Episode 51! Today I speak to the very lovely Sophie Gray, originally from the UK, now based on SA's Fleurieu Peninsula.Sophie generously shares with us her reality of a shock diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia at 29, which subsequently resulted in a lifesaving stem cell transplant. While trapped in a hospital ward for over a month, Sophie looked out of the hospital windows at the countryside surrounding Adelaide, wishing she were out exploring. Indeed nature and movement have formed a major part of Sophie's recovery, and without having ever gone on a multiday hike before, Sophie embarked on a through hike of the 1200km Heysen Trail as part of her journey. Now working as a yoga teacher, we cover a range of topics including:the magic of yoga, meditation and breathworkmovement as medicinehow you may be able to make a difference to someone else's life through the stem cell registrySophie's own Yoga after Cancer course creationhiking the 1200km Heysen Trail (with a few days left to complete, thanks to a sprained ankle along the way!)Camel trekking through the desertSophie references the organisations Strength to Give and Ur the Cure.We also mention Sophie Matterson's book, The Crossing. How's your day been today? No really, has it gone well or has today just not been your day? If today has just not been going the way you'd like, this episode is for you. Nacho Day (try saying it like not your day) is all about those frustrating and disheartening days where the world might not be ending, but that leave you in a bad mood. In this episode, Petra visits Sophie Gray of Destitute Gourmet and the two of them make nachos together in Sophie's kitchen. The recipe they follow is one that Sophie put together specifically for families who receive food from the Good Works Trust Food Bank, where Sophie is the General Manager. The Sunday Sanctuary team loves it when Hollywood releases a movie which perfectly fits the topic of an upcoming episode. To kick off her conversation with Rev Frank Ritchie, Petra plays him a section of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Frank lets Petra in on what he does for himself on bad days and how prayer plays a part in how he shows himself some grace. If you enjoyed this episode, we'd love it if you left us a 5 star rating. Feel free to write a short review if you feel so inclined! As always though, the most helpful thing you can do is spread the word among friends and whānau! When has food felt like love to you? And what food feels like love for you? Is it your favourite soup ready on the stove upon your return to your childhood home? A carrot cake couriered to you for your birthday? Food is so much more than physical sustenance. It is a bridge between cultures, a holder of memories and an expression of love for those we care about. In this episode, Petra speaks with mate Pio Terei and Destitute Gourmet's Sophie Gray about their thoughts on this passion subject of theirs, and we hear plenty of delicious stories along the way. (59:05) Emily and Sophie meet to discuss Sophie's journey from fitness influencer to entrepreneur and mental health advocate. Sophie pulls back the curtain to explain what was really going on in her life through her decade-long journey. Here are some rules I try to abide by when looking for budget-friendly meals· Only use what's in season· Shop with a list but stay open to a bargain· Ties in with above, don't stick to ingredients if they're expensive, substitute for something cheaper eg. jars of capsicum/peppers instead of fresh, rump steak instead of sirloin or cheaper yet, learn how to cook well with eggs or pulses for your protein, use sour cream / crème fraiche instead of cheese in cooking· Spices are your friend for cooking on a budget - they pack a punch for very little expense· Avoid semi or fully prepared meals – they're expensive whichever way you look at it· When shopping compare the per gram cost – you'll be surprised that larger portions are not always cheaper (mayo is a good example of this!)· Beef up curries / casseroles with vegetables (carrots / potatoes / onions / pumpkin / spinach) – good for the body and the wallet· Shop to the theme of “You can't always get what you want”· The Destitute Gourmet, Sophie Gray, has 3 principles for saving $$: Plan ahead, Eat Healthy, Eek out the luxuries www.destitutegourmet.co.nz – great website· Practice or LEARN to cook well – that way your health and your food bill is in your handsMy favourite 3 budget meals:1. 3 meals from one roast chicken; a roast, then use some meat for sandwiches or tacos / make soup with the carcass2. Lasagne made with lentils instead of meat and sour cream/cream fraiche instead of cheese on top3. Rosemary & potato/pumpkin frittataLISTEN ABOVE

This week's episode is featuring Sophie Gray, founder of DiveThru!Sophie Gray is the founder of DiveThru, a mental wellness company that helps you DiveThru what you go thru. They work with mental health professionals to create resources that help you to take charge of your mental wellbeing.Sophie shares her work with an audience of over 400,000 through her personal social channels. Her work has been featured in Cosmopolitan, People, Women's Health, Refinery29, Marie Claire, Yahoo, Shape, Self, and many more.Sophie had built an audience of over 500,000 people through her social channels where she regularly talked about physical wellness. In reality? Her mental health was struggling. She was continually pretending to be fine when she was, in fact, very much not fine.Flash forward, Sophie was traveling for work, and her mental health had had enough. Upon boarding a connecting flight, her body and mind revolted and threw her into a full on panic attack. The end result? A 38 hour drive home… 3200 kilometers to be exact. After arriving home from her cross country drive, she realized she could no longer pretend things were fine and embarked on a journey that involved a whole lot of crying, journaling, therapy and self-realizations.After finding stable ground, Sophie began sharing her experience with her audience. She was both comforted and upset to learn that so many people felt the same as she did. She also realized quickly that there wasn't a place where people could discuss their experiences and learn about themselves at