Known for his Emmy-winning work on "Euphoria," and films like "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" and "Zola," Colman Domingo took on a new role with the animated short film "New Moon." Adapting a segment from his one-man show "A Boy and His Soul," Colman and his husband Raul set out to bring the words of Colman's mother to life. "I'm very much a mama's boy," Colman says. "For me, this is a testament to my mother's imagination." In "New Moon," Colman narrates the story of J.J., a young boy who is hearing about a special ritual from his mother. "I remember that moment so very well, of her teaching me about the New Moon and this ritual that I've had for years. The moment you see the New Moon, you just hold your hand wide open, hold your purse open, and whatever you're seeking, it will come to you." It's a joyous expression of love and positivity between a mother and son, all brought to life with surreal animation by French directors Jérémie Balais and Jeff Le Bars. If "New Moon" manages to score a nomination for Best Animated Short, the pair would be the first LGBT couple nominated in the same year. Raul describes what it was like to work together: "We see the best in each other. And I think we always encourage the best in each other. Because out there you can just step out, and you'll be just ripped to shreds for whatever and however and whomever." Raul and Colman co-wrote the screenplay for the film, while Colman played all of the parts, and Raul directed him for the rotoscope. "I trust his critical eye," Colman says of Raul. "And so we already trust each other somewhat creatively. He holds me accountable." In a recent conversation with Daniel Howat from Next Best Picture, Colman and Raul Domingo shared the heart behind their animated short film, memories of Colman's mother, and what they hope the legacy of this work will be.   Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Join David and not one but two special guests; Mike 1 and also Mike from the ‘Mike, Mike And Oscar Podcast' as they break down all the nominations for the 94th Academy Awards. Every category is discussed and the nomination tallies are analysed. The Best Picture race still looks like a three headed monster but The Power Of The Dog leads the way with 12 nominations, with West Side Story and Belfast sitting behind with a tied seven nominations each. Denis Villeneuve was a shock snub in the directing category but his epic Dune showed a strong hand with a total of ten nominations. Perhaps one of the biggest shocks of nominations morning came in the Best Actress category as Lady Gaga was snubbed but Kristen Stewart made it in for her portrayal of Princess Diana in Spencer. David and the two Mikes asses how and why this may have happened, was it snub power? Or did the Academy just hate House Of Gucci. Denzel Washington made the Oscars five after yet another snubbing from BAFTA; why did this happen? Both David and the two mikes have thoughts. The Supporting categories were also full of drama with Dame Judi Dench picking up a nomination for her supporting role in Sir Kenneth Branghs film Belfast. No Caitriona Balfe or Ruth Negga though. The Supporting Actor categories are also fascinating with Jesse Plemmons getting his first Oscar nomination. What does this mean for Kodi-Smitt McPhee? Cannibalisation? David and the two mikes Discuss. Unanimous praise for Troy Kotsur who becomes only the second deaf actor to be nominated for an Oscar after trail blazing Marlee Matlin. Both Star in Best Picture Nominated CODA. Both Adapted and Original Screenplay categories get the Road To The Oscars deep dive. The worst Person in the world was a shock nomination here but Being the Ricardos Missed Original Screenplay although it had the Writers Guild Of America Nomination. As well as the major categories this show dives deep into the undercard and what it could mean for the Best Picture race. Is Dune just an undercard player? Or does it have Best Picture capability. Best International and Best Documentary feature are discussed, with Flee being nominated in both. No Time To Die heads up the field in Best Original song and Hans Zimmer goes head to head with Jonny Greenwood in Best Original Score. The Tragedy Of Macbeth lands a Cinematography nomination, in a fine year for this category.Spiderman: No Way Home lands a Best Visual Effects nomination, but can spidey swing to victory? Cruella looks the front runner in Best Costume Design but can Dune or West Side Story cause a surprise? both receive nominations. Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Make Up and Hairstyling are all discussed before the panel rounds off the show by listing and briefly discussing the nominees in Best Live Action Short, Best Animated Short and Best Documentary Short.

