The most powerful Ford F-150 pickup truck ever built has just gone on sale poised to go head-to-head with the current hottest truck on the planet — the Ram 1500 TRX. So how does the newest member of the Ford F-150 Raptor lineup compare to the vehicle that claims to be the apex predator of all trucks? The duel between these two incredibly capable trucks promises to be one of the most intense in history. Who will win bragging rights? And how will they keep them? This episode was so popular that we are repeating it now over Labor Day weekend. We'll have some answers for you about the two killer trucks in this edition of “America on the Road.” And we'll have an all-new episode for you next week when we take a first look at the all-new 2023 Lexus RX luxury crossover. In the road test segment, Co-host Chris Teague will draw on his inner billionaire as he puts the Mercedes-Benz S 580 sedan through its paces. Many reviewers think the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the best sedan in the world. Others opine that the new electric cars like the Lucid Air, Porsche Taycan, and Mercedes-Benz EQS make the S-Class feel old-fashioned. Are they right? We'll find out what Chris Teague and Host Jack Nerad think about M-B's traditional take on the full-size luxury sedan in this installment. Across the United States, Jack Nerad road tested a vehicle that puts an EV within reach of millions of car buyers. The battery-electric Chevrolet Bolt EV has been heavily revised for the model year and Nerad will offer his reaction. One big piece of news revolving around the car is a giant price drop. The question is, does the lower price make the Bolt EV a great value? And how does it compare to the closely related Chevrolet Bolt EUV small crossover? Nerad and Teague will deliver their thoughts on that and much more. Buying a new car continues to be a struggle as we roll toward Labor Day. Our special guest might be able to help. Host Jack Nerad will sit down for a lengthy interview with Mike Darrow, CEO and President of TrueCar. His company is in the process of launching a new initiative that is designed to make car buying much easier, and we'll have details. So stick around for that. In the news, an iconic car model has just celebrated its fiftieth birthday. The Honda Civic was introduced five decades ago and it is now in its eleventh generation. More than 12.3 million Civics have been sold in the U.S. since its debut here in 1973. So we stroll down memory lane, reminiscing about Civics of old and talk about the all-new 2023 Honda Civic Type R in this episode.

Entry-level means different things to different people. For some, an entry-level new vehicle is like Ford's Maverick or the Mitsubishi Mirage: affordable, reasonable and, generally, plentiful. Though every model from every automaker has an entry point, and some of those or better equipped than others. For the top Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan, it's the S500: a six-cylinder powered sedan that's a great platform for the folks at Maybach to work their magic. Well, even the lowly S500 doesn't skimp on comfort or luxury. Powered by the aforementioned six-cylinder, which displaces 3.0-liters while generating 429 hp. That power travels through a nine-speed automatic before hitting the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. While the base S500 doesn't sport the wild hyper screen, the Mercedes S-Class interior is more than posh enough to keep your in-laws happy. In this episode of Quick Spin, Wesley Wren puts the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S500 through its paces. Wren walks you around the S500 while showing off some of its features, and highlights its interior. After that, Wren takes you along for a live drive review. Between those segments, Mark Vaughn joins to share his experience with the latest S-Class, and chat with Wren. Vaughn and Wren discuss some of their favorite and least favorite, parts of the S500. The two also give the lay of the land for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class lineup. Closing the show, the two explain what makes this S500 special.
