Unlocking the Secrets to Fast-Tracking Your Law Firm's Success Through Smart Staffing

Do you need some help in hiring for your law firm? Are you unsure what roles you need filled? In this podcast episode, Jim and Tyson welcome Brett Trembly, CEO and co-founder of Get Staffed Up. He discusses his new book "24 Months to Freedom: How Modern Law Firms Use Smarter Staffing Solutions to Fast Track Their Way to Success." The book lists seven crucial positions to hire that every law firm needs. In order to have a successful law firm, you need the right people. You need to have an adequate amount of staff who are skilled in what they do. One of the most important roles to fill is that of an executive assistant. Without an executive assistant, many attorneys take on much more tasks in their day to day schedule. This ultimately takes away from what they need to do. An executive assistant wears many hats in a law firm. The role includes answering phones, preparing documents and bookkeeping. It is a multi-dimensional role that helps keep law firms running. Many attorneys have a fear of hiring and will stall in getting it done. Sometimes this comes down to money. Brett speaks to not needing tens of thousands of dollars in the bank to hire. As long as there is enough to pay someone for the first 2 weeks, that is when it is time to hire. Hiring someone is not going to cost you money, but it will make you money. It will allow an attorney to focus on the important work, bring in more clients and therefore bring in more money.Every successful law firm needs to have a full proof intake system, which includes a few different positions. ➡️ One is a receptionist, who will answer phones and take messages. A receptionist is usually the first person a potential client will interact with, so this individual needs to be very well rounded. Answering the phones in a swift and quick manner is crucial to ensuring that potential clients are provided with what they need. If a firm does not have a receptionist, there is much opportunity to lose out on new clients. ➡️Hiring an intake specialist is another position that is included in the intake process. This individual will know the process of the law firm in and out and will have some legal knowledge as well. They screen clients to ensure they are the right fit, refer clients to other firms when they are not and will set up  consultations for attorneys. These two positions not only add value to a firm but allow attorneys to focus on the core work.Brett provides a few tips to help firms hire the right people. One great tip is to give potential candidates practical tests to see if they can not only handle the job but show off their skills and experience. For example, if you are hiring for an intake specialist role, do a quick role play scenario of a client screening call. This way, the candidate can show you in real time how they would handle that situation and what skills they would use to complete a successful call. Take a listen to learn more about who to hire and how to hire for a law firm!6:30 Hiring an executive assistant10:14 The fear that law firms have when hiring11:27 The misconception of waiting to hire13:23 The importance of hiring a full-time dedicated receptionist20:23 Giving candidates a testJim's Hack: Have quarterly meetings with each team member to have conversations on a variety of things. This really shows the effort made to keep tabs on employees and discuss important aspects of one's career, whether it be goals or growth. These conversations also help with understanding what is and isn't working for a firm from the eyes of an employee.Brett's Tip: Force yourself to take time off with your family. If you find you are more stressed when you return to work, that means you have more things to work on to address either your stress or your ways of working.Tyson's Tip: Have reference checks for hiring new people. They provide additional information that help get the right people in the right roles. It does add a little more time to the hiring process, but it is really worth it in the end.

