She was the daughter of a poor Italian tenant farmer, had no chance to go to school, never learned to read or write. When Maria made her First Communion not long before her death, she was one of the larger and somewhat backward members of the class. On a hot afternoon in July, Maria was sitting at the top of the stairs of her house, mending a shirt. She was not quite 12 years old, but physically mature. A cart stopped outside, and a neighbor, 18-year-old Alessandro, ran up the stairs. He seized her and pulled her into a bedroom. She struggled and tried to call for help. “No, God does not wish it,” she cried out. “It is a sin. You would go to hell for it.” Alessandro began striking at her blindly with a long dagger. Maria was taken to a hospital. Her last hours were marked by the usual simple compassion of the good—concern about where her mother would sleep, forgiveness of her murderer (she had been in fear of him, but did not say anything lest she cause trouble to his family), and her devout welcoming of Viaticum, her last Holy Communion. She died about 24 hours after the attack. Alessandro was sentenced to 30 years in prison. For a long time he was unrepentant and surly. One night he had a dream or vision of Maria gathering flowers and offering them to him. His life changed. When he was released after 27 years, his first act was to beg the forgiveness of Maria's mother. Devotion to the young martyr grew, miracles were worked, and in less than half a century she was canonized. At her beatification in 1947, her 82-year-old mother, two sisters, and her brother appeared with Pope Pius XII on the balcony of St. Peter's. Three years later, at Maria's canonization, a 66-year-old Alessandro Serenelli knelt among the quarter-million people and cried tears of joy. Reflection Maria may have had trouble with catechism, but she had no trouble with faith. God's will was holiness, decency, respect for one's body, absolute obedience, total trust. In a complex world, her faith was simple: It is a privilege to be loved by God, and to love him—at any cost. When we talk about being a vegan, we often think of our health as being all bright and fresh. Today, we are going to meet someone who had a different experience. Our guest today, Maria Cebrian, had been a vegetarian and vegan on-and-off for ten years before fully committing to the lifestyle five years ago. She would go vegan for some months, only to start to feel a bit tired or foggy. If we have to put it the right way, she was never a perfect vegan and was often nutrient deficient. Our guest Maria decided to go vegan when she heard about how animal agriculture impacts the environment and how animals are treated – she knew this wasn't right. When Maria's co-worker, Hava Horowitz, shared her idea of creating a multivitamin specifically tailored for vegans, she absolutely loved it. That was precisely what Maria needed to solve all the nutrient deficiencies. That's how an all-in-one pill that was good for both vegans and the planet came to the world with the name Terraseed Multivitamin. In today's episode of the Plant-based profit show, Maria recalls her early vegan being days where everything seemed blurry. Her life felt dull because of all the nutrient deficiencies. She later describes how magically they came to the blooming idea of multivitamins, but the thought of adding more waste to the world made them rethink their decision. She says in the show that it was both a real hassle and a bummer. They knew they had to do things differently. And a question of how to get everything a vegan needs in just one pill a day without generating more waste rose. The answer came in the form of a beautifully designed, fully compostable packaging, becoming that most sustainable supplement available. In January 2021, Tarraseed became the first vegan company ever selected into Techstars Startup-Accelerator Program. Later in the show, Maria talks about her passion for mountain running and her memorable experiences. Moving forward, Maria gives away some fascinating details about her multivitamins and her ambassador program – her innovative social media techniques and everything she has learned.

Maria Fujihara, Sinai Technologies: Helping corporations mitigate climate change through decarbonization software, Ep 139   Maria Fujihara firmly believes in the power of the private sector to be a key piece in combating climate change. After a successful career in Brazil’s Green Building Council, Maria decided that if she was to work in that space again it would be on her own terms.    She fulfilled that desire by founding Sinai Technologies, a decarbonization platform that helps corporations manage their carbon emissions and allocate capital for mitigation efforts. They offer a complete guide to companies on how to navigate across their carbon journey from beginning to end.   I sat down with Maria to talk about what these pathways look like for a big company and why it’s important to transition to a low carbon economy. We also discuss her experience working in the nonprofit sector before entering the entrepreneurial world and Maria offers advice to other entrepreneurs on how to deal with the ecosystem’s gatekeepers. On attending Singularity university When Maria was thinking about what her next step would be after working at a nonprofit, she knew she wanted to build a business but didn’t know where to start. She decided to enroll at Singularity university where she quickly learned about the iterative process involved in building a business through a four-month-long incubation program.    Learn more about Maria’s journey in Silicon Valley and her insights on Brazil’s ecosystem in this episode of Crossing Borders. Entrepreneurship lessons at Green Building Council Brasil Maria explains that in Brazil nonprofit organizations have to sustain themselves financially. As a result, her job was to find revenue streams for the organization by developing products and finding sponsors. She considers that this aspect of her previous work shaped her as an entrepreneur and instilled in her certain skills and values.    Find out why Maria was amazed by entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley and how her path differs from theirs in this episode of Crossing Borders. Transitioning to a low carbon economy Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, but also one of the most complex. Even though the problem can seem a lot bigger than the available solutions, Maria believes that creating at least one piece of the solution is key to moving the needle. That’s why she was careful in choosing the problem she wanted to tackle.   Listen to this episode the Crossing Borders podcast to learn more about Maria’s thought process in narrowing down her solution.   Maria Fujihara is bringing sustainability and accountability to corporations through her decarbonization software. Her extensive experience in the nonprofit sector and working closely with governments gives her valuable insight on the pieces that need to be moved in order to effectively combat climate change.    Outline of this episode: [1:40] - About Sinai [5:41] - Green Building Council in Brazil [7:52] - Switching sectors [10:26] - Lessons learned from the nonprofit world [13:37] - On raising money with just an idea [16:31] - Advice to entrepreneurs on gatekeeping [18:10] - Choosing a problem you want to solve [22:04] - Books, blogs, and podcast recommendations [23:27] - Advice to Maria’s younger self [24:08] - Next steps for Sinai   Resources & people mentioned: Maria Fujihara Sinai Technologies  Green Building Council Brasil Singularity University Podcasts: The mindbodygreen podcast, Product Decoding (Sparrow Ventures)

