The idea behind Mobility for Africa was born out of frustration. Having worked in the development sector in Africa and Asia for more than two decades, Shantha Bloemen was dismayed by the lack of mobility options available, especially for women. Shantha is the founder and managing director of Mobility for Africa, a social enterprise that is providing electric mobility to rural communities in Zimbabwe. Shantha’s work is proof that investing a little money in sustainable mobility is a long lasting solution. This podcast is by Expo Live, produced by Kerning Cultures Network.
There are so many ways to use AI technology in retail to improve customer experience, optimise supply chains and reduce waste. Yet it seems to me that most innovations in the retail industry over the last 30 years have focused on automating labour-intensive tasks. In my personal opinion, the retail customer experience has not improved markedly in my lifetime, and in some cases, it has gotten worse. Anyone who's ever interacted with a self-checkout machine will know what I mean. So, what is next for the retail industry and what can technology and data science do to improve efficiency and customer experience across the many disparate parts of retailing? To answer these questions, I recently spoke to Shantha Mohan who is a true expert in the field. Shantha is currently an Executive in Residence at the Integrated Innovation Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, where she co-delivers courses, contributes to curriculum design, and mentors students in their projects and practicums. Shantha is also a co-founder and long-time executive of Retail Solutions Inc (RSi) where she ran the company's worldwide product Development team that built the products & services which made the company a leader in retail analytics solutions used by consumer packaged goods companies and retailers across the globe. She holds a PhD in Operations Management and a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication Engineering. In this episode of Leaders of Analytics, we discuss: The applications of AI in retail with the most potential, for online and in-store shopping respectively The differences between retail in developed and developing countries and how AI must be customised for different markets across the globe. The typical consequences of items being out of stock and how can AI and other relevant technologies help combat out-of-stock problems. Whether AI in retail will increase or diminish the ability for small retailers to compete, and much more.

Most of us can identify the qualities that make a good public sector leader, but what turns a good leader into a great one? In particular, what can we learn from other leaders around us to help take advantage of opportunities and deliver greater services to the public? As part of our four-part podcast miniseries with the National Leadership Centre (NLC), Public Sector Executive is delving deeper into what helps make a great leader'.Joining host Matt Roberts on the podcast, Parveen Yaqoob, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Reading and Shantha Dickinson, Deputy Chief Fire Officer, discuss their leadership journeys and the experiences that helped propel them forward in their careers. For Parveen, there was one particular moment which represented a turning point in her career progression.“About five or six years ago, I was asked to take part in a STEM event for Year 9 girls. I was one of six role models, women representing different areas in STEM, and at the start of the event the facilitator asked each of us to stand up and explain why we were there. I stood up and found myself saying that there weren't enough women in senior positions in universities and I wanted to see change.“As soon as the words were out of my mouth, it just hit me like a thunderbolt. I realised I couldn't say something like that, and yet have no intention of doing anything about it.”That drove Parveen to make the most of opportunities, and to help guide and support others to come through too. But equally, it also taught her to take pride in her achievements and recognise the success she had achieved in her career, and how she could then turn that into a shareable experience for others. There are many different ways that a leader can go from having a good career to a great one, with guests Parveen and Shantha's very different experiences demonstrating as much, but one thing comes across immediately clear: the growth of a great leader doesn't just benefit themselves, but it benefits everyone across their organisation and in the case of the NLC Accelerate delegates, it benefits the recipients of the public service their organisations provideListen to the full discussions with Shantha and Parveen and discover what truly took them to that next stage of personal, professional, and collaborative success, and how the NLC Accelerate Programme has impacted their leadership journeys. The NLC Accelerate Programme brings together 20 high-performing ethnic minority leaders from across public services, who are currently working at Deputy CEO level and aiming to become CEO-level leaders within their respective fields.Applications for the new 2021/22 cohort of the NLC Accelerate are open until September 24, 2021. Those keen to take part in this year's course can register their interest here.

“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” — Arthur Ashe In the wake of nation-wide protests that resulted from the death of an African American man at the knee of white police officers, it is clear racism is deeply ingrained in the fabric of our county. However, it is also clear that many Americans want to confront racism in order to become a nation that values ALL of its citizens regardless of race. Though conversations around racism are difficult, they are necessary if we want to make a significant impact. So, how can teachers start having conversations about racism within their building? Dr. Shantha Smith is an Equity and Excellence Coordinator and Instructional Lead Educator in Arlington, VA, where she works to transform school culture. She is dedicated to making her school a more equitable learning environment for all students by challenging staff to reflect on how their practice is informed by implicit bias and the impact it makes on students of color. In this episode, I have the pleasure to learn how Dr. Smith opens these conversations with colleagues which challenges them to think in ways that take them, beyond the curriculum. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/beyondthecurriculum/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/beyondthecurriculum/support
On Wednesday we celebrated Earth Day, a day that has been celebrated every year since 1970 on April 22nd. It’s a day for raising awareness of human activity’s negative impact upon the earth and is a day for political action and civic participation as well. It’s the culmination of an entire month of focus on the environment, and for people of faith, it has a special significance as a day of reverence for God’s creating and sustaining work. Creation Justice Ministries has committed itself to its theme for 2020, “The Fierce Urgency of Now.” We know we have ten years to take action to avert the most catastrophic damage to the life-sustaining climate God blessed us with, and entrusted to our care. This is Earth Month, and my guest is the executive director of Creation Justice Ministries, Shantha Ready Alonso. Shantha is a tireless advocate among faith leaders in the US, and today she will reinforce just how fiercely urgent our collective action on behalf of the planet is.

Shantha joins Eric and Cobus to discuss China’s new aid agenda in Africa and how entire philosophy about aid & development is radically different from that of Western countries and international non-governmental organizations like the World Bank and IMF.
