Det kinesiske markedet rakner. Stopper det her?
Question: How to Find the Root Cause of Autoimmunity? Short Answer: Autoimmune conditions are likely driven by deficiencies of vitamins A and D, which contribute to post-infectious autoimmunity by compromising the rhythmic rise and fall of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), and to autoimmunity regardless of infections through impaired suppression of Th17 helper T cells. More broadly, infections and tissue damage are the most likely drivers of autoimmunity onset. However, energy metabolism governs everything through the second law of thermodynamics, which holds that energy must be used to prevent everything from randomly mixing, and this includes randomly mixing the immune defense against pathogens with immune attacks on the host. In this example, we discuss how a respiratory chain disorder would compromise absorption and distribution of zinc and compromise the oxidation of NADH to NAD+, and how both of these would interact with a genetic impairment in acetaldehyde dehydrogenase to prevent the activation of vitamin A to retinoic acid. Autoimmunity thus results as one of many symptoms of vitamin A deficiency driven not by lack of vitamin A, but rather by impaired activation of vitamin A, secondary to impaired energy metabolism. Question: Why Would Vitamin C cause muscle pain, joint pain, and brain fog? Short Answer: Acutely, vitamin C would likely cause these effects by generating oxalate, which could cause crystals that lead to muscle and joint pain, and could cut energy metabolism in half, leading to brain fog. This vulnerability could result from deficiencies of any of the B vitamins, any of the electrolytes, or of iron, copper, or sulfur; from diabetes, low adrenals, or hypothyroidism; or from any of the hundreds of genetic defects in energy metabolism, only one of which is glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency; or any one of a huge number of toxins that impair energy metabolism. Chronically, vitamin C may increase the harms of iron overload or contribute to copper deficiency. The main ways to manage these latter issues are to take vitamin C away from meals, to maintain good copper status through proper dietary intake, and to treat iron overload with phlebotomy. Question: Can NAC hurt your gut health? Short Answer: N-acetylcysteine or NAC can be used at a dose of 600 to 2,400 milligrams per day for 5-10 days to disrupt biofilms and make it easier for antimicrobials to kill bacteria. Animal studies suggest that acute doses up to 6 grams do not deplete mucus or cause ulceration, but that an acute dose of 17.5 grams can deplete mucus and cause ulcers within two hours. Human studies suggest that 10 grams per day can be used for 24 weeks with fewer than 1 in 6 people complaining of gastrointestinal side effects. Yet, chronic use of NAC will thin the mucus, disrupt the biofilms used by normal healthy microbiota, and possibly deliver excessive sulfur to certain components of the microbiome. Therefore, I would not use it except for specific, targeted reasons, and I would not use it at a dose higher than needed or for a duration longer than needed. Swan and Stacey Colino How Dr. Ben defines wellness now compared to two years ago during his first interview on Wellness Force. What Is Wellness? The Truth Will Set You Free Power Quotes From The Show The Detrimental Effects of Over Exercising "I always say that 'health' is a four-letter word spelled 'w-o-r-k' and you have to be able to understand what empowers your genes to work efficiently and what makes your genes work harder. Exercise is phenomenal but if you work too hard than your genes are getting too dirty and they can't handle it and they start calling on other genes to support it and then they also get overworked and overburdened and you start breaking down." - Dr. Ben Lynch Dangers of Undiagnosed Histamine Intolerence "Histamine testing is inherently not very useful and that is why histamine tolerance is so undiagnosed. People literally struggle for decades; on average it goes undiagnosed for a minimum of 6 years. So people are struggling with all of these histamine-associated issues like sensitivity to Wi-Fi or perfumes and excessive irritability, difficulties falling asleep, headaches, exercise-induced asthma, eczema, psoriasis, diarrhea, chronic sinus issues, bloody noses, or ringing in your ears." - Dr. Ben Lynch Having a 'Nature First' Mindset "Humans need to always remember 'Nature first.' Anytime that you get stuck somewhere in your health, you need to come right back to the basics. Take off your shoes and socks and walk in nature. Walk on a forest floor, not grass that has been sprayed with chemicals. Go out in nature on a