When we are able to learn that we are not the same as what happens to us, that we are not the same as how people treat us, then our potential becomes limitless. However, when we internalize these experiences and confuse them with our identity, the narratives end up becoming a prison. I'm blown away by the impact reThinkIt! has had on kids and consequently their school environment. It's great from a school P&L standpoint, but what's more important is the human impact. As a society, what would we pay to reduce or eliminate teen suicide and school shootings? How about teen depression? It seems an obvious choice that the government would mandate reThinkIt! in every single public school. Since we aren't there yet, let's leverage the power of Word of Moms and Dads and PTA's to start demanding it. I'm very intrigued by reThinkIt! being offered through employee benefit programs to help employees' kids. It seems like a really creative solution, and I haven't seen many employee benefits targeted to employees' kids before. I'm curious how much presenteeism is caused by parents being distracted at work with worries about their kids, and how much that loss in productivity would lessen if kids were equipped with a tool they trusted to help them navigate their emotions. The time teachers spend disciplining students in the classroom, from the “Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation/Scholastic Teacher Survey” says: 53% of teachers reported they would like to spend less time disciplining students; Teachers reported they spend 4 hours out of their 7.5 hour day disciplining students in their classrooms. Report from the American School Counselors Association (ASCA), “State-by-State Student-to-Counselor Ratio Maps By School District” by Pooja Patel and Melissa Clinedinst. The ASCA's data in this report was commissioned for the district-level student-to-counselor ratios to provided and further inform policy discussions at the local, state, and federal level about the need to hire, train, and equip more school counselors. “ASCA recommends that schools strive to maintain a ratio of no more than 250 students per counselor. In 2015–16, only two states, Vermont and New Hampshire, had average ratios that met this standard. There are several additional data points worth noting that also suggest a critical lack of access to school counseling assistance for students nationwide.” 1) The national average during this time (2015 - 2016) was 470 students per one counselor (470:1), nearly double the recommended ratio. 2) Nearly one in five students don't have access to a school counselor, leaving approximately 8 million students without access to proper counseling support. 3) 1.7 million students go to a school with a police officer but no counselors. While the 250 students to 1 school counselor ratio (250:1) has been a long-time recognized standard that various education and counseling industry organizations accepted, to be fair, it should be noted there is debate that this number lacks evidence-based research. I had only taken one burlesque dance class and was looking for some way to make my burly dreams come true. Theresa works for Mental Health America (MHA) to help people across the nation have greater access to mental health care through policy and programming. Along with supporting MHA’s federal and state policy agenda, Theresa manages various programs including MHA Screening, The State of Mental Health in America, and Workplace Wellness. Theresa’s also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Her clinical experience focused on working with children and adults with serious mental illness, homelessness, dual diagnosis treatment, and early intervention of psychosis. And, finally, Theresa co-hosts Mental Health America’s podcast called In the Open. It's where Theresa and her co-host, America, have open conversations about mental health. A positive and fearless attitude can take you far, says Theresa Nguyen. She was first diagnosed with kidney failure at the age of 14. She has traveled around the world and she explains how her experience with kidney failure has made her very grateful and aware of how tending to her illness is just a way of life, medication and all. In this talk, she describes how she handles day-to-day aspects of living with an illness while being active and not giving into fear. She is an inspiration - a success at work, in her personal life and a model of how you can live your life to the fullest with a positive attitude!
Saigon Sisters Restaurant, the latest addition to the Fulton River District’s lively restaurant scene, is run by Vietnamese sisters, Mary Nguyen Aregoni and Theresa Nguyen, along with their mother, Mama Suu. The main inspiration for beginning their business came from influential family members. Mama Suu and the sisters’ grandmother began as successful entrepreneurs in Vietnam, growing an open-market grocery into a large food market operation that served as the main supplier to nearby embassies. After the Nguyen family moved to the United States, Mama Suu encouraged her daughters to achieve their goals and do what they love, which eventually happened to be following in her footsteps. The original Saigon Sisters opened as a booth at nearby Chicago French Market in December 2009, and now proudly expands to a second location and full-service restaurant.
