Book Vs. Movie: Cat on a Hot Tin RoofThe 1955 Play Vs. the 1958 Classic FilmThe Margos are feeling very Southern in this episode devoted to the work of Tennessee Williams and his personal favorite work--Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The 1955 play was based on his 1952 short story “Three Plays of a Summer Game” and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama during its Broadway debut. The story of the Pollitt family in the Mississippi Delta and their personal grievances and torturous secrets was considered incredibly raw and racy for the conservative 1950s. The 1955 play was directed by Elia Kazan and starred future Dallas star Barbara Bel Geddes as Maggie “The Cat” Pollitt and Ben Gazzara as Brick Pollitt. Burl Ives (“Big Daddy”) and Madeleine Sherwood (“Sister Woman”) would go on to star in the film adaptation in 1958. Bel Geddes and Kazan were nominated for the Tony Award in the original production, and the themes of homophobia, family bonds, and sexism excited audiences then and to this day. The film was directed and adapted by Richard Brooks during a time known as the “Hays Code,” which meant the homosexual yearnings expressed by Brick Pollitt (played by Paul Newman in the movie) for his recently deceased best friend Skipper had to be downplayed. Also, the character of Maggie (Elizabeth Taylor in an Academy Award-winning performance) is more toned down and “likable” to ensure not to offend movie-goer sensitivities. What are the other differences between the original play and the film? Which version did the Margos like better? NCAA – Big Ten votes to add USC, UCLA as members starting in 2024 The Big Ten voted unanimously to add Southern California and UCLA as conference members beginning in 2024. The expansion to 16 teams will happen after the Pac-12’s current media rights contracts with Fox and ESPN expire and make the Big Ten the first conference to stretch from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The announced came almost a year after Oklahoma and Texas formally accepted invitations to join the Southeastern Conference in July 2025. NHL – Red Wings hire Lightning assistant Derek Lalonde as coach The Detroit Red Wings have hired two-time Stanley Cup-winning assistant Derek Lalonde as coach after a lengthy search process. Lalonde was on Jon Cooper’s Tampa Bay Lightning staff the past four years in which they won the Cup twice and most recently reached the final. Lalonde is now in charge of a team in Detroit on the upswing of a long-term rebuild. Lalonde is the first active Cooper assistant to take a head coaching job in the NHL. He replaces Jeff Blashill who coached the Red Wings for seven seasons. Red Wings General Manager Steve Yzerman hired Lalonde when Yzerman held the same position as GM of Tampa Bay. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Chicago Cubs 15, Cincinnati Reds 7 Tigers and White Sox were off Cubs 15, Reds 7 – Wisdom’s slam, 6 RBIs lift Cubs over Reds 15-7 Patrick Wisdom hit a grand slam and a solo homer en route to a career-high six RBIs, rookie Christopher Morel had a career-high five hits and the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 15-7. Seven of those hits came in the eighth against outfielder Max Schrock, who allowed a two-run homer to P.J. Higgins and a solo shot to Morel. Wisdom’s slam off Graham Ashcraft capped a five-run second, and he also connected against Dauri Moreta in the sixth. The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission voted Thursday to reclassify a terminal at the Port of Oakland as a mixed-use area where a new ballpark could be built. The vote is the first in a series of hurdles before the team could get permission to break ground for the project. The Athletics have also been working on plans to relocate to Nevada and find a spot for a new stadium in Las Vegas. NBA – 5 players, $1.1 billion: NBA free agency starts with a bang The NBA generated more basketball related income than ever this past season, the total number coming up just short of $9 billion. Business is good. The first night of free agency underscored how good. Nikola Jokic, Bradley Beal, Devin Booker, Karl-Anthony Towns and Ja Morant agreed to extensions worth more than $1 billion by the time they expire, highlighting the moves made Thursday when the NBA’s annual free-agent negotiating window opened. NBA – AP source: Kevin Durant asks for trade from Brooklyn Nets A person with direct knowledge of the decision says Kevin Durant has requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets. The decision revealed just before the start of NBA free agency undoubtedly will have teams scrambling to put together enormous offers for the perennial All-Star. The Nets have been working with Durant to find a trade partner, and he has multiple teams on his preferred list. That’s according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither the player nor Brooklyn revealed any details publicly. ESPN first reported Durant’s trade request and cited Phoenix and Miami as two of his preferred destinations. Durant is a 12-time All-Star, 4-time scoring champion, 3-time Olympic gold medalist and 2-time NBA champion. The 24-year-old Bridges averaged career highs with 20.2 points and seven rebounds last season for the Hornets in what amounted to a breakout season while playing alongside All-Star LaMelo Ball. Bridges is also a rapper, who goes by the name RTB MB. The LIV Golf series, funded by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, was making its first stop on American soil this week after a debut this month outside of London. This Monday morning episode is full of anticipation about the possibilities of Brendon Todd going back-to-back on the PGA Tour. Brendan and Andy discuss the Mayakoba leaderboard with a few holes left to go on Monday morning. They also discuss Vaughn Taylor’s sweaty hat, why Mich Ultra would choose him to sponsor, the alcohol content of Mich Ultra, Zach Johnson playing ahead, Matt Kuchar’s bar tab for making an ace, and Brian Gay’s new car for doing the same. Andy is also extremely disappointed in the fan turnout, which prompts a conspiracy theory about crisis actors being shipped in and a Potemkin Village constructed for the Golf Channel cameras. Over on the European Tour, they discuss Tommy Fleetwood’s win at the Nedbank and the many close calls he’s had without a win over the last two years. Is he the British Rickie? The Assistant Pro National Championship also gets a shout out before a segment on some of the luckiest breaks from this weekend. News wraps with Russell Henley self-reporting his violation of the one-ball rule and some ranting on the merits of the rule.