trail or step into the ocean or a lake. Just immerse yourself in Mother Nature and breathe that air; hopefully in a clean environment because that's where we came from, that's where we're going to end up again, and that's where we should be each day." - Dr. Ben Lynch Links From Today's Show StrateGene® - Save 10% with the code 'JOSH' Seeking Health - Get 10% off of your order with the code 'JOSH' 353 Dr. Ben Lynch CV19 Truth Series: Protecting Your Health Freedom Dirty Genes by Dr. Ben Lynch Dr. Bruce Lipton 140 Chris Kresser Dopesick Official Trailer | Hulu Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams by Matthew Walker 297 Mike Mutzel: The Truth About Fasting 380 Mike Mutzel | Syndemic vs. Pandemic: What The Health Do We Do Now? He received his doctorate in naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University. He lives in Seattle, WA with his wife and three sons. In 2011, he founded Seeking Health, a research-based company producing high-quality supplements targeted to particular health issues. Seeking Health & StrateGene® He also established Seeking Health Educational Institute (SHEI), now operating as drbenlynch.com a website for both health professionals and lay people who want to learn more about nutrigenomics and methylation. Drbenlynch.com is now one of the most trusted resources on genetics for health professionals and laypersons worldwide. In 2015, he developed StrateGene®, a unique approach to helping people develop natural strategies for overcoming genetic abnormalities. People who were getting their genetic challenges from websites like 23andMe or Genos Research were receiving massively confusing documents with wildly contradictory information. His system zeroes in on the genetic abnormalities that pose the greatest challenges in people's health and then provides comprehensive plans for overcoming those challenges through diet, environment and lifestyle.
Dr. Ben Lynch discusses more about histamine, gut health and why gallbladder issues are so common and tips to optimize. We also look at gene testing and why considering clusters of interrelated genes and their associated networks instead of myopically focusing on one good or bad gene variant is much more useful for determining your health weaknesses and strengths. It is one of many tools. 06:50 Dirty Genes book is full of quizzes which identifies genetic issues without doing genetic testing. 07:45 Lifestyle habits are passed down through generations, so issues may not be caused by genes. 08:35 Less than 5% of cancers are heritable. Only 1% of Parkinson's is genetic. 09:25 Conventional medicine using pharmacological interventions are by force. Naturopathic and functional medicine is nurture and restorative, with an appreciation for the biochemical network. 10:50 Look at genes in a wholistic way. There are about 18,000 genes in our bodies. 12:10 A single variant is minuscule compared to the other 18,000 genes communicating. And there are many other variables that make studying a single variant complicated. For example, is the study subject sleeping in a hot or cold room, mouth breathing, has a sleep partner snoring, and loaded with stress? It appears as though epigenetics overrides the majority of other provocations. 13:40 You must look at the research with a wholistic view. Look at many studies. 14:35 You do not need genetic testing. Listen to how your body is feeling and give those areas in need more love, attention, and protection. 16:12 Some genes are highly influenced by epigenetics and others are not. Sometimes is it a matter of workload for the gene. 18:00 If you have the MTHFR variant, you are less likely to die from malaria. You may have a reduced ability to methylate folate, but methylfolate can be found in leafy green vegetables and animal livers. 20:40 At some point, mutated genes helped your ancestors survive. Our genes are adapting to our new environment, and we are passing this on to our kids. 23:20 Dr. Lynch had to choose 7 genes out of 18,000 for the book. He chose MTHFR because it effects the entire genome. Two glutathione genes were chosen because oxidative stress effects the entire genome. 24:00 CMT and MAOA were chosen for their impact upon brain function. 24:30 DAO works on histamine metabolism in the gut, which can cause leaky gut. 25:00 PEMT: Solid cell membranes create cell membranes and create storage for histamine and your neurotransmitters. This phosphatidyl choline synthesizing gene highly polymorphic. 26:45 Nitric oxide is important for emergent heart issues. 26:50 By focusing on supporting these 7 genes, you are positively influencing all of your genes. 