"Never take nutrition advice from a fat doctor."When Dr. Ken Berry tweeted that, he received a lot of blowback, but trust him, he knows what he's saying. It is hard to listen to somebody when he can't even fix himself. In his mid-thirties, Dr. Berry was overweight and suffered from a wide range of health issues. As a family physician, he was aware of how terrible his nutritional advice were. And so, as part of his self-healing and his desire to help others to live healthy lives, he began to seek answers. In search of the optimal diet, the paleo-anthropological literature gave this clear answer: our ancestors ate fatty meats. This led him to the ketogenic diet. He made it a 30-day challenge at first, a temporary weight loss hack. He was losing a lot of weight, and his other medical problems – type-2 diabetes, chronic pains, severe reflux – we're all gone. He recommended that his patients try keto for 90 days and the results were consistent. They started losing weight. The chronic pains were getting better. No more heartburn. Reversing type 2 diabetes. Reversing fatty liver. These results all begged the same question: was it because of keto?Dr. Berry's passion for good health and the benefits of the ketogenic diet came with a price. It hasn't been easy. But he refuses to back down. As long as he gets to help humans to be healthy and not be crippled by disease, there is no stopping him.Episode quick guide:01:54 Dr. Ken Berry's background06:56 His search for optimal diet through paleo-anthropological literature18:35 The ketogenic journey31:26 Why the ketogenic diet is more than just a fad35:59 Improving one's health is improving the health of the planet42:45 Humans as carnivores throughout history49:19 The fad diet50:45 The mission for optimal health and the price he has to pay Get to know our guest:Dr. Ken Berry grew up in Texas, studied medicine in University of Tennessee and became a family physician. He shares his journey and lessons in his YouTube channel and he has written a book, “Lies My Doctor Told Me.”“You're a bad doctor if you're not thinking about every piece of advice you give, every single patient, you're not a good doctor and you need to come to grips with that. In this episode of Well Honestly, the ladies dig deep into the work of Dr Tony Hampton and uncover one of the major reasons many brown women globally aren't receiving the quality medical care that they need. What is the difference between a traditional doctor vs a functional doctor? According to the institute of functional medicine “the Functional Medicine model is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient's genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes.”During a traditional doctors appointment you'd meet with a physician and a few supportive medical team members to categorize your current level of health. The goal is to determine any concerning health issues and document the severity. We've all been there. You go in to see your doctor to learn about what is going on with your body and you take a few tests and leave with a new medication. The medication is usually prescribed to treat the symptoms and not the cause for the disruption of your health. That is where Functional Medicine comes in. Within this realm of treatment, the patient's health is the main priority and not the symptoms. The goal is to find the root of the problem and work as a team to restore the patient to optimal health and wellness. This is especially important during the pandemic. When breaking down why Black and brown people were impacted the most during the pandemic Dr. Hampton focused on communities of color dealing with stress, unbalanced cultural food choices, lack of sleep and even trauma. His well documented data set that allows him to outline health via the NEST model is shocking. (Featured below as ;) N is for Nutrition, which consists of whole, unprocessed foods with no sugar that are low-carb. “I tell them they can have ribs, but not with barbecue sauce.” E is for Exercise, even just walking or easy resistance exercises like pushups and squats at home. “It can be very hard to jog in some communities that are not safe.” S is for less Stress and more Sleep. “Sleep is so important to health but it can be hard to get it if you work the night shift or are under a lot of stress.” T is for “what you are Thinking” and for how you deal with Trauma in your life. “Instead of focusing on everything that is bad, look for the good, like the fact that it is a beautiful day and the sun is shining.” With the common notion that vitamin D is a game changing factor for minorities looking for preventative measures to dealing with Covid 19, Dr. Hampton pinpoints the safest levels of vitamin D consumption for most. This was pivotal information as he also mentioned that where you live can determine how long you live. It's best to know what elements your body produces naturally so that you can find ways to support your health and fill in the gaps to ensure you are functioning at your highest capacity. The aim is to be as physically , mentally and emotionally strong as possible.
