This episode is primarily meant as a primer for music students. It gives a very broad overview of music history from the Medieval era through what we might call modern classical music. This episode is limited to Western civilization and some of the common composers. This episode also offers David Lane's suggestion that we should rethink how we've classified musical eras since 1900. Let us know what you think. Music excerpts occur in this order: O virga ac diadema (Hildegard von Bengen), The Shoemaker's Wife (John Dowland), Canzon 12 (Giovanni Gabrieli), Spem in Alium (Thomas Tallis), Erbarme Dich, mein Gott from “St Matthew's Passion” (Johann Sebastian Bach), String Quartet op. 76, no. 2 mvt III (Franz Joseph Haydn), finale of Act 4 of Swan Lake (Peter Tchaikovsky), Symphony No. 2 (Gustav Mahler), “Nuages” from Nocturnes (Claude Debussy), and Part 2 of Daphnis et Chloe (Maurice Ravel) Let me know your thoughts on this episode at https://www.speakpipe.com/MusicianToolkit or you can send me a written message at https://www.davidlanemusic.com/contact You can find this episode and links to this show on all podcast apps from https://musiciantoolkit.podbean.com/. SynopsisOn today's date in 1573, Queen Elizabeth the First celebrated her 40th birthday.According to SOME musicologists, the music-loving monarch received as a birthday gift a Latin motet for 40 voices by Thomas Tallis titled Spem in alium, which translates as “Hope in All Things.” Elisabeth was certainly fond of Tallis, awarding him special gifts and privileges —despite his remaining a steadfast Roman Catholic throughout her reign, when being a Catholic in Protestant England was very risky business, indeed! In fact, other musicologists contend that this famous motet was ACTUALLY written for the coronation of Elizabeth's predecessor, the CATHOLIC queen Mary Tudor. Still others say: “No, no—the motet was commissioned by a patriotic British nobleman, who challenged Tallis to write a work as good as—or better—than a contemporary Italian composer's 40-voice motet.”The truth is we just don't know for sure why Tallis composed this intricate and glorious music. We do know that in a dangerous time for ANYONE with strong religious convictions, Tallis lived to the ripe old age of 80. His epitaph reads: “As he did live, so he did die—in mild and quiet sort (O happy Man!)”Music Played in Today's ProgramThomas Tallis (c.1505 - 1585) Spem in alium Huelgas Ensemble; Paul Van Nevel, cond. Tom Service surrounds himself in Tallis's Spem in alium, a colossal Renaissance masterpiece for 40 individual voice parts, arranged in eight groups of five voices, each situated all around the listeners. This was the original surround sound experience - one that came about not in 20th-century cinemas but in 16th-century churches. Produced by Dom Wells
Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.02.09.527925v1?rss=1 Authors: Sinha, O., Madarshahian, S., Gomez-Granados, A. M., Paine, M. L., Kurtzer, I., Singh, T. Abstract: When stopping a closing door or catching an object, humans process the motion of inertial objects and apply reactive limb force over short period to interact with them. One way in which the visual system processes motion is through extraretinal signals associated with smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM). We conducted three experiments to investigate how SPEM contributes to anticipatory and reactive hand force modulation when interacting with a virtual object moving in the horizontal plane. Participants held a robotic manipulandum and attempted to stop an approaching simulated object by applying a force impulse (area under force-time curve) that matched the objects virtual momentum upon contact. We manipulated the objects momentum by varying either its virtual mass or its speed under free gaze or fixed gaze conditions. We examined gaze variables, timing of hand motor responses, anticipatory force control, and overall task performance. Our results show that extraretinal signals associated with SPEM are important for anticipatory modulation of hand force prior to contact. However, SPEM did not seem to affect the timing of the motor response or the task performance. Together, these results suggest that SPEM are important for anticipatory control of hand force prior to contact and may also play a critical role in anticipatory stabilization of limb posture when humans interact with moving objects. How do you say something new when everything's been said. On this months edition of the Andrew Special, we dive into "waves of saturation" and how humans tend to create something new when it seems as though there's nothing left to say. https://andrewmaxfield.orgwww.soundofageschoir.comAudio Credit: 30 second clip of Spem in Alium by Thomas Tallis (Performed by The Tallis Scholars)

Lutenist John Edwards plays Dump Philli from the Marsh Lutebook. Pieces called 'Dump' are often memorial pieces and are often built on ground basses of as few as two notes, as is this one. In a much earlier, and much shorter version this piece is titled 'Arthur's Dump' and it has been suggested that this is a memorial piece for court lutenist Arthur Dewes by his colleague Philip van Wilder. All music by Thomas Tallis used with permission of the artists and labels listed below. Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/i-oMO9qqzKA As a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) composed sacred music for four successive English monarchs, starting with Henry VIII and ending with Elizabeth. Those were turbulent times in England, especially for a church musician. Those were turbulent times in England, especially for a church musician. Like his colleague (and probable pupil) William Byrd, Tallis was able to adapt his compositional style to meet the constantly shifting ideological demands of the regimes under which he served. Unlike the combative Byrd, who in his later years removed himself from court life and made a point of his loyalty to Rome, Tallis may have simply gone with the flow. We don't know for sure, because there is very little information about his life. Here to tell us what we do know is singer and scholar Kerry McCarthy, author of a concise new book on Tallis's life and music in Oxford University Press's Master Musicians Series (which also includes her book on Byrd previously discussed on this podcast). She enthusiastically discusses his music, his times, the foundation of polyphony in plainchant which was obliterated by the Reformation, the various compositional techniques of the time, and the nature of the medieval modes with which these composers worked. How are you coping? In this episode, Kellan talks about the second of 3 parts on Covid Captivity – in this episode he’s talking to you. How are you coping? How are you growing? There are many conspiracy theories around the pandemic, and that often results in a lot of shouting – in protest against the restrictions, masks, etc. Kellan explains that the reactions to the pandemic are due to people’s contexts – B.D.E.E.P.The question is: after all the shouting, what did you do?Kellan reminds us that we are interdependent – we need each other and we should not be ashamed of needing help from those around us, and in turn, that allows us to grow. Kellan tells us about growing the four categories of S.P.E.M. If you do so, you will thank this pandemic, and you will grow toward Your Ultimate Life.Key Takeaways:“You have a context, and that context is your collection of beliefs, definitions, experiences, expectations, and perceptions.”“We have this idea that because we’re not caught, we can get away with it.”“After your shouting, what did you do?”“If we’re resentful and angry as we ask for help, then we can’t accept it graciously, we’re upset that we have to do it, we’re ashamed, and we feel bad about the fact that we needed help.”“We’re interdependent – I need you, you need me; we need each other.”“How are you coping?”“If you’re not happy with the way you’re coping, then there’s an opportunity for growth.”Connect with Kellan on social media at:Facebook: www.facebook.com/kellan.fluckiger3YouTube: www.youtube.com/c/ultimatelifeformulaLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kellanfluckigerTwitter: https://twitter.com/kellanfluckigerInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/coachkellanfluckiger/You can find out more about Kellan and how he can help you achieve your ultimate life by checking out his website: https://www.kellanfluckiger.com/Subscribe to the podcast at:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/your-ultimate-life-with-kellan-fluckiger/id1505919748Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6IXjYZo38go7Pv5ElanVv4Simplecast: https://your-ultimate-life-by-kellan-fluckiger.simplecast.com/Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5zaW1wbGVjYXN0LmNvbS84YVZ1VlVkQw==Stitcher: *https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/your-ultimate-life-with-kellan-fluckiger?refid=stpriHeart: *https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-your-ultimate-life-with-ke-61503928/Deezer: *https://www.deezer.com/us/show/1028862RadioPublic: https://radiopublic.com/your-ultimate-life-with-kellan-fl-G3AMY2If you haven't already, please rate and review the podcast on ApplePodcasts. Still others say: “No, no—the motet was commissioned by a patriotic British nobleman, who challenged Tallis to write a work as good as—or better—than a contemporary Italian composer’s 40-voice motet.” The truth is we just don’t know for sure why Tallis composed this intricate and glorious music. We do know that in a dangerous time for ANYONE with strong religious convictions, Tallis lived to the ripe old age of 80. His epitaph reads: “As he did live, so he did die—in mild and quiet sort (O happy Man!)”
Thomas Tallis' motet 'Spem in alium' for 40 separate parts is a piece every singer of early choral music knows and has stories about. Harry, Robert and Eamonn have recorded it as singers and conductors and give us their take on this infamous monster of Tudor polyphony.Support the making of Choral Chihuahua at supporter.acast.com/choral-chihuahuaSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/choral-chihuahua. William Shakespeare, Sonnet IX Is it for fear to wet a widow's eye, That thou consum'st thy self in single life? Ah! if thou issueless shalt hap to die, The world will wail thee like a makeless wife; The world will be thy widow and still weep That thou no form of thee hast left behind, When every private widow well may keep By children's eyes, her husband's shape in mind: Look what an unthrift in the world doth spend Shifts but his place, for still the world enjoys it; But beauty's waste hath in the world an end, And kept unused the user so destroys it. No love toward others in that bosom sits That on himself such murd'rous shame commits. Music: Ralph Vaughan Williams, “Fantasia on Greensleeves“, from Sir John in Love, opera adapted from William Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, 1928 Benjamin Britten, Corpus Christi Carol - performed by boy soprano Sebastian Carrington Thomas Tallis, Spem in Alium (1750)

Sweets with sweets war not, joy delights in joy: Why lov'st thou that which thou receiv'st not gladly, Or else receiv'st with pleasure thine annoy? If the true concord of well-tuned sounds, By unions married, do offend thine ear, They do but sweetly chide thee, who confounds In singleness the parts that thou shouldst bear. Mark how one string, sweet husband to another, Strikes each in each by mutual ordering; Resembling sire and child and happy mother, Who, all in one, one pleasing note do sing: Whose speechless song being many, seeming one, Sings this to thee: 'Thou single wilt prove none.' Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a central nervous system disorder that an estimated 2.3 million people around the globe live with. To help us understand this often unpredictable condition and life with it, we interview Alexandre Guedes da Silva, the director and vice-president of Multiple Sclerosis Society of Portugal (SPEM). SPEM is a member organization of the broader European Multiple Sclerosis Platform (EMSP), an association founded in 1989 in order to make sure the patients with multiple sclerosis diagnosis have a voice in determining health policies and research goals on the European level. Currently, the platform relies on “a growing network of 40 member societies in 35 European countries”. Engineer by profession, Silva is not only an advocate trying to raise awareness about the disorder, but also a patient himself, living with remitting-relapsing MS for decades. Answering Kim’s and Alessia’s questions, he shares his personal experience with MS symptoms and thoughts on what society could do about the quality of life among patients with MS, while also touching upon the current ideas about what causes MS. Kim Baden-Kristensen is the co-founder and CEO of Brain+, a digital therapeutics company that helps people with brain disorders and injuries to recover their fundamental cognitive brain functions and daily life capabilities by using an app-based cognitive rehabilitation platform, which is developed in close collaboration with patients, clinicians and researchers. https://www.linkedin.com/in/kbadenk/ Alessia Covello is a life science IT consultant working in the field of healthcare technology implementation, and advocating for better services for people with brain conditions and learning disabilities. https://www.linkedin.com/in/alessiacovello/ Talking points: ● Multiple Sclerosis - basic information (min. 3:35-10:10)- What if the multiple sclerosis diagnosis arrives too late? Janet Cardiff’s Forty Part Motet is composed of forty speakers arranged in eight groups of five, configured as a large oval facing each other in the center of the room, and resting on stands so they are roughly just above eye level. The Motet, as Cardiff referred to it in our conversation, is a reworking of the English composer Thomas Tallis'sSpem in Alium (1570), which translates as “Hope in Any Other” and is sung in Latin by a choir of forty voices. The composition is arranged so that the choir, like the speakers, is divided into eight groups of five singers; each group consists of a soprano, tenor, alto, baritone, and bass. The groups alternate singing: first one, than another, sometimes alone, and at a few moments, all together, rising in a crescendo that breaks open the room to a place beyond the physical world. To hear the Motet in its entirety is profound. Spem in Alium is considered one of the greatest works of English music. The Forty Part Motet is equally a contemporary masterwork. It was a privilege, then, to sit down with Cardiff on November 12, 2015, to speak about her practice. - Patricia Maloney Janet Cardiff lives in British Columbia, where she works in collaboration with her partner George Bures Miller. The artist is internationally recognized for immersive multimedia works that create transcendent multisensory experiences and draw the viewer into often unsettling narratives. Cardiff and Miller’s work has been included in recent group exhibitions and biennales such as Soundscapes at the National Gallery, London, the 19th Biennale of Sydney in 2014, and dOCUMENTA (13). Representing Canada at the 2001 Venice Biennale, Cardiff and Miller received the Biennale’s Premio Prize and Benesse Prize. Recently, the artists debuted new site-specific commissions for Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, the Menil Collection, Houston, TX, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain. The Forty Part Motet is on view at Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture, in San Francisco, through January 18, 2016; it is co-presented by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

With Mark Lawson. Hattie Morahan and Dominic Rowan are currently starring in Ibsen's drama A Doll's House, and audiences have been booing Dominic's portrayal of the heroine's chauvinistic husband. The actors discuss handling negative audience reaction, which also happened when Dominic played an egotistical hunk in Penelope Skinner's play, The Village Bike. John Lydon, lead singer of the iconic 1970s punk band The Sex Pistols, says it would be a compliment if their song, God Save the Queen, was included in the Olympic opening ceremony. He explains why the song is not a vicious assault and, as his band PiL release a new album, he talks about his National Treasure status and why retiring is not an option. A third volume of T S Eliot's correspondence has just been published, the product of many years of scholarship - but will such collections continue in the age of email and text message? Professor Steve Connor, from Birkbeck College, London, and Megan Barnard, from the Harry Ransom Centre in Texas, consider the future of the literary letter. A mention in fiction bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey has pushed Thomas Tallis' 40 part motet Spem in Alium to the top of the classical chart. We count down other unexpected cultural hits which have followed an appearance in fiction or film. Producer Nicki Paxman.

Thomas Tallis's work is one of the most elaborate and spectacular pieces of choral music ever written. Scored for 40 voices, the piece is best sung and heard in the round in order to appreciate an extraordinary sonic experience. Choral conductor Simon Halsey, Michael Morpurgo and others discuss the music's spine-tingling effect on both performers and listeners.
Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the death row lawyer Clive Stafford Smith. Clive Stafford Smith spent more than 25 years representing people on death row. He's saved hundreds of lives and counts his clients among his friends. He says his work is his calling - one he was drawn to after writing an essay on capital punishment while at school. Initially he thought it was a history essay and was appalled to find the death sentence was still in use. He planned to become a campaigning journalist, but a summer spent meeting prisoners on death row inmates convinced him that he would be able to achieve more by representing them directly.