In this episode of the Roald Dahl Retrospective, Patricia, Arun, and special guest Eli "TheHeroofTomorrow" Stone discuss about the 2016 BBC two-part animated TV movie Revolting Rhymes based on the 1982 book of the same name starring Dominic West, Rob Brydon, Tamsin Greig, Rose Leslie, Gemma Chan, Bertie Carvel, David Wailliams, Isaac Hempsey Wright, and Bel Powley. The story adapts from Roald Dahl's interpretations of Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, The Three Little Pigs, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Cinderella. The plot focuses on a wolf wanting to get revenge on Little Red Riding Hood as she killed his nephews by eating her two young children. Revolting Rhymes was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short, but lost to Dear Basketball written and narrated by the late Los Angeles Lakers basketball player Kobe Bryant and animated by legendary Disney animator Glen Keane. It received mixed to positive reviews from critics calling it a short, charming film that captured the essence of Roald Dahl's stories, but not as memorable as the other animated adaptations. What do Patricia, Arun, and Eli think of the film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

A tin toy named Tinny is trying to get away from a destructive baby named Billy who would get toys and play with them to the point of breaking them. Tin Toy is considered to be one of the most important shorts in Pixar due to winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Short in 1988. It was also the precursor to Toy Story when Pixar wanted to do a full length film on Tin Toy, but had scrapped it. Tinny wouldn't be shown in a Toy Story film until his cameo appearance in Toy Story 4 over 20 years later. What do Arun and Patricia think of the short? Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/vMy1YU1bczE   James and Thomas discuss an animated classic, Walt Disney's Fantasia (1940), with Oscar-nominated animator and director Timothy Reckart ("Head Over Heels", The Star). Included in the conversation are some remarks touching upon Fantasia 2000 (1999). Both films are available for streaming on Disney+. Speaking about the film, Walt Disney said, “Fantasia is timeless. It may run ten, twenty, thirty years. Fantasia is an idea in itself. I can never build another. I can improve. I can elaborate. That is all." In this episode we discuss Fantasia's timelessness, investigating its groundbreaking developments in animation and sound, and its thematic concerns of hierarchy and social organization, as well as its occasional imperfections and pandering. Tim Reckart also reflects on the strengths and weaknesses of animation: What does it offer that live action doesn't?   Next on Criteria: the fourth installment of Dekalog, the 10-part miniseries directed by Polish auteur Krzysztof Kieślowski.   Links Tim Reckart's "Head Over Heels" (Academy Award Nominee, Best Animated Short) http://www.headoverheels.tv/  Walt Disney explains the multiplane camera https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdHTlUGN1zw Oscar Fischinger – An Optical Poem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Xc4g00FFLk Join our Facebook group if you wish to discuss these films with us! http://www.facebook.com/groups/CatholicPods If you like the show, please consider supporting us! http://catholicculture.org/donate/audio    Music is The Duskwhales, “Take It Back”, used with permission. https://theduskwhales.bandcamp.com/

This episode features Adam Ciolfi, a multiple award-winning stop motion animator who shares how to become successful as an independent filmmaker. You’ll also learn: *The reason Adam left the professional animation industry *How Adam’s created a life that sustains his independent filmmaking *What he’s learned from attending festivals all over the world More on Adam Ciolfi: Adam Ciolfi’s lifelong fascination with stop motion animation began in 1975 when at age ten he discovered the work of Ray Harryhausen (The 7th Voyage of Sinbad) In 1977 he attempted his first film with a lump of clay and a Regular 8 camera. By 1985 he and his siblings had produced 26 amateur short films. After earning a degree in film production from York University Adam embarked on his professional career. He completed his first professional production, the stop motion short ATTIC IN THE BLUE in 1991. It would win 4 awards for Best Animated Short during its festival run before being sold for broadcast. In 1996, after a series of live action shorts, he began work on a stop motion feature film. THE LADY OF NAMES (2011) would take 14 years to complete and go on to screen at over 60 festivals worldwide, winning the award for Best Animated Feature 9 times. He followed that up with the multi-award winning and critically acclaimed shorts BROKEN (2014) and HIVE (2016) FILTH (2019) marks his third short in six years and the most successful film of his career so far. Currently he is hard at work on his next animated short, FROM HELL HE RIDES, a loving tribute to the spaghetti westerns of the 1060’s. *Follow Adam on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ciolfianimation?lang=en *Check out Adam’s website: https://adamciolfi.wordpress.com/ *Check out Adam’s films on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-IGdAjPqeAfnAS86M-ZmRQ

