It'd be easy to say this one's for the guys, but in all honesty, it's for all as we're all connected and are impacted by the masculine and feminine flow of it all. And, this one is also for the guys. In today's interview, Traver Boehm, author, two-time TEDx speaker, men's coach, and the founder of the UNcivilized Men's Movement, is here to shine light on men's work, men's mental health, relationships, and helping to crack open the issues that are wrapped into today's traumas, abuse, and inequality. He shares on and from his dedication to doing his part to help end the suffering in men, and the suffering caused by men, by guiding them through their own journey into an actualized version of masculinity.Along with this raw, real, heart-felt conversation, Traver shares on his month in a dark room/ashram in Guatemala, his definition and "killing of" his "nice guy", and opens up about honoring his journey through his own struggles, perseverance, and of course, mindfulness practices.Drawing upon an eclectic background ranging from professional bodyguard and Mixed Martial Arts to a Master's Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine and meditation, he's helped men all over the world to become UNcivilized as they wake up to the power of their hearts, the brilliance of their bodies, and the wisdom of their souls so they can blaze their own path. He does this through one-on-one coaching with men or women, couples coaching, and group mentorship.TO LEARN EVEN MORE ON TRAVER :Please visit his website: manuncivilized.comAnd find him on Instagram: @traverboehmAnd all podcast platforms: The UNcivilized Podcast with Traver BoehmHis books “Today I Rise” and “Man UNcivilized” His latest men's leadership course "Kill the Nice Guy"_______________________________________________
To celebrate the 200th episode of this podcast, I asked my good friend, Traver Boehm, to get weird and do something a bit different. I sent him a text asking him to think about a couple of random things he loves or is inspired by so we could talk about them. Neither of us knew what the other was bringing to the table. A surprising feast ensued. I've long loved the podcast conversations Tim Ferriss has with his pal, Kevin Rose, so I decided to emulate that here. This chat is informal and unpredictable. It's also filled with random stories, lots of laughter, and it's quite different than any other I've done before. Please let me know what you think. If you like it, perhaps I can invite more friends to have similar chats. And a huge and grateful THANK YOU to everyone who listens and shares the podcast. I appreciate you. _______________________________________ Traver Boehm is the author of the books Today I Rise and Man UNcivilized. This conversation is hands-down one of my favourites to date on this podcast. We're speaking with Traver Boehm, an author of two books, 2 time TEDx Speaker, men's coach and founder of the UNcivilized Men's Movement, which is radically redefining the way men around the globe experience their masculinity by uniquely blending both primal elements of manhood with massive doses of consciousness. In 2016 after losing a pregnancy, his marriage, and his business partnership all within weeks of each other, he created a radical social experiment and spent the next 12 months as if it were his last year to live, aptly naming it “The Year to Live Project.” Now men all over the world have deemed themselves UNcivilized as they wake up to meditate, feel into their hearts, and train their bodies. Men who can fight, fuck, feed, and feel. And do all four well. In this episode, we're talking about: How men show up in relationships and the biggest reason why women end relationships (outside of abuse) and how men can cultivate a superpower to make the feminine feel safe in unexpected ways The powerful message Traver has for men everywhere and how he's looking to change the entire culture and spread his message, along with addressing where men need to take responsibility for their own emotional health Men's mental health, and the mountain of male trauma that often goes unaddressed as males have so much less social support than women and a suicide rate that is 3X higher Traver's take on one of the biggest reasons why he believes mass shootings end up happening and what to do about it. Traver Boehm is the founder of the UNcivilized Men's Movement, author of Today I Rise, Man UNcivilized, and a two-time TEDx speaker, men's coach and podcaster. Traver draws upon an eclectic background ranging from work as a professional bodyguard, Mixed Martial Artist, and utilizing his Master's Degree in Traditional Chinese MEdicine and Meditation. Traver counsels men, women, and couples on how to better understand men's health and relationship difficulties. We sat down to talk with Traver about: 1. Why we need to work to see that the current paradigm that insists that men are broken is itself broken 2. The importance of a man's ability to dance with his darkness to understand it - so that his darkness doesn't lead him blindly 3. Expanding the archetypes that men are able to embody beyond those of either the “Marlboro Man” or “The Sensitive New Age Guy 4. How women are best able to support the men in their lives in standing in their power and embracing their capacity to heal Traver provides such a vital perspective on what is required for all of us to heal our collective wounding around how we define masculinity, and we know you're going to find his ability to model integrated leadership as inspiring as we did! In 2016 after losing a pregnancy, his marriage, and his business partnership all within weeks of each other, he created a radical year long social experiment to answer the questions, “Who am I and who am I as a man?” Highlights of the year include: Volunteering with the dying as a hospice worker Meditating for 28 days straight in complete isolation and