In this weeks episode we talk about all of the things that impact what goes on during your wellness journey when directly impacted by Trauma. This is a powerful subject that that impacts a lot of us. See all the Healthcast's at https://www.biobalancehealth.com/healthcast-blog/ I have had hypothyroidism since I was 23, so I have had an interest in the thyroid gland, how it works and what treatments work and which ones don't for my entire adult life. In medical school in the 70s I was told that the thyroid was easy to diagnose, all you had to do was draw one test, the TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) and if the TSH was high, the thyroid was underactive, and if it was high the thyroid was overactive. Like many medical myths, this myth has been repeated to all medical students for the last 50 years without question, and subsequently millions of women have been under-treated or left untreated secondary to this Medical Lie repeated in every medical school. The information I reveal in this Healthcast will support the above allegations by way of my 40 years of experience as a physician, 50 years as a hypothyroid patient and the new book Lies My Doctor Told Me, by a physician named Dr. Berry, who uncovers all the outdated and untrue misinformation doctors were taught in medical school and residency. His book confirms what I have been telling patients, contrary to common medical practice, for over 40 years. He quotes and recommends my book, The Secret Female Hormone, to his readers because my book uncovers the lies about what hormones women need and don't need at menopause. Today I would like to base our discussion on the information in both of our books and support the true information with my medical experience. I hope you learn several things about one of the most important glands in your body, the Thyroid: Thyroid function is complicated and the most direct blood tests are the free T4 and free T3. These two tests are not infallible, but they generally parallel a patient's symptoms. Free T3 and Free T4 are repeatable which means the test is consistent. However, resolution of hypothyroid symptoms is the best sign that your thyroid is working properly. Following the TSH alone is absolutely the worst way to manage your thyroid! Thyroid disease predominantly attacks women and therefore is not a priority for medical doctors (DO Doctors of Osteopathy are trained with less sexual inequity than MDs) as most women's diseases are considered second class, because MDs still instruct their doctors that women are all crazy and that women are always looking for a way to lose weight without effort. These false negative generalizations remain as an undercurrent in medical education even though women are finally almost 50% of the medical school classes. For example, doctors often tell women they are imagining their symptoms if they are still hypothyroid when the doctor has given them inadequate doses of thyroid replacement medicines. Thyroid replacement must be taken in a specific way to be effective (alone on an empty stomach) and absorption in the intestines require good gut bacteria, adequate iodine, adequate sex hormones and normal cortisol to be completely effective. Endocrinologists are not your best choice in doctors to manage your thyroid. They are the specialty in charge of the thyroid, but their management hasn't changed in 50 years. Endocrine Society does the research that confirms and publishes articles that use multiple tests including free T3 and free T4, plus positive hypothyroid symptoms to diagnose hypothyroidism. Endocrine journals teach the opposite: they tell their doctors that the non-specialist order too many tests and criticizing the use of Armour Thyroid® the best replacement for women. Endocrinologists dismiss most female patients with true thyroid disease if their TSH is normal. My advice is to find a doctor who listens to and reviews your hypothyroid symptoms as well as your lab work including free T3 and free T4 tests. The best thyroid replacement is determined by your gender. Women respond better to Armour Thyroid® (pig thyroid) than Synthroid® or levothyroxine (generic Synthroid). Men respond better to the two synthetic thyroids, Synthroid® and levothyroxine better than natural thyroids. The thyroid gland is located in the lower third of the neck just above the collar bone. It is shaped like a large butterfly. If healthy, it isn't obvious when looking at someone except if it is abnormal and swollen which is what we call a goiter. The thyroid gland is essential to life and affects every cell in the body regulating cellular and physiologic rate of metabolism and burning of calories. When the thyroid gland is underactive it causes severe fatigue, weight gain, swelling throughout the body, memory loss, hair loss, dry skin, goiter, lack of the outer third of eyebrows, constipation, feels cold all the time when everyone else is comfortable, and memory loss and confusion. If the thyroid is not working at all it causes a condition called myxedema which results in severe swelling, confusion, and coma. The thyroid gland is the most important gland to human life. How the thyroid gland