When I first started this show, almost 13 years ago, I bought a cheap little video camera and interviewed Nan at her house because she's pretty much my favorite person in the universe. As many of you know, Nan's wisdom is ever present in our work, and especially my book, The Wild Diet. But who is Nan anyway? Well, Marion Bascom, affectionately known as Nan was a nurse, a Second Lieutenant in the US Army, and a city girl who married my grandfather, Horace, a dairy farmer, and took on the challenges of tending to a dairy farm, organic garden and homestead while raising 7 children. After living the good life for almost a century, Nan passed away a few years ago at the age of 97. And I'm very happy to be able to share some of her wisdom with you here today. We could all benefit from listening to a few words from the elders these days. This interview is very dear to my heart, and I hope this show with Nan brings a smile to your face and warms your heart, too. Get ready to smile. Social media is so superficial that it's challenging to post anything meaningful.  Instead, we should be falling in love with the right kind of media. Social media is making people anxious and bummed out.  [16:10] If You Want To Grow A Brand, You Need To Have A Podcast  If you want to create content for the rest of your life, start a podcast.  The problem with podcasting is oversaturation. Eventually, there will be more podcasts than there are listeners.  A podcast is something that you own. Whereas your TikTok channel isn't something that you own. This will be critical as we look toward the future of the decentralization of media. [19:45] How You Can Apply Keto Flexing To Your Life  Many people think that going hard is better. However, it's all about finding balance.  If you want to build muscle, then insulin is not your enemy, and neither is glucose. Whether you like it or not, you'll go back to eating carbs for one reason or another.  Being able to store carbs on the shelf is really important. You need to learn how to use and store all the different macronutrients, including carbs.  Remember, you can't eat 350 grams of processed carbs a day and expect to see results.  [27:00] Why Abel Loves Intermittent Fasting and How It Helps With Mental Strength  Abel loves how simple fasting is.  Fasting can mentally and spiritually build strength.  There are many ways to approach fasting. Abel got into fasting by pushing breakfast until later in the day.  We are taught that the more you eat, the more strength you build. Your eating can result in massive deficiencies or a relative abundance of multiple nutrients.  You can approach health in a way that is creative and fun.  Feasting is a way to nourish your body in a nutrient-dense way.  Try and make feasting as enjoyable and as high-quality as you possibly can.  [37:45] Waking Up In The Morning Is A Special Time To Reframe Your Thinking  Waking up in the morning is a sacred time. You should protect the brain state right after you wake up.  When Abel wakes up in the morning, he practices some self-defense against technology. Give yourself as much time before you jump on your phone, social media, or the news.  Write down your dreams when you wake up. Social media is so superficial that it's challenging to post anything meaningful.  Instead, we should be falling in love with the right kind of media. Social media is making people anxious and bummed out.  [16:10] If You Want To Grow A Brand, You Need To Have A Podcast  If you want to create content for the rest of your life, start a podcast.  The problem with podcasting is oversaturation. Eventually, there will be more podcasts than there are listeners.  A podcast is something that you own. Whereas your TikTok channel isn't something that you own. This will be critical as we look toward the future of the decentralization of media. [19:45] How You Can Apply Keto Flexing To Your Life  Many people think that going hard is better. However, it's all about finding balance.  If you want to build muscle, then insulin is not your enemy, and neither is glucose. Whether you like it or not, you'll go back to eating carbs for one reason or another.  Being able to store carbs on the shelf is really important. You need to learn how to use and store all the different macronutrients, including carbs.  Remember, you can't eat 350 grams of processed carbs a day and expect to see results.  [27:00] Why Abel Loves Intermittent Fasting and How It Helps With Mental Strength  Abel loves how simple fasting is.  Fasting can mentally and spiritually build strength.  There are many ways to approach fasting. Abel got into fasting by pushing breakfast until later in the day.  We are taught that the more you eat, the more strength you build. Your eating can result in massive deficiencies or a relative abundance of multiple nutrients.  You can approach health in a way that is creative and fun.  Feasting is a way to nourish your body in a nutrient-dense way.  Try and make feasting as enjoyable and as high-quality as you possibly can.  [37:45] Waking Up In The Morning Is A Special Time To Reframe Your Thinking  Waking up in the morning is a sacred time. You should protect the brain state right after you wake up.  When Abel wakes up in the morning, he practices some self-defense against technology. Give yourself as much time before you jump on your phone, social media, or the news.  Write down your dreams when you wake up. But who is Nan, anyway? Fat is Not the Enemy (it's actually a friend) One of the common misconceptions in the health and fitness industry is that fat is somehow unhealthy. It is processed fats that are unhealthy. Due to the over processing of our foods, the increase in chemicals and  the wide spread use of growth hormones, many of fats we receive from red meat and other previously organic sources are now basically just a slab of toxins. However, eating organic, grass fed beef and other healthy fats such as avocado, coconut oil, and has actually been shown to help lower bad cholesterol, boost testosterone, and enhance cognitive function. Long story short; get more healthy and natural fats in your diet. 2. Don't Follow the Fads The majority of diets nowadays are straight crap. If you want to look better, feel better, and live longer (and who doesn't) keep it simple. Eat lots of fruits, veggies, and naturally raised meats. Period. Don't complicate things unnecessarily. Remove processed sugars and eat organic whole foods. 3. Get Food as Close to The Source as Possible Something many people do not realize is that the quality of your food is often more important than the food itself. If you are eating processed meats and veggies, filled with pesticides and antibiotics, you may as well be enjoying a pop tart for breakfast. Read the label on your foods, always buy organic and natural, and if possible, shop at a local farmers market. Not only will the food taste better, it will also be far richer in nutrients than any of the chemically processed alternatives/ 4. Real Food is Cheaper Than Medical Bills  One of the most common excuses regarding healthy eating is that it's expensive. And it is. Sometimes, high quality organic meats and veggies are 5x more expensive than their processed alternatives. However, this should be seen as an investment in your health and quality of life, not as an expense. Eating chemically rich and nutrient devoid foods has been shown to lead to diabetes, cancer, autoimmune diseases and an early death. Do yourself a favor and invest in some high quality food so you don't have to “invest” in medical bills. 5. If You Really Want to Get What You Want You Must Decide What You Want Too many people today wander around aimlessly, with little to no direction in life and wonder why they are not successful. What they are not realizing is that to live an extraordinary life and achieve extraordinary things, you must decide exactly what you want. Set a vision and clear plans for your future, and then execute ruthlessly.