28:45 Phosphatidyl choline keeps your bile from being thick and sludgy. You need 10 parts phosphatidyl choline to one part cholesterol to have your bile flow. 30:23 If you are an obese woman in your 40s and still fertile, you will struggle with a gallbladder issue, especially if you have a PEMT variant. The primary stone in the gallbladder is formed from cholesterol. It stems from fatty liver. 32:44 The phosphatidyl choline supplement is used to improve bile flow, but since it is a lipid, it cannot be fully absorbed to improve bile flow. With PEMT variant, reduce consumption of fats and reduce the workload on that gene. 33:45 Visceral manipulation is a near instant fix for bile flow. It is massage to compress your liver. You will have an amazing bowel movement. Support with herbs that stimulate bile flow and production, like glycine, taurine, bitter herbs, ginger, and artichoke. Then supplement with phosphatidyl choline. 36:00 There is data about bile acids and dysfunctional bile acid signatures in the brain and heart. 36:50 Bile has antimicrobial properties. Taking ox bile at meals to help with fat metabolization. Ox bile taken between meals gets into your small intestine to kill off overgrowth bacteria. Maybe take it with a little charcoal. Bacteria release gasses and compounds that cause issue when they die and break open. Binding these is important. 38:28 Acid reflux is bile coming through a leaky pyloric sphincter. 39:10 The StrateGene test for neurotransmitters looks at the reduction, transport, binding to the receptor and the synthesis/metabolism of key neurotransmitters. 41:20 Pesticides slow the HTR1B gene. They bind to the serotonin receptor. 42:00 The metabolism of neurotransmitters can be fast, typical or slow. Many medications target the reuptake of neurotransmitters to keep it in the brain, rather than have it reabsorbed. 43:00 Many of us who take SSRIs get no effect because they have no or too little serotonin in the brain for the medication to work with. 43:30 5-HTP is a primary precursor to serotonin. The DEC gene converts 5-HTP to serotonin, uses vitamin B-6. 48:20 Sleep is associated with serotonin. Serotonin is converted to your melatonin. Taking supplemental melatonin may mean that serotonin is still in your brain, producing a “wired and tired” feeling. 50:55 Adderall and Ritalin are addictive amphetamines. Amphetamines block the reuptake of dopamine. Harm can be done with higher doses of amphetamines when we already have a slow ability to remove dopamine from the brain. 53:50 Medications can be useful as an intermittent intervention. Many times, non-pharmaceutical interventions can be used strategically with genetic testing. 55:05 Ritalin is toxic to the brain because it keeps so much dopamine in the brain, making dopamine quinone. Three toxic compounds are produced when you break down dopamine. 58:40 We think that Parkinson's is a low dopamine state, so patients are prescribed L-dopa. L-dopa may have been the reason their brain was toxic to begin with from a messed up MTHFR. 59:15 Supplementing with dopamine hastens the destruction of the Parkinson's brain. Parkinson's is a damaged state due to a pro-oxidative environment in the brain, possibly due to more elevated dopamine or a trapping of some of the toxic metabolites of dopamine in the brain. 01:01:17 Quinones are highly reactive and hard to calm and neutralize. Glutathione does not neutralize a reactive quinone. PQQ is helpful. Carnosine is also helpful and rapidly metabolized by carnosinase and converted into histamine and histidine. N-acetyl carnosine keeps carnosine in circulation longer. It is protective of the brain and is also used in eye drops for cataracts. 01:05:20 Eye health/function is an indicator of brain health. Your eyes contain the most mitochondria per density of any organ or body part. Eyes use a lot of oxygen and requires a lot of glutathione and other antioxidants for support.
Putting up with chronic irritating symptoms is, well, irritating. It's tiring. Headaches, stuffy nose, moods shifting, focus failing, staring at the ceiling vs falling asleep. You hear your friends say, "You're so sensitive." or "Why are you so irritable all the time?" or "Come on! Smile already. You're such a grump all the time!" If they only knew that you wish you could step out of your funk. You can step out of your funk. The way you do that is looking at how you are wired. You can only see the outside of your body. Your hair, skin, nails, muscles, tummy. And you focus on these. What if you can actually look inside you and see why you are potentially more sensitive to being irritated? Why you are more susceptible to being gloomy. Why you seem to not be able to focus your entire life. Once you discover this, then you have the ability to improve it. It's not that you discover why you are struggling with these issues and leave it at that. No. You will have the ability and the tools to become the person you always wanted to be. Focused. Happy. More tolerant. Sleeping well. I've got something for you that will help- check out today's episode. Curious about how you are wired? Order StrateGene today! When using StrateGene along with the book, Dirty Genes, you'll have two great tools to guide you.
