adds, “even to them that believe on his name.” This is what those who received did in the process of receiving him, they believe on his name. Every verb and verb form in this verse is aorist tense except this one. The verb “received” means that they did this at a point of time. The word “gave” is aorist tense and means that Jesus gave them at that point of time the power to become the sons of God. The words “to become” are an aorist infinitive and speak of a point of time in the past. But the word “believe” is a present active participle. It is saying that those who received him continue to believe. I have a part of my past that it not a good story to tell. It was a time when I got away from the Lord and did not serve him. This went on for a period of about eight years. But I can tell you that I never ceased to believe in Jesus. I knew I was wrong. But I never ceased to believe in Jesus. A believer will always be a believer. If you have faith in the circumstances of your religion, you may become an apostate to that faith. If you have your faith in your church, you may become an apostate to that church. If you have faith in Christ, there will never be a reason to disbelieve in him. Paul said in Roman 10:11, “For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.” The word “ashamed” means that one will never be embarrassed that he put his faith in Christ.May the Lord bless each of you.Don't forget to visit HardwareOnTheSquare.com and find out more about our amazing service and the only Pizza Restaurant in San Augustine Texas.

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:"This is an age old question. There are many who have given logical answers that make good sense. However there are three boundaries that we must not cross in answering this. First, is the boundary of God's wrath. Romans 1:18, "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;" God had stated His wrath against all mankind. Rom. 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” The bloodhounds of God's wrath are nipping at the heels of all the unsaved and He will not call off the dogs. If we tell a man that he will not have to face God's wrath because he never heard the gospel, we will put ourselves in opposition to the Word of God.The second great boundary is that God has declared that man is without excuse. Romans 1:20, "For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:" If God says he is without excuse, we would be doing violence to the Scriptures if we claim that he did have an excuse, that excuse being, he never heard the gospel. Many thinks because those who die without hearing the gospel will have another chance. He will not have another chance. The invisible things are clearly seen by the things that are seen. Inspiration goes so far as to say that, “His eternal power and Godhead,” are evident in God's revelation of Himself to man. The conclusion is that “they are without excuse.” This means they are completely responsible. Let me state it again. Man is responsible to God for his sins and will suffer the wrath of God if he never hears the gospel. Many cannot accept this. Their point is that God would not be fair to let a man go to hell without a chance.1. First of all he has a chance. Reread Romans one. While a man cannot be saved without the gospel, he can and does know there is a Creator and that in his breast he knows he is responsible and accountable for his sins. 2. Second, the truth of inward revelation. Romans 1:19, "Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them." The first step in salvation is to know there is a God and that we are accountable to Him for our sins. God has revealed Himself to the conscience. A missionary who goes to the field will find that God beat him there. He has already worked in the conscience of the unsaved. Some will respond and some won't.Now these things are not enough to save a man but they are enough to make a man consider the truth declared in these verses. The man who wants to be saved after having God reveal Himself in the conscience, God will send a missionary or a Christian with a testimony of the grace of God to him. He gives the one the gospel and in most cases he will be saved. This principle is applied in the case of Phillip and the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:27-39.I heard J. Vernon McGee say that there would not be a man come before God in the judgment that never heard the gospel, who would have responded in repentance and faith, if they had heard. I think that is a good conclusion. But none of this neutralizes our responsibility to preach the gospel to every creature. THE THIRD BOUNDARYThe third boundary that we must not cross in our preaching and teaching the Word of God is that, once a man dies, he will never have another chance. Hebrews 9:26-28, "For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation." If God says, “but after this the judgment,” He means exactly that.WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE THE CHURCHEzekiel 33:8-9, "When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul."It is our responsibility to preach the gospel to the entire world. It is not our responsibility to save them. Only the Lord Jesus can save. But it is our job to give them the good news. There is a harvest out there. It may be hard to find at times. On other occasions it will be easy. Adoniram Judson preached for 9 years before he had his first convert. But then the Lord led him to a tribe that was ready to hear and thousands were saved.May the Lord bless these words to our hearts.Don't forget to visit HardwareOnTheSquare.com and find out more about our amazing service and the only Pizza Restaurant in San Augustine Texas.

