Hello friends! Modern Rocks gallery owner and former guitar player for Modern English and The Auteurs, Steven walker is my guest for episode 1225! “David Bowie: Starman,” featuring a collection of rare David Bowie prints spanning the prolific artist's career. The exhibition runs through the end of the year at Modern Rocks Gallery 916 Springdale Road, Canopy, Building 3 Austin, Texas 78702. Go to modernrocksgallery.com for more information. I went down to Modern Rocks to see the amazing exhibit and sat down with Steven for an amazing conversation about "David Bowie: Starman" and all of the amazing, rare prints he got form the photographers themselves, getting into music, falling in love with the Telecaster, his time in The Auteurs, touring with Modern English and falling in love with Austin, his passion for iconic rock photography, getting into the gallery game and much more. I had a great time getting to know Steven. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! If you feel so inclined. Venmo: www.venmo.com/John-Goudie-1 Paypal: paypal.me/johnnygoudie
Steven Walker has spent a lifetime canoeing and kayaking wild rivers throughout Canada. His idea of adventure consisted of a healthy dose of fear and first descents. In 2020, he had the opportunity to guide on Manitoba's remote Bloodvein River. Steven usually thrives in remote conditions, but he quickly realized that guiding Rick Riewe, who had lost much of his mobility and speech to Parkinson's disease, would present unique challenges and rewards.
Jared, Oriana and Ned talk about Ned's choice of topic: Ralph Bakshi's animated film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. A heavily promoted effort at the time due it being both the first ever version of Tolkien's work done for film as well as due to Bakshi's notable reputation as the most well known American animator since Walt Disney and Chuck Jones, the 1978 movie was a reasonable success but not a smash, and the fact that it was only the first half of a planned two-film sequence – but not marketed as such – led to confused audiences and an upset Tolkien reader fanbase. At once a surprisingly faithful if still heavily redacted version of the book and a very unusual mix of animation styles that grew out of Bakshi's earlier movies, the film has retained a cult following since, and the resulting contrast with the later Peter Jackson movies has proven illuminating to both. What makes the sequences like the Flight to the Ford both compelling viewing and something of a slog? Which voice actors bring a notable depth to their characters along with the script and animation efforts – and which ones end up undercutting their characters completely? How does the shifting between particular animation styles, even within scenes, both act as intriguing experiment aiming to solve particular problems and yet also a confusing mess? And what is up with that incredibly generic musical score?SHOW NOTES.Jared's doodle. Jackson riffed on this scene for a reason. And Jared did bake a cake for Megaphonic's Kitchen Party! We're back after a brief haitus to talk about "His House." Which is a film of the spooky type.Content Warning for all the usual nasty stuff you get in horror movies. People die in these things!Written and recorded by Beth Morris and Steven Walker. Edited by David Walker.
Steven Walker captures the essence of the impressions of a long meditative walk along the back alley street of a small town or a quiet, rural road. His paintings often capture the warm light of the golden hour just after sunrise or just before sunset. Long shadows and warm glowing light arrest the eye in a narrative to be completed by the viewer. As the sun sets, and streetlights flicker on, Steven shifts to painting moody nocturnes that invoke feelings of a quieter time. His paintings are imbued with rich color, evocative light and shadow, and tantalizing design and composition that lure the viewer into his painting. Steven discovered his love for art at an early age. After earning a bachelor's and master's degree, he began the arduous road to becoming a professional fine art painter. He began painting full time at what may have seemed to be the worst possible time: during the dismal economic aftermath of the mortgage industry meltdown of 2008. Undeterred, and with the loving support of his wife, he threw himself into painting, continually honing his skills as a painter. The result of his hard work includes winning many awards and extensive gallery representation over the years. His determination to grow as an artist shows in the maturity of his work. Steven Walker’s paintings are a reflection of not only his skill and maturity as a painter, but also reflects his artistic poetry expressed with transparency and light. In this interview with the artist Steven Walker, we explore how dedication, focus, and setting the right priorities creates an environment that empowers creativity and excellence in the studio. What grounds you in the chaos that life throws your way? Is your painting what grounds you and keeps you headed in the right direction? Maybe for you, it’s family or friends who keep you focused on what really matters in life. While the answer might change from person to person, the truth is, we all need something that helps us keep it all in perspective. It was an honor to