works is complicated. The pituitary gland in your brain is the quarterback making “calls” to the glands to stimulate all of the endocrine glands in the body. The pituitary gland produces TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) which stimulates the thyroid gland to make T3 and T4. There are 4 types of thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland, but the most important and plentiful are T3 and T4. These hormones produced by the thyroid gland enter the blood stream and travel to every cell, attach to thyroid receptors on cells, and turn the cells on to burn calories and make energy. T3 and T4 are made from one amino acid (a piece of a protein), called Tyrosine, and three or four Iodine molecules, so the intake of iodine is vital to the normal production of thyroid hormone. Each cell also requires ample iodine to facilitate the cell's receptor sites to bind and accept the thyroid hormone which stimulates the activity of the many types of cells to activate the production of heat and use of glucose. Deficient iodine in the diet is one of the reasons thyroid's fail. When the thyroid is deficient, the TSH increases to stimulate the thyroid gland to make more T4 and T3, but the TSH is not a very accurate or specific test to determine the activity of the thyroid gland. The actual T3 and T4 are much more accurate as long as you test the “free” T3 and T4, which is the active portion of both thyroid hormones. Measuring the free T3 and free T4 are the obvious ways to test the thyroid, I believe it is the initial however 40 years ago it took weeks to get these tests back, and they were very expensive. I believe it was because of the difficulty running the lab tests for free T3 and T4 in the 70s led to the belief that one test was all you need. This made sense then but not now when. I think of ordering TSH like looking in a mirror instead of looking directly at a person. Now the Free T3 and Free T4 as well as TSH are done by a multi-test machine and are quite affordable. There is no reason to continue the outdated method of diagnosing and managing thyroid with a mere TSH test anymore. However, endocrinologists (the “kings” of non-sex hormones) still teach this outdated method from the dark ages (the 60s and 70s). They generally don't talk to patients about how they feel and their remaining symptoms because it doesn't change their treatment plan. They draw only a TSH, while ignoring physical signs (dry skin, goiter, brittle nails, hair loss, swelling, loss of outer eyebrows), symptoms of hypothyroidism (fatigue, constipation, brittle nails, hair loss, depression, poor motivation, slow pulse, low blood pressure causing fainting when patients stand up, and many others. The obvious blood tests like free T3, Free T4, as well as high lipids (LDL cholesterol and triglycerides) when you have low hypothyroidism, iodine, and thyroid antibodies which can be elevated in the case of autoimmune hypothyroidism like Grave's disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Dr Berry in his book Lies My Doctor Told Me calls the use of only TSH as the “Lie” in the face of new information, more accurate testing and more complete examination. Primary care doctors should complete a symptom history, as well as take BP, pulse and Temperature, all of which in the case of hypothyroidism are low. Many research papers have been published since the 70s which tout the benefit of modern testing to diagnose and maintain patients on thyroid supplementation. It doesn't seem to be changing anything in the practice of endocrinology. It almost seems that doctors of endocrinology have closed their minds after medical school and refuse to change how they practice in the face of solid evidence. They are clearly angry when one of my patients sees them after I have diagnosed and treated them, and they are better! I have treated hundreds, thousands of women in my years of OBGYN practice and now replacing postmenopausal hormones with estradiol and testosterone pellets along with their thyroids. Diagnosis and treatment for hypothyroidism for physicians is relatively simple: Take an inventory of a patient's hypothyroidism symptoms, Ask about or test pulse, blood pressure and basal body temperature Draw Blood tests for free T3, free T4, TSH, iodine when necessary, thyroid peroxidase antibodies, thyroglobulin antibodies, Cardiac CRP and fasting lipids to diagnose hypothyroidism and determine the cause (low iodine, autoimmune thyroid disease, trauma, or unknown) and then treat the patient with the most effective thyroid replacement for their gender based on body weight. To manage established hypothyroid patients who are on thyroid replacement, lab should include free T3, free T4, and TSH. If blood is drawn in the am, no thyroid should be taken before the blood draw, skewing the results to high levels. When a patient is on thyroid replacement the TSH should be below 1. If it is over 1.0, then the patient isn't taking a high enough thyroid medication dose, or they are failing to absorb the medications. The If a patient's lab looks fairly normal, free T3 (3-4.5). and free T4 (1-2.5) with a TSH below 1, but their symptoms, signs