pitch-black darkness in a Guatemalan hut Living in the frigid Utah wilderness for a month with only a knife, a water bottle, and a blanket With a passion for people and a unique lens through which to view the human experience, Traver is a highly sought after teacher in the fields of consciousness, intimacy, and personal development. When not teaching workshops or radically shifting the way men experience their masculinity, Traver can be found obsessing over a single word in front of his laptop, chasing surf around the globe, and being awful at yoga. During our conversation we touch upon topics like: How us as men love to go through hardship together How the world's gotten easier and easier and we now have to re-create the difficulty as men How it's primal for men to want to test themselves against the world Learning through pain and why it's vital that we don't avoid it when it comes into our lives. ▫️ Connect with Traver on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/traverboehm/ ▫️ For more information please visit his website - www.manuncivilized.com ▫️ Get Today I Rise from Amazon - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B073T597VQ/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_tkin_p1_i1 ▫️ Get Man UNcivilized from Amazon - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Man-UNcivilized-hate-youll-book-ebook/dp/B088KTC56G ▫️ Watch Traver's first TedX here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-oQSoTtpX8 ▫️ Watch Traver's second TedX here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_dH1g-I0Fs ▪️ Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thegratefulshow/

There is no space for men's pain. Society expects them to put on brave faces even when they are hurting inside. Men are taught to reject their feelings, and with it, the feminine. In the past, they were once warriors and providers who had to compartmentalize their emotions in order to succeed. But in modern times, men are no longer needed as defenders and breadwinners. Without a clear purpose, men feel lost and act out in harmful ways in order to fill the void. Instead of chiding men for bad behavior, Traver Boehm believes clear instructions are needed to help them move forward. He proposes a new paradigm of masculinity which combines the primal and the divine, the masculine and the feminine. Society needs to acknowledge the male collective wound. We need to ask men to turn inwards and deal with their thoughts and feelings. In Traver's UNcivilized program, men are initiated into a brotherhood by talking about the deep, scary part of themselves. It's a safe space for them to open up, all the while invoking a sense of challenge that men crave. They learn to become whole by harnessing strength and cultivating kindness. Traver is the founder of the UNcivilized Men's Movement. Through coaching and workshops, he gives men a new empowered paradigm with which to express their masculinity. He is the author of Today I Rise, and Man UNcivilized as well as a two time TEDx speaker and podcaster. This week isn't so much an interview. Instead, a long-ranging conversation with an old friend focused around some of the more, uh, volatile aspects of modern masculine culture. The functionality of incel ideology, redpill rhetoric, the rise of victimhood narratives on all sides. In short, we're talking about some heavy stuff. Expect an open dialogue and frank opinions. The standards of masculinity are not exactly clear. On one end of the spectrum, you have the guy driving a Prius who's in touch with his feelings, does yoga, drinks kombucha, has tons of female friends and rejects all forms of violence. On the other end, you have the guy driving a giant pick up truck who's addicted to violence, porn, hating women, dominating men, and who rejects anything perceived as “feminine” such as admitting any kind of weakness or asking for help. There has to be a middle ground. Perhaps a dude in a BMW addicted to violent yoga? I don't know. But it's clear that with the rise of the #MeToo movement, rampant sexual violence and addiction, the normalization of misogynistic hate groups and the fact that an entire generation of young men are now being vastly outnumbered by women in college admissions, men are at a crisis point. Can men be fixed? This week's guest, Traver Boehm believes they can. And he's just the guy to do it. Traver Boehm knows men. How they think, what's behind their behavior, and most importantly — their unique challenges in today's evolving landscape. Traver is the the founder of the UNcivilized Men's Movement, the author of Man UNcivilized as well as a two time TEDx speaker, and podcaster. Traver believes that many men are suffering from unprocessed trauma, more often than not, inflicted by other men. Of course, as one of millions of women who've had to endure unchecked male privilege, nauseating mansplaining, being paid less than male colleagues for the same work, sexual impropriety, walking through parking lots with keys laced through my fingers, being completely diminished, ignored, and charged more for just about everything, I have a somewhat difficult time feeling sorry for the apex predator. On the other hand, I honestly like men and I think it would benefit everyone if the broken ones seriously got their shit together. This is will not be an easy conversation for some of you to hear. If I somehow offend you with my feminist point of view, please know that I don't fucking care. (See list of justifiable complaints above). But -- we have nothing to prove to them. The inspiration behind The Uncivilized Man Movement is the primitive man dealing with unexpressed emotions and pain. One of Traver's passions is to help men connect their emotions and feelings to something bigger than themselves so that they can be a better person.Traver wants to thank every woman who's bought his book and spread his message. With