After a 30-year internal conflict in Guatemala, more people were dying from hunger and poverty than from the war. Growing up in the Philippines, she moved to New York in 1992, received her M.B.A. from Fordham University, and took a job as a senior credit analyst. On Palm Sunday, April 13, 2003, Maria attended mass at St. Malachy’s Church. She stopped by her office that afternoon, excited about an appointment she had later that day for a cosmetic laser procedure. When Maria didn’t show up for work that Monday or Tuesday, everyone agreed that it was not like her to miss work without calling. On Wednesday, the police were called to her apartment, but there was no sign of Maria. It would take months before detectives searched her emails and ran a check on her laser specialist, Dean Faiello, uncovering his lengthy criminal history.Join us at the quiet end for The Pretender. Dean Faiello had looks, intelligence, and charm, but Maria’s disappearance would reveal that he lacked a conscience.

Whatever your circumstances right now, I pray this honest conversation about learning to trust God's goodness gives you hope to persist and present your requests to the Lord. There is no worry too big for him; there is no amount of doubt He cannot handle. Maria's story will help you press into Jesus and come out on the other side of today's concerns with a deeper trust in God and a desire to abide with Him in all things. Weakness, grief, loss, and pain are not topics we love to talk about. Profound pain makes me want to run and hide and isolate from even the people who love me most. When Maria lost her parents in a plane crash, the story of her brother surviving his second plane crash made their story very public; but publicity was not the world in which she wanted to work out her feelings and questions for God. This beautiful and honest conversation about finding God's goodness amidst terribly loss feels timely given the season of loss, grief and struggle in our nation right now due to the coronavirus pandemic. No matter how these circumstances have touched you – very much or very little – I pray that the moments you spend listening to Maria's journey to believing God's goodness for herself will move you to trusting in Him more as well. Specifically, pay attention to the following in this episode: That it's okay to question God; your questions are not a threat to Him. What it means to delight in weakness and trust His strength How grief can lead the way for important discoveries in your faith. What it looks like to “practice” God's truth and His character and how that grows your trust for Him. James from Lynwood moved here from San Marcos, Texas, three months ago to be with his girlfriend Maria who is an engineer for Boeing. He says he still loves her, but his own life feels like it’s going the wrong direction, mostly because totally he hates living in the Northwest. James says at first it was the rain and now it’s the snow and he finds the gray skies depressing and he wants to move back to Texas. Fitz says he understands, being from Texas himself, but it takes times, and James should open his eyes and heart and enjoy that the Northwest is a “Postcard Everywhere You Look.” But James sounds like has made up his mind, and he’s going back to Texas whether Maria comes or not. When Maria comes on, she says she understands it’s easier for her since she has a cool job and James doesn’t really have much to do yet, but he’s being unreasonably impatient about the weather; they moved here in the darkest part of the year and he needs to give it a lot more time to see everything the area has to offer and how beautiful it can be. But this all seems to be falling on deaf ears. Is James a lost cause?

She explains the need for differentiation, how to create aspiration for our brand, and how to sell an unnecessary product (hint: almost all of us sell unnecessary things!). Maria even disagrees with me on the value of a formal business plan.

