Consider your organization and ask yourself, "How many women are in leadership roles?" Many companies may have fewer than five women in senior positions. But what's the reason behind this? Could it be that we're still navigating a male-dominated society? Or perhaps some women feel reluctant to step into these roles? The reality behind the second query might astonish you. In this episode of the Int-HER-rupt podcast, host Linda Yates engages in an insightful discussion with executive coach Loree Philip on the disparity of women in senior leadership positions.  Linda and Loree share inspiring anecdotes from their own journeys and offer valuable strategies for navigating the complexities of leadership in male-dominated industries. Embark on a journey of empowerment and enlightenment in this episode! Loree Philip's Background Loree Philip is a former Boeing professional turned entrepreneur, executive coach, and the host of the top 5% global podcast "Daring to Leap."  She is also the founder of weSpark, a coaching and training firm dedicated to empowering women to overcome self-doubt and fears to advance in their careers. Breaking Down the Barriers to Women's Leadership Linda and Loree elaborate on the disparities in senior leadership positions between men and women, citing research and statistics to set the stage for their discussion.  They pinpoint the decline in the percentage of female CEOs of Fortune 500 companies and discuss the need to address why women shied away from leadership roles. Loree's Leadership Journey at Boeing Loree shares her experience working in a heavily male-dominated setting within the engineering and defense sectors.  Her career progression and the observations on the challenges women face in leadership roles provide a powerful context for the discussion. Why Women Shy Away from Leadership Linda and Loree delve into the factors contributing to women self-selecting out of leadership positions.  Loree emphasizes the lack of relatable female role models, the pressure to sacrifice family time, and the internal and external barriers hindering women from thriving in leadership roles. Advice for Women Considering Leadership Roles Loree offers empowering advice to women who may feel uncertain about stepping into leadership positions. She underscores the significance of recognizing their qualifications and being open to stretch assignments as opportunities for growth. Also, Loree emphasizes the significance of authentic leadership as a key trait for women leaders. She encourages women to embrace their unique leadership styles and bring authenticity to their roles. Tune in now to join the conversation and take your own daring leap! “One of the things that I've noticed is that for women looking towards those roles or testing them out is that we don't have a lot of good female role models to look at these leadership positions, see ourselves in them, and see ourselves doing them successfully from an authentic way." - Loree Philip.  Resources weSpark Daring To Leap Podcast Loree Philip on LinkedIn If this episode connected with you, reach out to Linda and let her know. Welcome to episode 45 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week I welcome back my special guest co-host, M. Quentin Williams, CEO & Founder of Dedication to Community.Together, we interview Scott Williams, Executive Producer and Writer for the CBS hit TV show "NCIS". Scott was born and raised in Yonkers, NY. After his first semester at SUNY Cortland, he was told by the Dean that he was failing all subjects except English. That is when his life changed and Scott tried his hand at writing. Truly just takes one person to provide direction or believe in us when we are unsure of our own direction. While going to school and going after an acting and writing career, Scott spent several years bartending both in NY and then in California. He shares how his bartending experience actually helped him land a job at 'NYPD Blue'. Scott wrote feature scripts for Ron Howard, Kevin Costner and Ray Liotta, which ultimately led him to television.  Since then, he's written and produced many shows, including “Third Watch”, “Crossing Jordan”, “Bones” and “Castle”. For the last 11 seasons, he's served as an Executive Producer and writer on CBS' top-rated show “NCIS.”Scott is also co-founder of “Shane's Inspiration” InclusionMatters.org, a Los Angeles based non-profit organization dedicated to developing inclusive playgrounds around the world and providing education programs teaching tolerance and inclusion. Scott and his wife Catherine founded Shane's Inspiration in memory of their son Shane, who passed away in 1997 from Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Today, Shane's Inspiration has opened 72 inclusive playgrounds throughout the United States and in Canada, Mexico, Ecuador, Israel, and Russia with over 55 more in development. Visit: inclusionmatters.org for more information.Having lost both his father and sister to cancer, Scott also serves as Advisory Board president for WeSPARK, an LA-based non-profit that provides support and programs for patients and their families dealing with cancer. www.wespark.org.Throughout this interview Scott is so genuine. He shares about experiencing imposter syndrome still 25 years later from behind the computer as he is writing. He also shares what he does to put it at bay. His words exactly to himself, "I'll show you". Scott also talks about not letting worry be your bully. Q shares an incredible quote from Gandhi during this part of the interview. If you ever let worry take over, take a listen to this.  