In this week’s episode of Be HEALTHistic, Dr. Drew Sinatra welcomes fellow naturopathic physician, epigenetics expert, and bestselling author of Dirty Genes — Dr. Ben Lynch. They discuss the science of epigenetics, what the StrateGene® genetic test that Dr. Lynch developed can reveal about your health, and what you can do to help shape your genetic destiny. Do you watch his IG for updates on coronavirus protocol to stay healthy on the inside and out…maybe add how our genes, epigenetics and supplements needed to thrive right now? We start by reviewing the basic terms on epigenetics and “DIRTY GENES” How do we use our genetic reports to create an individualized health building program using nutritional therapy and lifestyle improvements (THE WHOLESTIC METHOD!)? How do endurance athletes know if they are fit and healthy… if they are going to train for endurance events- what can they do to optimize their health at a cellular level to improve fat loss, athletic performance and longevity? How can we use genetic reports- StrateGene to optimize our health, performance and longevity? Chronic stress, accumulation of external and hidden internal stressors- how does this impact our health and how does our genetics influence our outcome We talk about how we can't out supplement poor lifestyle habits (including over training and under recovery) to support, stimulate or substitute as we say as FDN Practitioners… Substitution: for missing vitamins and minerals that are no longer in the food supply, even organic food can lack nutrients Stimulation: most vitamins, minerals and herbs. For example, vitamin B-12 provides stimulation to the liver, echinacea stimulates the immune system Support: temporary support or support for vital voids, for those who may be lacking in normal production. Examples, digestive enzymes and HCl, adrenals, etc. “Dirty Genes is an empowering, actionable, and practical guide on how to optimize our health and make the best of our genes. I highly recommend this book to every person who is struggling with health challenges or simply wants to optimize their health.” “After suffering for years with unexplainable health issues, Dr. Ben Lynch discovered the root cause—“dirty” genes. Genes can be “born dirty” or merely “act dirty” in response to your environment, diet, or lifestyle—causing lifelong, life-threatening, and chronic health problems, including cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disorders, anxiety, depression, digestive issues, obesity, cancer, and diabetes. Based on his own experience and successfully helping thousands of clients, Dr. Lynch shows you how to identify and optimize both types of dirty genes by cleaning them up with targeted and personalized plans, including healthy eating, good sleep, stress relief, environmental detox, and other holistic and natural means. Many of us believe our genes doom us to the disorders that run in our families. But Dr. Lynch reveals that with the right plan in place, you can eliminate symptoms, and optimize your physical and mental health—and ultimately rewrite your genetic destiny. It’s extremely common for people who are highly creative to also constantly battle with things like depression, anxiety, and attention issues. If you’ve listened to past episodes you know this is basically the story of my entire adult life, and I even delve into the link between depression and creativity in the very first episode of this show. For years I believed that I must just be a weak person, or maybe I was just doing the wrong things, or worst of all..maybe I was just “broken.” When my journey of overcoming depression and anxiety began there was no definitive diagnostic test that proved what I was battling was real, so it was easy to think (or have other people believe) that I was just “making this stuff up.” Luckily with some amazing advances in genetic testing over the last several years, depression and anxiety can be tested no different than whether or not you might have diabetes. More importantly, with the results of your genetic testing, you can make much more informed decisions about lifestyle changes that can significantly improve the quality of your life...possibly without the need for antidepressants (but please consult a medical professional before making any changes to your prescription medication, regardless of what