Sorry for the late-releasing episodes! We're still trying to adjust our schedules for our own client work, as well as this podcast. We're both adapting to our quarantines and it's a stressful time, for sure. John is a bit hungover on today's episode and has recently shaved his head. And Emily is dealing with a sick spouse (not COVID, thankfully) but it's still stressful on top of everything else. We talk a lot about our current situations, which as you may know if you’re listening to this around the time it comes out, is related to the COVID-19 crisis. It’s important to mention, as we do every episode, we are not doctors. Please refer to the CDC website guidelines for information or any questions you may have. New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re subscribed so you’ll never miss an episode and so you can listen to all the back episodes! Don’t forget, you can talk to us and other Weighters while we record by going to the Hate to Weight Discussion Group on Facebook. We record every Thursday at 11 a.m.! Call in your WINS or RANTS anytime! 760-WINNING -— 760-946-6464 We are not doctors. Please talk to your doctor before trying any new diet or exercise routine. John has shaved his head! Don’t forget to join the Hate to Weight Discussion Group on Facebook so you can see! John is also a bit hungover while recording. Emily has found herself wanting a cigarette. The stress from this whole thing is real, y’all! Thank goodness we can’t go out. Don’t smoke, kids. Ever. And don’t listen to 18-year-old Emily. She’s missing her college vices and has chosen swearing as her current vice to relieve stress. Please! Stay home! Keep your bubble intact and sing some Police if you need to — “Don’t stand so close to me!” John is ready to hunker down until there is a vaccine. He’s getting back into Intermittent Fasting and eventually keto. Emily’s planning a Spirit Week Challenge! Want to spruce up your daily wardrobe? Check it out! Have you ever eaten a typical food so much that you actually get sick of it and never eat it again? We’re coming up on our Two-Year Anniversary of this show. Be prepared — Emily goes into a segment about Easter Candy and the different varieties she loves. Warning: If you are starting Intermittent Fasting, drinking will be a bit different. Take your time because alcohol usually hits differently. Emily is actually missing crowds. Not people — just crowds. “Mental health comes first … but, Pearl Jam!” Thank you to our listener Deb who described our show as a “clubhouse for those losing weight” on Reddit! Should we rename our Facebook group the Hate to Weight Clubhouse. We’re also featured on Feedspot’s Top 20 Weight Loss Podcasts You Should Follow in 2020! Emily’s husband has a cold this week and is doing the work of two parents, plus trying to work, plus dealing with the world as it is. Suffice to say, it’s been a hard week and the journey to getting one clean knife was enough to throw her into a tizzy. In case anyone needs it, Mobile Smash Rooms are a thing! Even though there’s a lot of stress in Emily’s house, she was able to eat some food she doesn’t normally get because her husband is sick. Silver linings. Awesome Winning Wednesdays, everyone! We’re so glad you’re all still working toward your goals with us! Emily’s PMS/Season of Our Discontent is still going on. No pregnancy on the horizon, just stress. Sorry for the later episodes.     Growing up, were you taught money was scarce and hard to come by? In this week's Focus Friday we are diving deep into our money mindsets! If we have a core belief that attracting money in abundance is challenging; it will feel exponentially painful when we do not have control over our finances. We have an opportunity to see things with a different lens. Providing value + service to others is always going to be the highest vibration through which we can serve. Instead of thinking about how we are going to generate more revenues, think about how we can best utilize our light + energy to fulfill ourselves and others. Old friend, but new to the show, we welcome Andrew Alliance and his dazzling personality to the Real Brian Show! Andrew co-hosts a gaming podcast called The Show Radio (links below) and a large focus of this episode is around gaming, but through a very unique lens. We're talking about why we do what we do, about the impact we have on the people around us, and why it's important to adopt the mantra "you do you". In This Episode Welcome, Andrew! Andrew's story You Do You Destiny 2, Red Dead Redemption Having an impact... You Do You My favorite line from Andrew in this episode is, "Play what you love and don't look for validation from someone else for why you play the games that you like." You do you! It's a statement that can be broadly applied to hobbies and interests... we apologize for what we love to do. Judgment will always come from the outside, whether it's from folks who think we're "not real fans" if X-Y-Z or think that if you love one game you couldn't possibly love another. Nerding out and geeking out is a staple of The Real Brian Show. Whether you've been listening for one episode or 131 episodes, we are not shy about the things we love. Some people like drinking Folgers crystals... and though we ridicule it from time to time, we accept it! Because it's a losing battle. Just kidding. We love the breadth of personalities that are drawn in by the breadth of interests and it's endlessly interesting to me to see where interests overlap from people of all backgrounds. Don't apologize for what you love! Embrace it. You do you! Links The Show Radio Listen to The Show Radio @uriyya (Andrew on Twitter)

