Mitsugu Sasaki, an artisan based in Iwadeyama, Miyagi, Japan, is the visionary founder of SASAKI YOHINTEN, a celebrated business crafting hand-sewn clothing from vintage textiles since 2014. Renowned for his mastery of traditional Japanese sashiko and boro techniques, he transforms century-old European linens and Japanese fabrics from the Edo to Showa eras into unique, sustainable garments that blend cultural heritage with global influences. After running a vintage clothing store in Tokyo's Shimokitazawa from 2009 to 2014 and overcoming a 2017 fire that destroyed his physical shop, Sasaki transitioned to an online model, earning international acclaim, including a 2024 Vogue Japan feature where Angelina Jolie dubbed him “Boro Mitsugu.” His commitment to preserving craftsmanship, evident in exhibitions across France, the UK, China, and New York, and his clothing's presence at Atelier Jolie, underscores his profound impact on sustainable fashion.

Episode 30: This week is the fourth and final part of our Tokyo Deep Cuts series, and in the spirit of leaving (some of)the best till last, we cruise the funkier streets of Kichijoji to take in Scratch and Sometime, before heading back via Shimokitazawa to call on Lady Jane. We head out to the suburbs to finish up in the incredibly enigmatic Genius, and hear about the owner’s legendary record collection. We're back! After an almost 2 month hiatus, Art School Taught Me returns with Season 2 of Conversations with Creatives here in Manila. On this episode we sit down with aspiring photographer and filmmaker, Hix. We discuss her views on film vs. digital photography, as well as her recent shift into filmmaking. Our conversation covers most aspects of production from writing to directing to producing. Aside from Pinterest, she reveals that random word generators are often sources of inspiration when it comes to conceptualizing ideas to write about, which was something that took me by surprise. Hix also talks about some of her past projects, and the importance of being sincere with your art. Vulnerability is a big aspect of her work and you can feel it when you watch her films. Towards the latter half of the episode we discuss the LGBTQ+ community here in the Philippines and what needs to happen in order to make the future a safer and more accepting place for everyone. Before wrapping up the episode, we talk briefly about Japan and how cool Daikanyama and Shimokitazawa are. As well as how sketchy Minami-Senju can sometimes be. I asked Hix about places in Japan that she finds special to which she responded with Yamanashi prefecture, her dad's province. As per usual, the environmental noise is above what it should be for a podcast. I'm a bit rusty from the season break but hopefully we can get back into the swing of things soon. Thanks for listening!

On this episode, join me as we scratch the surface of the Tokyo indie rock scene. I sat down with Kento for a blitzkrieg-paced bop of an episode. I dove deep into his musical inspirations, his experience living and bringing anarchy in the uk and finally coming full circle back to the Tokyo Indie underground. Kento's come-as-you-are demeanor reflects his musical journey which is still growing. Although the Tokyo scene has a clear and present division within their community, it undoubtedly shares the same unknown pleasures for rock and roll. Case in point, Kento and I try to figure out two highly influential neighborhoods of Koenji and Shimokitazawa: great outlets for starving artists yet they have completely different music vibes. Kento’s story can be very familiar or just new noise but it’s definitely not the path of the norm in Japan. Hope you enjoy! PS. Can you name all these punk band references of my youth? You can check out Kento's band by searching on Youtube and Soundcloud: https://www.youtube.com/user/kentiemod https://soundcloud.com/kentie_funk Also check out these clubs and see for yourself about local Tokyo underground indie rock scene: Club UFO (Koenji) : https://www.ufoclub.jp Club Ichibee (Kichijoji) : http://www.ichibee.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/madeinjapanpodcast/message

Chances are you’re spending some time in Tokyo outside the Parks, so you need recommendations on where to go. Since we both live in Japan, we have a few places we love to frequent. Chris’ places include Nakano Broadway, Shimokitazawa, Mt. Takao, Kichijoji, and Akihabara (Akiba Cultural Zone, Kotobukiya, Gachapon Theater, Mall Near Station). Trish’s places include Sugamo, Aki-Oka Artisan & mAAch ecute Kanda Manseibashi, Ginza, Mori Art Museum in Roppongi Hills, and Shibuya. To stay with the Tokyo-theme, our park tip this week is about the “day passes” you are able to buy for both the JR Trains and Tokyo Metro. We're on the road, this time to Japan which is a cratedigger's version of heaven, without all that annoying harp music. We visit Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima for an unprecedented record roadtrip extravaganza plus we speak to two great shops, Best Sounds in Shimokitazawa in Tokyo and Hitozoku Records in Kyoto! If you like records, just starting a collection or are an uber-nerd with a house-full of vinyl, this is the podcast for you.