or vital signs are still unchanged or only slightly changed the patient may be resistant to the medication, may be lacking iodine, or may have malabsorption in the intestines. Endocrinologists stop increasing dosage when the TSH is below 4.5 the normal for patients not on thyroid, no matter how the patient feels. There is yet another problem with receiving a valid diagnosis of hypothyroidism. The thyroid lab tests have been lowering ever since the beginning of the last decade. When I noticed that the range for women's thyroid free hormones free t3 and free t4 were decreasing every year, I talked to two of the large labs in our area, Labcorp and Quest. They had no answer for me. It wasn't until this year (2021) that I discovered how they determine the reference range, which is the “ideal range” of free T3 and Free T4. The labs have changed from the expensive process of testing young healthy women who have no symptoms of hypothyroidism and normal vital signs, to the short cut of using all the results they obtain from all the patients who get their blood drawn in their lab. This isn't statistically valid because most of the patients getting thyroids tested are sick or have pre-existing diseases that alter the thyroid level. , That is shocking to me and of course the blood levels of ill patient are lower than they should be because when you are sick your thyroid conserves energy by shutting down and becoming hypothyroid during the illness. My answer to using this abnormal sample of patients to determine desirable thyroid levels I go by the levels of free T3 and Free T4 that were reported by the labs over a decade ago, those listed three paragraphs above. My patients are so grateful that I have diagnosed and treated their lifelong symptoms and fatigue as well as depression and obesity. Many had already developed other diseases because of their thyroid not being replaced, and diagnosis delayed, but they are still grateful that I cared enough to ask about their symptoms and vital signs. Medical doctors should make a diagnose based on the interview with the patient and obvious physical signs of disease (LIKE GOITER) 90% of the time, and lab work and physical exam the other 10%. Somewhere in the last 50 years we have lost the art of communication in medicine and most doctors have shut their minds off to new information after they left medical school. I am not proud of the disintegration of my profession, but I do wish we would choose inquisitive and creative people to be doctors with good communication and assessment skills in the future, which would greatly improve the profession.

You can add value to the lives of other people if you choose to believe in yourself, in your passion, and the knowledge you have built through years of learning and experience. “If you don't start a Youtube channel and share your value with the people, then you're basically withholding value from the world.” -Dr. Ken Berry In this Episode: “What if you could help 3500 people a day, wouldn't that be awesome?” What patients actually want to hear and how exactly they would like to hear it from you The two equally important jobs of a healthcare practitioner, and how these jobs can provide VALUE to the world What attracts people to want more of what you have to offer and keep them glued to your videos The thoughts healthcare providers SHOULD NOT be thinking when they post videos on Youtube Episode Resources: https://www.amazon.com/Lies-My-Doctor-Told-Me/dp/0999090518 (Lies My Doctor Told Me: Medical Myths That Can Harm Your Health by Dr. Ken Berry) http://healthcarebusinesssecrets.com/insider (Healthcare Business Secrets: Free Group) Connect with Dr. Ken Berry: https://www.facebook.com/kendberry.md/ (Facebook) https://www.instagram.com/kendberry.md/?hl=en (Instagram) https://drberry.com/ (Website) https://www.youtube.com/user/KenDBerry (Youtube) https://twitter.com/KenDBerryMD?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor (Twitter) Connect with James Neilson-Watt: https://www.facebook.com/healthcarepracticemastery/ (Facebook) https://instagram.com/jamesneilsonwatt?igshid=rgepu995d6ll (Instagram) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpXTh0-w1U1pt8cvx75Z0Hg (Youtube) https://www.healthcarebusinesssecrets.com/ (Website )
It starts and ends with absolute degeneracy. But, in between questionable talk regarding various mammals, and a historic round of 2 Truths 1 Lie, there's actual serious conversation! In her second episode on regenerative thinking, Christine delicately addresses human health from the perspectives of regenerative thinking, and her own history. Where does our knowledge of human nutrition come from? How much of our common understanding is actually scientific? How do our philosophies regarding reproduction reflect our humanity and humanness? Erica then discusses her experience with the practices advocated by Wim Hof.With references to Primus, Murder She Wrote, Tolkien, The Mandalorian, 30 Coins, and apologies to the Homesteady Podcast and the Justin Rhodes show (both of which are highly recommended).Further Information can be found:Lies My Doctor Told Me by Dr. Ken BerryThe Complete Guide to Fasting