Dark vs light is just one preferential pairs we debate when it comes to our media consumption. Do you like it miserable and edgy like Mr. What and Lord Thunder? Or uplifting and positive like Brian? Oh, and welcome to Jason Cabassi! In This Episode Welcome, Jason Cabassi and Lord Thunder First things first... Jason needs a superhero name Brief history on the Jason/Brian friendship Why Walking Dead fell off the rails Dark vs Light: what are we drawn to? Revisiting the Enneagram Virtual Reality Red Dead Redemption 2, Resident Evil 2 Dark vs Light Interestingly, it's not a conversation we've had a lot on this show... even though it's totally right up our alley. This trio of hosts provides an ideal makeup of individuals falling on both sides of the spectrum and the guys have an insightful conversation about what it is about movies and television with dark thematic elements that draws them in. Brian shares why he prefers lighter, more positive content. Before we make Brian sound like a delicate flower, let's make it clear that we delineate horror and suspense. There are some tvs and movies that have dark themes, but don't go evil... and that's largely where Brian [and myself] draw the line. I'll let you listen to Brian in his own words, but from my own perspective, I'm very sensitive to depressive, obsessive themes and internalize them far too deeply. If you've listened to any of the TRBS shows I've been on, you'll know that I tend to go deep pretty quickly. I'm very introspective and most of my daily activities take place inside my head. At some point I just recognized that dark themes affect me negatively... and stopped consuming them. That perspective really only ever seems to be vocalized in that direction, however. Have you ever heard someone say, "Yeah, I just can't take all the positive vibes?" More often it's the lack of depth or lack of reality in some content we'd consider "light". And light doesn't even have to mean overtly positive, it could just mean like... Arrow versus Walking Dead, right? Arrow is dark in its own right, but it's a different kind of dark from the Walking Dead. Ironically, even Arrow got too dark for me. Remember that time when I quit Arrow Squad? Yeah... Even when we think we can clearly define our overarching preferences, there are still exceptions and limitations depending on peripheral preferences. Maybe we like dark themes, but can't stand a particular actor... meaning we won't watch a film even when it is something we'd otherwise totally enjoy. Or - this happens to me a lot - I won't watch a film that checks all my boxes because it has an actor who I associate with a certain typecast. I feel bad about that (sorta) but... It's we're having salad for dinner one night and I say, "I love cheese! Pile it on!" Then you make pancakes for dinner the next morning and pile it high with blue cheese leftover from the salad the night before. That's not what I meant! Talking about preferences is interesting, and ends up revealing a lot more about ourselves than we realize. Where do you come down on the dark vs light debate? Turns out, it is TOTALLY possible to have a good time and have a full experience without forking over $100. If this trip interests you, you're going to want to take notes. Also, because they're talking about homemade ice cream... I figured I should leave my personal favorite ice cream recipe here. Because... it's July. The best part about this recipe is that after it comes out of the ice cream machine (and sits in the freezer for an hour or two) you can literally throw in your favorite ingredient(s) to give it ANY flavor. I love throwing oreos in... but you could do raspberries, strawberries, chocolate chips. Just use an immersion blender to get it all nice and mixed in. FYI - there's a lot of whisking involved. Ingredients 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 3/4 cups whole milk 3/4 cup + 1 tablespoon sugar 3 tablespoons honey pinch salt 6 egg yolks 1 3/4 cups heavy whipping cream 3 teaspoons vanilla extract Instructions Whisk cornstarch and 1/2 cup of the milk until smooth (set aside) In a medium saucepan, combine remaining 1 1/4 cups milk, sugar, honey, and salt and WHISK! Add in the milk and cornstarch mixture. WHISK! Heat on medium high heat until it begins to bubble. Don't boil! Whisk egg yolks in separate bowl (use a large bowl) Pour about 1/2 of the hot milk mix into the egg very slowly and whisking rapidly as you do. We don't want to cook the eggs. Make sure saucepan is on medium heat Pour the egg yolks plus milk mixture back into the pot and stir constantly (if you don't, it'll curdle) When mixture reaches 170 F, pull off stove Add heavy whipping cream and vanilla Pour into separate bowl (something that won't melt from the hot liquid, haha) and cover loosely with plastic wrap - press the wrap