Episode 258: For a band that released its independent debut album in 2017, the Teskey Brothers have come a long way. From our perspective here in Nashville, that would be 9,700 miles, the distance to their home town of Warrandyte, New South Wales, Australia. Raised on classic soul and R&B music, Sam and Josh Teskey started making music together as kids and became staples of the Melbourne music scene. They didn't have huge aspirations, but when their first record knocked out people close to home, they took their classic Stax/Muscle Shoals sound to the world and the world replied. This year they've toured Europe for five months and played major sold out venues, including the Ryman Auditorium behind their current album the Winding Way. Guitarist, songwriter, singer and recording engineer Sam Teskey tells me about their journey.
Our guest this week is long-term socialist and ant-fascist activist Daniel Dadich. Daniel is a second generation migrant, a union delegate, a social worker and a proud socialist. He's lived in Melbourne his whole life and have experienced racist policing and harassment first-hand. He's been involved in political campaigns in Melbourne for more than 15 years and has been a candidate for the Victorian Socialists in three elections. In 2022 he ran in the federal seat of Maribyrnong and confronted the former Labor Party leader, and sitting member for Maribyrnong Bill Shorten about Labor's appalling stance on refugee rights while they were both campaigning at a pre-poll booth on Saturday 14 May. Part of their discussion was captured on camera by a VS volunteer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3k-pYAGZxY Topics discussed include: Why he became involved in socialist politics. What the links between socialist politics and veganism are. What Victorian Socialists stand for and his experience of being a candidate. The Warrandyte by-election. The rise of the far right. The Campaign Against Racism and Facism and the neo-Nazi gym in Sunshine. And how people can get involved if they are interested. Stephanie Hazel interviews Folk Herbalist, Deep Ecologist and traditionally trained Shipibo Curandera Skye Cielita Flor. In this episode, we explore questions such as: What does it mean to take a plant out of context? What do we leave behind when we extract a single active chemical from a medicinal plant? What do we lose when we take a single aspect of Shipibo culture, like ayahuasca ceremonies, but leave all of the cultural nest of animistic relationships with plants and land behind? Skye is a South African woman currently living in Warrandyte in Melbourne, and is one of the few people I know who has completed a 4 year immersive apprenticeship in the Peruvian Amazon, where she studied with Shipibo curanderos to become a healer, an apprenticeship that involved extensive training in ritual and healing use of ayahuasca, and deep dietas with other powerful medicinal plants. Four years of full time training in the amazon! This actually makes her the most qualified person I know to comment on the rising wave of ayahuasca use in the west. She also completed 3 years of full time Chinese Medicine apprenticeship, and worked as a wilderness guide in South Africa. When she came to Australia, she was confronted with the deep grief of having lost the beautiful animism of Shipibo culture and of finding herself bereft of the plants who had become her friends. Beyond this, she felt afresh the aching wounds of Western disconnection from the living world around us. She had found herself entirely out of context! Her pathway to grounding into the place she is now was deep ecology., which she believes is the missing framework that any animistic or psychedelic experience needs to be nestled into for any western person to actually receive the healing they need. Her work now primarily consists of facilitating experiential deep ecology workshops and retreats, under the guidance of John Seed, who was previously interviewed on this podcast. You can check out an upcoming webinar with Skye and John in September if you are inspired to learn from this heart-felt, intellectually sophisticated and wildly experienced woman and plant collaborator. Lily of The Herbs and Stephanie Hazel go deeply and humbly into the mystery of herbalism: how little we actually know about plants, how true herbal mastery means being able to hold what you do know and the endless mystery of what you can't know, how finding yourself walking the plant path can be a mystery of its own. They share powerful personal stories of Mugwort that span expelling enormous worms and appearing as a spirit with the power to heal sexual trauma. Julie Quinton shares her truly touching and inspiring personal story of her life in business. Her husband Brian purchased the independent supermarket in January 2000. Sadly, just seven years later in August 2007 at the age of just 49, Brian died from Pancreatic Cancer. In devastating circumstances and with no prior experience in the business, Julie took on the challenge of taking over the family business to ensure Brian’s legacy continued for the next generation of family members. The business has not only survived, but has thrived ever since in an industry where independents are under increasing pressure and most struggle. Quinton’s SUPA IGA is a family owned and operated independent supermarket with a core focus on providing outstanding service, fresh local produce and a passion for supporting the local community in Warrandyte. They are Warrandyte’s biggest employer with around 100 employees, and they also support every sporting club, school, kindergarten and community group in Warrandyte. Quinton’s SUPA IGA was also the first supermarket in Australia to announce that they were no longer stocking Caged or Barn Laid eggs – only stocking Free Range eggs from ethical farms. They were also awarded the Manningham Business of the Year in 2013. Listen to Julie share all the challenges she has faced since becoming owner of the business, how she has been able to achieve so much, how she has set up the business for success for many years to come and her plans for the future. My Co-Host CJ Palin from Riot on the Set and I will iplay music and talk about this great band for an hour. We were going to interview them but it would have cost them the national debt to call us from Australia Half Mile Harvest is the 4th release from the 4 piece soul/blues band The Teskey Brothers. The Album is independently Produced, recorded and mixed by the bands own Brendon Love and Sam Teskey at their home studio in Warrandyte, Vic. The album features an all analogue production, utilizing a 24-track Studer 2 inch tape machine. These recordings Feature the band playing live in a room together including Vocals. The album is recorded and mixed completely analogue With no computers, just like the boys favourite artists did in the 60's and 70's. The result is a lush classic old school sounding authentic blues and soul record. In spetember 2016 The Teskey Brothers released the first single - Pain and misery - from forthcoming album. It was a great introduction to the album and has been well received both nationally and abroad. Pain and misery earned airplay on PBS, RRR, Triple J, Radio national and many more community Radio stations, demonstrating the bands Broad appeal to many demographics.
Australian summer 2016-17 is officially over, and it has been a weird and unsettled one. Sarah Perkins Kirkpatrick, research fellow at the University of New South Wales with a specialsm in climate extremes related to droughts and heat waves in Australia is here with Dirt Radio this week to explain why.The Yarra River has its own advocate. He’s Andrew Kelly, the Yarra Riverkeeper. The river runs for 242 kilometres through the Yarra Valley, across Melbourne's suburbs, and to the CBD. Environmentalists have been lobbying for better planning rules for years, particularly around the 41-kilometre stretch between Richmond and Warrandyte, where development pressure is the greatest. Now there’s the Yarra River Action Plan – just announced by the Andrew’s government.

'First-class marksman' shows the isolated figure of Ned Kelly in the solid black armour that is Nolan's most inventive pictorial device, its flat abstracted shape incongruously placed against a landscape of lyrical delicacy. The title refers to an incident which took place in Victoria's Wombat Ranges, when Kelly and his gang were practising their marksmanship, firing hundreds of rounds at surrounding trees from a bullet-proof hide-out. Nolan made many paintings of the outlaw Kelly between 1946 and 1947 at Heide, home of patrons John and Sunday Reed. This was the only panel in the series not painted on the Heide dining table, but at the house of Russian expatriate artist Danila Vassilieff at Warrandyte, where Nolan was caretaker for two months. Its informal swift and transparent rendering is a precursor to subsequent series based on outback Queensland, such as 'Pretty Polly mine' 1948.
