To coincide with the release of Pixar's science-fiction computer-animated feature Elio (Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi & Adrian Molina, 2025) this summer, Chris and Alex take listeners back a decade to 2015 and the emotional worlds created by the studio's earlier Inside Out (Pete Docter, 2015). Originally recorded at the 33rd annual Society for Animation Studies conference at Teesside University (and released soon after in October 2022), this episode featured as its special guest Dr. Eric Herhuth, Assistant Professor of Communication and Director of Film Studies at Tulane University, and author of Pixar and the Aesthetic Imagination: Animation, Storytelling, and Digital Culture (Berkeley: University of California Press, 2017). Relisten to hear the trio discussing animation's longstanding propensity for metaphor and political allegory; the film's 11-year-old protagonist Riley and the youthfulness of emotion; and the stakes of Inside Out as a film that encourages audiences to accept both the sadness of joy and the joy of sadness. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**
As the Talking Heads once nearly sang: “And may find yourself beamed up into a spacecraft. And you may find yourself pretending to be the leader of Earth. And you may find yourself hanging out with weird and wonderful beings from outer-space, going up against intergalactic warlords and maybe learning a thing or two about belonging along the way.” Yes, it's an Elio special on today's Script Apart, as we venture across the cosmos with the Pixar film's co-directors, Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian. Elio tells the story of a child who longs to be abducted by aliens. Still reeling from the loss of his parents and struggling to adjust to living with his well-meaing aunt, the character embarks on an adventure that changes how he sees life back on Earth. It was written by Julia Cho, Mark Hammer and Mike Jones, from a story by Madeline, Domee and Adrian Molina. Domee you may know as the director of Turning Red, which we covered on this show in 2022. Madeline, meanwhile, is the director behind Burrough, a beautiful Pixar short film from a couple of years ago (this is her first feature). In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, we discuss initial drafts of this story in which Olga was Elio's mother, rather than his aunt. I ask about how the film grapples with loneliness; the process of creating the magical worlds that Pixar movies so often invite filmgoers into, whether that's Monstropolis or Coco's Land of the Dead; and of course, the meaning of that Carl Sagan speech asking “Are we alone?” that close the film.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. We present our review of Elio (2025) from Disney and Pixar!Elio is a 2025 American animated science fiction adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi, and Adrian Molina[b], and written by Julia Cho, Mark Hammer, and Mike Jones, from a story by Molina, Sharafian, Shi, and Cho, the film stars the voices of Yonas Kibreab, Zoe Saldaña, Remy Edgerly, Brandon Moon, Brad Garrett, and Jameela Jamil. It follows an eleven-year-old boy named Elio Solís (Kibreab) who accidentally becomes the intergalactic ambassador of planet Earth after being beamed up to the Communiverse by aliens for making contact. He must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms and navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions that involves the warlord father of an alien he befriended.Elio was conceived by Molina as a story about childhood and social isolation and was inspired by growing up at a military base and his eventual enrollment at the California Institute of the Arts. The film was officially announced in September 2022, with Molina attached to direct. Molina later left the project to work on Coco 2 (2029), and in August 2024, it was announced that Shi and Sharafian would replace him as the lead directors. The production team devised a process, titled the "College Project", to create the look of the space setting, Communiverse. The film was shot with a virtual anamorphic lens and Pixar's new Luna lighting toolset was used to quickly define lighting and the overall aesthetic. Its musical score was composed by Rob Simonsen.Elio premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on June 10, 2025, and was theatrically released internationally on June 20, 2025.[5][6] The film has received positive reviews from critics and has grossed $34.8 million.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Evan is off this week, so it's Dave and Megan as a duo. First, Megan discusses THE QUEEN OF MY DREAMS (1:42), Fawzia Mirza's comedy-drama about a Bollywood-loving queer Pakistani-Canadian woman (Amrit Kaur) navigating her complicated relationship with her mother (Nimra Bucha) after a tragedy. It's a lovely film with great performances, vibrant costumes and production design, and a clever narrative structure. Then, Dave delves into 28 YEARS LATER (12:27), the long-awaited third film in the post-apocalyptic zombie horror series. Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, it stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes. Following a group of survivors on an island, does it live up to the iconic first film? Dave has lots of intense feelings about this one. Finally, Dave and Megan talk about ELIO (38:20), Pixar's animated sci-fi adventure written and directed by Adrian Molina, Domee Shi, and Madeline Sharafian. It follows Elio (Yonas Kibreab), a space-loving boy living with his aunt Olga (Zoe Saldaña), who gets his wish when aliens abduct him. One of us was delighted by the adorably sweet, wonderfully weird film. But it just didn't work for one of us. And on our Patreon bonus episode, we dive into 28 DAYS LATER (2002) and 28 WEEKS LATER (2007)!