Stacy and Tracy help listeners understand why some people struggle with food, eating and body image, especially during the Holidays.     Why do people experience chaos around food, especially during the Holidays? Internal Stressors = Thoughts that are distressing. 60% of the time, people are thinking: What did I eat? What will I eat? What do I look like? What do I weigh? External Stressors = Situations or events that happen in the world that are distressing Family togetherness when family members make negative comments Isolation from family or friends during the time of expected togetherness Financial concerns Busy Schedules, School and Work Returning home from college during the holidays and facing possible judgment Family comments about how your body has changed (appearance-related comments) COVID-19 and the impact of isolation on our body shape and size TIP: Be aware of / avoid any appearance-related comments (i.e. “You’ve got that COVID-19” or “You look great…you’ve lost weight”) TIP: Focus your comments on the person, and who they are (vs. what they look like) Food-Related Stressors: Family Comments about Food “I shouldn’t be eating this” or “Today is my cheat day” TIP: Enjoy the food and the company without excessive comments or pressure on yourself or others “What you’re eating doesn’t look very good” or “You can really put it away” TIP: Be mindful of your comments on someone else’s eating experiences “You need to eat more (or less)” TIP: Be supportive! Keep your loved ones out of the spotlight “I’ll need to work this meal off later” TIP: Keep the focus off the effects of the food – appreciate food and family “I’ll starve myself for the big meal, then go to town eating.” TIP: This effects blood sugar, and sets us up for overeating later. It’s best to regulate your eating all the time to keep blood sugar regulated.   Fear Foods: Look at the Pie! Pie Thought #1: “I’m afraid of the pie.” Pie Thought #2: “I never get pie. I want pie!” Pie Thought #3: “This pie will make me gain weight” Pie Thought #4: “This pie will make me behave in ways I don’t want!” Pie Thought #5: “Am I expected to eat this pie?” Pie Thought #6: “Who made the pie? What’s in it?” Pie Thought #7: “What will people think if they see me eating the pie?” Pie Thought #8: “Someone expects me to eat this pie now!” Pie Thought #9: “Maybe this pie isn’t so bad…it has fruit in it.” Pie Thought #10: “What are the ingredients? Is the pie safe?” Pie Thought #11: “I’ll avoid the unhealthy crust” TIPS to handle internal, external and food-related chaos TIP: Attend to your body’s actual experience of hunger and fullness TIP: Speak the truth about your hunger and fullness TIP: Think about and enforce your own food boundaries TIP: Honor and respect your own food choices, and the choices of others TIP: Empower each other to make our own wise choices with food TIP: Stay on your own plate! TIP: Know who is at your table and cope ahead (try not to “catastrophize”) TIP: Have a safety plan and / or a support person to contact TIP: Take a breath and consider leaving the area for a bit TIP: Talk yourself through it like a best friend would TIP: View yourself through a compassionate, non-judgmental lens – be kind to yourself! Bonus Tips Stay out of the WEB Avoid comments about Weight Avoid comments about Eating Behaviors Avoid comments about body weight, size and shape Approach your loved ones for support Practice body attunement, noticing hunger and fullness and responding appropriately Set and keep food boundaries Be non-judgmental, compassionate and flexible Practice mindfulness for flexibility (our pets can teach us!) Workloads and expectations are increasing. It's not a cliché, it's a fact. It's the single biggest (confidential) complaint that I hear when spending time with companies. Before the COVID shutdown, I was speaking at a conference in Florida, and in the short Q&A at the end of my talk a man stood and said “We are doing more with less. We have fewer people than ever, but our project load continues to increase. However, the quality of our work is not allowed to suffer. What should I do?” Great question. Tough question. The first thing to realize is that if this is how you feel, you're not alone. At all. In fact, you're the norm. Many recent studies have explored the increasing workload and simultaneously decreasing engagement of employees, and the trend is frightening. Creative pros have never been more busy, and simultaneously less engaged with their work. One study found that 75% of creatives believe they are not living up to their full creative potential. Some say the fastest growing contingency in the workplace is a group being dubbed “malicious cooperatives”. They do what they need to in order to keep their job, but they secretly harbor hope that their company will fail. Huh? So what are some practical ways to deal with the increasing workload expectations and decreasing resources? Know when to celebrate. It's hard to be thrilled at the completion of a project when