you might learn in this interview). I’m very excited today to have the opportunity to speak with quite possibly the foremost expert on the entire planet when it comes to genetic testing, and more importantly interpreting the results of genetic tests from companies such as 23andme. My guest is Dr. Ben Lynch, the founder of the company Strategene, and he’s also the author of the book Dirty Genes: A Breakthrough Program to Treat the Root Cause of Illness and Optimize Your Health. In this episode we talk all about the genetic mutations that are very common for those dealing with mental health issues, and more importantly the simple lifestyles changes you can make to better manage (and even overcome) your mental health issues. Book: Dirty Genes http://amzn.to/2nHlhBf www.drbenlynch.com Dirty Genes http://learntruehealth.com/dirty-genes/ Dirty genes is a significant factor why we do not reach an optimal level of health. Our body needs healthy genes to function properly. But unfortunately, many people are still unaware of this vital aspect of health. That’s why we’re so lucky to have Dr. Ben Lynch here with us today to explain everything you need to know about dirty genes. Childhood Interest Dr. Ben Lynch was 16 years old when he was first introduced to biochemistry in high school. He thought it was the best class he ever had because it taught him about how the body works. Because Dr. Ben Lynch became fascinated with how our body was wired, he went on to pursue a medical degree in college. But it was not long before he realized that standard medicine and the conventional route was not for him. The turning point in his career path was when Dr. Ben Lynch got sick during a trip to India. Finding a cure for his illness, he was introduced to a peculiar form of medicine. Dr. Ben Lynch recalls that the one treating him checked his tongue, pulse, and gave a weird prescription. Surprisingly, he felt better after 40 minutes! That experience eventually led Dr. Ben Lynch to pursue a career as a Naturopathic Doctor by getting his degree at Bastyr University. But Dr. Ben Lynch still felt it wasn’t enough until he developed an interest in Environmental Medicine. This led him to discover epigenetics. Focus On Epigenetics Dr. Ben Lynch was very much concerned about how a poor environment can make people very ill and develop dirty genes. When he learned that genes were a significant factor in the entire process, he started to dive deeper into genetic research. “Our genes require tools. Most of the tools come from the food that we eat. If we are providing our body with healthful, wholesome foods, our genes get the tools they can use to function. Such as protein, carbs, fats, vitamins, minerals, water, air, and sunlight,” said Dr. Ben Lynch. He adds, “We give genes those tools through nutrition, breathing properly, hydration and avoid doing stuff that makes them do excessive work like chemicals in the environment, wi-fi signals, and polluted air.” And that’s so true! I first heard about epigenetics from Dr. Joe Wallach. He wrote the book, Epigenetics: The Death of the Genetic Theory of Disease Transmission. The book explains how nutrition supports the genes to be healthy. It’s a very informative book, and I recommend all you listeners to include this in your reading list. Air Purifiers Pollutants in the environment are unavoidable. But because they cause dirty genes, Dr. Ben Lynch says one way to clear the air is using air purifiers. Air purifiers can clear the air of chemicals and elements like smoke, pollen, and dust. Good brands of air purifiers include IQAir and Alen Air. But Dr. Ben Lynch puts in a word of caution if and when you decide to get one. “Air purifiers have an engine. I recommend plugging it in and turn on outside to let it off the gas,” advises Dr. Ben Lynch. “Because nowadays, everything is wrapped in plastic. When you turn it on, there are so many volatile organic compounds that are being emitted.” Dr. Ben Lynch also advises avoiding having carpets if you want to avoid having dirty genes. Because apparently, carpets are sponges that hold dirt. There are also a lot of other odd compounds in carpets. It traps dust and humidity, attracts molds and dust mites. Gas And Cooking We also know that gas is a toxic substance. That’s why Dr. Ben Lynch strictly advises that gas is something that needs to be outside. So, if you’re cooking, you need to be using your exhaust fan. “Smoke from oils have formaldehyde, destroy genes and burdens the body. Then a lot of people are taking antacids, which are inhibiting their primary detoxification system,” said Dr. Ben Lynch. “People are also loading up with Tylenol. This depletes primary antioxidants. So be wary of what you buy over the counter.” Dr. Ben