against the custard Refrigerate for at least 4 hours (the longer the better) Churn in ice cream maker Return to freezer for an hour or two Eat or add more yummies with immersion blender!! In This Episode Welcome back, Podcast Overlord! Reminiscing... Wynonna Earp & the Fandom What's Hot? Learning about living with what happens Great Time Listening to Kevin and Brian chat brought me back. Way back. When I first started listening to podcasts, it was The Fringe Podcast and The Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. That was it. But The Fringe Podcast was my gateway drug to a whole new world, one which led me into getting behind the mic myself. Along that road I had the privilege and the pleasure to meet and work with Kevin. I've never met anyone quite like him, and I highly doubt I ever will. He likes what he likes and isn't afraid to come right out and say it, disregarding what anyone else thinks! He can rally and inspire a fandom in ways I've never seen before and I think it's due to this unashamed passion for the stories he invests in. As it goes, our time podcasting together came to an end and as I've sort of sidled out of the whole television-podcasting realm, I'm now struck with strong nostalgia for the old days. Kevin made talking about television fun and always had the acuity to remind us that it's just a story and that we're supposed to be having fun! Even when Arrow let us down, it was having a chance to get together with Kevin and Brian every week that made doing a podcast worthwhile (not to mention our incredible listeners). I learned a lot from Kevin by working with him. I learned about etiquette and presence, about the importance of commitment and the necessity of passion. I'm sure at times he wished I would grow up, or settle down, or reign it in (Brian and I have a tendency to... take details and talk them to death...). But Kevin is cordial, pleasant, an incredible friend and an incredible inspiration. So it is with great enthusiasm that I encourage you to go check out Tuning into SciFi TV to witness the breadth of his genre-tv knowledge and his insightful, yet often whimsical, analyses. Are you sick of being told by "experts" or by "scientists" that you're too old to do something? We definitely are! If there's one thing we emphasize on this show, it's that you're only as old as you feel. Unless you feel like an infant, in which case we don't support that. In a world that like to complain that we're getting old too quickly, it seems that sometimes we confuse immature individuals taking part in an activity with the activity itself being immature. So with the help of CJ "Lord Thunder", we're going to dig into this shot of espresso and a ton more fun Friday stuff! In This Episode Welcome back Lord Thunder! Apple Watch Birthday celebrations Networking equipment... 13 Reasons Why (Season 2) What are YOU too old to still be doing? Too Old Epicurus once said: "Be moderate in order to taste the joys of life in abundance." As Lord Thunder accurately points out, just about anything we have access to in life, if over-used or abused, can kill us. And if not outright kill, then seriously damage our internal organs! Looking at how much acetaminophen you'd have to ingest in order for it to kill you or damage you might seem extreme, but the same could largely be said about gaming. When we reach levels of "toxicity", there is something else wrong. Talking strictly from my own experience, I resort to extremes when something is imbalanced. We're all about taking care of ourselves, here at the Real Brian Show. We talk about healthy lifestyles, anything from staying active to learning how to eat right to socializing and friendship. We'd never advocate for isolation or eating nothing but pizza. There's a reason Brian talks about eating healthy, but also eating the frickin' cookie! Scientists provide us with vital insights into the Dos and Donts of life. They share common pitfalls that humans face or risky behaviors, and they share what will help us, make us healthier and happier. Below I linked to a video that goes into some detail about being "too old" for gaming and the video makes some excellent points, excellent and accurate. However, we very well know that gaming itself isn't immature, gaming itself won't rot our brains. It's a compilation of things, and we're all responsible for seeking a good balance between having fun and taking care of ourselves. Gaming isn't the only thing people tell us we're "too old for". The biggest resurgence I've noticed over the last couple years is coloring. Adult coloring books are making a comeback. In fact, after my dad died... I received multiple coloring books as gifts from people saying, "You might not believe me, but this is really therapeutic." Reader's Digest agrees. They created a huge list of things we're never too old for. On this list? Watching fairytales. Crying. Dyeing your hair a different color. Sometimes we need the child-like activities in order to stay sane, to let loose or loosen up, but there is nothing about these activities that inherently has age attached to it. In the end... the warning is to always be careful! Remember that we're prone to addiction and developing bad habits, so seek balance and