Today, I am blessed to have Kristin Johnson & Maria Claps here with me. Their personal and clinical experiences have taught them that midlife is a pivotal time in a woman's life, often accompanied by unique challenges. They recognized a gap in specialized care for women over 40 and have made it their mission to fill it. While there's an abundance of health advice for women in their teens, 20s, and 30s, the messaging becomes unclear as women enter their 40s. Kristin and Maria believe that generalized health information isn't sufficient—and in some cases, can even be harmful—for midlife women. Their goal is to empower women over 40 to take control of their health, ensuring that the next chapter of their lives is their best yet. Kristin and Maria emphasize that menopause is far more than just the loss of fertility and menstruation. They argue that menopause signifies a deeper metabolic change in the body that affects over 4,000 physiological processes, not just the commonly known symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings. Even women without symptoms are impacted by hormonal shifts and need to address them proactively. Their work offers a comprehensive deep dive into hormone replacement therapy (HRT), debunking myths and urging women to take control of their health during this life stage. They advocate for personalized, multi-faceted health approaches rather than one-size-fits-all solutions, emphasizing the importance of understanding hormonal changes. Kristin and Maria emphasize that many women are harming their bodies through excessive cardio, under-eating, and stress, perpetuating a cycle of catabolic damage. They highlight the importance of nourishment, stress management, sleep, and strength training for maintaining health, particularly as hormone levels decline with age. While optimizing hormones can help, it's not a standalone solution; addressing the underlying stress is crucial for hormonal balance. They also discuss the need for a tailored approach to hormone therapy to not only alleviate symptoms but also reduce chronic disease risks, challenging the limited, symptom-focused perspective of mainstream menopause treatment. Tune in as Maria and Kristin emphasize that progesterone plays a significant role in women's health; its effectiveness is tied to the presence of progesterone receptors, which fluctuate throughout the ovarian cycle and are mainly influenced by estradiol levels. They caution against relying solely on progesterone hormone replacement therapy, especially in perimenopausal women, where estrogen decline reduces the number of receptors, leading to symptoms like anxiety and mood dysregulation. They advocate for a more holistic approach, managing stress, balancing hormones, and incorporating oxytocin to ensure well-being and metabolic freedom. They are plainspoken friends and practitioners who share a passion for women's health- especially women's health at midlife.  Maria was one of the very first guests on the podcast, in Episode 12, back in 2018!  In this episode, we dive into Kristin and Maria's backgrounds and talk about the work they are doing to empower women in perimenopause and beyond and change the cultural narrative around aging for women, secrecy, and shame. We get into some of the changes that occur in middle age, including changes in metabolic homeostasis in our metabolism, muscle, immune function, and brain health. We discuss the need for changes in nutrition, strength training, and Zone 2 training, the role of HRT, common mistakes that get made in navigating HRT and supplementation, and the importance of testing.  I hope you will enjoy listening to our empowering discussion as much as I did recording it! IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN Kristin and Maria share the experiences that led them to find their calling. Why the traditional narrative around aging for women has to change. Changes that occur in women's bodies in their late thirties and early forties as a result of changes in the metabolic homeostasis in their metabolism. Why over-exercising and over-restricting can make things worse for women in their late thirties and early forties. The importance of prioritizing and optimizing sleep, and eating enough in perimenopause- especially protein. How women in their late thirties and early forties benefit from a keto diet. The importance of finding and consuming the foods that work best for our bodies. The importance and benefits of strength training for women. The benefits of scheduling Zone 2 cardio workout sessions twice a week for women. The role of hormone replacement therapy. The benefits of a moderate amount of testosterone. When menopause comes around, most of us least expect it - that's because it creeps up from what we feel is an early age. A problem is that many women aren't prepared for this new chapter and transition. Your doctor might tell you it's time for HRT and move you along with a prescription. So you can see why midlife women are chronically uneducated, undersupported and totally unheard in our so-called “developed” society. We