Tipp Today: Phil Prendergast on International Nurses Day by Tipp FM Radio
Phil received the highest civilian medal for bravery in Canada. This Niagara Regional Police officer nearly lost his life trying to rescue a woman trapped in a murder-suicide with her son. He entered the house to find a man and his mother doused in gasoline… There was a pivotal point in Phils challenge with PTSD where he felt he was in danger and was looking for his gun for protection… it was very much irrational thinking and this lead him to get the help he needed. Phil shares how he has tapered off so many medications and discovered how medicinal marijuana has made a big difference for him. Needless to say, Phil has ventured through a lot. Today he is still living with, learning about and helping others with PTSD, while working towards a PhD in Psychology. His approach is that he refuses to lose against PTSD. Which is also the name of his organization, Refuse to Lose. Refuse to Lose raises money for first responders to access care needed to treat PTSD. Why? Because right now the cost for the standard care is too expensive for most people Especially when it is not covered by insurance. Today Phil is helping others refuse to lose against PTSD. Today Phil walks us through Romans 7:14-25 and explores how we are enslaved to sin and it is that which makes us do the things we don't want to, but the power of the cross breaks that slavery so we are free to live as righteous. Plus: Those who ask how Christians could vote for Donald Trump might want to ask how Christians could vote for any of his radical opponents. We'll discuss that and more on Wednesday's JANET MEFFERD TODAY.

How do conventional wells look in Kansas right now, what issues are they lobbying for across the state and what’s on the horizon? Today Phil is chatting with Ed Cross, President of the Kansas Independent Oil & Gas Association (KIOGA) about how he got into the oil and gas industry and how he ended up working for KIOGA. You’ll hear about the state and federal issues that they’re fighting for and what has been going on in Kansas in the oil and gas industry. Ed shares what he’s most excited about and the importance of educating others on the importance of oil and gas. Here are some of the things you can look forward to in this episode: How Ed got into the oil and gas industry An overview of what Ed does at KIOGA The statewide and federal issues that they’re lobbying for What Ed is most excited about for the future of oil and gas Highlights: 2:48 How Ed got into the oil and gas industry 3:21 What Ed does as the President of the association 3:59 What is happening in KIOGA and the oil and gas industry currently 4:58 What they’re fighting for at the state level 5:40 The issues they deal with on the federal level 7:20 The outlook of conventional wells moving forward in Kansas 9:13 Production in Kansas dropping due to financial issues in 2014 10:05 Adjusting technology to be used in Kansas 10:30 What KIOGA will be advocating for in the upcoming months 12:30 What Ed is most excited about for the future of the oil and gas industry About KIOGA: Founded in 1937, the Kansas Independent Oil & Gas Association (KIOGA) is a nonprofit member organization representing independent oil and natural gas producers in Kansas, as well as allied service and supply companies. The purpose of KIOGA as stated in the original articles of incorporation, is “. . . to improve the market for oil and gas produced in Kansas and to promote the welfare of the oil and gas industry in the State of Kansas.” Independent oil and natural gas producers are nonintegrated companies which receive nearly all their revenue from production at the wellhead. Independents are in the oil and natural gas exploration and production business and are not major integrated companies who also refine and market petroleum end-products. Independents account for 93% of the oil and 63% of the natural gas produced in Kansas. Nationally, independents drill 90% of domestic oil and natural gas wells and produce over 80% of America’s oil and natural gas. With over 4,200 members, KIOGA is the lead state and national advocate for Kansas independent oil and natural gas producers. We are committed to ensuring that tomorrow’s energy policy will be one in which our members grow and prosper. Our active presence before the Kansas Legislature, U.S. Congress, state and federal regulatory agencies, and other governmental decision-makers means the concerns of Kansas independent oil and natural gas producers are heard in Topeka and Washington. Today Phil, Matt and Nate talk about Thunder Road by director Jim Cummings. A tale of a man who is (to put it very lightly) down on his luck. The boys talk about how Cummings was able to craft a character and a world that is 100% believable, and how these elements make for an engaging film.
I'm joined in this episode by award-winning hairdresser and businessman, Phil Smith – the proud owner of Be Gorgeous product haircare range and Smith Salon England. Today Phil is going to share with you the realities of what it's like to being the owner of 28 Toni & Guy global salons and a hairdresser at the top of their game – warts and all! An open and honest guy, I really enjoyed Phil's candid conversation of his story in hairdressing. As someone who consistently pushing forward Phil has both done and experienced it all in the hair industry. A multi-salon owner, award winner, celebrity hairdresser, international showman and lately, industry business activist, his experiences will be a great motivator (and leveller) for you all. Consolidating his 28 global Toni & Guys units into one flagship Smith England salon, Phil made the bold decision that less is more. This move has allowed Phil to focus his energy on campaigning for better business rates, building his brand, tending to his loyal clientele and supporting his 21 year daughter Ellie who last year joined the family business. Working in hairdressing offers you so many wonderful opportunities to grow within it, something that Phil never shy's away from. If you harbour ambitions to one day be a multi-salon group owner, having your own brand hair care product line, or to be an award-winning hairdresser, then this episode is an honest interview to just some of the things you may experience on your journey to achieving this. Today I have a guest who's a adopted a unique mobile salon business, that offers both working lifestyle choice and freedom. Curious? Then listen in to my interview with Phil Benton, owner of Douce, a 1962 Airstream Globetrotter trailer travelling it's way around Cambridge and London. I'm a big fan of what Phil has created. This quirky silver mobile cabin houses two chairs and is open from dawn to dusk. Regularly pitching up at festivals, craft fairs, pub car parks and buisness parks, Douce offers contemporary hair cutting and styling services for it's punters. How damn cool is that! Phil talks openly in this episode on why he adopted this way for owning his own salon, the difficulties that he faced in finding and fitting out his Airstream Globetrotter, and why he's just loving the way that he's now working! Today Phil is going to be sharing how being mobile has enabled him to be free and create a flexible brand able to collaborate and work anywhere in the world. It's that inspiring that you might even want to come back for a second or third listen so that you don't miss a single thing. Sit back, relax, and enjoy! Thanks for Listening! Phil Smart started his professional career in 1976 by completing a Carpentry Apprenticeship and then held a General Builders License in both Queensland and New South Wales. After starting off as a builder Phil's foray into the recruitment industry began in 1994 as the financial backer and strategic adviser to a recruitment organisation, which is still in existence today. In late 1996 Phil sold his shareholding in that company, however, he had developed an affinity for the industry and decided to establish WorkPac in February of 1997. Today Phil remains a driving force behind WorkPac’s success but in his wisdom sees the value in allowing others to drive the company’s direction and values which continue to be hallmarks of who WorkPac is as an organisation. In this episode we delve into: Scaling by leveraging other people’s time and not just your own; Cultural fit and recognising when someone isn’t the right fit; Investing heavily in your people: it’s just good business; Taking a step back from the business; and A touch of philosophy and red wine! Phil is generous with his time and his conversation. I’m sure you will enjoy it.
