It was dedicated to the late Virgil Abloh, the label's visionary creative director, who died of cancer in November 2021 at just 41. Covid-19 meant programming was a little lighter than usual, but a host of young labels also managed to put on shows: EgonLab, Georges Wendell and Lukhanyo Mdingi made a particularly good impression, while Kim Jones at Dior Homme put on one of the most beautiful shows of his career. Hairdressing Icon, Sam McKnight.This episode was an absolute joy for me as it is one of my absolute hair heroes, Sam McKnight.Celebrated session hair stylist, Sam McKnight, is the hairdresser's hairdresser. He boasts a legendary career spanning over four decades encompassing catwalk, editorial and advertising campaigns for fashion houses such as Chanel, Fendi, Balmain, Burberry and Tom Ford. A regular contributor to both British and international Vogues, W, Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, i-D and Love, he has over 100 covers to his name from British Vogue alone. McKnight is also a Contributing Beauty Editor at British Vogue. McKnight has collaborated with some of the world's most prominent photographers including Patrick Demarchelier, Mario Testino and Nick Knight. A long-time stylist for the late Princess Diana, McKnight was the creative behind her iconic short, slicked back hairstyle in the now-famous 1990 Demarchelier shoot for British Vogue, a partnership that led to him becoming her personal hair stylist for seven years.One of the original session stylists, McKnight initially trained as a teacher before working as an assistant at a local hairdresser in his native Scotland. Moving to London in the early 1970's, McKnight secured a position at Molton Brown, which at the time was a leading hair salon in London's South Molton Street. He worked on projects for London-based magazines 19 and Honey before landing his first editorial shoot with British Vogue in 1977. While working in London, he was introduced to stylists Liz Tilberis (later editor of British Vogue and Harpers Bazaar US) and Lucinda Chambers (British Vogue), who were instrumental in hiring him for high-profile editorial shoots.McKnight has been bestowed the Lifetime Achievement Award at both the Scottish Fashion Awards and Creative Head Awards 2015. He is hugely respected within the hairdressing community and is often cited as a source of inspiration or named as ‘the hairstylist I would most like to work with' by his peers.On November 2nd 2016, Somerset House launched Hair by Sam McKnight, a major exhibition celebrating McKnight's impressive career. Never before has an exhibition of this kind taken place, looking at hair from a new perspective and celebrating the significant role of session hair styling in both fashion and culture throughout the decades.In tandem, McKnight also released his first book: Hair by Sam McKnight (Rizzoli), a hardback anthology of his magazine covers, editorial shoots and personal insights into working at the heart of the fashion industry.June 2017 saw McKnight launch a brand: Hair by Sam McKnight, in Liberty of London, injecting fashion, glamour and ease into haircare and styling. The rise of Brian Phillips, the President of Black Frame, to the top echelons of the fashion industry, is both well-known and impressive.  Instead of working his way up through the ranks of PR companies he founded Black Frame after having made fashion inroads at the cult magazine Visionaire straight out of college, worked at the now defunct production company Fatal Art Syndicate, and built up a close knit group of friends who just happened to work in the fashion industry. Friends that including Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, the duo behind Opening Ceremony (which Brian helped promote from the start) and who also are also now designing Kenzo – a deal that Brian was instrumental in brokering for the duo. But, perhaps the most mythic fashion war story from Brian’s early career years happened when, while he was in-between jobs, Hedi Slimane came knocking. Brain had worked with the iconic designer on a project a year earlier, the results of which apparently stuck in Slimane’s brain. When Slimane reached out to Brian again, he just happened to be the creative director of Dior Homme. After a meeting with Sidney Toledano, the then CEO of Christian Dior at that time, Brian had a deal with the brand. Thus, at the tender age of 24 Brian launched Black Frame. His first two clients.... Dior Homme and Visionaire. Since then he has nurtured the creative careers of designers and brands like Rodate, Delfina Delettrez, Helmut Lang, Eckhaus Latta, Woolrich, Dion Lee and Nike. Launched a sister company called Framework that focuses on “developing concepts for innovative brand experiences” and more recently became the creative director of the cult biannual publication Garage Magazine. I have known Brian for many years and what strikes you about him, besides the breadth and width of his cultural knowledge, is his no BS way of doing business. In an industry where schmoozing and sucking up has become almost an art form Brian doesn’t suffer fools or is looking for acolytes. He is all business, pretty much all the time. You better bring you’re A-game and offer up an interesting challenge if you want to get his attention. And Brian is a pretty interesting guy in his own right. I promise that if you can bear with the background hum of the air conditioning fan in this interview, that finally shuts down at about the 4-minute mark of our conversation, you will be rewarded with an insightful and informative discussion in which Brian really lays out his business philosophy and creative strategy. Honestly, I just asked my questions, sat back and let Brian run with it.