A South Georgia pastor, mortician, restaurateur, and tax preparer has been indicted on COVID-19 recovery assistance fraud by a federal grand jury in the Southern District of Georgia.Mack Devon Knight, 45, of Kingsland, Ga., is charged in a five-count indictment that accuses Knight of lying to the Small Business Administration (SBA) in connection with applications for Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs), according to David H. Estes, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. The charges carry a statutory penalty upon conviction of up to 30 years in prison, along with substantial financial penalties, followed by a period of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.“Funding from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Security (CARES) Act was provided to help small businesses survive pandemic-related losses,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Estes. “In coordination with our law enforcement partners, we will hold accountable those unscrupulous actors who attempt to swindle these funds for their own enrichment.” As described in the indictment, in February and March 2021, Knight applied for EIDLs on behalf of two Camden County, Ga., businesses: Knight's Tax Services, and Daddy Earl's Kitchen. Those EIDL applications falsely affirmed that the businesses each had hundreds of thousands of dollars of gross revenue prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The indictment alleges that Knight then made and transmitted to the SBA a falsified bank document to deceive the SBA into approving one of Knight's EIDL applications. The indictment further alleges that, after receiving $149,900 from the SBA as a result of false and fraudulent representations in Knight's loan application on behalf of Knight's Tax Services, Knight used part of the funds to buy a Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been THE standard for luxury cars since the 70's, as well as providing earthly transportation for various dictators, heads of state, and despotic rulers. But which S-Class should you buy if you happen to be in the market? Steve, Adam, and guest-host Chet will hash it out this week as we find the Best in Class.

MERCEDES LAUNCHES EQB - THIRD ELECTRIC MODEL THIS YEAR "Mercedes is ramping up its assault on the battery-car market with the launch of the new EQB sport-utility vehicle at the Shanghai Auto Show. Available with up to seven seats, the EQB debuts barely a week after the automaker unveiled its all-electric flagship, the EQS, the latter to serve as the battery-powered alternative to the classic Mercedes-Benz S-Class" reports The Detroit Bureau: " the Mercedes EQB’s dimensions are nearly identical to those of the conventional GLB crossover. But, like the rest of the new Mercedes EQ family, the new model mounts batteries, motors and other key electrical components below the load floor in a skateboard-like platform. The new model also integrates what Mercedes calls “Navigation with Electric Intelligence” which, it says, “contributes to the effortless handling of the EQB in everyday life. It calculates the fastest route to the destination, taking into account maximum charging power and the duration of possible charging stops." https://www.thedetroitbureau.com/2021/04/with-eqc-mercedes-launches-third-all-electric-model-this-year/ "Due to go on sale in Europe and China later this year, the EQB will make its way stateside in 2022, targeting a group of competitors that seems to expand with each passing season. Just like the recently-revealed EQA, the EQB trades the grille of its gas-engined sibling for a nose cone with a glass finish" says Autoweek: "When it comes to the drivetrain, the EQB will be offered with all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive, at least in Europe. When it goes on sale there later this year the electric SUV will draw juice from a 66.5-kWh battery, giving it 268 hp in the 4Matic version and a range of about 260 miles in the WLTP cycle." https://www.autoweek.com/news/green-cars/a36174507/mercedes-benz-eqb-debuts-in-shanghai-but-well-have-to-wait-for-it/ GM & LG ENERGY COMMIT TO SECOND BATTERY FACTORY IN TENNESSEE "General Motors is expanding its battery-building base. Ultium Cells LLC, a joint venture company owned by GM and LG Energy Solution, announced April 16 that it will construct a second plant for manufacturing electric vehicle batteries. GM says the new, 2.8-million-square-foot plant will cost $2.3 billion and create 1,300 new manufacturing jobs." according to Industry Week: "The new factory will be located in Spring Hill, Tennessee, where it will supply General Motors’ nearby Spring Hill assembly plant, which GM said last October would transition to produce electric-only vehicles like the latest Cadillac models. GM and LG first announced the battery joint venture Ultium in 2019, when it announced the construction of a $2.3 billion battery R&D center and factory in Lordstown, Ohio. That location is slated to become operational sometime in 2022." https://www.industryweek.com/leadership/growth-strategies/article/21161492/gm-lg-announce-new-23-billion-tennessee-ev-battery-plant POLESTAR 1 SPECIAL EDITION "The Polestar 1 gets a limited-run special edition that wears a whole lot of gold in China. The company is making just 25 of them, and production begins later in the year. These cars wear a matte gold body, including the badges. The colour also shows up on the brake callipers. There are gloss black elements in the grille and portions of the lower fascia. Big black wheels fill the wings/fenders." says Motor1: "The Polestar 1 packs a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder with two electric motors. This setup makes 611 bhp and 738 pound-feet, which is enough for the coupe to reach 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds. The WLTP rating indicates the car can cover 77 miles purely on electric power." https://uk.motor1.com/news/502108/polestar-1-special-edition-gold/ KIA RECEIVES OVER 1,000 EV6 PRE-ORDERS IN UK ALONE "The British division of Kia announced that to date (April 19), the company has received more than 1,000 pre-reservations for the all-new EV6 model in the UK. That's a significant number, considering just a single country. Together with other countries, Europe might turn out to be a bigger market for the EV6 than South Korea, where Kia received over 21,000 reservations on the first day." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "The pre-reservation window, with £100 refundable deposit (€100 in most of Europe) will end on April 30. The first EV6 and EV6 GT-line will arrive in the UK in October 2021. The prices in the UK are: EV6: from £40,895" https://insideevs.com/news/502052/kia-ev6-1000-preorders-uk/ BMW IX MAKES ITS WORLD DEBUT AT SHANGHAI SHOW "As part of show-and-tell day at the 2021 Shanghai auto show, BMW was on hand to roll out in person the upcoming iX all-electric SUV for the world to see." says auto123.com: "The BMW iX is noteworthy for a number of reasons, starting of course with its all-electric powertrain. But the model is also the first BMw to get the automaker’s brand-new Operating System 8 and the latest edition of the iDrive system. The future flagship model for BMW’s elctric division is constructed on the latest, 5th generation BMW eDrive platform, also tabbed for use with the iX3 and i4 models we’ve seen previewed in recent months. Eventually, nine EVs will replace regular vehicles used by the State Highways division, with another 34 expected to be delivered to DOT by the end of May." says the Hawaii Star Advertiser: "Under the 10-year service contract, state and county agencies do not have to purchase EVs upfront, but can procure them, as well as the necessary charging infrastructure, on a per-mile cost basis." https://www.staradvertiser.com/2021/04/14/breaking-news/hawaii-department-of-transportation-begins-electrification-with-tesla-delivery/ VOLKSWAGEN EXPANDS ID. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA TO GAIN ACCESS TO 400K MORE $7K EV TAX CREDITS "Another 400,000 Teslas sold in the United States are poised to receive a tax credit worth $7,000, thanks to a bill from the Biden administration. The bill, called the Growing Renewable Energy and Efficiency Now (GREEN) Act, features a number of programs aimed at incentivizing sustainable technologies. " says TEslrati: "Under the GREEN Act, the electric vehicle credit cap for automakers would be increased to 600,000 cars, though the tax credit becomes $7,000 per vehicle after the first 200,000 EVs are sold. Considering that Tesla and GM have already passed the 200,000-vehicle threshold, 400,000 more customers in the United States would receive a tax credit of $7,000. This should make Tesla’s electric cars far more attainable, with the Model 3 essentially being priced below $30,000 with the tax credit in place." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-400k-7k-tax-credit-approved/ FORD BETS $29B ON LEADING THE 'ELECTRIC VEHICLE REVOLUTION' "Ford CEO Jim Farley said on the company's Q4 earnings call last week that it will invest $29 billion in autonomous vehicles (AVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) through 2025, a dramatic ramp-up of its spending in those areas." says Smart Cities Dive: "Farley said the company will take a "more aggressive" approach toward automation and electrification, having previously pledged to spend $11.5 billion on electrification through 2022. The company's CEO said this new $22 billion commitment on electrification alone will help it be "a leader in the electric vehicle revolution around the world." With a slew of partnerships and other ventures, Farley said Ford is also positioning itself to have its commercial AV business in operation by 2022, thanks in large part to artificial intelligence (AI) firm Argo AI, in which Ford invested $1 billion in 2017." https://www.smartcitiesdive.com/news/ford-bets-29b-on-leading-the-electric-vehicle-revolution/ FORD TO BUILD ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN COLOGNE "Ford has decided to build its first purely electric small car at the Fiesta plant in Cologne. According to industry insiders informing a media report, the US carmaker is also moving away from planned hybrid cars in favour of electric models." reports Chris Randall at electrive: "The decision is to be officially announced next week at a digital press conference. There were already corresponding rumours several months ago: At the end of November, several media sources reported that not only the development of Ford’s future MEB-based BEV would take place in Cologne-Merkenich, but also included the production. The report asserted that in addition to Cologne, Saarlouis, which lies a good 200 kilometres to the south, and the Romanian plant in Craiowa were in the running as production locations. The plan is to bring the MEB battery-electric vehicle to market in 2023. The current report in Automobilwoche also reveals that Ford wants to say goodbye to pure combustion models faster than previously planned and has also decided to cancel already planned hybrid models in favour of pure electric vehicle models. So far, Ford is building the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV in Mexico and expanding the Michigan plant for the production of an electric F-150 from 2022. The E-Transit is to be built in Missouri from the end of 2021" https://www.electrive.com/2021/02/10/ford-to-build-electric-vehicles-in-cologne/ TAYCAN CROSS TURISMO DEBUTS IN LESS THAN 2 MONTHS AND HITS DEALERSHIPS THIS SUMMER A Tweet from F1 drier Mark Webber. The Taycan Cross Turismo is coming. As the motoring world awaits the global premiere of the all-electric Cross Utility Vehicle, Porsche Brand Ambassador @aussiegrit has been behind the wheel of a development car. Here's what he said: “Phenomenal first drive for me with this beauty. Drives like a Porsche, feels like a Porsche, smells like a Porsche. It's a proper sports car with even more space and ground clearance now. Expect the World Premiere of the all-new Taycan Cross Turismo to take place in less than eight weeks. In dealerships as early as this summer. I can't wait. It's the perfect car for the Australian outback and the German Autobahn.” https://www.taycanforum.com/forum/threads/official-taycan-cross-turismo-debuts-in-less-than-2-months-and-hits-dealerships-this-summer.3855/ LUCID CEO SAYS AUTOMAKER IS AHEAD IN TECH RACE "[Lucid Motors CEO Peter Rawlinson] told CNBC that his company is where Tesla used to be ten years ago: ahead of the curve in the tech race. In other words, ahead of Tesla as well. Rawlinson said that when he was answering a question from Jim Cramer. The TV presenter had just made a reservation for the Lucid Air Dream Edition – which costs $161,500 – and asked why anyone would pay way more for a Lucid Air than they could pay for a similar Tesla Model S." according to INsideEVs: "the Lucid CEO answered that he does not think Tesla is a competitor when it comes to the product. The Lucid Air would compete with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, not with the Model S. When it relates to technology, people could argue that the highest range indicates the best car. Rawlinson disputes that. According to the Lucid CEO, be the best way to measure technological refinement would be energy efficiency, and the Air can make more than 4.5 miles per kWh. The Tesla Model S would achieve 4 miles per kWh." https://insideevs.com/news/486938/lucid-ahead-competition-tech-race-rawlinson/ LUCID MOTORS REVEALS EUROPEAN DELIVERIES IN H1 2022 A Twitter conversation from Feb 6th: Håvard Holen When can I expect to see the Lucid Air in Norway? @Lucid Motors European deliveries will begin in late 2021. However a Lucid spokesperson said: "Lucid Motors will start customer deliveries in Europe in the first half of 2022. The recent social media response of ‘late 2021’ is inaccurate, but