moderation over total immersion. If you like Thai food but don't really know where to start... here's a great recipe. It's simple: spicy Thai noodles. What do you need? Linguine pasta Honey Chili Paste Soy Sauce Sesame oil Scallions, carrots, peanuts, cilantro, hot sauce So simple, right? I add pork to this recipe. But here's what you do: Boil pasta while doing the steps below Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and 1/2 C sesame oil with 1 tablespoon of red pepper flakes When oil is hot, strain pepper flakes and reserve the oil in a bowl. Add the oil back into the skillet, then add 1 1/2 teaspoons of chili paste. Whisk together with 6 tablespoons of soy sauce and 6 tablespoons of honey Toss pasta in the skillet with the sauce BOOM! Top with chopped scallions, carrots, cilantro... serve hot or cold. I think I'm going to go eat my feelings now. For the second week in a row we're glad to welcome back Tony, aka Captain Influence! In our typical Superhero Friday fashion, we've got the fun and we've got the serious, but this week we want to circle back to reminding each other of how important it is for the two to overlap from time to time. We're a people of extremes, aren't we? We tend toward extremes and finding a balance can be our primary focus in life. But it's exhausting, isn't it? Sometimes we just have to take the fun when there is fun, take the serious when it calls for serious, and not force either when they seem a little too far out of reach. In This Episode Welcome back, Tony! Dirrrty chai Weekend of gaming and junky food Show for the Almost Famous! We all want to be someone Alien Isolation Moosik Never Surrender Realizations about the somebody we are trying to be can come in spurts over a long period of time. We learn a little bit more about ourselves, then express that part of ourself to the world. When we express ourselves, we unconsciously gauge reactions to our personality and those reactions can either make us retreat inward and stay the way we've always been or make us change ourselves. Neither reaction is wrong, they're both very natural, but one of the things we love to celebrate here at the Real Brian Show is the fact that you can continue be who you are in spite of the reactions from others if who you are is who you want to be. Brian talks about being a somebody to other somebodies and how discouraging that can be when we're not immediately accepted. Changing ourselves to be accepted by someone else is still a rejection. We reject ourselves. Continual improvement, betterment, increase in emotional intelligence... these are all good things and I do not want to draw a fine line at never changing ever! Change is good, but changing to meet the expectations of others or because of someone else's dissatisfaction is not the good kind of change! In our society which is quickly being eaten up by social media we seem to have reverted to a middle school mentality of pleasing others by striving to meet ineffable qualities and standards. The qualities and standards are subjective and fluctuate based on someone's mood or someone's circumstances. We like to celebrate individuality and having fun and nerding out while simultaneously exploring the realness of life because it only seems to be then that we start to capture the full picture of life. They were used to provide energy for their warriors going to battle. West African history has some fun coffee history, too. One story, from Yemen, claims that farmers noticed their goats were full of "pep" after eating the berries of a particular plant, who's properties had never been assessed before. The people described the goats as "dancing" due to intoxication from the berries. So, naturally, they had to try for themselves! There are dozens of stories of different groups of people around the world discovering coffee, and its effects. In This Episode Welcome, Daphne! Where have you come from, where did you go? Training with the Second City Improvisational Conservatory Program Bad at leadership led Daphne into a deep dive of the subject A coach is often cast as a hero Brain challenges standing in our way to ultimate success Character Traits When considering a job or a position with responsibilities, there are certain character traits that necessarily go along with it. Often, I think we confuse character traits and skills; where a character trait may be "resourceful", it's skill counterpart may be "proactive". Really, the first thought that came to mind when thinking about this is the difference between being disciplined and detail-oriented. Character traits are fascinating because the same type of trait is never the same between two people. We are all so unique that we apply and carry out our traits in very different ways. One of the points Dr. Scott makes in this interview is the fact that there are some traits, particularly around leadership, that can be learned.Just because someone is naturally bossy or naturally good at delegating doesn't make them a great leader. That boldness is a great trait to have, but unless the skills of leadership are applied, the trait of being a leader falls short of what it can be. So listen in! Dr. Scott points out two essential character traits for leaders which are not only