the very next instant your manager unloads a new pile of expectations on you. When super busy, celebration is often the first thing to go because it seems so… unnecessary. But it's not! It's crucial to have milestones that you can point to both for your own sense of accomplishment and for the sake of your team's sense of progress. It also helps keep your work and your days from blending together into one long, run-on sentence. Tip: Establish when you will celebrate the work that you've accomplished, and stick to your plan. Know where you'll begin. When dealing with creative work – turning your thoughts into value – it's sometimes difficult to find the edges. It's hard to know exactly when something is good enough, because there's always room for improvement. Similarly, it's challenging to get started on your work, because you're often making it up as you go along. Thus, I'd encourage you (and your team) to always end your work each day with a clear understanding of where you'll pick it up the next. That way you have a natural point of traction to help you get started. Tip: Choose at the end of each work day where and how you'll begin the work tomorrow. Don't be afraid to talk about the pressure. No one likes to be seen as a whiner, so sometimes these unseen (but strongly felt) pressures can stay locked up inside because we don't want to burden others. However, simply creating an environment of permission to talk about the pressure can help mitigate it. No, the work isn't going to go away, but if everyone (including your manager) is looped in on the team dynamic then it can sometimes help provide context for how to overcome it. Tip: Have frequent conversations about how you feel about the work and the pressure, and be brutally honest. The workload isn't going away. This isn't just a temporary artifact of a struggling economy, it's mass-scale experimentation with a new way to do business remotely in the connected economy. To thrive moving forward, you and I need to develop some tools to deal with the pressure. This episode is sponsored by Indeed. MINDSET Every 3-6 months write out your money story. Forgive any part of your money story that isn't serving you, and let it go! Rewrite your new money story, with your positive wealth thoughts and focus on them. TIP: If you've just started a new money mindset, do this practice monthly, or as often as you feel you need to. Practice this wealth habit more frequently - especially in the beginning - it can be very helpful and transformative in improving your money story. TIP: Have a special money mindset or abundance journal. You can write out your money mindset practice in it, and also journal all the ways that money or abundance has come to you: like when I found a quarter and when I received the emails from my pervious client + employer.  [11:05] #2. SAVING You can automate your savings through your bank. A savings account is always a winning money management strategy, and financial experts and advisors will always tell you to be saving. TIP: Know what you're saving for. Having an intention for your money is very important. You want to know what you're saving for, and make sure it's something meaningful to you. TIP: If saving is tough for you, keep coming back to WHY you're saving/what you're saving for. Visit your savings account and watch your money grow! It will help you get more excited about what you're saving for. It's like having a date with your money. [11:45] #3. GRATITUDE Write out 3-5 things you're grateful for each day. Keep this running gratitude list in your abundance journal where you can read it often. Circulating, investing, and generating your money should be celebrated! Thank money for allowing you to afford all the things you have in your life. Look around you, abundance is everywhere! TIP: You don't have to just write about money in your gratitude journal. Write about everything and anything you're grateful for, and be specific. Why are you grateful for this person/place/thing/experience? TIP: Gratitude is a money magnifier!Being grateful attracts more of what you're grateful for; this helps magnify everything you love in your life! Because remember, what you focus on e x p a n d s ! Welcome to Season 3! Episode 54: Is A "Friendraiser" a Waste of Time? Is A Friendraiser a Waste of Time? Are you wasting time and money on “friendraisers” that barely generate any donors or volunteers? In this episode, we are going to chat about the goal and purpose of a friendraiser. What is a Friendraiser Let’s first define what a friendraiser is. It’s a non-ask event. No request for funding. It’s a way to educate guests on the great work your organization is doing but in a friendly way, a casual way. And what I am about to say is really important, there is no cost to attend a friendraiser. It’s free. However, while I’m suggesting to you that the event be casual in nature, they do serve a very important purpose for your organization. And there are specific reasons you want to host this type