bu Dr. Jason FungWeston Price Foundation https://www.westonaprice.org/The Wim Hof Method https://www.wimhofmethod.com/Find us on Instagram! Welcome to Protecting Your Nest. Dr. Ken Berry, author of Lies My Doctor Told Me, is a practicing physician in a rural town in Tennessee. For over a decade, he’s been fighting the epidemics of Obesity, Insulin Resistance, and Type 2 Diabetes one patient at a time. See the links below for more information on his book or to see Dr. Berry’s website and social media accounts. The discussion opens with the question, “what constitutes the real human diet?” Is there a proper human diet? That is, is there a general nutritional spectrum that humans must eat within in order to stay in optimal health? In discussing this topic, the related findings of paleo-anthropology are brought to bear. Next, the discussion turns to the origin of the food pyramid and the USDA dietary guidelines. What forces were involved in shaping these highly influential governmental recommendations? Who decided that eating saturated fat is unhealthy? These questions are talked about in depth. Other topics discussed in this episode include carbohydrate withdrawal, food addiction, the keto flu, salt, hyperinsulinemia, and fiber. Thank you so much for listening to Protecting Your Nest. Peak Human - Unbiased Nutrition Info for Optimum Health, Fitness & Living
Hello. We’re back. I’m Brian Sanders and I’m excited to share another great episode with you lovely people. Dr. Ken Berry is the author of the great book “Lies My Doctor Told Me,” he’s a speaker, he’s got an awesome and very popular YouTube channel, and he’s a great doctor who realized he was doing everything wrong and had the humbleness to admit this was so and reverse course. His own health was failing him and the advice he was giving his patients was failing them as well. I love these people who can man up to their mistakes, admit they didn’t have all the answers, and work tirelessly to make up for it. He’s got a bunch of great takeaways to offer so listen up to the good doctor! Now I’ve got a few updates - we just started an impromptu project - a mini-doc debunking the latest installment of vegan propaganda called the Game Changers. If you haven't heard of this, it’s a “documentary” on Netflix about a few athletes who eat only plants and think everyone in the world should do the same thing. They misrepresent science and purposely deceive a huge population of the world who is not well-versed on food and nutrition and might believe that because a few genetic freaks are doing midly well eating a few salads and James Cameron who has $140 million invested in pea protein which they make the fake impossible burgers out of say that this is how humans should eat that it is actually true. I could go on and on about this, but I won’t because this short film will say it all much better. We got a great team together on short notice including Shawn Baker, Paul Saladino, Mark Sisson, and Tim Shieff who used to be called the Vegan Prince and was actually in the Game Changers film. That’s until he realized the diet was destroying his life and he moved to embrace animal foods and basically immediately restored his health. We’re filming some comedy reenactments of some of the stupid so-called “experiments” they do in the film tomorrow with some of these guys. We’re going to be releasing this on YouTube for the whole world to see for free on November 27th the night before Thanksgiving. So many people were falling for this propaganda piece we had to make this and get it out quick - just in time to show your family members who may be refusing that turkey because they saw this unscientific joke. This is not going to delay the Food Lies film which is still my main focus. You can learn more about that if you haven't heard of it yet at http://FoodLies.org I have a different team working on that and it’s moving full steam ahead, so don’t worry! http://NoseToTail.org is also going strong. We deliver sustainably raised grass fed, grass finished meat to your door. It’s similar to other meat delivery services but we use the entire animal and it's from our family owned ranch in Texas. Get the bones, marrow, fat, organs, and everything else at http://NoseToTail.org I’m liking the beef bacon these days. It’s kinda like your best guy friend and best girl friend getting married. It’s a beautiful thing. That’s about it for now. So much going on daily here at SAPIEN it’s hard for me to not go on about it - you can learn more at http://SAPIEN.org So now I’ll let ya’ll hear from my man Dr. Ken Berry. Dr. Ken Berry wants us all to be aware that much of what our doctors say may be a lie. Maybe not an outright malicious lie, but much of what "we" believe in medicine can be traced back to word-of-mouth teachings without a scientific basis. In his book, "Lies My Doctor Told Me" he uncovers the most common of these misconceptions. He also shares his story how he learned the power of a ketogenic diet and how that has revolutionized his ability to help his patients. Dr. Berry has an open and honest approach and pulls no punches. That's one reason why he is always informative and entertaining!

