Welcome to the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast! In this episode, Jennifer has an authentic and vulnerable conversation with one of her best friends & fellow CEO Dr. Stefani Reinold. They discuss what it's like to have a vision that is bigger than your current reality. They chat about how your enneagram and your zone of genius can affect you as a business owner and share valuable insights on embracing change, managing burnout, and using jealousy as a guide. Join the conversation as they discuss: Embrace Your Zone of Genius: Recognize your unique strengths, skills, and personality traits. Lean into them to make a positive impact in your career and find fulfillment. Navigate Career Transitions: Understand that it's okay not to have a clear vision for your career path. Embrace change, pivot when necessary, and honor the season of life you're in. Manage Burnout: Acknowledge burnout in different ways it can show up. It's essential to live your life as a business owner and make time to take care of yourself, even when it feels impossible. Use Jealousy as a Guide: Jealousy isn't necessarily negative. It can provide insights into your desires and aspirations. Reflect on why you feel jealous and what it reveals about your own goals. Build a Supportive Network: Surround yourself with people and environments that lift you up and offer diverse perspectives. Candy is EVERYWHERE. Seems like October rolls around and the candy doesn't leave until January. But, then it only stays gone until February when Valentine's candy shows up, which rolls right into Easter candy time. How do we handle ALL the candy? How do we handle it with our children? How do we handle it with ourselves? What do you do if you feel like you can't "trust yourself" around candy? How do you keep your kids from having a disordered relationship with candy? All of these questions and more are what we tackle in today's episode! Dr. Stefani Reinold is a psychiatrist and ED specialist who has worked with more than a thousand women and girls to help them find a healthier relationship with food and eating. You will be SHOCKED by her recommendations in today's episode-but I encourage you to listen the whole way through! Studies show that allowing your kids UNRESTRICTED access to candy MAY be the healthiest way to help them learn to regulate themselves around sugar and may help them not develop disordered eating behaviors later in life. But how is it his even possible? Today Stefani and I talk about: How do we help our kids have a healthy relationship with candy? (One where they won't binge every time they get some)! How can we help ourselves have a healthy relationship with candy? Is there a trick to not eating ALL the candy? What to do if you and your spouse don't agree on how to handle candy and sweets. How sugar may not be the most dangerous thing for your child's health . . . This is a must listen episode - I hope you'll share with a friend. Speaking to patients about their weight can be challenging as this often emotionally charged and multifactorial. Issues with body image, emotional eating, confusing and contradictory information about what, when and how to eat, and as one patient told me, you don’t have to smoke to live, but you have to eat to live. Her aim is to help people to have a healthier relationship with food and to untangle the complicated knot that surrounds food. We discuss her current podcast and her online journey, which included previously advocating for a specific way of eating, which she now believes is part of the problem. She also discusses her own interactions with the healthcare system that she found triggering regarding her weight. She teaches us effective ways to start the conversation, if at all, about eating habits, and how she believes that BMI is not an accurate measure of one’s health. I’m so excited to finally bring you an episode with Stefani Reinold. She is one of my best business friends. We have had many different versions of this conversation privately, and we kept saying, “We should record this!” because we knew that it could be helpful to others as we are all processing our own version of the new normal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Stefani brings so much to this conversation -- she has her MD, a background in psychiatry, and is now a therapeutic provider. Many dietitians don't have therapeutic training unless they’re in the eating disorder field and are receiving their own supervision and training. This conversation will be very helpful to so many people as we continue to process our own thoughts, feelings, and emotions around the COVID-19 crisis and try to determine how to best move forward while also taking care of ourselves (that’s number one!), our families, our business and clients, and all of the new responsibilities that many of us now have. Some of the topics discussed include: Processing our experiences (and an explanation of what “processing” actually means!) Handling outside pressure and feeling guilty for taking a break Setting boundaries that honor our values The importance of supervision for clinicians For more information, visit https://www.pursuingprivatepractice.com/37

Stefani Reinold is a board-certified psychiatrist, maternal mental health expert, and founder of Not the Typical Mom, a lifestyle brand dedicated to helping moms escape the stereotypes, abolish mother guilt, and live their own authentic mom lives. Out of her own suffering from postpartum depression and losing herself as a new mother, she decided to ditch the details of life and reconnect with the most important part of herself, and now helps fellow mothers do the same! Whether through individual patient care, online coaching, podcasting or public speaking, Stefani encourages mothers to escape the stereotypes, find their hearts, and embrace their real selves so that they can kill it in life, love and business. Episode highlights Dr. Reinold’s own experience of motherhood including her experience of postpartum depression. The loss of control over our body and life during pregnancy including weight gain during pregnancy. Dr. Reinold’s intention not to put on extra weight after her daughter was born and her history with an eating disorder earlier in life. Exhaustion during pregnancy. Dr. Reinold treated motherhood as another thing on her to-do list. Dr. Reinold shares the fact there is not textbook case of postpartum depression. Dr. Reinold’s change of relationship with her husband once her daughter arrived. Dr. Reinold’s experience of feeling like she was a failure as a mother. The link between Dr. Reinold’s feelings of body dissatisfaction and postpartum depression. The lack of social support in Dr. Reinold’s life. The fact that nobody validated Dr. Reinold’s struggles - passing it off as “normal” rather than validating her lived experience - the emotional pain. The first month postpartum is the most challenging but the 3-6 month period tends to be the most challenging time. As high achieving women, we tend to think that we can do it all on our own. Saying I am here to support you opens the door to someone who may be struggling - it opens the crack which slowly over time starts to open up where people can state their needs to that person. Who to reach out to if you feel you need support. What