the same time. Additionally, she saw that mental health support often came (and continues to come) with a high price tag or academic terminology that gets in the way of accessing help.Because of this and a desire to prevent others from feeling like they were going to shit their pants and throw up at the same time, Sophie began building DiveThru. We talk about: - Transitioning from the fitness industry to the mental health field - Going from a solopreneur to building a team with DiveThru- Advice for anyone struggling with mental health right now- Challenges she's overcome and fundraising through the pandemic - Dealing with self-doubt as a business owner - How she takes care of her mental health while running a business & advice for other entrepreneurs And much more!Sophie also answers some listener questions and a quick rapid-fire question round! Trigger Warning: Self-Harm This week on The Truth Doctor Podcast, founder of DiveThru, Sophie Gray joins Dr. Tracy to discuss anything and everything about Sophie’s life and journey. In the episode, Sophie discusses the extreme bullying she faced and how she coped with that trauma by closing herself off and creating a persona that wasn't authentic to her. Sophie says that she then engaged in self-harm and became a bully herself. From there, Sophie started focusing on how others perceived her and how she looked externally. During this experience, she built a large social media audience. One day, Sophie had a panic attack on an airplane and resulted in a drive across the country. She knew that she finally had to address her mental health – something she had been putting off for some time. Then she began learning about actually tuning into herself and listening to her needs rather than pretending she was okay when she wasn’t. Now, she’s the founder of DiveThru and works with wonderful people like Dr. Tracy to spread mental health education. Please NOTE: This podcast is not therapy, clinical advice or medical advice. The idea for Sophie James Wine was a seed planted on Sophie and James Gray's first date, even though they didn't realize it. That night as James discussed his dream of owning a ranch, moving to the boonies, and creating an off-the-grid community, Sophie fell in love with the idea and him, too.Little did they know that nearly a decade later, Sophie would have made an extreme career switch from scientist to co-founder (with James) of a wine company and club with a miles-long waiting list—oh, and that they'd also be married with two children.Quitting a promising career in science and turning down a coveted job at Stanford may have sounded insane at the time, but as you'll discover in the podcast, the risk was most definitely worth it.The path was not easy and definitely not straightforward, but Sophie's grateful that she followed advice she'd recently heard and couldn't stop thinking about: that to accomplish extraordinary things requires extraordinary risk.Sophie James Wine on InstagramLundberg DesignShelter Co.SouvlaLord StanleyKendra SmootMarigold FlowersProp 71Listen below, and please send feedback or interview suggestions to kp@meanmagazine.com!Support the show (https://patreon.com/meanmagazine)
Sophie Gray, social media content curator, entrepreneur and founder of the DiveThru mental well-being app, knows firsthand that you don't need followers to be valid. Sophie had more than 400k followers as a fitness influencer and was making great money selling E-books and courses, but knew she needed to honor her authentic self and be a voice for responsibility and reality. She joins the Inner Circle today to share what she has learned managing the crazy world of social media, her rock bottom moments and favorite self-care tools. She also discusses both the challenges and opportunities she sees for the future of social media, and why it's more than okay if all you are doing is laying at home, being cozy and eating crackers and hummus. What You'll Hear In This Episode: Sophie's rise in fame as a social media star, and what it was like in the space before Instagram really blew up and became the platform it is today. Ways Sophie grew her own audience including shout outs and audience swapping, both practices that aren't done as organically on Instagram today. The behind the scenes account of what it was like to grow quickly as a social media star and make a lucrative career from selling workout programs and E-books. Sophie started her Instagram account as a modeling portfolio and would share everything from workouts, fitness regimen tips, to dieting tips. She always had a message of self-love and acceptance, it was just under the platform of working out and fitness. When things shifted for Sophie, and what the repercussions were when she decided she wanted to instead focus more on mindfulness, true connection, and authenticity. Although Sophie was on the path of stardom and rubbing elbows with the best in her industry, she had extreme anxiety and panic, so much so that it limited her from engaging in everyday activity and really being in the present moment. The dark side of Sophie's rock bottom moments, and how it now gives her that extra ability to connect with those who struggle with self-harm. How journaling became an extremely valuable tool for Sophie to turn towards her feelings and engage in self-care. Why Sophie lost 70k followers when she started shifting her content from fitness to more mental health, and why she was completely okay with it. Why Sophie created the DiveThru app, what exactly it provides, and why guided introspection can help support your journaling “dives”. Quotes: “People that blew up on the internet weren't the popular ones.” “I allowed myself to experience the feelings that I had been so desperately shoving down.” “I was betraying myself in many ways, and I had to build up that trust.” “We idolize people on social media. We put them on a pedestal, and it is negative for both parties.” “Maybe some people want to be on that pedestal and have that separation. I don't.” Mentioned: Sophie Gray @divethru_ mindbodygreen Self Magazine The Power of Now lululemon Ambassador Program Journey Into the Inner Circle: Carrie Doll @CarrieADoll – Twitter @carriedollconsulting – Instagram Carrie Doll – Facebook Please rate, review and follow the podcast!