The Oscar-winning Canadian animator and director Domee Shi (Bao, Turning Red) is back with a new Disney-Pixar movie, “Elio.” It's about an 11-year-old who's obsessed with getting abducted by aliens. Domee joins guest host Talia Schlanger to share how her own childhood inspired aspects of the film, why the theme of alien abduction is a great way to explore loneliness, and why it's nearly impossible for her to write a one-dimensional mother figure. If you enjoy this conversation, make sure to check out Tom Power's interview with Domee about her last film, “Turning Red.”
Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi talk to tom Sutcliffe about directing Pixar's latest film Elio, about a lonely boy who wants to make contact with aliens. The film is then reviewed by film producer and critic Jason Solomons and art critic and writer Hettie Judah. Tom and guests also discuss a major retrospective of the work of painter Jenny Saville at London's National Portrait Gallery, and The Möbius Book by Catherine Lacey.Jenny Saville is also the guest on this week's edition of This Cultural Life. There's Nobody Like U, Turning Red.Turning Red is a ground-breaking animated film, rightfully kicking off Animation Season 2025 in style, with magical puberty front and centre, that addresses the universal struggles of adolescence through the story of Mei Lee, a 13-year-old girl caught between her familial obligations and her burgeoning independence.Domee Shi's feature-length directorial debut represents a significant milestone as Pixar's first solo female director and first female director of colour, as well as having the first all-female lead team, and a unique animation style influenced by anime and traditional Chinese culture, enhancing its visual storytelling. And Red Panda Mei is SO FLUFFY!It's also a deft exploration of cultural identity reflecting the immigrant experience, of balancing family expectations with personal desires, as well as tackling periods; a subject that remains taboo in most situations, encouraging open conversations about menstruation. It captures the awkwardness and excitement of teenage life—particularly for girls who feel the weight of both cultural and familial expectations.Critically acclaimed yet hugely financially underperforming, Turning Red highlights the challenges faced by diverse narratives in mainstream cinema. It's more than just a children's movie; it is a celebration of the regular, normal, everyday experiences that shape us all. Let's relive our awkward teen experiences together!4*Town 4 EVER!!!I would love to hear your thoughts on Turning Red !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! Disney dumped Pixar's Turning Red into theaters, and it was a box office disaster! The movie -- about a young girl who turns into a giant red panda -- only managed to bring in $500,000 at the box office. To be fair, the film has been on Disney Plus for quite some time, but it's still pretty embarrassing considering there was virtually no competition. ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishTV.com ➡️ Audio Edition: https://open.spotify.com/show/6qJc5C6OkQkaZnGCeuVOD1 ➡️ Gaming News: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A7VIqE3r5MQkFgL9nifNc Additional Context: Originally released on Disney+ on March 11, 2022, Turning Red marked a strategic pivot from a planned worldwide theatrical release to a streaming debut, a decision influenced by the ongoing pandemic conditions. This move was part of a broader strategy for Disney and Pixar, reflecting an adaptation to the changing consumption habits of audiences during that time. The film, which narrates the story of Meilin "Mei" Lee, a 13-year-old girl who transforms into a giant red panda when experiencing strong emotions, was both a critical success and a novel entry in Pixar's portfolio, being the first feature film from the studio solely directed by a woman, Domee Shi. The box office figure of $500,000 might seem modest, especially when considering the film's substantial budget of approximately $175 million. However, it's important to note that the film's theatrical release in the United States and United Kingdom on February 9, 2024, came long after its initial debut on Disney+. The late theatrical release was part of a special engagement designed to offer audiences the chance to experience Turning Red, along with other Pixar films like Soul and Luca, on the big screen ahead of the studio's June 2024 theatrical release of Inside Out 2. The Canadian director Domee Shi won an Oscar in 2018 for her animated short film “Bao.” For her debut feature, “Turning Red,” she mined her childhood in Toronto to create the first Pixar film set in Canada. A few years ago, around the time of its release on Disney+, Domee talked to Tom about making “Turning Red,” how she drew inspiration from her family life, and what it was like reliving the awkwardness of adolescence. Now, for the first time, audiences can see “Turning Red” on the big screen as it hits theatres this month.