can feel like nothing's REALLY working; this is our dealt hand, and that's how life is. Kristin and Maria are my guests today and are functional health practitioners who specialise in menopause health & lifestyle education. Founders of the incredibly successful resource on women's midlife health, Wise and Well, we're lucky to be blessed with BOTH of them and their abundance of knowledge and wisdom! Together, they've flipped the landscape of women's midlife health, educating and supporting women via hormonal and entire life transformations. Few people discuss what happens to your hormones after menopause. In fact, there seems to be a lot of secrecy among women in this stage of life about their hormonal health. That's why I'm so excited to have Maria Claps with me today to shed light on this important topic.   About Maria Claps Maria Claps is a certified health coach, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition practitioner, and mom to four grown boys. After receiving inadequate healthcare that did nothing to address her perimenopause problems, Maria enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) in order to help herself. After that, Maria pursued several hormone-centric trainings including Dr. Sara Gottfried's practitioner hormone training program, and the Functional Diagnostic Nutrition program, and she also has been mentored by hormone scholar and scientist Dr. Lindsey Berkson. Maria helps women all over the world as a perimenopause and menopause mentor. She is a DUTCH hormone test expert. She also teaches practitioners how to help midlife women thrive in a mentorship program called Midlife Hormone Mastery. When she's not working with clients, Maria can be found trekking through Italy, at farmers' markets locally, or in the kitchen creating recipes.   Hormonal Changes Don't Mean the End of Your Lifestyle Throughout this conversation, Maria shares how her experience sent her on a quest to better understand the signs and symptoms of perimenopause. Insomnia, weight gain, and unstable moods led her to solutions that few others in the health field were discussing.  Over the years, Maria discovered the truth that lies behind many common menopause myths. In reality, you don't have to accept all the changes. Maria explains that hormonal changes are not necessarily the same thing as aging. By recognizing that the way you feel now is a symptom, not the root of the problem, you can take informed actions. Much of the way people think of menopause is very negative. Maria explains how cultural expectations of older women derive from a false narrative. Sadly, this has led to a culture of silence around the topic. Maria works to help women open up about their experiences. When this happens, women can take action and regain control over their lives.   Understanding Your Hormones Before, During, and After Menopause Maria stresses that living a healthy lifestyle will help ease your transition to perimenopause, menopause, and beyond. Diet and nutrition, as well as exercise, go a long way. That being said, there is no guarantee that it will still go smoothly. Many of Maria's clients do this and still struggle.  It can be scary to experience these changes in your body. There is a sense of loss of control when you don't fully understand how these changes affect you. That's why Maria stresses the role of education. When you understand your body well, you know what is normal, what isn't, and what you can do about it.  Hormone testing, particularly the DUTCH Test, is a major tool Maria employs. It gives a complete picture of what the hormones are doing and how they are changing. Maria has seen the value of these tests to highlight potential problems and establish healthy regimens for her clients. What can you start doing today to prepare for menopause? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!   In This Episode How to recognize the signs of perimenopause [8:30] Common myths about menopause [11:45] Changing the cultural narrative of aging and menopause [16:40] What to expect from an optimal menopause experience [21:45] The connection between the premenopausal experience and menopause itself [27:35] The critical link between mindset and menopause [33:15] The value of comprehensive hormone testing for post-menopausal women [36:45] Practical tips you can start using today to reduce menopause symptoms [48:50]   Quotes “As far as becoming this overweight asexual woman who isolates herself and can't contribute to the world anymore, that's completely false.” [12:39] “You are going to have some changes. So, let's do this… as any respectable Iowa girl would do it, Letterman style. The 10th Top Flipping 50 Podcast for Menopause Health & Fitness is…. (Cue drumroll) #10 When Your Menopause Calorie Deficit Backfires   https://www.flippingfifty.com/menopause-calorie-deficit-454/ Eat less, exercise more, so goes the dogma. It's wrong. Dead wrong. Are you eating enough for your fitness to stand a chance getting the rewards you want? #9 Are You Strong Enough? If the Unthinkable Happens   