of event. Do you know what they are? Well, i got good news. I’m going to tell you. There are 6 reasons you need to be hosting several “friendraisers” throughout the year. But first let’s talk about what a “friendraiser” looks like in regards to how they are organized and logistics, etc. A “friendraiser” is typically a small, intimate gathering held in someone’s home. Perhaps a board member or supporter host the event. The host invites friends, family and colleagues to attend. The list of attendees is usually small, 15 to 20 people. Maybe there are light appetizers, tea and coffee served. The event is about an hour in length. Fifteen to 20 minutes of the event is spent on someone from the organization, usually the Executive Director, addressing the crowd in an informal on the mission of the organization. Now that we know the logistics, let’s dive into the reasons to host one that will clearly show why they are NOT a waste of time. Reason #1 Build awareness about your organization. I do believe with all my heart that this is the primary reason you should host this type of event. If you attempt to host one of these events with a greedy heart and mind, I think it will be evident to the guests. Your aim is to share your mission, stats, impact stories, and testimonials to those in attendance. The hope is the guests will learn about your organization and the values will be aligned. The next reason has to do with capturing leads to convert leads into donors and volunteers. This leads me to reason #2 Reason #2 Recruit volunteers to help support your programs and services This one is pretty straight forward. If your organization is volunteer run or heavily assisted, hosting a friendraiser can be a fantastic way to grow your volunteer base. During your presentation, you can talk about ways to volunteer and the impact volunteering has on the organization. Tip: Have a way to capture names of those showing interest in volunteering. It can be as simple as a sign-up sheet that gets passed around the room during the presentation. Reason #3 Recruit for board members For this one, it’s not going to be easy to spot a potential board member in the room while hosting one of these friendraisers. For this, you’ll have to rely on the host to provide you information about each guest and ask your host to be sure to tell you if there is a guest that’s going to be present that’s an ideal candidate for becoming a board member. Reason #4 Identify folks willing to host a friendraiser in their home Something I believe strongly is people want to help! There’s no better or easier way for someone to help your organization then by hosting a friendraiser in their home. Again, during your presentation, ask who might be interested in helping to spread the word and host an event “just like this” in their home. Again, send around a sign-up sheet for those who are interested. Remind your potential host that the event they are attending tonight is a great example of how easy it can be and add that they may want to ask the person who invited them for tips and tricks on how to invite and host. In fact, sometimes a host will introduce the ED of

The Keto Kamp Podcast With Ben Azadi

Today, I am lucky to have here with me a profound and highly-driven keto advocate from the medical field, Dr. Ken Berry. Although his practice is not yet warmly accepted in our society today, he is firm on his stand when it comes to the ketogenic diet. Dr. Berry is the first physician in the family. It was always his childhood dream. At the age of 13, he started having severe migraines and thought he would not be fit for a medical doctor’s lifestyle. However, his condition got better during his college days and hoped that he could finally fulfill his dream. He was determined to change his way of eating when he was obese and became prediabetec at the age of 35. He knew his stressful lifestyle coupled with unhealthy eating habits contributed to his condition. Dr. Berry was further challenged to make a change in order to help his critically ill patients. His goal is to spread the truth about the ketogenic diet. Dr. Berry had already published a book entitled, “Lies My Doctor Told Me” and is increasing his reach with the help of social media channels. In this episode, Dr. Berry and I talked about ketogenic diet, type 2 diabetes, the 3 pillars of health and nutrition, exercise and more. He shared his journey with living his best life starting with the paleo diet then transitioning to low-carb diet and finally the ketogenic diet. He also shed some light as to why ketogenic diet doesn’t work for other people. Moreover, tips and strategies were shared on how to get the most out of the keto diet. Tune in! [07:56] The 3 Pillars of Health and Nutrition He want back to dig up his medical books and lecture notes to refresh his knowledge on his nutrition training. After reading up on the materials that he was able to retrieve, he was reminded that the foundation of health is knowledge and understanding of human nutrition.  