Fumito Ueda's trilogy of Playstation games- Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian- are idiosyncratic, minimalist art pieces. The final game in the trilogy, before the unfortunate dissolution of Japan Studio, was The Last Guardian, showcasing the uneasy partnership between an unnamed boy and a large, fearsome beast named Trico. The Last Guardian pushes back on the idea that games need to be responsive and frictionless, instead forcing you to rely on your shaky communication with an animal to progress through the game. Your mileage may vary with how willing you are to put up with this, but for me, this was a beautiful experience that I love with my entire heart. Joining me to discuss The Last Guardian is Chris, one of the hosts of the Franchise Festival podcast. Today, we'll all learn about Shadow of the Colossus, originally released for the Sony PlayStation 2 on October 18th, 2005. As part of its history, we'll learn all about formation of its development studio, Team Ico, and the early career of its creator, Fumito Ueda. We'll continue the conversation by talking about the development process of Shadow of the Colossus, itself. Finally, we'll talk about the significance of the game in the conversation of video games as art, and the legacy it has left behind. So join us for today's minimalist trip down Memory Card Lane.
¡Emocionante! Podcasts that are once lost cannot be reclaimed. Welcome to the very first (kind of) NOCLIP Epilogue! On this series, that we'll come back to every once in a while, we're going to be revising some of our earliest episodes to rehash our discussions but with more media literacy and higher quality audio. For our first formal entry in the series (not counting Undertale, which we did as a primer to the Deltarune series, which, you know, we'll get back to at some point), we're going to be covering Shadow of the Colossus, which was our second ever episode. Shadow, in case you're somehow unaware, is the second game from Team Ico, and is loosely set in the same universe and has a similar visual and mood to Ico. There is a dour atmosphere over the whole game, with a plot centering around a character attempting to revive a dead woman, a mysterious masked man and his cadre of knights and a Godlike figure named Dormin who promises to help with the resurrection if we do a task for him. There's an air of mystery around the entire process, from what you're doing to the plot itself and even who the characters are, and this lack of certainty cements the atmosphere of the game as well as keeps the player on the hunt for clues, making the whole experience more intellectually stimulating in addition to its mechanical challenges. As for what you actually do, Shadow tasks you with taking down 16 enormous boss creatures by physically climbing all over them and attacking weak points. Your player character controls in what feels like a very fragile and imprecise way, making this task feel difficult and imposing. There's a lot more to say about how the game mixes its themes and its mechanics, but that should be the gist if you aren't already a fan, so listen to us unpack the rest of it in today's episode. We're going to be talking about the way everything from the world to your horse contributes to the overall themes of the game, we talk about the pacing of the game and its ambitions versus the game we really got, and we speculate on what Mono's last will and testament probably had in it. Thank you for joining us again this week, and for indulging us this nostalgic look back at one of our favorite games we covered. Hopefully the epilogue series continues to do what we intended, as I feel like even this shorter episode gets across what makes the game good better than we were able to do seven, almost eight, years ago. What did you think about this episode format? Do you have suggestions for other games we covered in the long-long ago for us to take another look at? Let us know over in our Discord or in the comments! Next time, we're doing our first Mystery May pocket episode, which is a different style to previous years, and through a series of events that are unfortunate, we ended up being forced to do an immediate epilogue follow up on the worst game we've ever covered (debatably) in Rascal for the Playstation, so if you enjoy when we suffer, please join us then.