https://www.flippingfifty.com/strong-enough/ This is an interview episode with Pam who was a part time group fitness instructor for 2 decades when an accident tested how truly fit she was and changed the value of her health. #8 Total Body or Split Routine Strength Training in Menopause   https://www.flippingfifty.com/total-body-workouts/ I'm both glad and a bit alarmed about this one making the top 10 podcasts for menopause health & fitness list this year. Glad because this rumor and strategy is potentially limiting progress, keeping you exhausted, and ignoring science. Alarmed because it tells me that a lot of fitness professionals – or at least fitness marketers – are suggesting you work out as a body builder or figure competitor in midlife which has a strong potential to wreak havoc with your hormones. Bottom line, is it is always about evidence of monitoring your body fat and muscle, your sleep, stress, belly fat, and energy levels just to name a few, that should determine if it's working for you. #7 Where to Start Exercise | Ask the Menopause Fitness Expert   https://www.flippingfifty.com/?s=Where+to+start+exercise By the way if you're listening to the Top 10 Menopause Podcasts for Health & Fitness at the end of 2021 or beginning of 2022, I have a couple resources for you. First, it's my annual tradition to do a Planning session with you Live on Facebook between Christmas and New Years. There's a Virtual Retreat happening January 8th you can still get in on until it closes on the 5th. And STRONGER – my 12-week strength program and the CAFÉ Flipping50 membership are open for limited time. Links in the show notes flippingfifty.com/menopause-podcasts So there's something for everyone, if you just want FREE, you know you need support and this feels like a good fit.. or you're just saying YES to yourself and jumping into the membership while we're open. #6 How to Time Protein for Optimal Muscle & Recovery   https://www.flippingfifty.com/protein-for-optimal-muscle-455/ Any talk about protein and muscle or fat is a hot topic for us here. So, this detailed podcast will explain the importance not just of what, but of when you eat. Distributing protein correctly around your workout and throughout the day is far more beneficial than allowing an app to tell you that you hit a number at the end of the day. Learn more about your midlife energy needs in this podcast. The 5th Top Flipping 50 Podcast for Menopause Health & Fitness is… (drumroll, please) #5 What's at the Core of Your Menopause Belly Woes?  https://www.flippingfifty.com/menopause-belly/ Is it fat? Is it bloat? Is it lack of muscle tone? If it's fat, from where? If it's bloat, from where? #4 Total Body Workouts vs Total Body Exercises https://www.flippingfifty.com/total-body-workouts/ Based on your goals Based on your hormone, joint, ligament status and health history I look at menopause as a sport. Here's how to train. #3 7 Secrets to More Muscle in Menopause https://www.flippingfifty.com/muscle-in-menopause-2/ If you can lift heavy, you should. But what if you can't? How to reach fatigue and be successful when you can't go heavy is what this episode is all about. #2 Blunt Fitness Facts as We Age | Real Talk Interview   https://www.flippingfifty.com/fitness-facts-as-we-age/ In this interview episode, I chat with Susan Niebergall who enjoyed a career as a school counselor and then became interested in fitness. As so many others do, she first solved her own challenge with midlife. She's a straight talker, and we openly tackle myths and mindset crazy-ness that infects midlife women. #1 Plant vs Animal Protein for Midlife Women | Ask the Experts   https://www.flippingfifty.com/plant-vs-animal-protein/ Protein, really any food-flavored conversation, is a popular topic among women in midlife. So it's no wonder that this one hit the top #1 podcast for 2021. Another interview episode this one with the team at Wise & Well. Maria Claps and Kristen ___________ and I break down the reason behind advocating for animal protein for hormone support. It may ruffle your feathers, it may confirm what you thought or your body was telling you, but either way I think you'll be glad you listened. BONUS: The Menopausal Woman Interview with Dr Christiane Northrup   https://www.flippingfifty.com/menopausal-body/ Putting this episode that's been out for less than 7 days up against episodes that have run for more than 11 months is a little unfair. I know from the early comments across our social media sites that this episode is on its way to being a top 10 podcasts for menopause health & fitness. And … My Personal Favorite… Episode #500 How I'm Dealing with Grief and Beyond https://www.flippingfifty.com/coping-with-grief/