The 3 Pillars of Health and Nutrition:  1. Eat lots of whole grain 2. Don’t eat any saturated fat. 3. Jog. [09:32] The Unexpected Weight Gain He has an exceptional training background when it comes to parenteral nutrition. However, he admits that, when it comes to feeding a healthy human being in a disease-preventive way, he was clueless. Dr. Berry guided himself with the 3 pillars and applied it in his daily life.  Despite his consistent hard work for 2 months, he still gained 5-10 pounds. [10:25] Thinking Outside The Medical Doctor Box  Read different works on nutrition: Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution by Robert Atkins The Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson He tried this new knowledge on himself starting with paleo and transitioned to a low-carb diet which got him better but still far from his health goal. Immediately felt better, lost weight, decreased inflammation. He then finally tried ketogenic diet and after 2 months he thought to offer it to his morbidly obese patients, many of which are scheduled for a gastric bypass which is a risky procedure. His patients started noticing his transformation and were curious about what he was doing. He finally recommended the ketogenic diet to his patients with the worst case of morbid obesity and they all started getting better. [12:43] Dr. Berry’s Patients on Keto Diet He monitors his patients closely since the diet was presumed to be dangerous. After 1 month, his patients would come back asking if they could do it for a longer period of time. They loved the diet and was very happy with the results Many patients, who cancelled their bariatric surgery, were coming to him because they wanted to lose fat naturally. He was very glad he found a tool that could help many others when the only option most of them had before was a bariatric surgery. He only recommended it to his sickest patients [16:28] Type 2 Diabetes and the Ketogenic Diet Type 2 Diabetes is not a disease. It is one of the many ways how poison in your diet can manifest itself. Poisons:  Sugar Grains Industrial seed oils Removing these poisons from the diet results to type 2 diabetes going away. [18:42] Truth about EBM: Evidence-Based Medicine or Eminence-Based Diet American Diabetes Association (ADA) claims their diet recommendation is based on zero research and it’s based on expert consensus. Dr. Berry, on the other hand, believes in true evidence based medicine (EBM) but oftentimes, no meaningful research is done on a topic which makes EBM mean something else, “Eminence Based Diet” Leading authorities in the medical field decide what is considered EBM as standard of care and there are many instances in history wherein these EBM, such as lobotomy and provision of Valium to premenopausal women, have been further proven to be dangerous and ineffective. [22:10] What Led Him to His Life Mission Dr. Berry knew he was called to reverse type 2 diabetes and obesity. His wife, Neisha, an active social media user, asked him, “How many patients do you help a day in the clinic?” and “How many patients can you help on social media?”. He had no social media presence back then other than Facebook. His wife’s question made him realize he had a big goal social media can give him a bigger platform. Dr. Berry started with creating a YouTube channel and other social media accounts [26:28] Elevated A1C VS. Elevated LDL “An elevated A1C is a shotgun pointed at your heart and an elevated LDL might be a BB gun pointed at your arm”. After reading more research on LDL, Dr. Berry says it is not a risk factor.  Elevated cholesterol and elevated LDL does not increase your risk of heart attack or stroke. This elevation may be caused by an inflammation in your body and it is it’s attempt of  filling in the damage done in your arteries. Your body naturally makes cholesterol. Even the brain has its own cholesterol manufacturing process. An elevated A1C, elevated triglyceride level, and a low HDL level are more important markers than an elevated LDL. Doctors who are concerned with elevated cholesterol are already 10 years behind on their readings while doctors who are alarmed by elevated LDL are 3-5 years behind. American Heart Association’s (AHA/ACC) cardiac risk calculator does not factor in the LDL level but uses triglyceride and HDL levels. [32:33] Recommendation for the Use of Statins Recommendation for the use of statins will lower LDL level but will not positively influence your 10-year cardiac risk. The medical community continues to promote the use of statins because their paradigm has not yet shifted. Some medical practitioners are gaining awareness when it comes to this issue Many doctors are still relying on recommendations given by the AHA. However, big companies and corporations heavily influence the information distributed by the association We are slowly killing ourselves by taking harmful medication [36:05] Social Media is the Key Dr. Berry intends to use of social media to help spread the word and tell people to stop poisoning themselves. People are dying everyday because of belief on a false paradigm. Social media helps him educate and tell people to stop comiting suicide and stop letting your doctors commit homicide. Being loud and obnoxious about the information will help prevent unnecessary deaths. [37:59] The Story of Dr. Simon Weiss The quote: “The way you judge someone’s stature in the medical community is the length of their white coat” and a story on Dr. Simon Weiss which illustrates Dr. Ken Berry’s advocacy Back then doctors were seen as gentlemen and it was a common assumption that gentlemen are never dirty.  