Lynch says it is also bad to inhale smoke from cars. The carbon monoxide binds to the hemoglobin. And when carbon monoxide seeps into our tissues, it can eventually kill us. “You increase cardiovascular disease risk from inhaling smoke. People who are exercising in more polluted areas are also increasing cardiovascular risk,” Dr. Ben Lynch said. “That has to do with a gene called NOS 3, which is an important gene to keep clean.” Dirty Genes Course To those who would like to know more about the causes of dirty genes, do sign up for Dr. Ben Lynch’s course. The course provides a lot of insights on how to optimize your eating habits, and to have a better experience without supplements. “The course guides people through the fundamentals of life. It also educates people why we need folate to make our body function right,” said Dr. Ben Lynch. According to Dr. Ben Lynch, folate is essential in things like: regulating white blood cells fighting infection regulating red blood cells so we can breathe regulate our platelets nourish our neurotransmitters so we can think helps repair DNA when chemicals invade into our system essential in kids’ growth makes skin healthy since our skin creates skin cells all the time Importance Of Folic Acid Folic acid is a form of folate and is one of the B vitamins that we need. The U.S. recommended daily allowance of folic acid is 400 micrograms. These may be gained through food or dietary supplements. “Folic acid binds preferentially to the folate receptors and folate transporters in the body. It goes through the DHFR (dihydrofolate reductase) gene. This gene can handle 200 micrograms of folic acid before it gets saturated,” said Dr. Ben Lynch. But Dr. Ben Lynch says some people have a genetic problem with this particular gene. Apparently, the folic acid can’t get through the DHFR gene. It has to go somewhere, so it ends up staying in the blood. Researchers call it unmetabolized folic acid. “What unmetabolized folic acid does, is that it will get to your folate transport protein. Folic acid blocks transportation of the folate and getting inside the cell,” explains Dr. Ben Lynch. Dr. Ben Lynch also reveals that people can be functionally folate-deficient. This is because they are functionally depriving their cells of the number one type of folate in their body which is methylfolate. Common side effects include experiencing brain fog, moodiness, and an unexplainable toxic feeling. StrateGene Ready to dive deeper into how genes work? Dr. Ben Lynch developed a genetic report called StrateGene. It uses 23andMe instead of ancestry because according to Dr. Ben Lynch, ancestry mainly has ancestral DNA. In order words, he says you don’t have clinically relevant genes on www.ancestry.com to run through a genetic report. StrateGene also provides you a map so you can see what dirties up the genes. It also provides a quick glance at how vitamins, minerals, medication, and chemicals interfere with certain things. “If you see any condition run in your family, there is most likely a genetic component there. And if you lead a lifestyle that is healthy, the chances of you struggling with that condition is lower,” said Dr. Ben Lynch. But Dr. Ben Lynch says the more important factor is finding out what genes you inherited that is probably causing your illness. Knowing which genes are born dirty can give you an insight on where you should be spending more time and caution. And the cool thing is that you can support yourself through very targeted actions that will help the weaker genes. What are Dirty Genes? Now many of you may be wondering what dirty genes are. Dr. Ben Lynch explains that dirty genes are genes that are not functioning at it’s best. One can inherit dirty genes from your parents. And it usually does not function as well as it should be in your particular environment. “You can inherit it. Genes also get dirty by sitting in the garage after turning on your car or turning on your gas stove and not turning the hood on. Dirty genes are also from eating unhealthy or from chronic stress,” said Dr. Ben Lynch. Juicing, Raw Foods And Cooking Dr. Ben Lynch advises that if you cook your leafy green vegetables, steam them for a short period. That’s where you’ll get your folate. Apparently, the longer you cook, the more your folate will be destroyed. “Leafy greens are great. But if you have a weak constitution and digestion, eating raw, cold vegetables can be hard on you. So you might want to steam them,” Dr. Ben Lynch advises. ” If you have a frail palate, steam veggies and have soup. Keep in mind your body temperature, the power of your digestion and how you feel after. Listen to your body.” Dr. Ben Lynch claims to love juicing as well. He says he prefers