Garnet Mackinder, Anne Wafula Strike & Shruti Saujani join Sue Anstiss to explore equality in sport. As we fight for gender equality in sport are we doing enough to ensure our approach is intersectional? What needs to change to ensure all women feel welcome in sport from grassroots participation to elite pathways & the boardroom. It's a topic that can be uncomfortable as people worry they might say the wrong thing or use the wrong language. It's not just a matter of asking ethnically diverse women to be the experts on all things inclusion - we all need to do our own research here. That said, we were thrilled to welcome this expert panel this podcast who all work in the D&I space and kindly agreed to help explore this topic with some lived experiences as they shared practical recommendations to help us all make sport more inclusive. Our four game changing guests were:Garner Mackinder - an Equality Lead at Sport England who played semi-professional rugby at Exeter Chiefs and has been capped by England 7s. Anne Wafula Strike - an extraordinary para-athlete who is also an author, inspirational speaker, disability rights campaigner and powerful advocate for the less fortunate in society - passionate about equality and the right of disabled people to be heard. Shruti Saujani - Engagement Lead for ED&I at the England and Wales Cricket Board having led the ECB's Dream Big Desi Women project. In her popular TEDTalk titled Teach Girls Bravery Not Perfection, Reshma Saujani, the founder of Girls Who Code asserts that we are raising our girls to be perfect, and we're raising our boys to be brave. Saujani says “I worry about our bravery deficit. The bravery deficit is why women are underrepresented in STEM, C-suites, boardrooms, Congress, and pretty much everywhere you look.” While I don't disagree that girls and women have been overly socialized to avoid risk, in this episode, I challenge assertions and oversimplifications that perpetuate a fix the women, fix the problem narrative. Sure. Let's talk about teaching girls and women to be braver, but let's ALSO talk about teaching boys and men to be more empathetic. Where is the complimentary TEDTalk to teach girls bravery, not perfection titled teach boys empathy, not aggression? This episode of the Advancing Women Podcast addresses the negative consequences of a workplace that disproportionately favors leadership traits like confidence and assertiveness when research shows traits like empathy and interpersonal sensitivity are as, if not more important. In the face of epic leadership failures, tyrannical leadership, and ethical scandals that have destroyed companies and lives, it's time to talk about how the workforce and what we value in leaders must change. Less fixing the women, more fixing the problem!   Previous Advancing Women Podcast Episodes Referenced in this Episode: Fear of Failure: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fear-of-failure/id1569849100?i=1000527184290 Tightrope Bias & The Likeability Dilemma: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/tightrope-bias-the-likeability-dilemma/id1569849100?i=1000570385546   For more about Dr. DeSimone and the Advancing Women Podcast https://advancingwomenpodcast.com/ https://www.instagram.com/advancingwomenpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/advancingwomenpodcast/   Resources/Reference: https://trainingindustry.com/articles/diversity-equity-and-inclusion/women-may-make-better-leaders-than-men-science-shows-feminine-leadership-qualities-that-drive-success/ https://news.usc.edu/30333/When-Stressed-Men-Charge-Ahead-Women-More-Cautious/ https://www.ig.com/en/news-and-trade-ideas/top-10-biggest-corporate-scandals-and-how-they-affected-share-pr-181101 https://www.scarymommy.com/instead-women-apologizing-men-apologize-more https://hbr.org/2020/04/7-leadership-lessons-men-can-learn-from-women

Women have been sold a mistruth—roll up your sleeves, smash the glass ceiling, and you too can have it all. Critics say the unspoken realities in this agreement are that many women must also do the majority of household work, childcare, and bear the burden of keeping this endless task list running in their minds. However, the inequity in unpaid work isn't news to anyone. It is well-rooted and widespread, benefiting a system that has always been designed for the benefit of men. Flash to 2021, when women left or were pushed out of the workforce en masse resulting in the lowest proportion of women in the labor force since the late 1980s. This downturn was matched by a decline in women's mental health and financial independence. Author, activist and lawyer Reshma Saujani is calling on corporations and their leaders to make vital changes to this toxic and worsening situation. Her rallying call: It's time to pay up. Her forthcoming book Pay Up: The Future of Women and Work outlines her four-step action plan to realize this change and serves as a field guide for women, empowering them to demand what they deserve. The sculpture was designed by Monica Guggisberg and Philip Baldwin for MSC Seashore and is located in the MSC Foundation Centre, rising from deck 5 to deck 8, surrounded by a mirror wall that proliferates the light and colours emanating from it, lit by a spotlight located in its base. The design uses the magical, fluid medium of glass to express the fluidity of the seas and everything in them, animal, vegetable and mineral, coral, fish, seaweed and oxygen. The immense depth and expanse of the sea, covering 71% of our world's surface, is contained in the imagery of the sculpture, in its great height and the density of its contents, as if it were the sea itself in a soaring prism of charged and moving constituents. Partly an image of Earth's lungs, partly an image of Earth's nutrition and partly an image of simple beauty, it symbolises the sea's indispensable role in our and our planet's wellbeing. We are dependent upon it. It is not dependent upon us.Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines' new flagship Bolette makes inaugural sailing from SouthamptonFred. Imagine if you lived without the fear of not being good enough. If you didn't care how your life looked on Instagram, or worry about what total strangers thought of you. Imagine if you could let go of the guilt, and stop beating yourself up for tiny mistakes. What if, in every decision you faced, you took the bolder path? That’s the mission of our latest guest, Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code and author of Brave, Not Perfect: Fear Less, Fail More, and Live Bolder. Too many of us feel crushed under the weight of our own expectations. We run ourselves ragged trying to please everyone, all the time. We lose sleep ruminating about whether we may have offended someone, pass up opportunities that take us out of our comfort zones, and avoid rejection at all costs. There's a reason we act this way, Saujani says. “As girls, we were taught to play it safe. Well-meaning parents and teachers praised us for being quiet and polite, urged us to be careful so we didn't get hurt, and steered us to activities at which we could shine.” By choosing bravery over perfection, girls can find the power to claim their voice, to leave behind what makes them unhappy, and go for the things they genuinely, passionately want. In Brave, Not Perfect, Saujani shares powerful insights and practices to help us let go of our need for perfection and make bravery a lifelong habit. By being brave, not perfect, we can all become the authors of our biggest, boldest, and most joyful life. Have a money question? Email me here. Please leave us a rating or review in Apple Podcasts. Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code, joins host Sophia Amoruso to discuss her new book, Brave, Not Perfect: Fear Less, Fail More, And Live Bolder. In it, Saujani argues that there's a stark, cultural difference in how we are raising boys and girls to approach risk-taking and failure. As in, boys are taught to embrace risk and see failure as inevitable while girls are taught to strive for perfection and to lean toward what they're good at. And it's in that quest for perfection that makes it especially challenging for women to veer from their comfort zone. We come to see failure, Saujani tells Sophia, as a thing to avoid at all costs. The solution? Approach life and your career with a mindset focused on bravery—not perfection. Listen in to hear Saujani recount what it’s like to have your dad deal with trolls online, how we can overcome the pitfalls of living in a success-driven culture, and much more. Reshma Saujani committed her first act of bravery at the age of 33 when she ran for political office in New York. She lost – badly. Instead of being defeated by it, she was set free… she discovered her bravery muscle and started to exercise it more. For example, she set up an NGO about coding when she knew nothing about start-ups – or coding. Girls Who Code is a US non-profit organization working to close the gender gap in technology and change the image of what a programmer looks like. Reshma’s TED talk, "Teach girls, bravery not perfection," has more than four million views and sparked a national conversation about how we’re raising our girls. This led her to write her 3rd book "Brave, Not Perfect" During our chat we discussed society’s impact on girls and what we could do differently. I asked Reshma for practical tools on how we ourselves could be braver. In fact, this was a great follow-on to the last When Women Win episode with Najla Al Midfa, which explored resilience: how can you build resilience unless you’re allowed to fail? And finally, we talked about coding and how it cultivates bravery in girls and gives them permission to be less than perfect. How many of us go crazy trying to do it all, and do it all perfectly? How many obsess over tiny errors and avoid taking on big opportunities or challenges for fear of failing or embarrassing ourselves? Why is failure, big or small, not seen as a viable option for so many of us? Girls Who Code CEO Reshma Saujani's popular TED Talk called for the need to teach bravery, not perfection, especially for women constantly finding themselves under enormous amounts of pressure to perform. In her new book, Brave, Not Perfect, Saujani asks us to rethink what our goals are supposed to look like and instead live life boldly, assuring us that it is more powerful to find something unexpected in the mistakes than it is to play it safe. Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code, is on a mission to get more young women into computer science. She says the problem isn't lack of interest. Her non-profit organization has trained thousands of girls to code, and the ranks of female science and engineering graduates continue to grow. And yet men still dominate the tech industry. Saujani believes companies can certainly do more to promote diversity. But she also wants girls and women to stop letting perfectionism hold them back from volunteering for the most challenging tasks and jobs. She is the author of the book "Brave, Not Perfect: Fear Less, Fail More, and Live Bolder."

It’s no shock to anyone—there is a gender disparity problem in the computer science world. The computing industry’s rate of job creation in the United States may be three times that of other industries, but the number of females attaining computer science degrees is falling, as U.S. News reports: “In 1984, 37 percent of computer science majors were women, but by 2014, that number had dropped to 18 percent.” However, Reshma Saujani doesn’t think the issues merely lie in offering girls more opportunities to learn. Rather, it’s a problem of culture and consistency. “A girl doing an ‘hour of code’ is not going to have an epiphany that is going to convert her,” she tells EdSurge. Saujani, a former lawyer and the CEO/founder of Girls Who Code in 2012, has strong beliefs about how the political landscape will and should affect computer science education, as well as the biggest hurdles facing those hoping to adequately educate girls on coding. Luckily, EdSurge got the opportunity to sit down with her right before her closing keynote at the 2017 ISTE conference in San Antonio, Texas.