This episode we discuss Polina's pick Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958). She explains how her connection is more tied to the play and Tennessee Williams than the movie. The subtext artificially created from the Hayes code confused Diana. Thanks to our sponsor Frankie & Myrrh! The play can be viewed here and the scene Polina references is on page 28. Brick, an alcoholic ex-football player, drinks his days away and resists the affections of his wife, Maggie. His reunion with his father, Big Daddy, who is dying of cancer, jogs a host of memories and revelations for both father and son. Based on the play by Tennessee Williams and stars Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Burl Ives, Jack Carson, Judith Anderson, Madeleine Sherwood, Larry Gates, and Vaughn Taylor. The Putting Couch Podcast presented by SeeMore Putter Company
On this week's episode of the Putting Couch we talk with one of the world's leading putting instructors, Pat O'Brien. Pat is the Director of Instruction at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas, TX and is SeeMore Putter Company's Global Ambassador. In Episode 10 of The Putting Couch Podcast, O'Brien dives into one of the KEY putting fundamentals - GRIP. Pat offers incredible insight into the many different styles of a putting grip and his theory on a proper grip and how that sets the tone for tension free putting stroke. O’Brien – putting instructor to Zach Johnson, Vaughn Taylor, Andrew Landry and many other top PGA Tour and developing players, has been teaching putting and the SeeMore System around the world for more than 20 years, ever since he watched his good friend the late Payne Stewart first benefit from the SeeMore putting system to win 1999 US Open and lead the PGA Tour in putting statistics that year.
Teddy is back after finding Vaughn Taylor at a huge price last week, the team are back to look at a brand new event in Michigan and the Andalucia Masters.
Peter Jennings, Jason Sobel and Drew "The Sleeze" Stoltz break down this week's Rocket Mortgage Classic, providing the definitive betting and DFS preview for this new event. Fresh off giving out a winning Chez Reavie play last week, Drew is once again high on former amateur darling (and future pro stud) Viktor Hovland, the pride of golf fanatics from Oslo to Stillwater. Peter is more bullish on Vaughn Taylor, and Jason joins the gang as they sell hard on Bubba Watson. After the guys give out their favorite plays they finish with a surefire DFS lineup, hopefully capturing some more magic from "The Chez Whisperer" a.k.a. "The Santa Claus of Golf" himself, Drew Stoltz. Tournament Preview Begins: 9:00 Viktor Hovland vs. Bubba Watson: 13:00 Jennings on V. Taylor: 17:45 DraftKings lineup: 24:00 Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
648: Pat O’Brien, putting coach to Zach Johnson, Payne Stewart, KJ Choi, Stewart Cink, Vaughn Taylor, and Kelly Craft returns for part two of our conversation on putting. This time we dig into Pat’s instruction on how to have the perfect putting grip by getting the club into your fingers, not your palms. And there are a number of putting myths that so many of us believe to be true, but are not really aware of how they can be leading to extra strokes. After watching round 3 of the Open Championship at Carnoustie this year, we were witness to some amazing putting prowess by Zach Johnson. So we invited CEO of SeeMore putters, Jim Grundberg, to return to share what it felt like to see Zach shine with his SeeMore putter.WIN! WIN! WIN!! 647: Pat O’Brien has been the putting coach for Payne Stewart, Zach Johnson, KJ Choi, Stewart Cink, Vaughn Taylor, and Kelly Craft to name just a few. He’s also a brand ambassador for SeeMore putters. Did you happen to notice the amazingly long putts that Zach Johnson sunk on Saturday at this year’s Open Championship at Carnoustie? Yes, he’s still using a SeeMore putter! In the first of two episodes with Pat, we learn the history of how he became the caddy, putting coach, and close friend of Payne Stewart, why he chose to coach over being a Tour Pro, and why he is such a big fan of the SeeMore putters. In episode 644 with Dr. Joe Parent, he mentioned ShoeTips as a way to stay focused on only one or two swing thoughts during your round. The folks at ShoeTips.com have made a generous offer of 25% off your purchase with the checkout code “golfsmarter”. However, there are still those diehards who will fight to the last. Among them is Joseph Paradine, a Rebel Scout who is still getting reconnaissance on Union targets. Ignoring the treasonous advice of his cowardly subordinate Dauger, Paradine decides to stealthily investigate a small town that should be a hotbed of Union activity but is strangely quiet. Paradine discovers the reason for the stillness is that everyone in the town has been frozen into immobility as if by magic. The only man stirring is a wild-looking old man named Teague, who claims that he is a warlock who has cast the spell of stillness. Teague says that he will be dead before the end of the day, so he gives his book of black magic to Paradine. The old man tells him the book can win the war for the South...but the price may be the very soul of the Confederacy! "Still Valley" is a fairly average episode of "Twilight Zone" but still boasts some notable performances and images. As Paradine, veteran actor Gary Merrill hits just the right note of weariness and toughness. He also delivers some pretty florid dialogue. Vaughn Taylor as Old Man Teague is pretty creepy and looks like someone who wouldn't have any problem trafficking with the Devil. The "stillness" of the townsfolk is imperfectly realized. When Paradine inspects a row of frozen soldiers, many can be seen blinking and twitching. The final denouement is a memorable one and suggests that there IS such a thing as too high a price for victory. Teague: "You've got the right of it, Johnny Reb. That's just who you're in league with. The Devil! The Devil, you're in league with the Devil! The Devil...."