learnable, but unequivocally achievable. If you've ever doubted your ability to overcome some perceived vacuity, Dr. Scott will be able to encourage you to be empowered and seek after the tools that can help you build up those traits. In a world swimming with selfish ambitions and entitled attitudes, we are incredibly excited to bring you a breath of fresh air in the form of Andrea Drepaul. You may have seen Andrea on shows like Covert Affairs, Beauty and the Beast, or The Expanse, but how much do you really know about the Canadian-born actress? As both a woman, and a woman of diverse ethnicity (she's of Portuguese and Guyanese descent), she is becoming a huge voice and advocate of diversifying Hollywood while helping to change the perception of actors by modeling leadership in her field. In This Episode Welcome, Andrea! Andrea's driving purpose, her story to tell Understanding the human psyche and representing that through acting Gratitude and starting off every day with 10 things she's thankful for Returning compliments with "Thank you!" Gratitude Imagine how your perception of a day could change by waking up and, before anything else, bringing 10 things to mind you are thankful for. Big things, small things, the things that often go overlooked. Did you know that being grateful can actually alter your brain chemistry? Exerting gratitude, if you want to put it in such terms, activates regions of the brain associated with dopamine. Dopamine acts as a neurotransmitter that helps control the brain's reward and pleasure centers, regulating emotional responses. When dopamine is produced and is dispersed throughout the brain, it literally acts as a positive reinforcement and is vital to driving us to action. Like most things in life, gratitude must become a habit in order for it to be effective. It doesn't do our bodies any good to work out intensely once every month or two; muscles need a constant cycle of conditioning and rest in order to tone and grow. The brain is not exactly a muscle, but it behaves like one - especially when we treat it like one. Physical activity produces more brain cells, gratitude spawns physical activity... there is a distinct cycle, a distinct interdependence. We hope the interview in this episode with Andrea encourages you and inspires you to become a leader in your own field. In the words of William Shakespeare: "Be not afraid of greatness. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them" (from Twelfth Night). Even when it seems like someone else outranks you or outshines you in some way, greatness is representative of the life we want... not of the life we have. In this installment of The Real Brian Show, we welcome author, speaker, and entrepreneur Cardiff D. Hall. His book, Tide Turners, was just published in January! We're so excited to share this interview with you not just because Cardiff is a gifted storyteller, but because of how encouraging and inspirational his experience is. After you've listened to the interview, please check out his website and, perhaps, buy his book! In This Episode Welcome, Cardiff! Where did it all begin? A change of perspective in order to take control Time Turners & taking action! Passing on what he's learned Being of value to others Take Control Those of us who don't run our own business have likely had the nightmare, literally or figuratively, where we are unceremoniously fired from our job. Perhaps the reason, in our nightmare, is a self-concocted, far-stretching reason, or perhaps there is no reason at all. We sign that employment contract and promising to give over 40+ hours of our life to a company that will, in turn, give us a bit of money to live on, and become beholden to that entity. Ideally, of course, that relationship isn't so bleak that we consider ourselves slaves to their system, but in capitalist America the bottom line is that business will trump relationship. To expect it another way is asking for pain. This mentality has changed so much in the last fifty to a hundred years, hasn't it? Loyalty to companies isn't the same as it used to be, people aren't staying at companies as long as they used to. And, as such, companies have had to restructure some to account for higher turnover. It's not so much that we live in a constant state of uncertainty, rather that the unexpected can and will happen. How can you prepare for something you don't know is going to happen? I enjoy interviews that help us explore different facets of mindset and attitude, because even though it's one of our favorite topics here at The Real Brian Show... there are so many discussions to be had. There are so many requirements from mindset. Being fired, for whatever reason, or encountering professional instability (translate for yourself if you're an entrepreneur!), can bring out the absolute worst in us. But developing habits that enable us to take action and take control of situations can help us react better when the upheavals come. Yes. When they come. Because upheavals will come! Being prepared doesn't necessarily mean that it will make a bad situation better, but bad situations can feel a lot less worse when we have the right attitude and have trained ourselves to respond well even under stress. It's a process, and no one is perfect, but after this interview with Cardiff I expect you'll want to pick up his book! Links Cardiff's Website Tide Turners (Buy It) Tide Turners (learn about it)