Mortality rate of women and children were high because of the childbirth fever caused by unsanitary practices of doctors. Dr. Weiss observed that in poorer areas where midwives facilitated child birth instead of doctors and women and children were not affected by childbirth fever because midwives do not handle dissections in the morgue. Dr. Weiss published his research but because of his short coat, he was not taken seriously by other doctors. The unsanitary practice went on for 70-80 years before another doctor discovered Dr. Weiss’ research and shed light unto it. It took another decade before more doctors caught on to the proper practice of handwashing. With this, Dr. Ken Berry stands firm with his belief on the ketogenic diet and is willing to take the risk that comes with it so that people can know the truth. [43:20] Overcoming the Powdered Butt Syndrome Powdered Butt Syndrome is when people, for example your senior, don’t take you seriously no matter what you say or evidence you show. A third party source may be helpful with conveying the information to your family and friends which is what many people do.  As with Dr. Berry, his videos takes a big part in encouraging people to listen and understand the truth about the ketogenic diet. [45:42] Why Ketogenic is Not Working for Other People? After enthusiastically getting in to keto, some people slack off and allow gradually themselves more and more carb loaded food items. This reduces fat loss and increases inflammation. People should have a friend, coach, that can re-check their diet Document what you’re eating and consult someone with knowledgeable on keto to figure out what you’re doing or eating wrong. Don’t easily trust and simply rely on what big food names claim when it comes to being healthy because there are loopholes they go through to make their products seem healthy enough. Big food corporations only care about making a profit and will do all things just to cut down on cost. [49:22] Dining in Restaurants Don’t be afraid to let restaurants know of the ingredients and food items that you’re avoiding in a keto diet.   Tip: Have a laminated small laminated information card stating that “I’m allergic to sugar in all forms, all grains, and the following oils. Please do not include it in my meals”.   As more people do this, big chain restaurants can go bankrupt or they can evolve to meet people’s need for real and safe human food. Be willing to go the extra penny for quality food. Accepting bad food because it’s cheap is as good as voting for it.   [51:53] PEO (Parent Essential Oils) Solution by Dr. Brian Peskin PEO Solution: Conquering Cancer, Diabetes and Heart Disease with Parent Essential Oils is the collaborative effort of Dr. Brian S. Peskin and Dr. Robert Jay Rowen.  Their combined insights will give you state-of-the-art science with new tools to easily become and remain lean-for-life, energized, and disease-free.    [52:19] Fat in a Cellular Level Every cell has a membrane and this membrane uses fat as integral part. Eating high fat food gives your body sufficient building blocks for building healthy cell membranes.   [52:50] Restaurants and Their Oil Use Study shows a plate of french fries cooked in canola oil resulted to 132 days of membrane inflammation. Restaurants use cooking oils, such as canola and soybean oil,  that easily oxidize and they don’t always change their cooking oils to cut down cost.  These oils become deadlier as they get reused and get absorbed by the food you eat.   [53:44] Consuming Healthy Oils As people develop healthier cell membranes, they can stay longer in the sun because they are now more able to form melanin.  This prevents them from easily getting sun burnt and help them develop a tan instead. Even cells of other organs have cell membranes and they also need fat to form and function well. Food habit of consuming industrial seed and vegetable oil will contribute to the activation of bad genes.   [55:16] Shopping for the Right Food Products Always read labels and check the ingredients of what you’re buying. If you’re not familiar with a word, search online what it is. “Generally Regarded As Safe” only means it won’t kill you quickly.   [56:42] Exercise and Weight Loss “Exercise is a terrible approach to weight loss. If you’re goal is to lose weight, joining the gym is a waste of time and money.” Meaningful research show that exercising and moving more is a terrible strategy to lose fat.  