And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt: But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt. And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you. And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness. And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people."THOSE LED BY THE LORD ARE FIRST DELIVERED BY THE LORDExodus 13:16, "And it shall be for a token upon thine hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes: for by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt."The Jewish nation was to be constantly reminded of the deliverance from Egypt by the Lord. It was not by Israel's strength. They were not allowed to develop an army or become experts in the use of weapons. God was their weapon against all their foes. This is true of us: If we are to be led by the Lord, we must first of all be delivered by the Lord.THOSE LED BY THE LORD SHOULD UNWAVERINGLY FOLLOWThe Lord led Israel to the Red Sea. It was an area where you would not want to fight it out with the Egyptians. It seemed more like the Lord leading them into a trap. If they had not followed the Lord's guidance there would not have been the parting of the Red Sea. The Jews would long remember this experience. And the Egyptians would also. Pharaoh and his army were drowned to a man in their pursuit of the Children of Israel. The Lord does not make mistakes. Sometimes what He leads us to do does not make sense to the natural man. The fact that we have Him as our Guide gives us an unfair advantage. No one who runs up against God can win.THOSE LED BY THE LORD SHOULD FOLLOW IN AN ORDERLY MANNERExodus 13:17-18, "And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt: But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt."God is careful and wise concerning His chosen people. He did not want to engage them in war with the Philistines. This could discourage them and turn them back to Egypt. He could take better care of them in the wilderness. Sometimes the Lord leads us into a fight with the powers of darkness, and at other times He leads through the wilderness. His guidance is always right.THOSE LED BY THE LORD WILL WALK IN THE LIGHTExodus 13:21, "And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:"God in the pillar led them, sheltered them, satisfied them with bread, and in the wilderness darkness shone upon them. Jesus said in John 8:12, "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”THOSE LED BY THE LORD WILL BE PURSUED BY THE ENEMYExodus 14:8-9, "And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel: and the children of Israel went out with an high hand. But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baalzephon."Have you discovered that Satan is opposing the work of God in your life? He will not leave us alone. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5, "(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;" Paul speaks of “fighting the good fight of faith” (1 Timothy 6:12).It is not an easy road. Sometimes we are directly engaged with the enemy at other times we fight a different kind of war. But we alway win if we are His child.May the Lord bless these words to our hearts.Don't forget to visit HardwareOnTheSquare.com and find out more about our amazing service and the only Pizza Restaurant in San Augustine Texas.

The perfect tense represents completed action in the past that completed action having present results. The completed action in the past gathers up all that Jesus did in the plan of God from eternity past, including his incarnation and perfect life, his trial and crucifixion until the point in time where he said “It is finished.” Now at that point of time God is satisfied in and through the person of Christ for the sins of the world so that a finished salvation can be offered to an unsaved world through the preaching of the gospel. The passive voice means that he, as the subject, has been the one on whom redemption has depended, and all that justice demands as a penalty for sin has just been finished in him as man's substitute, i.e., he received the action of divine wrath and satisfied it completely so that he could say, “it is finished.”Robertson says in his word pictures: “A cry of victory in the hour of defeat like ‘nenikêka' in John +16:33"There are several words that are used in Scripture that are synonymous with salvation that are finished because of the truth that Jesus declared when he said, “It is finished.”If Justification is finished, the believer is no longer condemned. Justification removes one from the penalty of the law. He is therefore not condemned. Romans 8:1 says, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus. . . ” How could this verse say “there is therefore now no condemnation,” if justification had not been accomplished in such a way as to remove any possibility of change of status in the future? We have a finished salvation so that when we receive Christ by faith we enter into a relationship with God that removes the threat of future change. In other words sin in the life of a believer does not change God's mind about his justifying act. He chastens us because of sin but we remain participants in a finished salvation that needs nothing added and can have nothing subtracted. When Jesus said “It is finished” he meant it and it stands before God permanently without the chance of change. We are no long condemned. If Redemption is finished, the believer is no longer in bondage. Galatians 4:3-7 says, “Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” The word “bondage” in verse three is “douloo” which means “to make a slave of, to reduce to bondage.” It is a perfect passive participle which means that this slavery had been accomplished in the past and remained that way for those who had not been redeemed. The word “redeem” in verse five is “exagorazo” and means “to buy out of the slave market, to redeem by payment of a price to recover from the power of another, to ransom, buy off.” It is explained in these verse that this is what Jesus came to do. It is referring to the cross and when Jesus said, “It is finished” he meant that the price for redemption had at that point been paid in full. Before I was saved I was in bondage to sin. All one has to do to realize this is to attempt to live without sin. If you attempt to do that by using God's plumb line (The Law) you will find you are so crooked that a drunk man could not wobble enough to walk down beside your life. In John 8:34 Jesus answered them, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.” The word “servant” (doulos) is the same word and means slave. They had just denied in verse 33 having ever been in bondage to any man. It is amazing how blind unsaved people can be. They had been in bondage to Babylon and they were at the time in bondage to Rome. But Jesus is talking about a much greater bondage that this. It is bondage to sin. But when Jesus died on the cross he said, “It is finished,” and when he did he was declaring that the price has now been paid in full to set all the slaves free. If redemption is finished, the believer is no longer in bondage. If Reconciliation is finished, the believer is no longer an enemy. Romans 5:10 says, “For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.” Every unsaved man is an enemy of God. He can deny it all day. But God says the unsaved are enemies. If you are reading this and you are not a bornagain Christian, you may feel like this is a harsh statement. I just want to tell you that you will have to accept God's diagnosis and admit what he says is right or you will never be saved. God says you are an enemy. The word “enemy” in this verse is “echthros” and means “hated, odious, hateful, hostile, hating, and opposing another.” Have you ever seen yourself as a hater of God? You see, you can't hate his way without hating him. Jesus came to “reconcile” God and man. In Colossians 1:20-21 Paul says, “And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled.” When Jesus said, “It is finished” the way had been made for a sinner to be reconciled to God. Nothing else needed to be done. All that was needed for reconciliation to take place, Jesus had accomplished it, and declared it so in the words, “It is finished.”If Substitution is finished, the believer can be spoken of in the same way as the Substitute. If God accepted Jesus as my Substitute then all that Jesus is as my Substitute I am also. Paul says in Galatians 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” The Bible says, “The wages of sin is death.” This is what is required of the sinner for his sin. Jesus as my Substitute paid God for my sin by dying. Since God has accepted the Substitute, I am accepted in the person of my Substitute. Ephesians 2:5-6 says, “Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:” When Jesus said “It is finished” the Substitution was completed so that nothing needs to be added to his suffering and death to make it complete. Jesus, my Substitute is no longer on a cross but is rather on a throne. And what is said of my Substitute is also said of me. This is the reason verse six says, “And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” In our Substitute we are already in heaven. We have a finished salvation. Praise his holy name. We must worship at his feet.Don't forget to visit HardwareOnTheSquare.com and find out more about our amazing service and the only Pizza Restaurant in San Augustine Texas.