Dr. Phil Maffetone is one of the best running experts in the industry for his work on the MAF method of training and his research on nutrition, particularly how to burn fat for fuel. Today Phil and I started talking about nutrition, how he discovered that there was something fundamentally wrong with the food sold today, and how deceptive the food industry can be. We discuss how the Government subsidizes junk food, leaving fruits and vegetables more expensive, which makes eating well on a budget impossible to accomplish. The chronic diseases most people die of linked to being overfat, and the reasons why weighing yourself is NOT an accurate indicator of how well your body is doing. Not only are you starting your day depressed from the number you have seen, but you are essentially measuring water weight. Phil gives us a better solution, and ways to eat better for your long-term health as well as your running. We discuss why runners might struggle to run fast speed workouts with a low carb diet initially (I definitely experienced this!), and the power of those slow twitch muscles to develop our aerobic system. Fueling them correctly will only help us feel better, and of course run faster. In the second half of the interview, we discuss the MAF method of running "slow" for 3-6 months, and how you although it seems counterproductive, you will end up running easy at a pace you previously considered hard, by giving your body the time to adapt and learn to burn fat for fuel instead of working off carbs. Finally, Phil discusses his latest research on the Boston marathon, and his vow to try to change the ruling on Boston being a record ineligible course, as his research proves it is by far the slowest...and actually, two other courses have a distinct advantage. This episode is for you if you love to learn about the science behind what is going on in the running world. Phil is one of the names every runner needs to know, and this is why. Today's Guest Phil Maffetone Dr. Philip Maffetone has been a private practitioner, health and athlete coach and consultant, published independent researcher, respected pioneer in the field of complementary sports medicine, and internationally recognized educator and author in the fields of nutrition, biofeedback, exercise physiology, and athletic training over the course of his forty- year career. What You Will Learn About Are we turning a corner with our health or are we getting worse? What overfat is and how it is affecting our running more than we realize How to lose that excess fat without going on a diet Why getting rid of refined carbohydrates through sugar and junk food will make you feel significantly better in your running The benefits of building your aerobic system for your health, not just your running What fatiguing early in the race shows about your system and what you need to do How you can run faster even if you are running slow every day Inspirational Quotes The big companies, the sugar industry, the junk food companies know what we think, they know what people think, so they are changing things. We have a whole new world of junk food called natural. If you go into health food stores, you will see junk foods, and it is very well disguised, and if you are not careful, you will be sucked in by the packaging, by the names, the inferences. 90% of US adults are overfat, that is mind boggling…exercise isn't going to solve the problem. More people in the US are exercising than ever before, sugar being added to foods is the problem. Junk food is not cheap, it just appears to be cheap because the price you pay for one meal or one dinner for the family. People who consume junk food get hungrier sooner, so they eat more calories. That's what junk food does, that is what sugar does. Diets don't work long-term. We need to take responsibility for our own health, and not rely on anybody. What sugar does when we consume it; about 40% of that sugar gets converted to fat and gets stored. The more sugar we consume, the more we convert. When we consume that sugar, we take a lot of the fat that is stored on our arms and legs, and send it to the belly. Sugar reduces our ability to burn fat. It takes a while for exercise alone to have an effect on body fat, but with sugar, it really takes 2 meals of no sugar or low sugar to affect your metabolism measurably. Within the course of 2 weeks, I have seen people lose 2 inches on their waist. It's now considered normal for runners to have frequent infections. Submax performance is a very good way to measure max performance…and it is something you can do in the course or training without having to rest for it or recover after it. Runners do more than run. They have a social life, a work life, a family life, and all these factors have a certain amount of stress, and that stress impacts our ability to progress. The most common reason people don't progress is because of their diet, because of the sugar. That's the benefit of the aerobic system, you can run faster at the same heart rate, and if you can run faster in training, you can run faster at the same race heart rate as well. It's a scientific way to get more healthy and fit Stress affects us regardless of where the stress is, whether it's the physical stress of bad shoes or the biochemical stress of eating junk food or the mental stress of having a bad day at the option, weather can be a stress too. Hazy hot and humid weather is a huge stress. Under stress our resting, training, and racing heart rates are higher.