In this week's Bucket List Gamers podcast Jay and Eddie look at Ico (91) and Shadow of the Colossus (53) from Team Ico, as well as the their third game The Last Guardian. It's safe to say one of these games splits opinion between the BLG team! Also please be warned there are some fairly heavy spoilers for Shadow of the Colossus, so listen at your own risk (but please do listen!)Enjoy! For quite some time we've wanted to produce a podcast on VG247, but for assorted reasons nothing ever got off the ground. That has now changed. VG247's The Best Games Ever Podcast is here. “What is this new podcast?” you ask, with the child-like glee usually reserved for when you spot a new type of M&M or an ice cream version of a favourite childhood sweet. Well, it's quite simple, really. Each week three of us must present our choice for the best game ever that meets certain criteria. Then our host/judge, Jim Trinca, will decide who has made the best case and declare a winner. We'll never do something so simple as “Best horror game,” or “Best PS2 game.” That's just not what this show is about. We're trying to do something a little different, on the off-chance it's more fun than just a bunch of us sat around talking. Each week we'll have something specific to talk about, and that's it. There might be the odd hilarious segue, but the aim is to be more panel show-like. We're also trying to deliver a show that's about 30 minutes long. Enough to feel like you've been a part of something, but not so long that you need a week's worth of commutes/park walks to get through one episode. Hopefully, that's something you can get onboard with. That is it. We've got some details on the show's content below, so if you want to avoid spoilers, don't scroll beyond this warning. W A R N I N G Best game with a named horse This is the topic of Episode one of VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast. Here's a rundown of who picked what. Tom – Shadow of the Colossus This one is pretty obvious, and no doubt a favourite amongst readers/listeners. Shadow of the Colossus is a brilliant game that is considered by many to be a true classic. And it has a named horse in the shape of Agro. Team Ico's game is so good it's been remade/remastered twice, so has appeared on PS2, PS3, and PS4. Do you agree with Tom? Dorrani – Elden Ring Dorrani went for something more recent, with Elden Ring. Released earlier in 2022, Elden Ring is already considered a classic of the open-world genre, offering intense and challenging battles along with a world that is a joy to discover. The horse in Elden Ring is named Torrent, and has among other talents a rather incredible double-jump. What do you think? Is Elden Ring better than Shadow of the Colossus or is it too early to say? Alex – Final Furlong Out of nowhere, Alex produced this gem of an arcade game. Final Furlong sums up what arcade games can offer that consoles and PC's can't: huge peripherals. In this case, it's a massive plastic horse you must ride on. Alex insists that this is the best game with a named horse, but does one of many named racehorses really count? His favorite is called Miracle Thunder. Let us know what game you'd pick and which of the three you think should win in the comments below. Nate, Sebastian, Jordan, and Brock gather to discuss SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS, Team Ico's sophomore effort for Sony Japan Studio, which released in late 2005. We discuss realism in animation, videogames as a particularly poignant vehicle for tragedy, and minimalism in design. Sebastian joins a climbing gym, Jordan gets miffed when people misspell his name, and Brock proposes a jingle for the spoiler curtain.

There are really only a small handful of titles that are regularly bandied about as potential Best Game of All-Time, and 2005's Shadow of the Colossus is one of them. Created by Team ICO -- an internal group working out of Sony-owned Japan Studio -- Shadow of the Colossus is a truly breathtaking, gorgeous, clever, and admittedly contentious offering, one that has since migrated to PlayStation 3 (in 2011) and in completely remade form on PlayStation 4 (in 2018). Wander's mysterious, sullen, and melancholic journey is certainly one worth remembering, and his journey leaves us with many questions. So let's get into it without further delay. The third of the launch episodes of the Past Play Gaming Podcast looks back on a unique and emotionally charged adventure puzzler- Shadow of the Colossus, developed originally by Team Ico and remade by Bluepoint Games.Topics include, horse riding for dummies, giving each colossus the most cringe-worthy nickname possible, and why this game is just like Super Mario. Intriguing, no?**Note on audio quality: You may be able to hear a tapping noise in our first batch of episodes. It is our first time recording something like this but we are doing what we can to fix this in future. In 99.9% of cases it does not interfere with our voices but we recognize it can be frustrating in the background. In our testing the noise was almost unnoticeable when not using head/earphones so give that a try if you find it distracting.**Like what you hear? What happens when you find yourself in a beautiful world as a silent protagonist and a non-verbal story? You _might_ end up getting into a "games as art" discussion with a special guest Nick! We're talking about fans of the works of Team ICO (i.e. ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian)! Fortunately, we have [Nick Suttner](https://twitter.com/nsuttner), author of [the Boss Fight Books book on the subject](https://bossfightbooks.com/products/shadow-of-the-colossus-by-nick-suttner) to help us out! ## Episode Outline ### Fandom Facts **History and Origins:** > Team Ico was a Japanese video game development studio led by game designer Fumito Ueda. It was part of Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Studio's Product Development Department #1, and had developed the games _Ico_ and _Shadow of the Colossus_, both for the PlayStation 2. The team was also initially responsible for _The Last Guardian_ before Ueda's departure in 2011 and the formation of a new company taking over development in 2014. Their games are usually characterized by minimalist storytelling and gameplay, an atmospheric use of bloom and high dynamic range rendering (HDR) lighting, and use of fictional languages. Their products are frequently cited as examples of video games as an art form. > > — [Wikipedia - Team Ico](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_Ico) **Search Data:** Based on worldwide search data, it looks like [the biggest peaks of interest in the games has already passed](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&geo=US&q=%2Fm%2F05zht0,%2Fm%2F0h53djf,%2Fm%2F06404g0). _Shadow of the Colossus_ is by far the most popular of the games and has had spikes in interest around October 2005 (its release date) and again in February 2018 (remake of the original). Interest in _The Last Guardian_ similarly spikes around its release date: December 2016. The top ten countries, by search volume, are as follows for the different games: - _Shadow of the Colossus_: Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Japan, Argentina, El Salvador, Canada, Uruguay, Mexico, Spain (United States is 11th) - _The Last Guardian_: Chile, Brazil, Canada, United Kingdom, Spain, Norway, Puerto Rico, Portugal, United States, New Zealand ### Famous Last Words: [Last Episode](http://fanthropological.com/shrek) **G:** Were fans thrilled to have the game featured in Adam Sandler's _Rain over me_? **T:** What are the odds of any of the Team Ico characters showing up in the new Smash? **Z:** Is there a fan-made concept album where each track represents one of the Colossi you fight in the game? **Alicia:** Do you like games? ### Main Discussion **Topics covered in this episode:** TBD ### Spotlight: [Nomad Colossus (Youtube)](https://www.youtube.com/user/Nomad0168/featured) > _Shadow of the Colossus_ first came out in 2005. Since then, millions of people have played the beloved PS2 game, driven by its lonesome charm, moved by its mysterious ending. But one man never stopped playing, as a result, he's found stuff that the game's creators never intended anyone to see. > > The player in question is Michael Lambert, and he's been excavating Shadow of the Colossus for the last four years on his Nomad Colossus YouTube channel. He's used glitches, external software exploits, and excursions into the bowels of SOTC's game code to extensively map the hidden places, unused ideas and unheard music tucked away in the game's hidden corners. With the hours he's spent inside the game, it's entirely possible that Lambert—along with the secret hunters Dark0ssX, Pikol, WWWArea who mentored him—might know Shadow of the Colossus better than lead creator Fumito Ueda and the other men and women who created it. > — [Kotaku - Meet the Hacker Who's Spent Six Years Inside Shadow Of The Colossus](https://kotaku.com/meet-the-hacker-whos-spent-four-years-inside-shadow-of-1685039483) ### Famous Last Words Our chance (and yours, if you're watching on [twitc
What is touted as one of the greatest games of all time is back for a full remake on PS4: Shadow of the Colossus. We play through half of it and share our first and returning impressions on this game that wasn't a huge hit, but created a cult following for years to come. Team Ico created this game after their first game, Ico. They then went on to create The Last Guardian that released last year. We also play the new indie title Aegis Defenders which combines platforming with tower defense elements. We had them on the podcast in episode 131 and we're quite impressed with the final outcome. We also have some positive words to say after diving deeper into the story on Celeste. In the news this week, Supercell makes a bunch of money without releasing a new game, Overwatch League brings on their first female player and Atari is getting into cryptocurrency. We also talk about the possible Spyro the Dragon Remaster coming later this year and some crazy stories surrounding PlayerUnknown's: Battlegrounds. Here's the link to our naked man conversation. Our discussion is all about evolving video game franchises. We look at games like Fortnite and Borderlands and how they evolved over time before they even launched. We also look at post-launch changes with games like Far Cry and Saint's Row. Each one had its ups and downs but it's interesting to explore the inner workings of a studio and why they make the decisions they make when building a game. - Interludio musical: Dissidia Final Fantasy NT – God in fire – A qué estamos jugando: Bloodborne y Rocket League (Switch). – La cifra – Comentarios y despedida
Hoy hablamos de arte. Pura y simplemente arte. Una trilogía bella y evocadora, compuesta por los títulos ICO, SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS y THE LAST GUARDIAN. Edita, conduce y dirige: Antonio Runa. Bienvenidos a La Órbita de Endor (Lode). Gracias por elegirnos una semana más. Ilustración de Pepe Mediavilla realizada por Marta Nael - (c) Ediciones Babylon. Recorded on the one year anniversary of The Best Games Period and a handful of days away from the release of The Last Guardian - we present a lengthy, in-depth look at Team ICO's Shadow of the Colossus. The 2005 PlayStation 2 title carried the spirit of ICO into a large open-world full of magic, danger, and beauty. Though not glowingly received by critics at the time, regard for the third-person adventure game seems to have grown over the years in an odd case of a game becoming better over time. Is this a case of collectively wearing rose-colored glasses or have people been slowly coming around on the tale of a man meddling with forces beyond his understanding?