We are believers as a result of what we have heard. But the hearing of faith is more than just hearing. It is believing what we hear. This is true of the gospel message that brings us to Christ. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.” What about those who hear and don't believe? It is not just hearing the message and knowing it is from God. It is called “the hearing of faith.” Paul writes to the church at Thessalonica and goes over what happened there when he came and preached the gospel. He says in 1 Thess. 2:13: ”For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.” It was received by them as the Word of God. It worked effectively in those that believed. It illustrates the hearing of faith. Then there is the prospect of faith in Gal. 3:24: “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” Here Paul pictures the law of Moses as a schoolmaster that brings those under the law to Christ. One could never be justified by the law ( +2:16) he is only condemned by the law. But a condemned man is ready to listen to anything that will get him off death row. So the Law says, “I have done my job. I have justly condemned you. I have had no mercy. It is not in my makeup to have mercy. But there is one who has been successful in setting men free whom I have condemned.” Would that be good news to you if youhad been condemned and left on death row to await execution? This is the good news that is offered to every man. The words of this verse that say, “that we might be justified by faith.” This is the good news of the gospel. The words “might be justified” is an aorist passive subjunctive verb. The subjunctive mood is the mood of possibility. That means there is hope for the one condemned by the law even thought that condemnation left him on death row. The aorist tense is a point tense and it means that this justification is possible at some point in time in the future since it hasn't happened yet. It is possible. At what point of time? At the point that you believe. The words “that we might be justified by faith” give us the message of the point of time. This is the prospect of faith. Then there is the exercise of faith. Paul brings this out in chapter two and verse sixteen: “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” The exercise of faith is in the person of Christ. Our justification is based on his faith. He is the only one who had perfect faith in the Father. There was no fault in him including his perfect faith. We put our faith in him and as a result we are justified by the faith of Christ. Our faith is not in our faith it is in him and his faith. Most modern translations of the Bible do not translate this verse right. The King James Bible translates the Textus Receptus exactly as it is. “. . . even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ. . . .” I am convinced that the verbal inspiration of the Scriptures is always right and that God the Holy Spirit is the Author of this statement. If we were justified by our faith we would have something to boast about. But here we have a definitive statement concerning faith, it is the faith of Christ that justifies and again all the glory goes to him. Then we have the family of faith. Paul brings this out in chapter three and verse twenty six: “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.” The entrance into God's family is the same for all. Someone has said the ground is level at the cross. We are all the same. That is certainly true when it comes to faith. We must come as a child simply believing that Jesus is God's answer to our sins and that he had to die and that he was raised again the third day. Jesus said in Matthew 18:4, “ Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Man would like to come before God with something great to offer. But the rich and the poor, the brilliant and the ignorant, the cannibal and the moralist must all come the same way. All enter God's family and are children of God by faith in Christ. Then there is the life of faith. Paul says in chapter three and verse eleven: “But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.” This versesays two important things. First, no man is justified in the sight of God by keeping the law. That does not mean he cannot be justified in the sight of man. I have heard drunkards preached into heaven by the moralist who believe this man was good enough because he was a member of their organization (the Masons) and I happen to know that the man died because he drank himself to death. We are to live by faith. Not only are we to get into God's family by faith but we are to live by faith after we enter. There is no way to live by faith without the Bible being the very life of your life. Jesus said in John chapter six and verse sixty three, “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” No one lives by faith if he does not live in the Word of God. Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God. I do not mean to hurt anyone when I make statements like this. But the moralist needs to know that. It is faith and faith alone that justifies in the sight of God and if one does not live by faith then it is evident he didn't get in by faith. And if he didn't get into God's family by faith he will not go to heaven with God's family. Then there is the power of faith. Paul says in chapter three and verse fourteen: “That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” The promise of the Spirit is the promise of power. For this read Acts 1:8 and 2:39.Then there is the Source of faith. Paul says in Galatians chapter two verse twenty: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” It is living by the faith OF the Son of God. . .” He is the source of all true faith. Paul says, “The just shall live by faith.” Amen.

Since its release, he and his team travels extensively and utilizes every platform available, through book signings, radio station interviews, and other venues to share the message of the importance of integrity.