In this episode of the Parenting Then and Now podcast, Maria discusses her experience in relation to her upbringing, how she got through the fog of PPD, and the effect of social media on new parents (it's not positive). When Maria isn’t writing, she can be found embarking on adventures throughout southeast Michigan and beyond, where she lives with her husband and three book-loving children. Tune in to hear us discuss her journey to becoming an author and building a thriving business (and family!) while following her passions. Listen + subscribe on iTunes // Stitcher Maria's Boss Mom Story As we dive in, Maria shares that she never actually intended to be an entrepreneur. Growing up she wanted to be a teacher and a mom - both dreams she would later go on to fulfill!! To both her and everyone around her it was quite a shock when she made the decision to leave teaching and pursue writing her children's books. But the decision was fueled by both a passion to fulfill a need that she saw, and do what made sense for her growing family. "I felt like there was a problem, that we were lacking children’s literature with realistic kids - real characters that kids could relate to with real world problems.” (3:36) So, Maria wrote her first book Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun, and a few weeks later she got pregnant with her first baby! After her book came out and her daughter was born, she went down to teaching part-time, and didn't have much of a plan beyond that. One year turned into two, and eventually she realized that she wanted more time to pour into both her growing family, and her growing business (which she was LOVING!) “It wasn't just writing books, but spreading these amazing messages to children and families.” (4:10) A Day in the Life.... When I asked Maria what her day-to-day life as an author, publisher and mom looked like, she shared that it didn't look like what most people would think. “Being a writer you would think that I would spend my days writing and I don’t!” (4:30) As a work-at-home mom to three kids (ages 2, 5 and 7) her days start early so she can get some good creative work time in, as well as some self care. She also books around 75 speaking engagements per year, but most all of them are local as she has made the decision not to travel away from her family if she can help it. Maria also describes that every day is a journey to just figure out what works best in that season. “I didn’t plan for any of it, and Dana I am a planner so when baby #3 came along surprisingly (and was due on Christmas Day!) I thought, ‘This is a sign from the universe that, Maria you don’t get to plan your life and it doesn’t go accordingly1" (7:25) The Importance of Outsourcing & Delegation Having three kids was a complete game changer for Maria and her family - one she describes as sending her into complete overwhelm. “I just said things have to change, I cannot do it all. I need to delegate and outsource things.” (8:13) And so, she did just that! They hired help both inside the home and in her business, which she says has made a world of difference, though it was difficult for her to let things go at first. On Kicking Mom Guilt to the Curb Our discussion took a great turn as we explored the differences between moms and dads, and how moms often seem more inclined to feel guilty about things that don't tend to ultimately matter as much. I share how the "put-together" moms at daycare made me feel especially un-put-together until I realized the freedom that I have because I don't have to show up to a job and instead get to spend the morning playing with my kids. Maria on the other hand, is one of those moms who is put together first thing in the morning - because it's important to her! And also her only real chance during the day to make sure getting ready happens. It's all about figuring out what matters and what works for you. “We are so quick to compare ourselves to other people without knowing the whole story, and that’s hard. I wish we didn’t put that on ourselves.” (12:43) Building a Business as an Author After Maria's first book was released in 2008 she was asked to do a few speaking engagements, which she quickly realized she loved. She then decided to spend time building her speaking career to allow her the time and space to write more books. “I felt like every additional book added credibility to my speaking platform.” (13:48) Another big point she shared is that marketing is a really key component to building a business as an author. “A huge part, about 75%, of what I do is marketing in a non-sales and very authentic way trying to get my messages out there so that people do want to hear me speak and do want to bring my books into their homes.” (14:57) We discuss the ramifications of publishing traditionally (which she did with her first book) versus self-publishing (which she does now, for both herself and other authors through her publishing house Cardinal Rule Press). She shares that in addition to writing and speaking, she began consulting for other aspiring authors, but she didn't completely love the process of consulting, so creating a course to impart her knowledge instead. “I want to educate other published authors on how they can use their platform to market their messages.” (16:23) And - Maria is a BIG believer in anyone being able to write the stories that matter to them. She says she often has people suggest book topics to her, but believes that any person who has a story in mind should be the one to write it themselves! “When you have the personal experience and the passion for that topic that will drive your business and that will make you all the more successful because you have passion behind the idea.” (24:06) On Dealing with Overwhelm Towards the end of our conversation we dig deep into the realities of being a boss mom and discuss what Maria does to deal with the inevitable overwhelm we all experience at times. She shares that exercise, meal planning, making lists and putting everything into ONE calendar are what keep life afloat for her, and she's really had to figure out what tools work well. We compare different organization tools like Asana, Trello and Bootcamp and how different platforms work better for different people, so it's important to figure out which is best for YOU. “Don’t give up! If one doesn’t work, try a different one.” (30:22) Referenced in the Show: Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun New Book: The Jelly Donut Difference Cardinal Rule Press Publishing Services & Courses Createspace Asana Trello Eating Clean, Cooking Dirty Find Maria on Instagram (Just FYI, some of these links may be affiliate links, which means if you make a purchase using the links I may receive some love in return!) When Maria said that she would rather died than submit, Alexander began stabbing her with a knife. As she lay in the hospital, she forgave Alexander before she died. Her death didn't end her forgivness, however. Alexander was captured and sentenced to thirty years. He was unrepentant until he had a dream that he was in a garden.
