In light of Australian Venue Co’s refusal to acknowledge Australia Day, 4BC Drive wanted to spotlight a local pub celebrating the public holiday. The Bearded Dragon Hotel in Tamborine has been hosting classic Australia Day celebrations for 27 years, and this year is no exception. Host at The Bearded Dragoon Hotel, 'Toad Man' told Gary Hardgrave on 4BC Drive, "It's ridiculous, it's the day everyone can let their hair down." "When it comes to tradition you can't go past Australia Day and ANZAC Day, they're hot to trot," he continued. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Find your nearest John Deere dealer at deere.com.au  Graeme Andrews is Superintendent of the beautiful Tamborine Mountain Golf Club in the Gold Coast Hinterland of Queensland. Originally from New Zealand, Graeme learned his greenkeeping trade on cool season grasses on some well known courses. Upon a holiday trip to Queensland, Graeme soon found his new "home" in the warm Queensland temperatures. After moving to Queensland and few years working outside the industry learning new skills, it wasn't long before greenkeeping was back in his mind and Graeme was back working on a golf course. Tamborine Mountain Golf Club has a unique golf course, very different from the resort and high quality warm season turf surfaces the Golf Coast region is known for. Along with detailing his career, Graeme gives us an insight into the golf course at Tamborine Mountain, some of the challenges they've faced recently, along with some course upgrades and Koalas all in his own jovial and light hearted way. Ever wondered if unconditional love is truly possible, or just a beautifully wrapped myth? Charles and Dan crack open this topic and so much more on our latest Mindfully Masculine podcast. From the unexpected social connections made through pickleball to the crucial role of self-care in the modern man's life, we share our personal anecdotes and insights. The conversation then deepens as we scrutinize the concept of unconditional love, questioning its existence and the potential harm in expecting love without conditions from anyone, be it our partners, children, or pets.Picture this: you're knee-deep in a relationship where you're giving it your all, but something feels off. That's neediness knocking at your door, and it's a tell-tale sign of an imbalance in the give-and-take dynamic. We dissect this tricky subject, reflecting on how social media skews our love expectations and the importance of a balanced social life. And for those moments when you need to recharge? We'll guide you through the self-care maze, weighing the pros and cons of baths and showers, even invoking the 'Iceman' Wim Hof to discuss the invigorating effects of cold showers. As the curtain falls on our podcast episode, we leave no stone unturned, diving into the finer points of skincare with essential oils and colloidal oatmeal, and sharing personal experiences that blend the reflective with the practical. Setting realistic expectations for love and relationships, we conclude with heartfelt advice on maintaining effort in partnerships and embracing self-kindness. Whether you're a long-time listener or new to Mindfully Masculine, this episode promises to resonate with your quest for a more introspective and balanced masculine journey."Tamborine" by Chris Rockhttps://www.netflix.com/title/80167498Support the show

Hear about travel to Queensland's Gold Coast as the Amateur Traveler talks to Leanne and Lyle from BeachTravelWine.com about one of their favorite beach destinations. https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-queenslands-gold-coast/ Why should you go to the Gold Coast? Leanne and Lyle say, "We go for lots of different reasons, but I guess the main one would be, the stunning beaches, and I know lots of places have stunning beaches, but this would have to, I think, be Australia's best strip of beaches, and it's the best surfing beach area, in Australia. It has a really interesting nightlife too. It's the nature, it's right there at the mountains as well and it's adventure. It's got a nickname of the Glitter Strip or, our Glamour Strip. It's it's not Las Vegas by any stretch of the imagination, but it's got that feel about it." Leanne and Lyle lay out a week-long itinerary: Day 1: Start your visit in the middle of the Gold Coast, in Surfers Paradise. Explore Cavill Avenue, a pedestrian-only strip with attractions like wax museums and Ripley's Believe It or Not. Stroll along the beachfront walkways and enjoy the beautiful beaches and surfers. Check out the iconic Surfers Paradise beach area and consider visiting the Q1 building for breathtaking views of the Gold Coast. If you're adventurous you can climb the outside of the building. Keep an eye out for the meter maids made famous by the Beatles. Day 2: Head about 40 kilometers inland from the Gold Coast to Mount Tamborine, a mountainous area known for its lush rainforests. Explore the little town of Tamborine and the Gallery Walk, featuring craft shops, pottery, and more. Enjoy the Rainforest Skywalk and explore Lamington National Park, known for its hiking trails, waterfalls, and lookouts. Consider hot air ballooning or visit local wineries and coffee plantations. Day 3: Experience whale-watching cruises starting from South Port Marina. You'll have a chance to see humpback whales from June to November. After the cruise, explore the South Port Marina area and enjoy the beautiful views. Consider dining at local surf clubs and taking a stroll along the Tweed River with its picturesque views. Day 4: Visit Pacific Fair, a large shopping center with various shops, food courts, and outdoor areas. Explore Broadbeach, known for its range of restaurants and cafes. You can visit Kurrawa Surf Club for lunch, take coastal walks, and enjoy the park. Day 5: Explore Coolangatta and Rainbow Bay, where you can visit the iconic Snapper Rocks and enjoy the beach and local restaurants. You can also visit Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, where you'll encounter Australian wildlife, see wild lorikeet feedings, and enjoy various animal encounters and activities. Day 6: Take a day trip to Moreton Island, known for the Tangalooma Wrecks, sunken ships that create a unique snorkeling experience. Enjoy the underwater scenery with coral and various fish species. You can also participate in dolphin feeding, where wild dolphins swim close to shore to take fish from your hand. Day 7: Spend a relaxing day, perhaps visiting a spa or wellness center at your accommodation. Enjoy the beach, swim, and unwind, taking in the serene surroundings of the Gold Coast. Some optional activities would include exploring some of Australia's best theme parks including Movie World, Dream World, and Wet'n'Wild. Consider purchasing a multi-day park pass to experience all the rides and attractions these parks offer. You might also check if there are any local sporting events happening during your stay, such as NRL or Aussie Rules games. Fans of racing should think about attending events like the Gold Coast 500 V8 Supercars race or the Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia. In both events, cars race through the streets of the Gold Coast. For a side-trip consider a day trip to Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland, which is only about a 45-minute train ride away. Explore Brisbane's attractions, such as the Botanic Gardens, South Bank, and the River City's waterfront. You can attend unique cabaret shows like "Dracula's" or "Outback Spectacular" to add some excitement to your evenings. Be aware of the two weeks in November when kids Queensland and New South Wales visit the Gold Coast for "schoolies" celebrations. This is Australia's version of spring break for recently graduated high school seniors. It might not be the ideal time for a visit if you're looking for a quieter experience. If you are looking for a mix of glamour, beach, and nature, then consider Queensland's Gold Coast.