Movies: Beauty & the Beast, Power Rangers Mad Scientist & Med School Overwatch and customization Affogato and Elk Meatballs Fill your mind with something positive, joyful & encouraging Fun Is Overrated Fun is overrated. Be responsible! Because here at the Real Brian Show, we're all business. Not monkey business, straight up business. Yeah, that's sounds like us. Not! We like to have fun here and advocate that it is far from overrated, but sometimes the world likes to tell us to "take a chill pill" and "come down off that cloud" while we're having fun. Take an hour today and just have some fun, detox with a little discussion about the cheese-factor of Power Rangers, the awesome customizability of Overwatch, and some great food and beverages our hosts have been digging into lately. Inside, Outside This week's health hack involves a practice whereby we take just 15 minutes a day and fill our minds with something positive, joyful and/or enriching. You know the adage, "You are what you eat!" Well, I'm a firm believer that eventually... everything that is inside of us comes out of us. What we put into our bodies, whether it's junk food or films that celebrate crass behavior or music that promotes drugs and violence, works its way into our minds. Taking just 15 minutes a day as a start, step away from the usual stuff and find something positive to fill your mind. And maybe eat a banana while you do so! The mind is the most powerful tool we have in our arsenal; brawn can get us only so far, but will gets us the rest of the way. How else do you suppose the force works? Filling your mind with things that are positive and enriching will enable you to output those same qualities, and here at the Real Brian Show we are staunch supporters of encouraging behavior that will make this world a better place. Fine. I'll do it. Where do I start? That's the spirit! Well, we're not just talking about positive self-talk (because it is important to show yourself a little grace now and then!), we want you to go after a spirit of positivity (optimism, can-do). This doesn't mean being unrealistically positive, but rather avoiding the tendency to be strictly negative about a situation and getting your mindset under control so that you have an accurate perception of that situation. This is something I've been continuously trying to put into practice myself. With various stressors in my life, I've come to associate certain sounds or certain people with intense stress. As a result, whenever those sounds or people come up, my body has this immediate negative reaction and my mind spirals in a hundred different directions telling me about all of the most terrible scenarios I can fathom. To get a handle on this, I've started with simply one thing: get the facts. Take a deep breath, separate what I know from what I don't know, and then ask questions to figure out the things I don't know. Amazingly, I've come to see how many lies my brain tells me in order to initiate a freak-out and ultimately leading to unnecessary physical or mental anguish. Sometimes positivity can be as simple as information-gathering. Take a step out of the sphere of negativity and enter into a world where things are possible through intentional application. Meet Jason Hartman! This is one interview you're going to want to listen to because there are many takeaways for us all, whether you're on Wall Street or making good money or trying to be successful in whatever enterprise you choose. Jason upholds the definition of consistency, of slow and steady, and of working smarter (not necessarily harder) as an approach to business. We're so excited to share this interview with you and hope you will take a little extra time to check out Jason's websites. In This Episode Welcome, Jason! The 2-track approach Great mentorship yielded a successful slow and steady mindset Investment: Thou shalt maintain control Some excellent advice Wall Street You know what they say... When you mess with the bull, you get the horns. I took this picture of the famous Wall Street Bull on my first trip to New York last year. When my small, Northeast Minneapolis company was acquired by an international company, my eyes were opened to a whole new world of business. Wall Street is no joke. New York City itself is no joke, at that. Our office in New York is a handful of blocks north of Wall Street, but well within smelling-distance, and close enough to see just how serious people are about trying to make it in the big world. While it's not necessarily my scene, I do see the attraction to a life spent at that pace. I could never keep up with what would be required to live and work in New York, but it is stimulating to me in small doses. It's kind of a wake up call to the normal and steady pace that I like to enjoy. But my goals have never been around making money, they've been in trying to go places where I'm most effective, where I'm needed, and where I can make a difference. Honestly, if Wall Street is your game, or if you want it to be your game, there is no judgment from us. But