Today, I am lucky to have here with me a profound and highly-driven keto advocate from the medical field, Dr. Ken Berry. Although his practice is not yet warmly accepted in our society today, he is firm on his stand when it comes to the ketogenic diet. Dr. Berry is the first physician in the family. It was always his childhood dream. At the age of 13, he started having severe migraines and thought he would not be fit for a medical doctor’s lifestyle. However, his condition got better during his college days and hoped that he could finally fulfill his dream. He was determined to change his way of eating when he was obese and became prediabetec at the age of 35. He knew his stressful lifestyle coupled with unhealthy eating habits contributed to his condition. Dr. Berry was further challenged to make a change in order to help his critically ill patients. His goal is to spread the truth about the ketogenic diet. Dr. Berry had already published a book entitled, “Lies My Doctor Told Me” and is increasing his reach with the help of social media channels. In this episode, Dr. Berry and I talked about ketogenic diet, type 2 diabetes, the 3 pillars of health and nutrition, exercise and more. He shared his journey with living his best life starting with the paleo diet then transitioning to low-carb diet and finally the ketogenic diet. He also shed some light as to why ketogenic diet doesn’t work for other people. Moreover, tips and strategies were shared on how to get the most out of the keto diet. Tune in! [07:56] The 3 Pillars of Health and Nutrition He want back to dig up his medical books and lecture notes to refresh his knowledge on his nutrition training. After reading up on the materials that he was able to retrieve, he was reminded that the foundation of health is knowledge and understanding of human nutrition. The 3 Pillars of Health and Nutrition: 1. Eat lots of whole grain 2. Don’t eat any saturated fat. 3. Jog. [09:32] The Unexpected Weight Gain He has an exceptional training background when it comes to parenteral nutrition. However, he admits that, when it comes to feeding a healthy human being in a disease-preventive way, he was clueless. Dr. Berry guided himself with the 3 pillars and applied it in his daily life. Despite his consistent hard work for 2 months, he still gained 5-10 pounds. [10:25] Thinking Outside The Medical Doctor Box Read different works on nutrition: Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution by Robert Atkins The Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson He tried this new knowledge on himself starting with paleo and transitioned to a low-carb diet which got him better but still far from his health goal. Immediately felt better, lost weight, decreased inflammation. He then finally tried ketogenic diet and after 2 months he thought to offer it to his morbidly obese patients, many of which are scheduled for a gastric bypass which is a risky procedure. His patients started noticing his transformation and were curious about what he was doing. He finally recommended the ketogenic diet to his patients with the worst case of morbid obesity and they all started getting better. [12:43] Dr. Berry’s Patients on Keto Diet He monitors his patients closely since the diet was presumed to be dangerous. After 1 month, his patients would come back asking if they could do it for a longer period of time. They loved the diet and was very happy with the results Many patients, who cancelled their bariatric surgery, were coming to him because they wanted to lose fat naturally. He was very glad he found a tool that could help many others when the only option most of them had before was a bariatric surgery. He only recommended it to his sickest patients [16:28] Type 2 Diabetes and the Ketogenic Diet Type 2 Diabetes is not a disease. It is one of the many ways how poison in your diet can manifest itself. Poisons: Sugar Grains Industrial seed oils Removing these poisons from the diet results to type 2 diabetes going away. [18:42] Truth about EBM: Evidence-Based Medicine or Eminence-Based Diet American Diabetes Association (ADA) claims their diet recommendation is based on zero research and it’s based on expert consensus. Dr. Berry, on the other hand, believes in true evidence based medicine (EBM) but oftentimes, no meaningful research is done on a topic which makes EBM mean something else, “Eminence Based Diet” Leading authorities in the medical field decide what is considered EBM as standard of care and there are many instances in history wherein these EBM, such as lobotomy and provision of Valium to premenopausal women, have been further proven to be dangerous and ineffective. [22:10] What Led Him to His Life Mission Dr. Berry knew he was called to reverse type 2 diabetes and obesity. His wife, Neisha, an active social media user, asked him, “How many patients do you help a day in the clinic?” and “How many patients can you help on social media?”