The often-heard claim, "our company puts people first," has unfortunately become more of a cliche than something one sees regularly in today's organizations. Having said that, it is ever so exciting to find a company and a leader that truly implements a 'people-first' approach to leadership and teamwork. And equally exciting, is an unlikely source of inspiration and lessons for such great teamwork: music. In this episode, we meet CEO Vanessa Ogle of Enseo, one of the fastest-growing technology companies in the U.S. over the past 20 years. Enseo delivers sustainable technology and innovation to people-places like hotels and schools. Vanessa Ogle is also an avid musician who is just as comfortable in the boardroom as she is when playing with her band of musicians on stage. My Favorite Quotes from Vanessa Ogle in this episode, (paraphrased):"Nothing can happen without a team!”“Never throw out the Tamborine player in the band!”“Great teamwork is about trust, communication, vulnerability, and transparency!”The best ways to connect with Vanessa Ogle online are:Website: https://enseo.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vanessaogle/About the PROFITABLE HAPPINESS™ Podcast:The Profitable Happiness™ Podcast features stories from highly successful CEOs, Business Leaders, and Experts who exemplify the use of Inspirational Leadership, Employee Happiness, and Harmonious Teams to build business profitability. https://drpele.comSupport the show (https://drpele.com)

Episode #8: Fall Asleep - (Song at 5:52) Continuing on with another song this week. I explore the songwriting, using pretty much 'layman' inclusive language. So non-musicians, non-songwriters that know nothing about the theory of music can enjoy hearing how the song came together.  A song is like an emotional book marker in time. When I listen to an old demo like this, it takes me right back to when the song was composed, which was in 1988 (!) This 'Fall Asleep' demo was recorded in 2004. It's what I came to Melbourne for, from New Zealand, so it was very exciting to get some basic recording software, courtesy of Anthony Reed - he plays guitar on this track - and we still record and perform together today in the (previously mentioned) band, Pascoe.  The amazing Mr Earl Pollard (sadly no longer with us) is on the drums - we recorded these in his garage, this take is the first time he'd heard the song.  I've been lucky to have these marvellous musicians coming into my life... and my wife, Marie, is on backing vocals - and Tamborine, I see, too.  I wrote the song years ago, I was on a 2 month job, it was a gig on an NZ mountain, playing music in a restaurant during a skiing season. I got to ski all day and sing all night. Perfect. Plus if it rained I'd go trout fishing of write songs or draw cartoons. Pretty much sublime.  Except I broke my right thumb on the afternoon of the first gig. Youch! This made for an interesting performance on the keys that night, I can tell you (you can hear more about it on this episode). In 'Fall Asleep', there's a sense of loneliness and loving for what - and whom - I'm missing, but there is also a peacefulness, plus an 'other worldly' sort of outro that lifts the whole thing into something else.