is “normal” - better phrase is “some of your symptoms make perfect sense”. Diet culture and how new mothers can be particularly vulnerable to this. Time limit - if don’t get body back within certain time period. Dieting in postpartum is not normal - we should be eating a lot more in postpartum. Dr. Reinold disliked the feeling of hunger and tried to restrict her calories and this impacted her breastfeeding her daughter. This then fed her feelings of failure - guilt and shame. Dieting was seen as something Dr. Reinold could do “right”. How Dr. Reinold placed so much worth on what she looked like - now she looks at what is healthy weight for her body. Studies looking at mental health and correlation with body dysmorphia. Shift in body aesthetics and hormonal changes - interesting time for many women. Shame that we can’t appreciate all of the changes in the postpartum period. We are grieving loss of our former body and our pre-baby life that we had. We can consider what our new body has been able to give us which our pre-baby life was not able to give us. The extent to which pregnancy depletes us physically, mentally and emotionally. Becoming a mother is the most profound change you will ever go through in life but it is not given the acknowledgement it deserves. Favourite food: Pizza! What does your body want to weigh? Have you heard of set point theory and wonder what it means for you and your body? Will it always look the way it does now? Or will it get smaller or larger? Listen to this latest episode of Love Food with special guest Stefani Reinold MD from the It's Not About the Food Podcast. Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds. This episode is brought to you by my courses: PCOS and Food Peace and Dietitians PCOS and Food Peace. You CAN make peace with food even with PCOS and I want to show you how. This episode's Dear Food letter: Dear Food, I began my intuitive eating journey recently with a non diet dietician who specializes in treating ED and PCOS. According to her you are not the enemy and once I get my PCOS under control and reject diet culture my body will return to my setpoint. I am oversimplifying but you get the point. My problem is that for as long as I can remember I have always been fat so I don't know that I trust that knowledge. Could it be that there are people whose set points are in the "morbidly obese" range? Well I guess I was a normal weight once until about age 5. At 5 I was the tallest girl in class. Taller than all the boys even and yes heavier. I wasn't overweight just much taller than all the rest but adults would comment when they went to pick me up I was too heavy. I was too tall at my 8th birthday for the ball pit my parents had paid so much to reserve for my birthday. I was so "big". They meant tall but I thought they meant fat. I started gaining weight because my main abuser didn't like fat girls and found them unattractive. Back then you were my friend because you protected me from him and most men and cat calls. Now I see I built my own prison and am left wondering if some people don't have a healthy set point? The way you feel and think about your body has much to do with your level of confidence, your sense of worth, and how you let your heart out, and that shows up in many areas of your life, including business. Psychiatrist, online entrepreneur, and branding expert Stefani Reinold dropped the pill poppin’ path of mainstream mental health care in order to make real change in real women’s lives by teaching them how to find their hearts and embrace their real selves so they can create the life and business of their dream. Stefani observed that women are bogged down by many details of life, including food, body image, money, and relationships. We have a fantasy version of our self as a mom, as a wife, and as an entrepreneur. We are fed this image and notions so we all try to live up to it. You got to be real with yourself. Stefani shares some insights on how we can take away the judgment that we are inflicting on ourselves and find the heart, the truth, that value, and the worth that exists in each one of us.

We all feel pressured to “do the right thing” when it comes to our careers. This usually ends up causing us to make safe choices that might bring money but take away our time and suppress what we really want to be doing. How do you decide what field you should work in? Is your current career path the result of a safe choice? On this episode, Stefani Reinold shares her journey from being an unhappy student in medical school to building her own business online. I was hoping someone was going to give me an answer, and it took me a couple of years to figure out what my question was to begin with. -Stefani Reinold 3 Things We Learned From This Episode Know what environments you thrive in (10:30-11:26) If you are studying for a degree that you don’t like or working a job that takes all of your energy, it’s time to question your actions. Know from the beginning what your interests are as well as your raw qualities. In what environments do you thrive? Step outside your comfort zone (24:58-26:33) Many people choose risk-free careers even if they aren’t made for them. The money might be good, but waking up every day and going to a job you hate will rob you of your joy. Entrepreneurship is not a risk-free path, but if you learn from your mistakes, you can thrive. Nobody can tell you who you are (17:56-21-10) No coaching program is going to help you unless you know who you are and what you enjoy doing. What price are you willing to pay for your career? How important is the time spent with your family? The answer to this question should help you find an industry you enjoy. Dr. Stefani Reinold is a Reproductive Psychiatrist, mother of two, women's mental health advocate, and creator of the online program, Push Past Postpartum, helping new mothers overcome depression and anxiety. Her mission is to encourage new moms to stop suffering and to start embracing motherhood. Sunit interviews Dr Reinold about the rising incidence of PPD, why this is happening, and if it can be prevented. She talks about the high expectations today, the lack of community and insistence of doing it alone. They speak to the fact that once you are in it, PPD is not your fault and needs to be managed. But if you are expecting, there are definitely things you can do to try to alleviate it. Lack of sleep is a huge contributing factor so it is one of the things that needs to be kept in check. Birth trauma, medical issues, and thyroid conditions can also be contributing factors. Past experiences and social and psychological actors are also at play. Dr Reinold gives some great questions to assess your risk for PPD: -how you are actually doing now, while pregnant (not when the veil is on, and not what you think you SHOULD be feeling but how you are actually feeling) -how well you are sleeping now-is your lack of sleep being caused by current anxiety and depression? -how have you dealt with stressful experiences in the past? If you were able to get through it well, you probably have a lower risk of PPD. She offers a course for women who may be on the cusp of ppd or not able to afford professional help. www.pushpastpostpartum.com Or you can check out her website at: www.stefanireinoldmd.com