If You Want To Heal Your Hormones and Lose Stubborn Weight, You Should: Use your fork to make diet decisions every day that help your hormones and improve metabolic flexibility  Empower yourself with the knowledge needed to stop outsourcing your hormone health Embrace an adapted version of the ketogenic diet that is personalized to you and your body's needs   When it comes to the women I work with, the number one concern as we get older tends to be that stubborn weight gain that we just can't seem to get rid of. But have you ever considered that this weight could be directly related to your hormones and metabolic flexibility? By understanding how your hormones affect your metabolism, you can adopt a diet and lifestyle that suits you and helps you get rid of the stubborn weight gain for good.   Transform Your Health Dr. Sara Gottfried is a board-certified physician who graduated from Harvard and MIT. She practices evidence-based integrative, precision, and functional medicine. She has authored multiple books, including the breakthrough and instant NYT bestseller Women, Food, and Hormones. She has dedicated herself to helping women unlock their ability to fix their metabolism, heal their hormones, and lose stubborn fat for good.   Adapt the Ketogenic Diet for Your Unique Body Have you ever had a male coworker or friend experience massive success with a keto diet but have not seen those results yourself? This is because men and women have a different genetic makeup that can lead to hormone disruption when going on an elimination diet. These gender differences inspired Dr. Sara to start her research and why she created an adapted version of the ketogenic diet for women. Dr. Sara has literally discovered the key to unlocking our ability to lose stubborn weight, and it all comes down to metabolic flexibility and our hormones.   Taking Back Control of Your Hormones So often, women are gaslit or faced with a double standard when it comes to traditional medicine. But the truth is the power to take back control of your hormones and get your body working for you instead of against you exists within yourself.  While it may seem daunting to think you have to do it yourself, nobody knows your body better than you. By improving your metabolic flexibility, you can ensure that you have a fully functioning body for years to come. Through Dr. Sara's new book, you can transform your health, lose stubborn weight, and address your symptoms before it is too late. Are you ready to find a personalized way to balance your hormones, improve your metabolic flexibility, and take back control of your health? Share what you are most looking forward to in Dr. Sara's new book with me in the comments section of the episode page.   Quotes: “We have been taught ‘eat less exercise more,' but it turns out that is not necessarily true. Your calories matter, but your hormones matter more.” (11:05) “I don't want to be average, I want to be optimal. And I want that for our listeners and viewers, to really think about what is normal in terms of mainstream medicine, versus what is optimal.” (21:08) “The most effective way to deal with insulin resistance is with your fork. But I can tell you since I went through conventional medical training, is we are not taught how to do that! So even though it is the most effective way to reverse pre-diabetes, the most effective way to help you with insulin resistance, the most effective way to deal with type 2 diabetes, we are not taught how to counsel people on that.”  (41:10) “If you are struggling with your weight, if you are struggling with your metabolism, this is a real and valid concern. Don't let some doctor dismiss you or say you are just getting older, and it's how things are. No! Let's figure out how to support you, get you the food that really helps you with your hormones and helps you regulate your insulin and all these other hormones that we have been talking about today. Because the power really is within your reach.” (46:54) “The time to do something about it is not when you are 72 and diagnosed, it's right now!” (50:37)   In This Episode The inspiration for the new book, Women, Food, and Hormones by Dr. Sara Gottfried (7:18) How to improve your metabolic flexibility as you pivot into your 30's, 40's, and beyond (16:14) Tips for reversing insulin resistance and pre-diabetes through food (28:28) Why pregnancy can influence your risk of cardiometabolic disease (39:33) How to feel more empowered when it comes to taking back control of your hormones (46:30)   Resources Mentioned: Food, Women, and Hormones by Dr. Sara Gottfried Dr. Sara Gottfried Website Follow Dr. Sara on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | TikTok   Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes:  Essentially You Episode #192: How to Makeover Your Metabolism for Long-Term Success with Mark Sisson Essentially You Episode #268: The Number One Hormone Imbalance Connected to Stubborn Weight Gain Essentially You  Episode #285: The Lowdown on Declining Hormones and How They Impact Weight, Mood, and Sleep with Maria Claps and Kristin Johnson