Special episode for you this week, folks. This is a selection adapted from first draft of my new book, The Wild Diet about 10 Hours on Tour with Tim McGraw & the Fittest Band in Country as they came through Austin. Comment below and let me know what you think.  Scroll down to the end and you can even hear me sing! :) - Abel As Alyson and I stepped aboard Tim McGraw's tour bus idling outside a Quality Inn in Austin, Texas, I realized that the real food movement is catching on. Instead of passed out groupies, elicit drugs, and broken furniture, the spotless bus had a zen-like calm about it as the smell of strong coffee wafted through the cabin. The bus was brimming with fresh produce, raw nut butters, seaweed, protein bars made of grass-fed lamb, and an imposing 5 pound sack of Brazil nuts. Fresh off filming the Today Show in New York City (see video below), the band seems bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Denny, enjoying an unprecedented 20-year-stint as bandleader and guitarist for the country superstar, is 57 and looks half his age. Denny's rippling biceps and sturdy frame remind you that he's not to be trifled with, despite his gentle and pleasant demeanor. Denny, a past guest of the Fat-Burning Man Show, has been following The Wild Diet for just over year (see below for before and afters). On a hearty diet that includes plenty of butter, bacon, and eggs, he's dropped 46 pounds (from 240 to 194) and gained a fair amount of muscle by hacking with fasting and feasting. Impressed by Denny's transformation, several bandmates joined the journey to better health and vitality. “Our keyboard player only decided to try your diet because he's allowed to eat coffee cake,” Denny grinned. “My kids love eating this way“ Dean-O the fiddle player adds. “They can do whatever they want when they're away from the house, but they know what's bad for them and usually don't eat pizza and junk carbs. They don't have a problem eating veggies. And they're totally into organ meats… head cheese is their favorite. Their friends think that eating brains is cool.” Eating brains is cool. Despite a demanding tour schedule that often includes multiple shows in one day, the Tim McGraw Band eats well. Recent feasts while on tour with Faith Hill include: grass-fed bacon burger (bunless, of course), snapper with poblano sauce, grilled chicken and asparagus, roast beef with vegetables, shellfish platter with oysters, crab, lobster, shrimp and ahi poke along with a beet and endive salad. When he's not fasting, Denny's favorite breakfast is steak and eggs. “It's really not that complicated once you get the hang of it - you just listen to your body and eat when you're hungry. I love it. I'm full of energy and feel 15 years younger. Eating better even makes me want to drink less.” And that's good, because this band doesn't drink before the show. They swing sledgehammers and throw gigantic tires around in the parking lot. Band Gone Wild: Tim McGraw's Prison Yard Workout Featured this month's cover of Men's Health after his own 40 pound weight loss, 47-year-old Tim McGraw is a specimen. He credits his rocking biceps and six-pack abs to his band's intense outdoor workouts that focuses on core training, strength and balanced movements to build up the muscles between the ribs and connective tissues. The Tim McGraw Band even tours with a separate trailer dedicated to workout gear, lugging heavy chains, sledgehammers, and sandbags across the country. “Tim is a beast, man, he keeps me on my toes,” says Denny. The band's recent workout included weighted pullups, push-ups, dips, and man-maker lunges followed-up with sprints in the parking lot. When they can find a gym, workouts focus on heavy, functional movements like deadlifts, barbell rows, and overhead presses. Band members unwind with mobility exercises, meditation, long walks, and “earthing” with bare feet on whatever grass they can find. "It keeps us off the bus and it keeps us out in the fresh air instead of staying in a cave all day long," McGraw said on The Today Show. And from watching the band play up-close from backstage, I can tell you that the Tim McGraw band puts on a dynamic show. And it's in large part their physicality that makes the band incredibly fun to watch. The Tim McGraw band is doing just about everything right. This band doesn't work out and eat real food to “look better naked.” They swing sledgehammers in the parking lot because they know that it makes them better at their job. Being in shape with wild workouts gives them the stamina and energy to give their fans a world-class show. Other performers, athletes, and movie stars are catching on. Others to “come out” as Paleo / Wild / Ancestral include: Uma Thurman, Jake Gyllenhal, Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Biel, Miley Cyrus (for better or worse), Joe Rogan, Adrian Rodgers, Tucker Max, Dwayne (the Rock) Johnson, Grant Hill, and Hugh Jackman to name a few.