power comes great responsibility, and being in a man's body does bring great power. In other words, don't apologize for being born as a man. Right now, he feels people are digging their heels against the pendulum — a kind of middle ground unto itself."The women are the message spreaders of the world."Traver feels that as the dominant in the room, men are responsible for the women. Today's guest is so special and rapidly becoming one of my favourite humans. We're talking to Traver Boehm again today, originally featured for an epic conversation back on episode 266 - a personal favourite and one of the most powerful episodes on the entire Room To Grow™ Podcast. Never have I received an outpouring of so much incredible feedback about a guest episode, and ever since we mentioned back on episode 266 that we would record a second one, I've had DMs and text messages demanding to know when the new one was being released. As you can tell by the title, this is another casual chat about some super light topics, ha! This conversation will leave you better than before you started listening, if you allow it. It will challenge you to think differently, to see the world through a different lens, and to question the way you show up. It may or may not also be the first time a guest and I have BOTH cried on an episode, so you know it must be a good one. Traver Boehm is an author of two books, 2 time TEDx Speaker, men's coach and founder of the UNcivilized Men's Movement, which is radically redefining the way men around the globe experience their masculinity by uniquely blending both primal elements of manhood with massive doses of consciousness. Drawing upon an eclectic background ranging from professional bodyguarding and Mixed Martial Arts to Traditional Chinese Medicine and meditation, Traver also teaches people to skillfully use the inevitable pain of their lives as fuel for growth and positive change. In 2016 after losing a pregnancy, his marriage, and his business partnership all within weeks of each other, he created a radical social experiment and spent the next 12 months as if it were his last year to live, aptly naming it “The Year to Live Project.” A few topics we cover today: How to have conversations with people that can be highly triggering as you step onto your own path, and embark on your own journey that may likely go against the grain for many others around you The unique challenges that can come with those conversations, including the likelihood of losing a lot of relationships too Why you have to keep showing up with courage every single day if you're going to get to where you're going, whatever that might look like for you AND to hang on to the little moments that will continue to propel you forward even when everything else might feel dark. And so much more…. If you're a human, this is not an episode to be missed. Traver has a powerful mission around what it means to be a man, and this is a topic that affects all of us, no matter how you identify. I urge you to check out Traver's work. His fantastic podcast, both of his books, men's group and the various exciting projects he's always juggling at any given time are transformative, and more people need to know about him. "I'm not like most girls," or, "Don't worry; I'm not crazy."During her time in bodybuilding, Madelyn found that having been raised to believe and assume that men are "better" than women was contributing to her building physical armor around her emotional truth.Being unable to cope with the "curvature of life" manifested as OCD; living through an eating disorder manifested because of being unable to cope with the curvature of body.A woman revealing to her partner the part of her that is "lost," she is letting go of everything her body has been taught/forced/compelled to do.Being able to be sharp and then go into softness is part of the privilege of being a man.Richard Rudd - The Gene Keys - the highest form of love is to arrive just as you are, beyond the things you're into, beyond what you're practicing. "I don't need you to do anything." More Richard Rudd here: maddymoon.com/richard-rudd/Madelyn explores the concept of approaching dating as a practice - holding your body to transmit, "I'm open. Traver Boehm is the author of Today I Rise, and Man UNcivilized. He's a two time TEDx speaker, men's coach and the founder of the UNcivilized Men's Movement. This movement is radically redefining the way men around the globe experience their masculinity by uniquely blending both primal elements of manhood with massive doses of consciousness.Drawing upon an eclectic background ranging from professional bodyguarding and Mixed Martial Arts to Traditional Chinese Medicine and meditation, Traver also teaches people to skillfully use the inevitable pain of their lives as fuel for growth and positive change. In 2016 after losing a pregnancy, his marriage, and his business partnership all within weeks of each other, he created a radical social experiment and spent the next 12 months as if it were his last year to live, aptly naming it “The Year to Live Project.” A few of the experiences included volunteering as a hospice worker, spending 28 days in complete isolation and pitch black darkness in Guatemala, and Living in the frigid Utah wilderness for a month with only a knife, a water bottle, and a blanket. After publishing Today I Rise and receiving an influx of calls specifically from men, Traver began guiding men through their own journey into an actualized version of masculinity by asking them these two questions: “Are you leading or being led?” And, “What are you wounds and what are you doing to heal them?”. When so many said this way of thinking and living was counterintuitive to how they were taught “civilized” men should act, the movement was born. Now men all over the world have deemed themselves UNcivilized as they wake up to meditate, feel into their hearts, and train their bodies. Men who can fight, fuck, feed, and feel. And do all four well. With a passion for people and a unique lens through which to view the human experience, Traver is a highly sought-after transformational coach in the fields of consciousness, relationship, and personal development. Some topics we cover in this conversation include: Why we fear hitting rock bottom Why we're wired to seek comfort vs. seek change How challenging situations allow us to become a new version of ourselves Why we are inclined to hit rock bottom before we make change The roles that denial & ego play in avoiding painful situations The power of choice How we get in our own way of going after the things we want in our lives How we create narratives for ourselves that unknowingly limit us Why we prefer to play the victim vs our own hero