. He had no social media presence back then other than Facebook. His wife’s question made him realize he had a big goal social media can give him a bigger platform. Dr. Berry started with creating a YouTube channel and other social media accounts [26:28] Elevated A1C VS. Elevated LDL “An elevated A1C is a shotgun pointed at your heart and an elevated LDL might be a BB gun pointed at your arm”. After reading more research on LDL, Dr. Berry says it is not a risk factor. Elevated cholesterol and elevated LDL does not increase your risk of heart attack or stroke. This elevation may be caused by an inflammation in your body and it is it’s attempt of filling in the damage done in your arteries. Your body naturally makes cholesterol. Even the brain has its own cholesterol manufacturing process. An elevated A1C, elevated triglyceride level, and a low HDL level are more important markers than an elevated LDL. Doctors who are concerned with elevated cholesterol are already 10 years behind on their readings while doctors who are alarmed by elevated LDL are 3-5 years behind. American Heart Association’s (AHA/ACC) cardiac risk calculator does not factor in the LDL level but uses triglyceride and HDL levels. [32:33] Recommendation for the Use of Statins Recommendation for the use of statins will lower LDL level but will not positively influence your 10-year cardiac risk. The medical community continues to promote the use of statins because their paradigm has not yet shifted. Some medical practitioners are gaining awareness when it comes to this issue Many doctors are still relying on recommendations given by the AHA. However, big companies and corporations heavily influence the information distributed by the association We are slowly killing ourselves by taking harmful medication [36:05] Social Media is the Key Dr. Berry intends to use of social media to help spread the word and tell people to stop poisoning themselves. People are dying everyday because of belief on a false paradigm. Social media helps him educate and tell people to stop comiting suicide and stop letting your doctors commit homicide. Being loud and obnoxious about the information will help prevent unnecessary deaths. [37:59] The Story of Dr. Simon Weiss The quote: “The way you judge someone’s stature in the medical community is the length of their white coat” and a story on Dr. Simon Weiss which illustrates Dr. Ken Berry’s advocacy Back then doctors were seen as gentlemen and it was a common assumption that gentlemen are never dirty. Mortality rate of women and children were high because of the childbirth fever caused by unsanitary practices of doctors. Dr. Weiss observed that in poorer areas where midwives facilitated child birth instead of doctors and women and children were not affected by childbirth fever because midwives do not handle dissections in the morgue. Dr. Weiss published his research but because of his short coat, he was not taken seriously by other doctors. The unsanitary practice went on for 70-80 years before another doctor discovered Dr. Weiss’ research and shed light unto it. It took another decade before more doctors caught on to the proper practice of handwashing. With this, Dr. Ken Berry stands firm with his belief on the ketogenic diet and is willing to take the risk that comes with it so that people can know the truth. [43:20] Overcoming the Powdered Butt Syndrome Powdered Butt Syndrome is when people, for example your senior, don’t take you seriously no matter what you say or evidence you show. A third party source may be helpful with conveying the information to your family and friends which is what many people do. As with Dr. Berry, his videos takes a big part in encouraging people to listen and understand the truth about the ketogenic diet. [45:42] Why Ketogenic is Not Working for Other People? After enthusiastically getting in to keto, some people slack off and allow gradually themselves more and more carb loaded food items. This reduces fat loss and increases inflammation. People should have a friend, coach, that can re-check their diet Document what you’re eating and consult someone with knowledgeable on keto to figure out what you’re doing or eating wrong. Don’t easily trust and simply rely on what big food names claim when it comes to being healthy because there are loopholes they go through to make their products seem healthy enough. Big food corporations only care about making a profit and will do all things just to cut down on cost. [49:22] Dining in Restaurants