Jay Henderson: My pleasure. Thank you. Lindsey: Well, tell us a little bit about yourself and about your hiring agency. Jay Henderson: So, I'm in Raleigh, North Carolina. As I have just learned, you're right up the street from me, which is awesome. And I've been helping law firms for about 15 years make excellent hiring decisions. You know, get the best people in the door that they can. Avoid the problems. That's really where you start. If you can avoid the problems, you're going to default straight into a better team immediately. Right? So, yeah, working with law firms for about 15 years. And speaking of Pilma. But I got into working with law firms because of Ken Hardison. So that has been a great, great connection and relationship. I consider Ken a good friend. In fact, he's from Raleigh. So I met him in Raleigh. So that's that, you know, outside of business. So that's how that worked. But yeah, so it's a lot of fun. I love working with my law firm clients. I pretty much only focus on working with law firms. And that's it. Lindsey: That's great. Yeah, we just had Ken on the show a couple of weeks ago. And what a great guy. He's got some great vision and a huge heart for helping out attorneys, clearly, as you do as well. And so what is it about the legal profession that drew you in and made you want to focus on that for hiring purposes? Jay Henderson: Well, it was a pretty selfish decision, actually. I, well, 2008, 2008. In 2009, I was doing a lot of management consulting work with Cisco Corporation. They happen to have a big campus, as you know, right up the street from us. And so then the economy sort of went sideways, as we all know, a little bit. And I stepped back and I asked, where am I unique and different, where I can add value in the world and be super helpful? And in fact, Ken and I were sitting right here in this office, and we were talking about the different industries that are struggling and what people are going to do to, you know, pivot, which was a big COVID word.

Jay Henderson is a graduate of the Western Hockey League, having played with the Red Deer Rebels and the Edmonton Ice. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the 9th round of the 1997 National Hockey League Draft. He went on to a 12-year professional career, including 33 games with the Boston Bruins. Henderson won 3 Calder Cups in the American Hockey League, one in Providence, one in Houston and one with Milwaukee. He also went to Europe near the end of the his hockey career, playing in Germany, Austria and England. After he was done playing, Henderson wanted to stay in the game. He was an assistant coach with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) for two years and also an assistant coach with the Kootenay Ice of the WHL. You cannot change employees; in fact, they can become worse over time as they get more comfortable. Why your brain won't let you be someone you are not, but you can change your self-image. It's like dipping a blanket in a dye; you may need to do it several times until every fibre has taken on the new colour. And some reapplication may be required. Why comfort zones are comfortable "Think of your mindset like a rubber band stretched upwards and downwards between your hands. It can snap back down to your reality, where you are now because that's where you're comfortable, or your current reality can snap up to your vision. The one that wins is the one that's most dominant in our minds and emotions". The power of visualisation, in sport and life. Visualisation is like dipping the blanket. The role dissatisfaction plays in snapping you up towards your vision. Why hiring the wrong person can damage your whole team. When it comes to employing someone, you should do it the same way you would market your business looking for the ideal patient. Why you need to have a careers page on your website, you should always be in recruitment mode. Final Tip It's really important that you value yourself. Give yourself the gift of taking care of the important things in your business, and do not hire sub-par team members. "How we think about ourselves is reflected in how we run our business." And on a final note, stop telling yourself the story that there's no one available or there are no good people to employ. This is a negative mindset. Jay Henderson owns a business called Real Talent Hiring and is the author of the highly successful book The Ultimate Small Business Guide To Hiring Super-Stars, and today we discuss how to identify super-stars for your business and also how to avoid duds. If you want to scale your business, grow your business and reach your goals fast, and maybe retire quicker, you need to hire the right people. The poorer hiring decision you make the longer you'll have to wait for your goals. One of the fastest ways to ruin your business is to hire the wrong person, but hiring the right person and putting them in the wrong position can be just as detrimental to your business. Objective Reliability Objectively measuring how people think and make decisions, is far better than subjectively measuring how people will behave in certain situations. People can always fake their behaviour, but they cannot fake how they think and make decisions. The best thing you can do for your team is making a great hiring decision, and the worse thing you can do for your team is making a poor hiring decision. Risk Level Employing people for your business is all about managing risk. When you're employing someone it's about the three P's: 1. PROTECTING the business 2. Accessing the employees true POTENTIAL 3. Thier long-term PERFORMANCE Be In Hiring Mode Always be in hiring mode, even if you're not looking for someone right now. Nothing worse than hiring when you're desperate. You should create a page on your website that is designed specifically to sell your business to prospective future team members and you should market this page exists. Be honest and let them know you're not hiring right now, but they can still send in their details. It's important to keep these on file for future use. Have Clarity Clarity is the foundation. You need to know exactly who you want to employ before you write and design your ad for the position. When you do this the ad becomes far more powerful and it will pull the right person in the door. You may get fewer responses and application, but they will be more suited to the position and will save you a lot of time. Jay has a template you can download which will assist with this: Super-Star Hiring Profile Template Think of your employee avatar the same way you would identify your client or customer avatar. Catch Them Off Guard When you've selected your applicants, try and catch them off guard by doing a quick phone interview, but do it at an unscheduled time, when they least expect it. You may tell them you will call at 3.00pm, but instead, call them at 1.30pm People are preparing for interviews so surprise them and try to throw them off the game. Monday Morning Tip Get crystal clear on the three most important impact things you can do that will make a difference in your business and make sure your team is on the same page and they are also crystal clear on your strategy and what you need them to do. When it comes to hiring a new employee if your gut is telling you YES...do not listen to it. Just make sure you follow the right processes you would normally follow, however, if you're gut is telling you not to hire them, always follow your gut. Most people don’t know who they should or should not hire—they just go with the applicant who has education and experience, or they’ll go with their gut feeling. More than anything, most hiring decisions are based on enthusiasm. This can be a toxic pattern! Are you hiring people because you have a really good feeling about them, or are you hiring people that will work well in their position AND with the rest of your team? It can be really difficult to know if you’re making smart hiring decisions. For most employers, they only really know if they’ve made the right decision once the new employee prospers or fails! Jay Henderson has a 7 step system that will help create a team with the skill sets that balance each other out. When hiring a new employee, your job is to collect as much data as possible and remove all emotion. Jay can help you figure out the best way to collect that data and how to interpret what you see.
