Junior Brown on his new album and career highlights

This interview on Backstage Sonoma features host Steve Roby in conversation with renowned Country guitarist and singer Junior Brown. The discussion highlights Brown's illustrious career, marked by the release of 12 studio albums and multiple hits on the Billboard Country Singles Charts. It begins with an overview of Brown's musical journey, including influences from television and radio icons of the 50s and 60s, such as Ernest Tubb, and shows like "Hullabaloo" and "Shindig." Brown delves into the creation of his iconic instrument, the Git Steel double-neck guitar, explaining its practical utility in allowing him to switch between electric and steel guitar seamlessly during performances. The talk transitions into Brown's songwriting process, where he emphasizes the importance of titles and hooks in crafting his lyrics, typically before melodies. “When I'm asked about songwriting, a title will practically write the song if it's a good title, and every line of the song must support it. And if it doesn't, then you're getting away from it. You're drifting.” Host Roby draws attention to Brown's famous live rendition of "Highway Patrol," a song by Red Simpson. This performance showcases Brown's ability to personalize and revitalize classic tunes. Memorable performances, such as playing with rock and roll legend Bo Diddley, are recounted enthusiastically, underscoring significant milestones in Brown's career. The interview also touches on collaborative experiences with country music legends like Ray Price, George Jones, and Hank Thompson, hinting at these encounters' profound impact on Brown. Looking ahead, Brown shares his vision for an innovative album blending surf music with his trademark "twangy" sound, inspired by a painting he created called "Git Steel Surfer." The interview wraps up with mutual appreciation and well-wishes for Brown's future endeavors. Overall, the interview is a compelling blend of nostalgia, technical insights, and forward-looking creativity, offering fans a deeper appreciation of Junior Brown's multifaceted artistry. Junior Brown's California tour will make three stops in the North Bay, starting August 14 at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley. On Friday, August 16, he plays at the Uptown Theatre in Napa and the Raven Theatre in Healdsburg for a show on Saturday, August 17. Ticket info here.

Disney fans rejoice. On this episode, I'm chatting with Ed Comber from Next Stage Preservation. At Next Stage Preservation, they're working to bring Marceline, Missouri's Uptown Theatre back to life. Marceline, Missouri is the boyhood hometown of Walt Disney, and the Uptown Theatre is a cinema on Marceline's Main Street where Walt and Roy premiered “The Great Locomotive Chase”. The Uptown Theatre has a long history, but sadly, in recent years it has fallen into disrepair. A lot of money and work will need to go into bringing it back to life, and Ed is working hard to make that a reality. He's already had some success getting the Uptown Theatre on the National Register of Historic Places, which is no small feat. Listen as Ed and I discuss the theatres' history, the small town of Marceline, Missouri, and what Ed envisions for the reopening of the theatre during its 100th anniversary. Amidst the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Lewis escapes to the real magic kingdoms in California, Napa Valley and Humboldt County. They are lands of free-flowing wine and wondrous strains of weed, and great places to be while the world reaches a new level of self-immolation. From the horrific images on television to the absurd support for the Russian leader from members of the right wing, the cups are not deep enough to truly obliterate the acute sense that things have gone completely off the rails. This foreboding feeling is not helped by your host's lack of skill at tasting wine. It's either drink or not, there is no taste. And while the acute crisis in Ukraine will hopefully end soon, the ongoing climate crisis advances unabated. The view out the windows of the tour bus may be beautiful, but the lack of snow and rain, and the remains of last summer's forest fires are a constant reminder of the larger tragedy taking place. The live rants come from the Uptown Theatre in Napa on Feb. 25th and feature submissions about Vladimir Putin and the Republicans who love him, math teachers, and a deeply analytical disquisition into the mystery of how Lewis' tour has been routed through the worst places in the Golden State. Jen is back on #TheShowKC today - she's feeling better. Good timing, too. We were busy with Casi Joy coming by to say hi and talk about her appearance at our New Year's Eve party at the Uptown Theatre. Make sure you get tickets right now...5 bars, endless rooms of dancing and live music, plus tons of fun! And of course we couldn't resist asking Casi about meeting a Backstreet Boy (Kevin) when she sang the national anthem at last week's Chiefs game. Turns out Kevin's wife is from KC and he's a big Chiefs fan. Then, Danny Z from Country Hill Motors came by to wrap up the 10th Annual Season of Giving. We received more than 1,300 letters of nomination for families to receive one of three life changing gifts. Today, we called Carol, a single mom of 5 whose husband passed away recently, and awarded her a mini-van filled with toys for her family. Listen to the letters of love that her friend Dawn and mother in law wrote to share...we dare you not to cry! What a great way to nearly draw the season to a close...See you Friday!

Friday's show was busy: Truta saw a woman nearly leave her kid at a restaurant; we talk with Jason Mewes (Jay and Silent Bob, Clerks) about coming to KC Comic Con. We also got Robin from the original 1960's Batman on the phone: Burt Ward! Shaylee is excited for the new Taylor Swift. We check out what's coming to the movies this weekend. Jen was left behind as a kid -- and we think it scarred her for life. Bill Brimblecom from Steps Of Faith and his buddy Jason Sudeikis (SNL, Horrible Bosses) calls in to tell us about their charity event, Thundergong, happening this weekend at the Uptown Theatre. Have a great weekend. Thank you, Veterans!

Hey everyone, it's a new episode of The Sixth Degree! We've been busy this fall livin' life, being dads and rooting for the Indians in the World Series, but we wanted to get this episode out before it became completely irrelevant. And because it's an interview with Matt Hoopes, guitarist and co-conspirator behind the excellent rock & roll band Relient K! During Ryan's more impressionable years, Relient K was an up & coming Christian pop-punk band who made their bones in and around Northeast Ohio. After nearly 20 years together, they're still out making great music and touring the country playing shows for thousands of fans. We talk with Matt about their latest record Air For Free, what it's like touring while also being a dad, the state of post-Tooth & Nail Christian music, his new pedal company 1981 Inventions, oh, and the pretty hilarious way that Ryan met the Matt's back in 1998. We had a really fun time hanging with Matt and recording this episode, we hope you all enjoy it too! P.S. - Our apologies for the sub-standard audio quality! We recorded this in the back of Relient K's bus while both the A/C and bus were running, which is not an ideal audio recording environment. We've tried our best to remove the noise but at the end of the day we're still, ya know, amateur podcasters. Thanks for bearing with us!
