Two women from different worlds in Renaissance France cross paths in a way that changes both their lives. One is Marguerite de Navarre, a King's sister. Powerful, privileged and widely admired, Marguerite must nonetheless marry where she is told to, regardless of her feelings, and – despite the thrilling new ideas of religious reform causing upheaval in France – must toe the line for the good of her brother's kingdom. Ever a risk-taker, she does what she can to protect her reformist friends. The other is a cast out, itinerant child who longs to be a printer like her late father. Jehane goes dressed as a male by the name of Josse, at first for safety's sake and then by choice, fending off the risks of being alone, unprotected and born female, poor but trying to live in freedom. These two women, the rich and poor come together in the most unexpected of ways.In this episode Gregory Dobbs chats to Tracy Ryan about the challenges facing women in Renaissance France, how inventing a fictional character to complement the real Queen of the Navarre opened up storytelling possibilities, and how poetry, journal entries and Queen Marguerite's own writing have enriched the social and political fabric of this story.

Tracy Ryan’s daughter Sophie, was diagnosed with a brain tumor at 8 1/2 months old. Knowing that a long course of chemotherapy was likely on the horizon, she immediately began looking for options to boost Sophies immune system. Through a chain of events, she was introduced to the benefits of medical cannabis. Sophie took her first dose of medical cannabis on film at 9 months old, and everything changed. The film, Weed the People, follows 5 families who use medical cannabis for their children with cancer and is now available on Netflix. Wayne Justmann is a master shit talker. He also started the first medical marijuana ID program. Wayne was diagnosed with HIV in 1988. A few years later he met Dennis Peron, who founded the first cannabis dispensary in response to the AIDS epidemic. Wayne worked closely with Dennis on the initiative that made California the first state to legalize medical marijuana in 1996. Back then, giving away free weed was just part of the business. They called it Compassionate Care. People were sick and some of them couldn’t even afford a nickel bag. That was still true when Prop 64 made recreational use legal in California. But regulation and taxation made it next to impossible to give away free weed, and the programs that once existed to provide the stuff to the terminally ill started to drop like flies. Tracy Ryan, the founder and CEO of @MyCannakids, a cannabis tincture brand focused on serving children like her daughter Sophie, was no longer able to support families with children battling cancer, epilepsy, and other conditions. For two years, Tracy, Wayne, and other activists and organizers railed against the state’s treatment of medical marijuana patients. In October, nearly three years after California voted to legalize, Governor Gavin Newsom gave new life to Compassionate Care when he signed Senate Bill 34. The donation of medical marijuana to the terminally ill is now legal and tax exempt. But is the spirit of compassion still alive?

Josh Crossney definitely commands a presence when in the room. He has passionately established the most attended science conference of its type in a state that you would not expect. Portland, Oregon is where Josh decided to lay down his roots for the Cannabis Science Conference drawing attendees from over 30 countries and showcasing 112 vendors in 2018. While this would be enough for most people, Josh decided that his home town of Baltimore was ready to bring the show to the east coast solidifying his construction of a dual coast global branded event. Through his event he has managed to bridge the gap between celebrities to secure endorsements from Montel Williams, Ricki Lake, Fran Drescher and Olivia Newton John (2019 Keynote speaker alongside Amazon John Easterling). With every celebrity endorsement they share their own personal struggle that cannabis has helped in some fashion. He took an early interest in and sits on the board of Cannakids the cannabis company producing medicine for kids by Tracy Ryan who also founded Saving Sophie Foundation when her daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor. “When I was 18 and roused up and passionate I probably wanted to pull the pillars of the world down. I certainly have learned over a lifetime that the most effective way of bringing change is to show that there are other ways of doing things better and more humanely.” Trawling the internet doesn't reveal as much as you'd expect about poet John Kinsella. As a Neo Luddite - a term he coined – he's probably quite happy about that. Not finding much on the internet doesn't mean there's not much to be said – quite the contrary, but the bulk of the speaking is done prolifically through his writing (more than 30 volumes so far) and in the blog he shares with his wife of 22 years, Tracy Ryan, called Mutually Said: Poets Vegan Anarchist Pacifist. A conversation with John Kinsella, will naturally turn to the ethics of a range of big picture issues: identity, indigenous rights, farming, capitalism, our food and transportation. But also, in this conversation , which is divided into two parts, Kinsella speaks about his earlier life, grappling with drug and alcohol addiction, the turning point and the quest for secular virtue he pursues daily. Sincere thanks to John Kinsella for agreeing to this interview. “When I was 18 and roused up and passionate I probably wanted to pull the pillars of the world down. I certainly have learned over a lifetime that the most effective way of bringing change is to show that there are other ways of doing things better and more humanely.” Trawling the internet doesn’t reveal as much as you’d expect about poet John Kinsella. As a Neo Luddite - a term he coined to protest the fetishisation of technology– he’s probably quite happy about that. Not finding much on the internet doesn’t mean there’s not much to be said – quite the contrary, but the bulk of the speaking is done prolifically through his poetry (more than 30 volumes so far) and in the blog he shares with his wife of 22 years, Tracy Ryan, called Mutually Said: Poets Vegan Anarchist Pacifist.
At age 29, Tracy Ryan weighed 350 pounds, and was comfortable in her role as the "funny fat girl."