Success is almost never a straight path. In fact, the things we think we want - money, fame, power - are rarely the things that actually make us happy. Today’s guest, Betsy Pearce, hailed as as one of the most powerful people in fashion, has been the legal deal-maker for top fashion icons like Carolina Herrera and Alexander McQueen, the creative directors for Bottega Veneta, Nina Ricci, and Dior Homme and more. When it comes to the types of high-stakes negotiations she deals with, she says the biggest mistake people make is thinking that it’s just about the money. It’s usually not about the money, it’s about proving someone wrong. Ego, emotion, loneliness, or rejection all play a part. As such, she wants us to get comfortable with the idea that sometimes, we don’t know what we don’t know. We learn by taking steps, and when we realize they aren’t the right ones, it’s okay to ask for help. Studies have shown that happiness often stems from a sense of community and being needed. However, there is no reason for us to wait for people to need us. It’s okay to ask for help when we need it, and to offer help to those around us. Courage is the ability to open up about what you you really need to get where you want to go. Happiness comes from realizing that the journey itself doesn’t need to be taken alone. David Beckham (1975-) är inte bara en av världens mest berömda fotbollsspelare, han är också ett globalt varumärke. Väl medveten om att karriären som sportstjärna på elitnivå är kort har han medvetet mejslat fram David Beckham till att idag symbolisera ett internationellt gångbart varumärke som sträcker sig långt utanför sportens gränser. Hans vältränade kropp säljer kalsonger, klockor, läsk, solglasögon, mobiltelefoner och parfymer. Än så länge. Vad väntar nu, när han slutat att aktivt spela fotboll? I veckans STIL tittar vi närmare på denne brittiske fotbollsspelare som med sin stil förändrat - ja, förbättrat- synen på hur moderna män av idag kan klä sig och bete sig - och inte minst frisera och tatuera sig. David Beckhams stil är för övrigt mycket framgångsrik stil, kan tilläggas. Den har hittills resulterat i en personlig förmögenhet på 1,8 miljarder kronor, enligt tidningen Sunday Times Rich List.  Och förmögenheten kommer knappast att minska i framtiden, tvärtom. I programmet berättar vi mer om hans liv, karriär och äktenskap med Victoria Beckham, förstås. Hon är en viktig del i hans varumärkesbyggande som i mångt och mycket kretsar kring livsstil. I likhet med många andra sportstjärnor började David Beckham sin professionella modekarriär med kalsonger. 2008 poserade han för Emporio Armani. Bilderna på Beckham i kalsonger fördubblade företagets omsättning, vilket ledde till idén att själv skapa underkläder. Det är det som vi idag kan se i hans samarbete med H&M. Men det finns sportstjärnor som vågat sig på kläder av annan sort. Sedan tjugo år tillbaka har till exempel den svenske före detta fotbollsspelaren Martin Dahlin sålt skjortor, skor och pikétröjor. Honom har vi träffat och pratat kläder med.  David Beckham har också alltid varit en garanti för fotbollsklubbarnas tröjförsäljning. Manchester United och Real Madrid och toppar alltid listan över klubblagen som säljer flest lagtröjor. Stora sportvarumärken som Adidas, Puma och Nike konkurrerar och förhandlar hårt med klubbarna om att få bli just deras samarbetspartners. Det är med andra ord ingen tillfällighet att just dessa sportvarumärken ofta blir utsatta för piratkopiering. I programmet har vi kollat in en ny bok i vilken man samlat förvrängda och fejkade varianter av varumärken. David Beckham är dessutom den förste man som ensam fått pryda omslaget av modetidningar för kvinnor – helt utan kvinnligt modellsällskap, som annars alltid är fallet.  