Unfortunately, Maria was not getting the answers that she was seeking from her doctor. The doctor wanted to put Maria on hormone therapy right away. For sleep issues, the doctor prescribed clonazepam. Overall, Maria's doctor didn't get to the causes of why she was experiencing certain symptoms. For Kristin, she had hormone issues her entire life. The solution from doctors was always a birth control pill. However, Kristin didn't know enough to understand that this was hormonal dysfunction. In Kristin's thirties, she started to battle her weight, libido, and skin. Kristin's doctor told her that nothing was wrong with her. Sadly, Kristin's doctor would not check her hormones. Eventually, Kristin pursued a nutrition program and became board-certified. She started a journey on changing her food, hormones, and lifestyle. [09:25] How Making Lifestyle Changes Can Health Your Body Less is more when it comes to training. You may be overtraining. When you reduce your training, your weight may start to melt off. Sleep is a massive piece of your lifestyle. If you haven't already, it's time to get serious about your sleep patterns. Also, nourish your body and get monthly massages – it will make all the difference. [12:45] Making A Smooth Transition To Perimenopause When progesterone declines, it is never coming back. Menopause is a full 12 months without a period. The closer you get to menopause, there will be a lot of symptoms because your hormones are in flux. Some women, even with good adrenal health, are going to suffer. If you have low estrogen and low testosterone, you are fighting an uphill battle. [16:20] Practical Steps You Can Take Before Hitting Perimenopause First, dial in your nutrition. Women need to put down the smoothie and start eating bacon, eggs, and steak. Next, address adrenal health. It's time to learn how to live with your stress. In your thirties and forties, taking care of YOU is really important. Salt baths, massages, and wine will be essential self-care pieces. If you don't want to hit a brick wall in your late forties, then you need to deal with your self-care routine now. [23:35] Oatmeal: Why It May Not Be As Healthy As You Think Women don't understand satiety. They mistake nutritional choices that fill them up as satiety. Someone has oatmeal at 9 am, then they are snacking again at 11 am. A nourishing meal should not be made out of kindling. A meal should be something that will satisfy you for four or five hours. Your first meal of the day should be protein-heavy. Most of the time, oatmeal is a dessert. Plus, women will feel full because they are bloated from eating oatmeal. [27:30] The Importance of Eating Animal Protein vs. Plant-Based Protein There is a massive difference between animal protein and plant protein. Primarily, the most significant difference is the carbohydrate load. Meat will be mostly fat and protein. Whereas plant-based protein will be high in carbs. Another difference is the amino acid quality. A lot of people eating a plant-based diet are also on anti-anxiety medications. Why are girls in their twenties and thirties on more medications than people in their fifties? [32:55] Strong Stomach Acid Is One of Your Best Anti-Aging Tools As we get older, we become more nutrient deficient. If you don't have stomach acid, you aren't going to get the iron from meat. A lot of Maria and Kristin's clients are on hormone replacement therapy. However, if they don't have strong stomach acid, they won't benefit from their supplements. Stomach acid is going to sanitize anything that we eat. [39:55] Why The DUTCH Test Is The Best Diagnostic Tool In Functional Medicine Maria loves the DUTCH test because of estrogen metabolism. We want to see that the body is behaving with estrogen. Urine is the only way you will see estrogen metabolism. If you don't have good estrogen metabolism, there are certain lifestyle tweaks you can make. Also, Maria loves the DUTCH test because it is extremely empowering to women. Kristin loves the adrenal piece. Too many women normalize what they are living with. Learn more about DUTCH testing: https://dutchtest.com/ AND MUCH MORE! If You Want To Understand Your Hormones Better, You Should: Adapt your nutrition to include more animal protein and strength training to improve your metabolic health Acknowledge, embrace and make room for your stress Create routines and habits that enforce healthy behavior and promote longevity   Here is some real talk you may not want to hear: your protective hormones decline with age, no matter how ‘clean' your lifestyle is. The good news is that if you equip yourself with the knowledge necessary to pivot with those fluctuations, you can become an up-leveled version of yourself after this big hormone transition instead of declining too.   Passionate About Women's Health Mid-Life Maria, an FDN practitioner, and Kristin, a Board-certified nutritionist, are plainspoken friends and practitioners who share a passion for women's health, especially women's health at midlife. As both are themselves menopausal, they've refined the art and science of thriving as a midlife woman based on both clinical and personal experience. They combine individualized nutrition and lifestyle changes tailored to midlife women's needs with mindset coaching, lab testing, and hormone replacement therapy education to help women thrive so that they can stop or prevent their health from spinning out of control.   