If you want to lose excess fat, change your diet.   [58:00] Experts (PhDs, Scientists, Dietitians, Nutritionists, and Doctors) on Keto as a Fad Diet Most of today’s experts have the same thinking with doctors back in Dr. Weiss’ time who did not believe that handwashing was essential. They have a hard time accepting the truth or admitting that they are wrong. One of the many reasons may be losing part of their (online) following. Some may be afraid of losing they research support and funding. It is ignorance to think it’s possible to calculate one’s specific caloric needs through weight, height, and gender. Big corporations pay experts like them to convince the consumer that it’s alright to consume bad food items because they packed in small containers. Beware of people who promote “Eat more, move less”.   [01:02:55] Patients Who Found Success in Keto The healthiest patients with the least chronic diseases are the ones who consume food products with the least amount of prohibited ingredients on the label. Eldest patient who passed away at 102 was in very good health, with an alert mind and a strong body. Majority of diet was made of vegetables and meat. Babies or kids who are fed by their parents with real whole foods did not develop eczema, allergies, and even acne. They consume one-ingredient food.   [01:05:33] What Dr. Berry Is Most Excited About We’re close to the tipping point of having the low-carb keto carnivore diet as a norm now more than how where we were back in the 70s or 80s. Nurse Jackie Eberstein, who worked closely with Dr. Robert Atkins, is continuing to raise awareness about the Low-Carb Ketogenic Diet. Know more here. Create a master travel list that contains just about every type of item you want to consider when packing for any type of trip. As per good KonMari practice, break it down into categories: clothing, shoes, accessories, necessary documents, toiletries, medications, and technology. Make it as detailed as possible for your particular travel needs. You certainly won’t be packing all these things for each trip, but it’s a good idea to review each time you pack. -Tip: A good strategy is to make copies of the list and put a copy in each suitcase. Having a copy of the list right there forces you to look at it and think through what you are packing without relying solely on your memory (while charging). store in plastic or laminate. If you forget something on a trip, write that item down on the packing list to continue to customize and remember frequently left objects. -Tip: Anyone who takes The Tidy Pledge receives a copy of an illustrated KonMari folding drawer liner and bonus travel KonMari Packing list, also available here. -Tip: Timing is key. Don’t wait to pack at the last minute. Especially if it’s a fun trip, it’s so much nicer to get ready in advance so you are relaxed on your journey. Scrambling around the night before a big trip is no fun. -Tip: Have your toiletries bag packed and ready to go. This is one time that having a few duplicates can be helpful. Your toiletries bag set up and in your suitcase can save lots of steps in packing. Just be sure to restock your supplies after each trip. -Tip: If you are trying to pack lightly, think in terms of “If I need this, could I get it there?” Most hotel bathrooms have all the basics stocked and some hotels now provide workout gear for you to borrow at many of their locations. -Tip: If you are sensitive to certain skin care products or someone who is very loyal to my favorite brands, please do invest in reusable toiletries bottlesthat you can fill with liquids. -Tip: The Serene Home in the New York Times regarding those bottles and their impact on the environment: NYT: Those Tiny Hotel Bottles are on Their Way Out -Tip: Pack outfits, not items. Think: top, bottom, socks, shoes accessories for each outfit. Don’t pack a top unless you know what bottoms, shoes, and accessories you will wear with it. Avoids getting to your destination with incomplete outfits. -Tip: Conversely, don’t pack outfits you probably won’t need. “What if” outfits can eat up lots of space. Yes, there might be a sudden unexpected cold snap, but pack for the “probably” and not the “maybe.” -Tip: Packing cubes can be very helpful in keeping things orderly. Buy a different colored set for each member of the family. In most cases, you’ll pack a cube based on type of object: socks in one, undies in another, tee shirts in another. Or, you can pack each one with a different complete outfit if that idea appeals to you. -Tip: Carry on packing: If your luggage doesn’t arrive with you, could you charge your phone, find your hotel, get your rental car, take needed meds, have enough money/credit cards to buy what you need? Those are the items that for sure should go in your carry on. With a little preparation, travel can be one of life’s greatest pleasures, full of memorable adventures and perfectly packed suitcases.