He’s also accomplished in writing, photographing, and DJing, hailing from a career as a multimedia creative and journalist during his time at Complex. For The Dropcast’s 100th episode, Jinx shares thoughtful reflections on the state of culture from streetwear to Black History Month, and of course, this week’s hottest drops. After a quick but heavy roasting of Philipp Plein’s show which was accused of monetizing on the passing of Kobe Bryant, the quick hits take us into more Milan Fashion Week news. During a top secret press conference earlier this week, Raf Simons was officially confirmed as Co-Creative Director of Prada after a lengthy period of public speculation (3:58). On the topic of things that people will really want, Denim Tears has teamed up with Procell once again on a special T-shirt for the annual honoring of his mother’s passing, and all proceeds go towards the Every Mother Counts charity (5:14). Equally worth the anticipation is the red velvet pecan cake made from a recipe by Tremaine Emory’s late mother. This time, the cake is extra special, coming out in a box designed by Tom Sachs. Another new collab that’s telling a story is the Palace x adidas golf collection, which marks the former’s move into performance wear (9:26). Jian notes how there’s a cross-section between guys who chase the hype and hard core golfers while Jinx comments on the saturation of fashion into all the corners of life and culture. This takes the cast into an animated discussion about the intersection of sports, fashion, and what it takes to introduce style to the court and field. AWAKE alumni John Lopez has stepped into the playing field with his first drop of Ineverheardofyou, an independent venture featuring provocative customized Jordan 1s and a text-heavy trucker hat (14:20). Jinx taps into the ingenuity behind such a collection and its value for an up-and-coming brand. As February wraps up, Jinx reflects on the most memorable Black History Month moments including Matthew A. When a man receives a promotion and a raise, he finds himself forced to face an uncomfortable situation that he has avoided all his life: visiting a bank and opening a bank account. “My Financial Career” is representative of author Stephen Leacock’s writing style in which he pokes fun at social absurdities and irrational behaviour. This short story was adapted into a short animated film in 1962, directed by Gerald Potterton. The film won the award for Best Animated Short at the San Francisco International Film Festival that year and was nominated for Best Animated Short at the 36th Academy Awards in 1964. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hmphaudiobooks/support

The All-Star has a some soreness in his left knee.  The Oscars had a bit of an NBA tilt to them last night, as in addition to Kobe Bryant winning for Best Animated Short, Celtics fans got some insight into how Irving found out about his trade last summer while on the set of his upcoming film, Uncle Drew. Wallace & Gromit and Friends and their talented creators have just arrived at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Aardman Animations. Running until October 29 this latest of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces is a virtually exhaustive exhibition of the company's entire body of work, including their next feature film, Early Man, coming out early next year. Visiting Aardman founders and co-curators, Peter Lord and David Sproxton, working very closely with ACMI head curator Fiona Trigg and the Art Ludique museum in Paris, have delivered a generous serving of early sketches, concept art, original models, plasticine sets and, of course, the plasticine characters themselves! I was fortunate enough to hear Peter and David's brilliant introduction to the exhibition and to chat to Fiona about what it was like to put it all together. All the favourites are there of course: there’s plenty to see of the famous bumbling inventor and his long-suffering dog, some very cute scenes from Shaun the Sheep and a few memorable set pieces from Chicken Run, but many visitors are likely to be surprised by just how many “friends” Wallace & Gromit actually have at Aardman, a company who also did scores of other shorts, commercials, music videos, and even other features films that never got quite as much attention as their first two. It’s easy to forget that their first Academy Award was for Nick Park’s Creature Comforts, the delightful zoo mockumentary that actually beat A Grand Day Out for Best Animated Short in 1989. Just as they’ve been making children’s films that adults can also get into, they’ve also produced some more adult-oriented works that kids are still drawn to because of the animation. As Fiona said during the launch of the exhibition, Claymation