using a Blendtec over Vitamix because it is not as noisy. I like Blendtec, too. But I have heard feedback from friends that it breaks down. Incidentally, I had the Vitamix expert Lenny Gale on my show a couple of times. His website Life is No Yoke is packed with info on the different Vitamix models as well as yummy recipes using Vitamix. So I invite everyone to check out his website. Histamine Intolerance Dr. Ben Lynch also recommends a good brand of probiotics to keep our microbiome healthy. Some health conditions like headaches, runny nose, asthma and leaky gut is a sign that one may have histamine intolerance. Histamine in the stomach and small intestines is good because it stimulates the stomach acid, movement of stool and immune response. But it is not good to have too much histamine in our gut because it could lead to digestive issues like diarrhea, and acid reflux. Link Between Vaccines And Genes Dr. Ben Lynch shares that vaccines have a role in specific environments for certain people. But he believes vaccines are hurting our kids and pregnant women. The same goes for flu shots. Ideally, Dr. Ben Lynch recommends that parents should wait until their child is at least 12 years old before getting them vaccinated instead of when they are newborns. This is because any heavy metal will interfere with a plethora of genes. “You can take all the supplements you want, but if you have metals, genes won’t work well. Avoid metals like aluminum because they interfere with neurotransmitters in the brain,” said Dr. Ben Lynch. He adds, “I am not pro-vaccine, but I don’t think they are all bad. I just think if we do use them, they should be used selectively.” I recently had a great interview with Dr. Paul Thomas on vaccines, and the need to have a vaccine-friendly plan. We talked extensively about choosing when and which vaccines are safe so do check out that episode as well. Dr. Benjamin Lynch, ND received his Cell and Molecular Biology, BS from the University of Washington and his doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine (ND) from Bastyr University. His passion for identifying the cause of disease-directed him towards nutrigenomics and methylation dysfunction. Are mutations in your genes for the vitamin D receptor impacting your vitamin D requirements? There are three common genetic variants, known as Taq1, Bsm1, and Fok1. They’ve been associated with the risk of certain diseases but no one has quite sorted out what they are actually doing. It’s possible they raise your need for vitamin D. Watch this video for my recommendations on what to do if you have them. I recommend testing your VDR genes with StrateGene, which you can get here: chrismasterjohnphd.com/strategene For more information on how to get the StrateGene report, watch this video: https://chrismasterjohnphd.com/2017/12/04/know-need-care-mthfr/ You may also enjoy these other two videos I made about vitamin D testing: https://chrismasterjohnphd.com/2017/05/16/tell-difference-vitamin-d-calcium-deficiencies/ https://chrismasterjohnphd.com/2017/05/18/vitamin-d-normal-pth-high/ To get these episodes free of ads, with transcripts, and weeks or sometimes even months before they are released to the public, along with access to monthly live Q&A sessions, sign up for the CMJ Masterpass at https://chrismasterjohnphd.com/masterpass. Can you get vitamin A from plant foods? It depends on your genes. Listen to this podcast to learn how to figure out your BCO1 genetics and how this impacts your vitamin A requirement. Vitamin A is found in the form of carotenoids in red, orange, yellow, and green vegetables, and in the form of retinol in animal foods, especially liver. BCO1 helps you convert the carotenoids to retinol, which is the form you need to have in your body to be healthy. Many of us have genetic impairments in BCO1. In fact, for genetic reasons alone, if you took 100 of us, half of us would make the conversion less than half as well as the other half. A quarter of us would have our ability to make the conversion slashed four-fold. But it isn’t *all* about genetics. There are many other factors -- thyroid health, iron, protein, zinc, vitamin E, parasites, oxidative stress, heavy metals, polyunsaturated fats -- the list just goes on and on for the things that can affect this conversion. Knowing your genes is helpful, but only one piece of the puzzle. Listen to the podcast for how I recommend handling this. I recommend testing your BCO1 genes with StrateGene, which you can get here: chrismasterjohnphd.com/strategene For more information on how to get the StrateGene report, watch this video: https://chrismasterjohnphd.com/2017/12/04/know-need-care-mthfr/ To get these episodes free of ads, with transcripts, and