Scott talks about remaining humble and not letting our ego's rule us. He shares something funny during this part of the conversation, "Mark Harmon takes out his garbage too." Sometimes we forget that we are all just humans. There are so many words of incredible wisdom and nuggets of information shared in this extremely inspirational interview. Listen in to hear Scott's answer to, 'if I knew then, what I know now'. Thank you to Scott and my guest co-host Q for sharing their time and journey's with all of us. Next week, my guest is Susan Slotnick,  author of Flight: The Dance of Freedom. She is a choreographer, humanitarian, and artist.  She has helped change the perspective and mindset of countless incarcerated men by allowing them to experience emotions through transcendental art. Forty years ago this November, one of the most innovative horror movies in Hollywood history hit theaters and set the box office on fire. Based on a then up-and-coming writer named Stephen King, Carrie crystallized all the agonies of adolescence into the story of a shy, sheltered girl with telekinetic powers. Director Brian De Palma had been working in the independent field since the 1960s, but this film was his first box office hit and put him on the map as one of the major auteurs of the New Hollywood. De Palma filled the cast with many talented young actors making their first important features, including John Travolta, Nancy Allen, Amy Irving, William Katt, P.J. Soles, and Betty Buckley. For the leading role, he chose relative newcomer Sissy Spacek, who received her first Oscar nomination for the film, and to play her religious fanatic mother, De Palma cast Piper Laurie in her first film since The Hustler 15 years earlier. (She received her second Oscar nomination for her performance.) Today's my guest is Nancy Allen who went on to star in several other films directed by De Palma, including Dressed to Kill and Blow Out, she also starred in Strange Invaders, RoboCop, and Out of Sight. On this episode, we talk about the 40th Anniversary of Carrie, her work with DePalma, Spielberg and Soderberg. We also touch on Hollywood remakes, our shared love for the Andy Griffith film Face in The Crowd and how her character Chris in Carrie could speak with her mouth full. We also chat about her involvement with WeSpark a non-profit organization that offers free support groups, integrative therapies, and creative and educational workshops to all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. Carrie is the founder of BRA – Business Relationship Alliance, a network of powerful women devoted to advancing female-owned businesses by providing the community, collaboration, mentorship, empowerment and support needed to flourish as an entrepreneur. Carrie set out to create a community where the key factor was the advancement of female entrepreneurs (at all levels) and built its foundation on three fundamental core values: 1. Collaboration over competition; 2. Commitment to each other as professionals and to hire within their network first; and 3. Advance women as experts in business through educational opportunities. In doing that, she also created a community where women could be viewed as valuable while still feeling comfortable being vulnerable. Once she hit 100 members she left running the school to focus on BRA full time. Carrie is also an active philanthropist donating both anonymously and publicly to organizations like Dress for Success, a nonprofit organization that empowers women to achieve economic independence, and WeSpark, which provides cancer treatment centers in Los Angeles. On this episode, we talk about the 40th Anniversary of Carrie, her work with DePalma, Speilberg and Soderberg. You can find more information by going to www.wespark.org If you are in the Los Angeles area, there will be a cast and crew screening of Carrie on Wednesday, November 9, at 7:30 PM at the Ahrya Fine Arts Theatre Followed by a Q&A with Nancy Allen, Piper Laurie, William Katt, P.J. Soles and Oscar-winning film editor Paul Hirsch. Speaking with Nancy was an absolute pleasure, she's an incredibly gifted actor, funny, smart, tells great stories and has a genuinely kind soul. This interview was a pretty humbling experience, I'm incredibly grateful she took time out of her night to sit down and chat.