speak with my guest, Steven Walker as we explored what it takes to make the most of the hand you're dealt. From parenting, understanding depression, honing your craft, and so much more - Steven was kind enough to really open up in our wide-ranging conversation - I know that artists like you will learn a lot! How Painter Steven Walker Learned the hard way Every artist has that one hurdle that stands in their way - some of us deal with multiple hurdles at once and often at different times through our lives. Steven Walker remembers learning several lessons in his life the hard way - one, in particular, was the first time he tried to mix colors for his first painting. Then, fresh out of high school, Steven quickly learned that being the most talented in a high school doesn’t mean much in college. Steven excelled in high school where he honed his skill at drawing but he never took the opportunity at the canvas. You would never guess that Steven’s creative journey started that way by looking at his artwork today! Rolling with the punches Let’s face it, no one plans on having to struggle with mental health. For years, Steven struggled with depression, he couldn’t understand what it was that was holding him back for so long. Eventually, Steven got the help he needed to thrive and live with his depression - he learned how to roll with the punches. If you want to succeed, you need to find what works for you - every one of us has a different answer for how we will face adversity and challenges when they arise. Finding your center One of the best ways to weather the storms that life throws your way is to find your center. While the rest of the world might assume that we live to work, the truth is we need something that grounds us just like everyone else. Steven's center is his family, plain and simple. When things go crazy in life, Steven buckles down and makes sure that his family is OK above all else. You can also see this theme of finding your center expressed through Steven’s artwork, make sure to check out images of his artwork located at the end of this post. The head of the country’s most advanced military technology agency discusses the latest breakthroughs and research underway to safeguard U.S. national security and enhance American military superiority.
Steven Walker was in the band Modern English for over a decade. Born and raised in London, he lived and breathed the invasion as you know it, from new wavers to punks. Today he owns a veritable shangri-la of rock photography known as Modern Rocks Gallery, featuring the work of iconic photographers that rode shotgun with Bowie and swam underwater with Nirvana. We talked about the "full package" brand of UK musicians, switching from sold-out arena tours to gallery life, and how your role in music never has to end. I think someone in The Cure's mom pops up here, too. You better watch your step.
Advertising and editorial photographer Kirk Weddle has worked with a lot of different local and corporate clients on jobs that have taken him all over the world. Throughout his career he has honed his skills photographing people and loves to do environmental portraits which often include the opportunity to visit some interesting and exciting locations. He has also specialized in a very difficult and adventurous type of photography. Underwater. Near the beginning of his career he got a big break with a shoot for the iconic cover of Nirvana’s Nevermind (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nevermind) album and a few months later photographed the band in a swimming pool. Kirk works well under pressure (and underwater obviously) and has a lot of experience which allows him to continue working steadily, but what will his next big gig be? We will just have to watch and see where his talent and momentum takes him. Some of the subjects we discuss: Beginnings in photography Diving and Underwater Photography Nevermind cover shoot Shooting Nirvana in a pool Kurt Cobains Death Spencer Elden Underwater challenges Photographing people Working under pressure Lighting photos The old days of the darkroom Shared studio space Photo rights and income Advertising and Editorial Working under pressure Bahamas story Personal projects Having the shot Reviving Nirvana photos Modern Rocks Gallery - Steven Walker Good or bad work? Moving to America from England almost four years ago was a risky move for him and his family, but Steven Walker made it work because he knew it would. Persistence, hard work, and a love for music and photography were key ingredients. His vision was for a gallery focused on offering high quality classic rock & roll photography as well as fossils, rocks, and minerals. He knew Austin was the place to do it and now Modern Rocks is one of the best galleries in town. We had a great conversation filled with many lessons and insights into the world of photography, running a successful gallery, and a life well lived. Some of the subjects we discuss: Origins of the gallery A life in music, touring the US Getting into photography Moving to America Kirk Weddle/Nevermind Overnight notoriety Scott Newton archive Freedom/Simplicity of the past Michael Zagaris Owning a gallery Selling the work Gallery vs. Solo Social Networking Instagram Up next-Contact Sheets Film to digital Aesthetic Standards Looking forward Closing advice
