We loved our interview with this week's guest, Alli Diaz! Alli has shown newer agents in our office what it takes to be successful in real estate...even when faced with a pandemic in her first year. As a newer to the business broker, she has the professionalism, work ethic, and positive mindset of a veteran agent. No wonder why she is still continuing to grow her business and make deals happen every day, despite the city-wide quarantine. Alli has understood from day one that building a real estate business is about nurturing relationships, as well as being the knowledge broker for her sphere, and she has applied that philosophy to her current business as she navigates our “new normal” due to Covid-19. We shared a ton of laughs on this episode - especially when we discovered Alli's greatest fear! So sit back, turn it up, and enjoy! #anythingcanhappen ---------- Connect with Alli ➡️ Instagram: @allidiaz.realtor Website: allisondiaz.bairdwarner.com Email: allison.diaz@bairdwarner.com ---------- About Alli Diaz ➡️ A California native, I was drawn to Chicago in 2015 by its rich history and culture and impressive architecture. I love exploring this city and discovering it's neighborhoods' stories and especially love its many iconic vintage homes. I have always had a talent for entertaining and taking care of people. Before entering the world of real estate, I spent 15 years working in the hospitality industry in Chicago and San Francisco. Working alongside Michelin and James Beard awarded chefs, I learned the finer points of customer service and hospitality, and discovered a passion for making people happy. Now I use those skills to listen to my clients, figure out what their wants and dreams are, and help them find exactly what they are looking for. Before my career in hospitality, I got a BA in Spanish at the University of California, Sacramento while also studying interior design, art, and photography. I am bilingual and love good design. Aside from hospitality and vintage architecture, my passions include food, music, and travel. I can often be found exploring the many great restaurants in Logan Square, Humboldt Park, Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village, River North or the West Loop before going out for some music. I also enjoy practicing pottery and sewing, and perusing the many local antique malls for antique modern furniture and art.

Anastasia is an American designer, creating a heritage level Collection one year at a time. Chicago-based fashion designer Anastasia Chatzka was born and raised in Detroit. Those early years spent exploring the expansive Detroit music & art scene helped shape the womenswear designer she is today. Rich colors/prints and textures are woven into the DNA that is recognizably an Anastasia garment. She is most known for her fun flirty dresses and separates – coining the term #soanastasia. After college and honing her skills with designers like Betsey Johnson & Anna Sui Anastasia decided that it was time to start her own clothing line called: Anastasia. The Anastasia brand consists of fun, feminine, and cutting edge ready-to-wear and custom made designs. Anastasia is truly a lifestyle brand; her collections encompass everything from ball gowns to intimates. A primary focus of the brand is domestic manufacturing – Made in America. The Collections are currently produced in Chicago with the finest artisans with more then 30 years of cutting & sewing experience. The Anastasia Collection(s) are designed and constructed to endure season after season of enjoyment. Anastasia has her eponymous boutique in Chicago. Her Atelier is located in Ukrainian Village housed within her boutique. Anastasia is testing new markets and searching for the next best location to open up additional Anastasia boutique. Pop-Up shops are planned for LA & NYC, and the brand is constantly expanding with long-term plans to have a location in Tokyo & Paris in the next 5 years. What you didn’t know but want to know: How did Anastasia get into fashion? The questions most asked – The Beatles. Anastasia wanted a pair of bellbottoms and could not find them in the 90’s. So naturally she made a pair. Her mother took her to the fabric store, showed her how to set up the sewing machines, and she was on her way to discovering the art of fashion. Anastasia loves music! If she was not going to be a designer she wanted to be a leading women in the rock n roll music industry. A few of her muses are Kim Gordon, Kathleen Hanna and Courtney Love. The support of local Detroit music venues actually helped give Anastasia her fashion retail experience. Creating garments all week, then setting up racks of clothes at punk rock shows in Detroit and selling to the concertgoers. Anastasia has a diverse background from college in fine art, textiles, business and fashion. Radio One Chicago airs live every Thursday from 6p to 8p cst on 88.7f/WLUW-FM