2002 dök han upp på brittiska Marie Claire och förra året syntes han på omslaget till brittiska Elles julinummer. På bilden ser man honom kliva upp ur en swimmingpool, klädd i genomdränkta svarta jeans från Dior Homme med det tatuerade bara bröstet glittrande av vattendroppar. Håret är bakåtkammat och blicken fäst rakt in i kameran. Han ser ut som en väldigt målmedveten och modern James Bond. Varför skildras inte fler kvinnor så? Vi har träffat Lisa Hågeby som skapat en websajt med rubriken Stop Female Death In Advertising  (stopfemaledeathinadvertising.com) som sitt examensarbete från Beckmans Designhögskola. Där har hon samlat reklambilder på kvinnor som ser livlösa ut, utslängda på sängar och liggandes med slutna ögon i vatten.  Veckans gäst är Simon Bank, sportjournalist på Aftonbladet

Hedi Slimane – ska modevärldens svarta får höja eller sänka Yves Saint Laurent?

Förra veckan debuterade Hedi Slimane (1968-) som chefsdesigner för det franska modehuset Yves Saint Laurent. Förväntningarna var höga och förvirringen stor. Var det ett steg framåt? Eller var det bakåt? Och vad menar han med att döpa om modehuset? Att stryka namnet Yves och bara ha kvar Saint Laurent? Och var det verkligen så smart att kasta dynga på recensenter, via twitter? I veckans STIL synar vi en av modevärldens största, och hemligaste, stjärnor närmare i sömmarna. Hedi Slimame har tidigare arbetat som designer av herrkläder, först för Yves Saint Laurent och senare som chefsdesigner för Dior Homme där han 2001 lanserade den slimmade silhuetten för män. Den fick inte bara modeskaparen Karl Lagerfeld att banta ned sig 40 kilo för att kunna klämma in sig i hans tajta och kroppsnära kostymer. En look som han – och många andra – fortfarande håller sig till. Man skulle faktiskt kunna påstå att Hedi Slimanes slimmade stil fick samma breda genomslag för dagens män, som Christian Diors ”New Look” fick för kvinnor i slutet av 40-talet. För idag klär sig de flesta män, åtminstone yngre, i en långt smalare stil än förr. 2007 lämnade Hedi Slimane Paris och modebranschen för att istället flytta till Los Angeles, där han bland annat ägnat sig åt att fotografera. Men nu är han tillbaka i modevärlden igen och nyfikenheten på vad som ska ske i framtiden är stor. För i modevärlden pågår just nu ett slags tronskifte. Inte bara Yves Saint Laurent har bytt designer. Det har även Dior gjort. Det innebär att två av världens allra största och mäktigaste modehus (som ägs av de två jättelika stora och konkurrerande franska modekonglomeraten LVMH och PPR) håller på att staka ut nya vägar inför framtiden. På Dior – som är LVMH:s kronjuvel och ägs av mångmiljardären Bernard Arnault – har designern Raf Simons tagit över efter John Galliano som åkte ut med öronen före, efter att ha slängt ur sig antisemitiska uttalanden på fyllan i en bar i Paris. Och på Yves Saint Laurent – som är en skattkista för PPR (som drivs av François-Henri Pinault) har den forne designern Stefano Pilati fått sparken efter tio år och ersatts av Hedi Slimane. Båda är 44 år, har liknande estetik, smak och bakgrund som herrdesigner. Båda betraktas som en sorts ultrabegåvade underbarn i branschen. Fast om Raf Simons kan beskrivas som det snälla vita fåret, kan Hedi Slimane med lätthet kallas det stökiga svarta. Han har redan ställt till med rabalder genom att kalla New York Times modekritiker Cathy Horyn för ”skolgårdsmobbare”.