Understanding Your Options The key to handling your declining hormones is to understand what your options are. You do not have to suffer in silence, and this can be the best part of your life if you prep your body in the right way. Lifestyle, stress, sleep, and modern life all impact whether your experience with perimenopause and menopause will be really quiet or really loud.  Maria and Kristin aren't here to tell you the conventional things you are going to hear from your doctor or OBGYN; they are here for real talk, real wisdom, and real recommendations to help you pivot along with your changing hormones.   Deciding That You Matter As women, we want to take care of everyone else, which often leaves us on the backburner. In reality, if you don't take care of yourself, all bets are off for everyone else you are taking care of. By finding habits and routines that add to your longevity and performance, you can inspire the people around you by deciding that you matter and taking action towards that. Perimenopause and menopause are unique experiences that impact everything in your life. By empowering yourself with the knowledge of non-negotiables that you need for your individual body, you can set yourself and your body up for success. Are you ready to take the journey of perimenopause and menopause back into your own hands? Share which of Maria and Kristin's tips you are going to try out first with me in the comments section of the episode page.   Quotes: “It's profound the changes that we can make. We have so many levers at our disposable before we want medical intervention. There is no reason for women to have to suffer through these 10-12 years that they do.” (10:54) “I was fully menopausal at 47. If I live to my 90's, I will half lived half of my life post-menopausally!” (20:02) “It's accessible, it's not that hard, it's just taking the steps.” (31:17) “It's defining it, embracing it, acknowledging it, and figuring out a way to live with it. There are tools for that. It's not pretending to the world on your Instagram account that you've got this nailed. That's stressful.” (39:41) “Regardless of your choices, figure out what your options are. Get educated, be an advocate for yourself, and make those choices from that confident place of ‘this is what I want for myself, and this is what I can handle'. It doesn't take wealth, it takes knowledge.” (46:37)   In This Episode How your hormones change throughout the four major hormone transitions in your life (13:20) Discover the defining moment of menopause and what menopause really is (19:06) The foundational steps you need to take to pivot with your bodies changes (21:47) Approaches that you can take to handle your stress while you take care of your family, career, and yourself (32:53) Tips for redefining what your menopause journey looks like going forward (40:15)   Resources Mentioned: The Essential Oils Menopause Solution Mastering Midlife Mayhem Wise and Well Website Follow Kristin + Maria on Instagram   Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes:  Essentially You Episode #279: The Secret to Gliding Not Slamming Into Perimenopause and Beyond with Dr. Lakeischa, MD Essentially You Episode #269: Owning the Wisdom of Menopause with Dr. Christine Northrup, MD

Few people discuss what happens to your hormones after menopause. In fact, there seems to be a lot of secrecy among women in this stage of life about their hormonal health. That’s why I’m so excited to have Maria Claps with me today to shed light on this important topic.   About Maria Claps Maria Claps is a certified health coach, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, and mom to four grown boys. After receiving inadequate healthcare that did nothing to address her perimenopause problems, Maria enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) in order to get the help she sought. After that, Maria pursued several hormone-centric training including Dr. Sara Gottfried's practitioner hormone training program, the Functional Diagnostic Nutrition program. Her mentors include hormone scholar and scientist Dr. Lindsey Berkson. Maria helps women all over the world as a perimenopause and menopause mentor. She is a DUTCH hormone test expert. She also teaches practitioners how to help midlife women thrive in her mentorship program Midlife Hormone Mastery. When she’s not working with clients, Maria can be found trekking through Italy, at farmers’ markets locally, or in the kitchen creating recipes.   Hormonal Changes Don’t Mean the End of Your Lifestyle Maria shares how her experience sent her on a quest to better understand the signs and symptoms of perimenopause. Insomnia, weight gain, and unstable moods led her to solutions that few others in the health field were discussing.  Over the years, Maria has discovered the truth that lies behind many common menopause myths. In reality, you don’t have to accept all the changes. Maria stresses that living a healthy lifestyle will help ease your transition through perimenopause, menopause, and beyond. Diet and nutrition, as well as exercise, go a long way. That being said, there is no guarantee that it will still go smoothly. Many of Maria’s clients do this and still struggle.  