has a particular playful and tactile feel to it, a warmth that comes from its refreshing simplicity. Its animators basically get to play around with their favourite toys in front of a camera and make their little creations feel as real to the audience as they to do them. At the media preview I attended, I was very happy, but not really surprised, to see the adults having just as much fun as the tiny kids who also got to go. The wide-eyed children were thrilled to see things like Wallace's vegetable garden, the flying machine from Chicken Run and the massive pirate ship in the back room, right there in the flesh, while the adults were marvelling at the witty details the Aardman animators sneak into these worlds they create. I suppose that Aardman, like Disney, is usually associated with light, cheerful family entertainment, mostly because their animation style is colourful, quirky and humorous, the characters are likeable and most of their films have happy endings. For adults, this might be the overall impression, but certainly for a child these films really make you work for those moments of happiness. Many of their iconic darker scenes feature in the exhibition as well, including the chicken pie machine, Gromit's heartbreaking night in jail, and of course, Feathers McGraw, the evil penguin from A Close Shave. It was also great to see some of the best comic characters from Curse of the Were-Rabbit, the CGI-animated Flushed Away and their most recent feature, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, who’ve been voiced by such British stars as Hugh Grant and Kate Winslet, actors that any directors would be thrilled to work with, although it looks like they were even more excited to be lending their voices to such classic stories and characters. Wallace & Gromit and Friends is a wondrous exploration of all of Aardman’s many creations and the breadth of talent behind them, bringing its visitors into the worlds of the fan favourites, introducing them to some of their more obscure works and getting them extra excited for the next adventure. Today's Guest: Geefwee Boedoe, documentary film director, Let's Pollute Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of whiny consumers sitting through this interview just long enough to see what free stuff Oprah is going to hand out… in the new new media capitol of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Scene from 'Let's Pollute' by Geefwee Boedoe[/caption] Apparently, Geefwee Boedoe watched a lot of filmstrips back in elementary school. You know the kind I’m talking about. The ones that broke down every complicated issue from understanding the Constitution to what a molecule is and could explain away any topic in about six minutes with simplistic animation and catchy but somewhat silly musical jingles. This young director learned his lessons well, turning the medium upside-down and inside-out for his 2010 Academy Award-nominated Best Animated Short, Let’s Pollute. GEEFWEE BOEDOE podcast excerpt: "For me, Let's Pollute was a personal thing. I had a whole list of other ideas, but this one rose to the top. It seemed more timely." Boedoe attacks rampant consumerism, waste and the related politics with a seemingly gentle nature that disguises a vicious attack on modern attitudes in our throw-away society. Waste not, want not? Oh, no! “Waste it! Want it!” is the tongue in toxic chic message of Let’s Pollute. Just like in nature you can’t force a tree to grow, you can’t force children to be who they are not meant to be. Surrendering ego and letting go allows amazing things to unfold in the life of the child . . . as well as the parent.Adults struggle to find their purpose and live the life they want to present to the world: mind, body and spirit all illuminated to shine onto others while shining bright inside yourself and your home.Bringing this awareness to children so they won’t need to face the same challenges you have is the greatest gift you can give to your child. Singer-Songwriter and author Nancy Geittier finds inspiration in each of her children to write entertaining and educational stories. Whimsical and fun, each of her children's books have a holistic approach with educational twists. Nancy has produced an award-winning short film based on Mermaids on Mars complete with her original songs. It has been invited to and won various film festivals including Best Animated Short at the Carmel International Film Festival, Best Animation at the LA Underground Film Festival, LA Children's Film Festival and others.  This will likely inspire a full-length film and a TV series, according to the author.

Chris and Joe kick off this episode by talking about the Oscar nominees for Best Animated Short, which was really timely and topical when they recorded it but is old news now since Chris couldn’t be bothered to edit and upload this thing in time. Thankfully, lots of comics are discussed afterwards, including Snowpiercer, Celebrated Summer, Judge Dredd, Cannon (briefly) and Satellite Sam. So it’s not a total loss.