In this episode, my guest Traver Boehm and I discuss how he uses stories to grow his movement. We explore: How he uses story to his advantage on Instagram when so many believe they can't tell a story on social media? What makes a great story? Who's one of his favorite storytellers of all time and why? What advice can he offer to help you become a better storyteller? What you will learn in this episode: Perseverance through pain Living in the now Redefine yourself Who is Traver? What would you do if you lost your marriage, unborn child, and business partner within weeks of each other? Traver, an author and two-time TEDx speaker confronted these issues and now teaches people to use the inevitable pain of their lives as fuel for positive change and growth. He's a men's coach and founder of the UNcivilized Men's Movement. His eclectic background ranges from working as a professional bodyguard and mixed martial artist to practicing traditional Chinese medicine and meditation. Traver sees his mission is to change the culture of masculinity worldwide. He redefines the way men experience masculinity by uniquely blending primal elements of manhood with massive doses of consciousness. In 2016, after suffering several personal losses in a short period, he created a radical social experiment and spent a year living as if it were his last. During his time, he volunteered as a hospice worker for the dying, spent 28 days in Guatemala in complete isolation and darkness, and spent a month living in the Utah wilderness with nothing but a knife, blanket, and water bottle to keep him company. After publishing his book Today I Rise, the influx of feedback he received from other men compelled Traver to birth the seeds of his movement. Many told him his way of thinking and living was counterintuitive to how they've been conditioned to act as men. Now men globally have deemed themselves UNcivilized as they wake up to meditate, feel into their hearts, and train their bodies to fight, fuck, feed, and feel well. “If the pressure is building so much and you're just trying to 'keep it all together', at some point it's going to crack.”- Traver BoehmTraver Boehm is the founder of the UNcivilized Men's Movement, the fastest growing men's movement in the world. He is the author of Today I Rise, and Man UNcivilized as well as a two-time TEDx speaker, men's coach, and podcaster. Traver's approach challenges the stereotyped “Marlboro Man” we have been conditioned to believe is “masculine” and instead has men unpack the suppressed emotions that are dictating their unhealthy behaviors and destructive actions (that negatively affect all of us).I get it: If you're thinking that a men's movement is the LAST thing the world needs right now, I would have agreed with you 100%. I too was skeptical about two white guys talking about “men's work,” but I'm always willing to entertain different viewpoints if there is a clear benefit to society at large (standing desks and shorter work hours come to mind). And it doesn't take long for Traver to convince me that the men's work he is doing is vital to moving towards a more equitable and empathetic society for all genders, races, and other. During the course of this conversation, I even realized my Sunday ninja training group is actually my unofficial men's group (for which my wife will attest to the benefits!).Whether you self-identify as a man, or if you simply have men in your life, this episode will help you better understand what it means to be a “man” in today's society (and spoiler alert: It includes having real emotions and being able to express them honestly).Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One?» Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn:What is men's work?Where personal development falls short and what the missing piece is.The elephant in the room: why should we listen to two white guys talk about men's problems? Why it's important to look at trauma instead of suppressing it.How Traver got involved in men's work.Traver's story of hitting rock bottom. Two important questions he asked himself to change his situation. Why does it have to be a men's only group? Why my wife insists I train with my Ninja group every Sunday. The history of why men are culturally encouraged to suppress their emotions. Why men need a healthy release for the pressure they are under. The gender difference between acceptable emotions to express.Knowing when to be vulnerable and when to be strong. Is it true that a ‘happy wife equals a happy life'?Why all healthy relationships need conflict. The value in doing hard things.Useful Resources Mentioned:Man UNcivilizedThe Man UNcivilized BookThe UNcivilized Podcast with Traver BoehmContinue to Listen & LearnEp28: The Science Behind Depression and Anxiety | with Dr. D and Dr. Michael MarkEp175: Defining Your Own Version of Success & Overcoming the Loneliness of Being a Freelancer | with Michael BaumanHow I burned out as a burnout coach (and then bounced back)Dear Hollywood...We Create Entertainment For a Living.