Sad news for all of us: producer Rachael Cusick— who brought us soul-stirring stories rethinking grief (https://zpr.io/GZ6xEvpzsbHU) and solitude (https://zpr.io/eT5tAX6JtYra), as well as colorful musings on airplane farts (https://zpr.io/CNpgUijZiuZ4) and belly flops (https://zpr.io/uZrEz27z63CB) and Blueberry Earths (https://zpr.io/EzxgtdTRGVzz)— is leaving the show. So we thought it perfect timing to sit down with her and revisit another brainchild of hers, The Cataclysm Sentence, a collection of advice for The End. To explain: one day in 1961, the famous physicist Richard Feynman stepped in front of a Caltech lecture hall and posed this question to a group of undergraduate students: “If, in some cataclysm, all of scientific knowledge were to be destroyed, and only one sentence was passed on to the next generation of creatures, what statement would contain the most information in the fewest words?” Now, Feynman had an answer to his own question—a good one. But his question got the entire team at Radiolab wondering, what did his sentence leave out? So we posed Feynman's cataclysm question to some of our favorite writers, artists, historians, futurists—all kinds of great thinkers. We asked them “What's the one sentence you would want to pass on to the next generation that would contain the most information in the fewest words?” What came back was an explosive collage of what it means to be alive right here and now, and what we want to say before we go. As Judy Blume's classic YA novel Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret is adapted for the big screen, Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode explore how a recent wave of coming of age films have looked at the subject from a teenage girl's perspective. Ellen speaks to critic Hannah Strong about the coming of age films that made her feel seen as a teen, from The Virgin Suicides to Welcome To The Dollhouse. She also talks to director Domee Shi about the inspiration for her 2022 Pixar film Turning Red. And Mark talks to filmmaker and actor Marielle Heller about her directorial debut The Diary of a Teenage Girl, and why making a coming of age film can be a coming of age experience in itself. Plus Nida Manzoor, director of teen comedy-drama Polite Society, shares her favourite teen girls on screen in Viewing Notes. Producer: Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4
Jump behind the scenes with us to experience the highs and lows of producing one of Pixar's most celebrated and subversive films: Turning Red from the minds of Domee Shi and Julia Cho, who wrote it. Domee Shi began as a story intern at Pixar Animation Studios in June 2011, and was soon hired as a story artist on the Academy Award-winning feature film INSIDE OUT. In 2015 she began pitching ideas for short films, and soon was green lit to write and direct BAO which won the Academy Award® for Best Animated Short Film. Shi most recently made her feature film directorial debut on TURNING RED which was also Oscar-nominated. Her TURNING RED co-writer Julia Cho began her career in the New York Theater scene, writing a number of celebrated plays which scored her the Windham-Campbell Literary Prize in 2020 celebrating her body of her work. Her work as a playwright earned her spots in a number of prestigious writers' rooms including BIG LOVE, HALT AND CATCH FIRE, and PAPER GIRLS, which she co-executive produced. Other Best Picture nominees in addition to those three films: “The Banshees Of Inisherin,” “Women Talking,” “Triangle Of Sadness,” “The Fabelmans,” “All Quiet On The Western Front,” “Tár,” and “Elvis.” Other categories covered include Best Animated Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Best Supporting Actress, and more! Given the chance to pitch three story ideas to Pixar to make her feature directing debut, Domee Shi wound up pursuing the most personal— the story of a Chinese-Canadian girl going through puberty in especially wild fashion. Rebecca Ford talks to the director of Turning Red about the Easter eggs from her own childhood she included in the movie, and why the most specific stories can turn out to be the most universal. NEW! I'm smiling from ear to ear about this conversation with Domee Shi, a Chinese-born, Academy Award–winning Canadian animator, storyboard artist, and director for Pixar. With Bao, Domee became the first woman to direct a short film for Pixar, and with Turning Red — which was released on Disney+ in March 2022 — Domee became the first woman to direct a feature-length project for the animation studio. It was so fun to connect with her about creativity, learning, curiosity, and her incredible, groundbreaking work. Also, she may have inspired my new life motto. Learn more about your ad choices. Comedian Emmy Blotnick and Emma find a message in a bottle, learn what not to do with cheese, and Domee Shi, director of Pixar's "Turning Red" talks about her Harry Potter fan fiction.
Pixar is back with another movie aiming to hit you in all the feels: Turning Red. It's about a charismatic 13-year-old girl named Meilin (Rosalie Chiang) who discovers that whenever she gets too excited about anything, she now turns into a giant red panda. Directed by Domee Shi, the film features the voice talent of Sandra Oh, as well as some fun nods to the early 2000s boy band era. The film is streaming on Disney+.
After a debrief on the ups and downs of Dave's first tour of dad duty at the Happiest Place on Earth, Dave and Chris call up Domee Shi, the director of Pixar's latest release, to hear about how her new film came together. Discussed: Dole Whip, Toronto Chinatowns, the emotions inspired by boy bands, early 2000s nostalgia, getting kicked out of boarding school, eel fried rice, art-directing pork slices, the Pixar development method, drawing vs. cooking, art review stank face, how to pronounce “Ghibli,” Chris resisting getting into anime, Grace's take on the movie, and betting on the next ride to debut at Disneyland.