It can be scary to experience these changes in your body. There is a sense of loss of control when you don’t fully understand how these changes affect you. That’s why Maria stresses the role of education. When you understand your body well, you know what is normal, what isn’t, and what you can do about it.   Understanding Your Hormones Before, During, and After Menopause Hormone testing, particularly the DUTCH Test, is a major tool Maria employs. Claudia Petrilli is a functional health coach who works with busy women to balance their hormones naturally, so they can improve their monthly cycle, energy & mood. She struggled with her own health as far back as she can remember, including digestive issues, irregular and painful periods, headaches, insomnia, depression, and a pituitary disorder. After years of not getting answers from her doctors, she decided to take control of her health by adopting a holistic approach, changing her food and lifestyle habits. The majority of her symptoms improved and she realized how passionate she was about teaching other women who were struggling as well. She received her training through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Institute for Functional Health Coaching, a mentorship with Women’s Hormone Expert, Maria Claps, and continues her education to stay up-to-date on all things hormone related. Through comprehensive hormone and stool testing, she creates a customized protocol to help women make healthier swaps to their food, lifestyle, and mindset (while still being able to indulge!), so they can feel and look their best. Claudia works with clients privately, as well as in her membership, the Healthy Hormones Hub, and in her upcoming group coaching program, The Hormone Rescue. What is the impact of estrogen dominance on women over 40? What happens when you transition from estrogen dominance to estrogen absence? Certified health coach Maria Claps shares her expertise and knowledge about this subject to give us an episode that’s packed with valuable information. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode103 Topics Discussed in this Episode: Estrogen dominance and how it changes in women as they age What happens when your estrogen starts to drop off The different symptoms and problems that can arise with low estrogen The best way to make the transition from estrogen dominance to estrogen absence Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and when you should consider it The DUTCH test Bioidentical hormones vs synthetic hormones Key Takeaways: Estrogen dominance is when your estrogen is out of balance with your progesterone. It essentially tends to be a progesterone deficiency. Women can go from estrogen dominance to estrogen absence at some point in their 40s and they don’t always know when that shift has occurred. You need a good, robust amount of estrogen at about the 12th day of your cycle in order to ovulate, and when you ovulate, you get progesterone. When your estrogen lowers, you can experience symptoms like vaginal dryness, but flashes, and mood issues. Action Steps: Learn more about bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Cut down your carbohydrates. Exercise according to your adrenal capacity. Maria Claps: “Your sex hormones in balance will make for much easier weight loss.” “My number one tip for women that are in that menopausal transition is to stop eating so many carbohydrates… You simply do not have the metabolic bandwidth, with age, to be eating copious amounts of carbohydrates.” Thanks for listening!   Important Announcements:The Metabolic Reset program is now ON SALE! For so long, it seemed like there was just this time of life women would suddenly hit – menopause – and everything went dark. There was really nothing you could do about it. What a disservice to women! Not only is it not-as-simple as just hitting menopause (a little thing called perimenopause lasts much longer than menopause for many women), it’s also a lie that there’s nothing we can do to ease the transition. Plus, hitting menopause doesn’t mean your life has to be over – you can be just as a vital post-menopause as you are pre-menopause if you know the steps to take care of your body. In this interview with Maria Claps, we cover it all: What perimenopause is all about How you know when you are transitioning into menopause How certain foods and supplements can change the whole game The biggest factor that impacts hormones, and What the real deal is with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). If you are over 40, you don’t want to miss this episode! Maria Claps is a certified health coach, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition practitioner and mom to 4 grown boys. After receiving inadequate healthcare that did nothing to address her perimenopause problems, Maria enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) in order to help herself. After that, Maria pursued several hormone-centric trainings including Dr. Sara Gottfried’s practitioner hormone training program, the Functional Diagnostic Nutrition program and she also has been mentored by hormone scholar and scientist Dr. Lindsey Berkson. Maria helps women all over the world as a perimenopause and menopause mentor via her Thrive Over 45 program. She is a DUTCH hormone test expert. Are you worried about going through menopause? How can we go through this transition period in life with more ease, more grace, and more flow? Find out the lifestyle strategies that we can take with a certified health coach and functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner Maria Claps. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode43 Topics Discussed in this Episode: Why our hormones decline after age 35 What we can do about the weight gain that comes on during menopause as well as all the menopausal symptoms that show up How we can thrive in menopause How exercise, adrenal health, liver detox and a nutrient-dense diet play really important roles in menopause Bioidentical hormone intervention How inflammation plays a role in menopause Key Takeaways: Perimenopause is the time that precedes menopause, and it’s different for every woman. There is no technical, medical description or even diagnosis for it, but it’s the time when women experience shifting periods. If your period starts coming regularly close together, like 21 days or less, that’s a cause for concern. You definitely need to visit your gynecologist just to rule out endometrial buildup at that point. Once your progesterone level drops, it’s never coming back. Menopause in and of itself is a state of chronic, low-level inflammation, and women can correct that with hormone therapy. For women who are drinking more than two glasses of wine a night, it increases their estrogen by 250%. Women in menopause need to get comfortable with lifting weights and with things like Pilates. Action Steps: Take your 40s seriously and make sure that you’re eating nutrient-dense food. Learn to get in touch with your own body and have some type of stress-relieving practice. You can’t live without cortisol, but make sure that it’s not too high or too low. Respect your body’s rhythms. Get some sun in the morning. Get adequate sleep. Eat nutrient-dense food. Don’t eat the same foods over and over again. Have an educated discussion with your physician about using birth control pills. Take the DUTCH Test. Support your immune system. Exercise and reduce your toxic load. Support your bile production. Find non-food ways to socialize and give yourself a boost. If you absolutely can’t get rid of your perfume, at least don’t spray it on your neck, spray it on your clothes instead.   Maria said: “Hormones don’t work if you’re eating bad food and you’re drinking way too much alcohol and you’re not sleeping, don’t bother doing hormones. It’s a whole package.” “Hormones don’t exist in a vacuum. They go into receptors… And if those receptors need nutrients and if you don’t have those nutrients and you have just a buildup of toxins in the body, then your hormones are not going to be able to appropriately connect with the receptors.”   Thanks for listening! This episode started out being a follow-up to Episode 25 on perimenopause, but we ended up covering so much ground that we decided to rename it and just call it what it is: a total geek-out on women's hormones.   In Episode 30, Brodie talks with Maria Claps, a certified health coach, mother of 4 grown children, and women's healthy aging advocate, about perimenopause, menopause, women's hormones, and so much more. As we discussed in E25, perimenopause can be a tumultuous time in the world of hormones, leading to side-effects like anxiety, depression, insomnia, and hot flashes. Learning how to test for, understand, and effectively balance our hormones can makes the process seem far less daunting.   In this episode, we explore: Perimenopause and menopause Hormones and how they change Eating our veggies Supplements that can help ease symptoms and balance hormones Talking to physicians and making them hear you The Dutch Test Maria Claps is a certified health coach, mother of 4 grown children, and women's healthy aging advocate. After receiving sub-standard care in NYC, Maria enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) in pursuit of a solution for her perimenopausal symptoms that began when she turned 40. Inspired by her training at IIN, Maria pursued 3 additional hormone-centric trainings: Dr. Sara Gottfried's training program for practitioners; The Functional Diagnostic Nutrition program; and The UK-based 3rd Age Woman Certification program with Burrell Education. When she's not facilitating her online community, Maria keeps current in her knowledge of functional health by attending Datis Kharazzian seminars on topics like thyroid, blood chemistry, and brain health. She also enjoys reading, recipe creation, and finding new things to eat at farmers markets.   Resources: Maria's Website, www.nourishandflourishhealth.com Maria's Hormone Balancing Guide