Don’t be afraid to let restaurants know of the ingredients and food items that you’re avoiding in a keto diet. Tip: Have a laminated small laminated information card stating that “I’m allergic to sugar in all forms, all grains, and the following oils. Please do not include it in my meals”. As more people do this, big chain restaurants can go bankrupt or they can evolve to meet people’s need for real and safe human food. Be willing to go the extra penny for quality food. Accepting bad food because it’s cheap is as good as voting for it. [51:53] PEO (Parent Essential Oils) Solution by Dr. Brian Peskin PEO Solution: Conquering Cancer, Diabetes and Heart Disease with Parent Essential Oils is the collaborative effort of Dr. Brian S. Peskin and Dr. Robert Jay Rowen. Their combined insights will give you state-of-the-art science with new tools to easily become and remain lean-for-life, energized, and disease-free. [52:19] Fat in a Cellular Level Every cell has a membrane and this membrane uses fat as integral part. Eating high fat food gives your body sufficient building blocks for building healthy cell membranes. [52:50] Restaurants and Their Oil Use Study shows a plate of french fries cooked in canola oil resulted to 132 days of membrane inflammation. Restaurants use cooking oils, such as canola and soybean oil, that easily oxidize and they don’t always change their cooking oils to cut down cost. These oils become deadlier as they get reused and get absorbed by the food you eat. [53:44] Consuming Healthy Oils As people develop healthier cell membranes, they can stay longer in the sun because they are now more able to form melanin. This prevents them from easily getting sun burnt and help them develop a tan instead. Even cells of other organs have cell membranes and they also need fat to form and function well. Food habit of consuming industrial seed and vegetable oil will contribute to the activation of bad genes. [55:16] Shopping for the Right Food Products Always read labels and check the ingredients of what you’re buying. If you’re not familiar with a word, search online what it is. “Generally Regarded As Safe” only means it won’t kill you quickly. [56:42] Exercise and Weight Loss “Exercise is a terrible approach to weight loss. If you’re goal is to lose weight, joining the gym is a waste of time and money.” Meaningful research show that exercising and moving more is a terrible strategy to lose fat. If you want to lose excess fat, change your diet. [58:00] Experts (PhDs, Scientists, Dietitians, Nutritionists, and Doctors) on Keto as a Fad Diet Most of today’s experts have the same thinking with doctors back in Dr. Weiss’ time who did not believe that handwashing was essential. They have a hard time accepting the truth or admitting that they are wrong. One of the many reasons may be losing part of their (online) following. Some may be afraid of losing they research support and funding. It is ignorance to think it’s possible to calculate one’s specific caloric needs through weight, height, and gender. Big corporations pay experts like them to convince the consumer that it’s alright to consume bad food items because they packed in small containers. Beware of people who promote “Eat more, move less”. [01:02:55] Patients Who Found Success in Keto The healthiest patients with the least chronic diseases are the ones who consume food products with the least amount of prohibited ingredients on the label. Eldest patient who passed away at 102 was in very good health, with an alert mind and a strong body. Majority of diet was made of vegetables and meat. Babies or kids who are fed by their parents with real whole foods did not develop eczema, allergies, and even acne. They consume one-ingredient food. [01:05:33] What Dr. Berry Is Most Excited About We’re close to the tipping point of having the low-carb keto carnivore diet as a norm now more than how where we were back in the 70s or 80s. Nurse Jackie Eberstein, who worked closely with Dr. Robert Atkins, is continuing to raise awareness about the Low-Carb Ketogenic Diet. Know more here. Following a diet based on the current food pyramid created and promoted by the federal government is lethal. Since the guidelines were put into place obesity, diabetes, and chronic illness has been on the rise in America. Elle Russ chats with Ken Berry, MD, about his new book Lies My Doctor Told Me. Have your doctors lied to you? Chances are they have, and most likely unknowingly. Medical research is expanding so quickly that only the most dedicated doctors can keep up with it all. Is your doctor that dedicated? Whether it's recommending a low-fat diet, or warning you to avoid the sun, these medical lies can cause really harm to your health.