weeks or sometimes even months before they are released to the public, along with access to monthly live Q&A sessions, sign up for the CMJ Masterpass at https://chrismasterjohnphd.com/masterpass. Do you have anxiety? Depression? Attention problems? Or are you worried about estrogen and cancer? If so, listen to this podcast to learn about the role of your COMT genetics. COMT metabolizes dopamine, estrogen, and various other things. Half of us have the genetic for intermediate activity. The other half of us are split evenly between high and low activity. When nutrition is optimal, this just leads to personality differences: with low COMT activity, you’re better at focusing, but tend to ruminate on things rather than letting them go; with high COMT activity, you rarely get stuck in a rut, but you just as rarely sit down to focus on one single thing. When nutrition is off, we can go to pathological extremes, whether it’s depression and anxiety on one hand, or attention deficit and hyperactivity on the other. Robust COMT activity is also needed to get rid of harmful forms of estrogen that contribute to cancer risk. I recommend testing your COMT genes with StrateGene, which you can get here: chrismasterjohnphd.com/strategene To get these episodes free of ads, with transcripts, and weeks or sometimes even months before they are released to the public, along with access to monthly live Q&A sessions, sign up for the CMJ Masterpass at https://chrismasterjohnphd.com/masterpass. Do you have asthma? High blood pressure? Knowing your nitric oxide genes may help you find a solution. In this episode we continue to look at the StrateGene report, this time focusing on the genes for endothelial nitric oxide synthase. Impairments in this enzyme can increase your risk of asthma or high blood pressure. If you have either of these conditions and impairments in the enzyme, then you may benefit from strategies aimed at increasing nitric oxide production. Ensuring adequate zinc and arginine are part of the strategy because they support the enzyme, but you also should consider strategies that get around the enzyme, such as foods and supplements that generate nitric oxide enzymatically. Watch the video to learn more! I recommend testing your eNOS genes with StrateGene, which you can get here: chrismasterjohnphd.com/strategene For more information on how to get the StrateGene report, watch this video: https://chrismasterjohnphd.com/2017/12/04/know-need-care-mthfr/ Here is a link to Neo40: https://chrismasterjohnphd.com/neo40 To get these episodes free of ads, with transcripts, and weeks or sometimes even months before they are released to the public, along with access to monthly live Q&A sessions, sign up for the CMJ Masterpass at https://chrismasterjohnphd.com/masterpass. You may have heard of MTHFR, but have you heard about MTRR? If you care about your vitamin B12 status, listen to this podcast to learn about it. MTRR is an enzyme that helps you repair your vitamin B12 once it’s been damaged. You don’t need to use it a lot most of the time, so some of us, including me, have genetic variations that make it not work very well, yet we’re fine most of the time. But when you are exposed to new health challenges that increase the damage done to your B12, suddenly you may need to use the enzyme more than usual, and if you have genetic impairments in the enzyme you may suddenly become vulnerable to vitamin B12 deficiency. I don’t recommend making a specific nutritional strategy around MTRR, but I do recommend you monitor your B12 status more proactively if you have genes that lower your MTRR activity. I recommend testing your MTRR with StrateGene, which you can get here: chrismasterjohnphd.com/strategene For more information on how to get the StrateGene report, watch this video: https://chrismasterjohnphd.com/2017/12/04/know-need-care-mthfr/ To get these episodes free of ads, with transcripts, and weeks or sometimes even months before they are released to the public, along with access to monthly live Q&A sessions, sign up for the CMJ Masterpass at https://chrismasterjohnphd.com/masterpass. Should you care about your MTHFR? Here’s how to find out your MTHFR genetic status and know how it affects you. MTHFR is an enzyme that allows folate, or vitamin B9, to support a process known as methylation. Methylation is important to mental health, cardiovascular health, sports performance, and preventing cancer, just to name a few. In this episode, I show you how to find your MTHFR genetic status. I also discuss how the various different genetic combinations impact you and how you can leverage that information to determine how strictly you should follow the dietary recommendations I’ll outline in the next episode.