Her most recent large-scale public sculpture, titled ”Canoe Fan,” is installed along the Huron River in Ann Arbor, MI.  “Domestic Disturbances” Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, Chicago August 4 - October 1, 2017 Alberto Aguilar, Robert Burnier, Lily Dithrich, Victoria Fuller, Alyssa Miserendino and Alison Ruttan, curated by Victoria Fuller Opening Reception: Friday, August 4, 2017, 6-9pm Artist Talk & Performance: Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 2pm “Domestic Disturbances” is an exhibition of work relating to the home, the human condition, and how our lives are reflected in what we call home. Issues represented in the work of Alberto Aguilar, Robert Burnier, Lily Dithrich, Victoria Fuller, Alyssa Miserendino and Alison Ruttan deal with what constitutes a home, and how homes reflect our selves, outwardly and psychologically. In this exhibition, Robert Burnier's suspended tent installation suggests the impermanence of home, whether in the urban environment, or in war-torn countries. So too does Alison Ruttan find urgent subject matter in the displacement of people, with ceramic sculptures of bombed buildings in Syria. In his photographs and installations, Alberto Aguilar explores formal and personal connections to objects from his own home, and from the homes of local Ukrainian Village residents. Lily Dithrich and Victoria Fuller also draw from everyday domestic objects; the former finds hidden meaning through the manipulation of furniture, and the latter manifests ordinary household items in extraordinary ways. Alyssa Miserendino re-photographs the photographs made by her father, who coped with a personality disorder by using a camera to connect with his family and home life. Homes have such a deep connection to our identity and it is where our most intimate moments play out, for better and for worse. The loss of home by war, disaster, or economic hardship can be devastating. Objects we collect are both personal and impersonal – some have a personal history, and connect to our personal identity, and others are of throwaway value or simply utilitarian. The artists in “Domestic Disturbances” approach the subject of home through psychological and symbolic perspectives, as well as situational ones.

Written and narrated by Peter BejgerA quiet village set amidst rolling hills, forests, and ravines.A revered monastery. And four stories of salvation.A compelling article by Oksana Sikorska in the Ukrainian journal Zbruch outlines the remarkable role of the small western Ukraine village of Univ during the horrors of the Second World War and the Holocaust. These are stories of resilience and triumph in the face of daunting odds and incredible danger. In the 1930s Univ had a little over a thousand souls and a village school. And by the time of the German occupation in 1943, a little boy was peering out a window from the attic of the schoolhouse onto the world outside. To leave the attic was to invite disaster. Most of the local Jewish population had already been deported and/or killed. Public signs posted everywhere warned that anyone assisting Jews would be executed. This boy, Roald Hoffman, who was to become the Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, found shelter in the one room schoolhouse, which was also the home of the village schoolteacher Mykola Dyuk and his wife Maria. What is even more astounding is that Roald’s mother, two uncles, and an aunt were also in hiding at the same location. The group of five remained together there for eighteen months until the end of the German occupation. Mykola and Maria Dyuk were conferred the title of Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem in Israel. The lonely boy Roald gazed upon the forbidden world outside as his mother lifted his spirits with fantastic stories of overseas adventures. And down the road from the schoolhouse a group of other boys he would never get to meet played freely outside. The boys were from the orphanage of the Holy Dormition Lavra, the mother monastery of the Studite Order of Monks of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Historic documents date the Lavra to the fourteenth century. It became a renowned religious publishing and printing center in the seventeenth century. The Studite monks were—and are—a working and praying order with doors open to everyone. They were self-supporting, lived simply on the verge of poverty, and ran orphanages and workshops where they trained young peasant boys in crafts. Their dynamic leader, the Archimandrite Clement, was the brother of the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Andrei Shteptytsky.Kurt Lewin, the son of a rabbi in Lviv, lived in hiding among the Studites in a number of locations for most the war thanks to the effort of the Sheptytsky brothers. He left a vivid account of their daily lives. He wrote, “At six o’clock the working day was over, with the monks changing into habits and assembling for the evensong. A simple meal in the refectory was followed by the Povecheria, a short night service, consisting of reading psalms…one that I always found especially moving. It beseeched the Lord to take care of travelers on sea or land, to heal the sick, to console the dying in their hour of agony, to protect the oppressed and imprisoned, the soldiers on the battlefield, all people suffering and in mourning, to protect everyone everywhere. The priest pronounced the pleading sentences of the litany and the community answered “Hospody podaj I pomyluj” (O Lord, grant it and have mercy on all). Then the monks approached the superior one by one to be blessed. Each monk approached him, kissed an extended hand and left in silence for the monastery and his cell.”Among the orphans cared for by the Studites at Univ were several Jewish boys. They included the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Adam Daniel Rotfeld, now professor of Warsaw University. There was also Dr. Leon Chameides, also a rabbi’s son, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