Today we re-cast one of our favorite episodes, an interview with folklorist and Houston native Langston Collin Wilkins, who studies "slab" culture and the "screwed and chopped" hip hop that rattles the slabs and serves as the culture's soundtrack. Since the 1990s, many of Houston’s African American residents have customized cars and customized the sound of hip hop. Cars called “slabs” swerve a slow path through the city streets, banging out a distinctive local music that paid tribute to those very same streets and neighborhoods. Wilkins shows us how sonic creativity turns a space—a collection of buildings and streets—into a place that is known, respected, and loved. In this show we hear the slow, muddy, psychedelic sounds of DJ Screw and The Screwed Up Click, including rappers such as Lil Keke, Fat Pat, Big Hawk, and UGK--as well as songs by Geto Boys, Willie Dee, Swishahouse, Point Blank, Biggie Smalls, and MC T Tucker & DJ Irv. Photos by Langston Collin Wilkins. Transcript [low humming and static playing] [CRIS CHEEK] This…is…Phantom Power. [Tamborine beat blends in] Episode 7: Screwed and Chopped. [Hip hop music with vocals cuts in] Parental discretion is advised. Welcome to Phantom Power. I’m cris cheek. Today on the seventh and final episode of our first season, my co-host Mack Hagood converses with Langston Collin Wilkins. Langston is a folklorist an ethnomusicologist active in both academia and the public sector. Working as a traditional art specialist at the Tennessee Arts Commission. Mack spoke with Langston recently about his research into Houston’s unique slab, car culture. The city’s relationship to hip hop and hip hop’s to community. Enjoy. [Different hip hop music plays] [MACK HAGOOD] So before we get into the research of Langston Collin Wilkins, maybe we should get one question out of the way. Why would a folklorist be studying hip hop? Don’t they study things like folk tales or traditional music or quilting? Well, in fact the folklorist I know study things like bodybuilding and fashion and internet memes. Folklorists study everyday creativity. One contemporary definition of folklore is “artistic communication in small groups.” As Langston shows, it’s the way a town like Houston gets a look and a sound all its own, but folklore didn’t lead Langston to hip hop. In fact, it was quite the other way around. [Hip hop music cuts out] [LANGSTON COLLINS WILKINS] Back when I was a kid, around 12 years old, I received my first hip hop record, which was the “Ghetto Boys Resurrection Album”  in 1996. [A song from the album plays] Born and raised in Houston, Texas, the south side, where Scarface is from that same area. The Ghetto Boys in my hometown heroes as they are for everyone growing up in Houston in those communities. I just became obsessed with hip hop, and not just the music, but just the larger culture and community surrounding it. I was reading everything I could get my hands on about hip hop, I was watching everything, just studying the culture and that kind of continued through college. When I got the grad school, I went hoping to study hip hop in some form or fashion. It was through hip hop that I learned about folklore and became interested in it. I spent a year doing ethnographic research in Houston amongst the hip hop community there. I focus mostly on I guess the more street oriented or gangsta rappers, and we’re studying the artists and producers connection to place. I was looking at how and why these artists was so deeply connected to the city itself, apartment buildings, streets, neighborhoods,  and how these attachments and connection to place have been reproduced in their musical output. [Different hip hop song plays] Why do Houston Raptors always shout out, call out, give dedications to places that they are familiar and intimately connected with? “Seja homem!” On this episode of Hanging With Apes the guys host their friend, Vincent Williams, founder of blog site www.criticatxl.com. The conversation starts with their thoughts on Chris Rock's "Tamborine" Netflix Stand-Up Special. As they break down the themes that Chris Rock discussed on his special the guys naturally move on to the recent talk about gun control regarding the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting in Parkland, Florida. K. Cartoon then brings up Mo'Nique's interview on The Breakfast Club and the conversation leads to how her attitude about her Netflix situation parallels Hollywood's hypocrisy when it comes to tackling societal issues. Finally, K. Cartoon shares his thoughts on Marvel's Black Panther.

This episode I host Brooklyn, New York based musician, producer, and dj Eugene Tambourine (https://soundcloud.com/eugene-tambourine). Eugene Tambourine is one of those rare DJs whose broad-ranging tastes can educate, transport, confuse, elate and inspire all at the same time. I first heard Eugene at the Seattle's Pony a couple of years back and i loved his energy. Along with spinning great sets, Eugene is also a very established musician and producer. His precisely crafted edits are bright and introspective while being very complimentary to the original version. He also recently toured the world with singer-songwriter Scott Matthew. You can find more of Eugene Tambourine here: https://soundcloud.com/eugene-tambourine http://www.mixcloud.com/meugenelemcio/ You can find a full track list over on my blog: http://djshmeejay.com/2015/02/16/eugene-tambourine-dj-shmeejay-aint-no-big-thing-radio-show-2015-02-15/ Next broadcast will be on March 1, 2015, featuring another guest that will be announced during the coming couple of weeks.