there are, inevitably, certain requirements, certain sacrifices, that will need to be made when playing that game. In a world obsessed with money and making it to the big time, Wall Street is just another cog in that machine. Whether it's the sacrifice of time, or something a bit more costly, there are prices to pay for playing on that scale. But what if there was another way? A better way? A way that we could work with people and create a mutually-beneficial situation which enhanced the culture and the lives of everyone you touch! A dream, you say? I don't know. My belief has always been that the most effective gestures [can be] made at the 1:1 level, when goods and services are exchanged on a personal level. (Of course, with any sort of customer-facing services, we also run the risk of making very ineffective or detrimental gestures.) Like Jason, I am all for capitalism, but I have a huge heart for small business. Because when you're known by someone, it makes a difference. Doesn't it? Jason's advice to us about investment (Commandment #3) is "thou shalt maintain control". As much as he means this about investing our hard-earned money, I don't see any reason it should stop there. Monday's episode was about being responsible and finding solutions that create mutually beneficial outcomes for everyone whom policies affect, and that applies as much to the investment of our time and energy (involvement in business) as it does to the government "investing" in our lives. When we start putting everything on auto-pilot, when we give more fuel to the bulls, we have fewer opportunities to wield the most important tool of business we have: the personal touch. I don't believe humans are inherently good, but I believe humans are capable of great good. Even more importantly, I believe that when we practice goodness we see inexplicable, wonderful outcomes that motivate us, and others, to do more good. The truth is, New York is a crowded place... and the Earth we live on is quite large. Don't stop looking for what your niche is; pursue it and bring your unique skill set to an area of this world that needs it most. Welcome back to The Real Brian Show! We've got a great line-up for you in this episode as we talk about racism, and its more general ancestor - bullying. Racism is just one of the hot-button social issues that plagues our society. The cause and effects are deeply rooted into our society, but that doesn't make them untouchable. In fact, it makes them even more tangible. In This Episode Welcome to CJ Thunder (aka Carl)! Super secret hot cocoa recipe... Racism: what are it's roots? Experiences with bullying. How do we fight bullying? Chewbacca joins the conversation More from Lee Stephen, including comments on adversity, advice for aspiring writers, and some big truth bombs. Bullying The famous quote from Eleanor Roosevelt oft comes to mind when talking about adversity and bullying: "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." Also the old adage: "sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me." Quotes and sayings, like these ones, might encourage us to take the power away from a bully, but they do little to acknowledge the fact that bullying does hurt. Brian and Carl face the issue of racism with compassion. Words matter because we wield them in very specific ways in order to illicit a range of emotions from other people. We use them to manipulate, to incite fear, to wound. We use them to make someone fall in love with us, to tell someone how much we care, or to communicate difficult news in a delicate way. The conversation in this podcast addresses the fact that the people wielding words for evil purposes may, in fact, be hurting themselves. Instead of fighting fire with fire, fight back with an attitude of how you wish the other person had treated you. Adversity We face adversity when bullied. Whatever brand of bullying you've received, whether it is racism, like Carl, or discrimination, like Brian, that period of suffering is actually called adversity. My dad always used to say that our character is revealed the most when we are under adversity, because it's only when we're under pressure that we're truly challenged with wielding the tools most intrinsically important to human life. I've been learning a lot about compassion in the last couple months, learning how to see suffering in others and find the patience to listen and hear the struggle they face. But compassion is about so much more than acknowledgement and patience, it's about the endurance of those qualities. Compassion feels to me to be the intrinsic opposite of bullying and, as such, the greatest weapon that can be wielded. If adversity comes from times of struggle, and let's specifically target bullying since that is the topic of discussion here, the opposing force of struggle is peace or surrender. Carl made a great point about hitting a bully with kindness, in that showing a bully that you are unperturbed by their attack makes them more likely to back down. Retaliating with hurtful words or a punch to the face reinforces the attack from the bully, inciting the very response they want. They want to cause pain, because seeing others in pain is the fastest way to feel less of one's own.