all future communications will reflect the correct timing." KIA'S DEDICATED ELECTRIC CARS WILL BE NAMED EV1-EV9 "Kia announced today that its dedicated electric cars, based on the E-GMP platform, will be named EV1∼EV9. That mirrors the naming strategy of the sister brand - Hyundai, which decided to name the new models: Ioniq 1- Ioniq 9. The first will be the Hyundai Ioniq 5." says InsideEVs. What do we know of the CV? : "Next month (March 2021), Kia intends to present its first E-GMP-based model (including details and performance specifications), known under the code-name "CV."This all-new, dedicated electric Kia model will be launched in July 2021. The Kia CV will have a range of more than 500 km (311 miles) in an undisclosed test cycle, ultra-fast charging capability (replenishing 100 km/62 miles of range in 4 minutes), and very strong acceleration: 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3 seconds." Kia expect the profit margins of their EVs to match their ICE cars in 2025. https://insideevs.com/news/486851/kia-cv-500-km-range-3-seconds/ GENESIS GV60 SPIED WITH KIA CV, HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 "spy teams came upon Hyundai exercising several electric prototypes from its family brands Kia and Genesis, not to mention the automaker's own forthcoming EV offering, the Ioniq 5. By the time the camera shutters fell silent, close to 60 photos showing exteriors and interiors were snapped." reports Christopher Smith at Motor1: "the photographer managed to get close enough for some interior shots. While much is still covered, it's not hard to see the large digital screen that connects the instrument readouts to the infotainment system. We also see some tactile buttons and knobs below the center screen, so Kia's EV crossover won't have a completely clean greenhouse. Winter testing for these electric crossovers is obviously in full swing, and from our vantage point these prototypes look production-ready. There's a good reason for that – we already know that Kia's offering will debut in March, and the upscale Genesis GV60 is also expected to debut around the same time. However, Hyundai will beat them all with the Ioniq 5, which is slated to happen in mid-February." https://www.motor1.com/news/487206/genesis-gv60-kia-c7-ioniq5-spy ŠKODA AUTO PRODUCES 100,000TH BATTERY Today, ŠKODA AUTO manufactured its 100,000th high-voltage traction battery. In order to create the necessary production conditions at the company’s headquarters in Mladá Boleslav, the Czech carmaker invested approximately 25.3 million euros in 2019. An area covering roughly 2,000 m² is now used not only to produce high-voltage traction batteries for the company’s own plug-in hybrid models, but also batteries for plug-in hybrids from the group brands AUDI, SEAT and Volkswagen. Christian Bleiel, Head of Component Production at ŠKODA AUTO, said: “We have now reached the mark of 100,000 high-voltage traction batteries produced. This success is a great testament to our team’s high level of engineering expertise as well as the importance of our component production within the group: our batteries are not just used in the ŠKODA Superb iV and the Octavia iV, they are also fitted in plug-in hybrids from the AUDI, SEAT and Volkswagen brands. We currently manufacture almost 800 batteries per day.” NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK Regardless of tech or specs, who do you think is designing the best looking EV, and why? Can be any shape or size. In this episode of America on the Road hosts Jack Nerad and Chris Teague road test the Genesis G90 luxury sedan and the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 specialty coupe. The GLC Coupe is part crossover SUV, part sport coupe. If offers the sweptback roofline of a coupe in a tall, crossover chassis, providing either the best or worst of both vehicle types depending upon how you look at it and what your needs are. The Genesis G90 is much more straightforward. It's a large luxury coupe that competes with the BMW 7 Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Our test version was the 5.0 Ultimate AWD version of the car, extremely adept at making miles disappear effortlessly. Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 Coupe slideshow In the interview portion of this episode, Jack Nerad speaks with Gina Callari of RelayCars about her company's effort to provide consumers with new, high-tech ways to experience vehicles virtually. The technology is especially apt in these days when in-dealership opportunities to spend time with cars is more limited than before. Genesis G90 slideshow
Mario Guzman, the mastermind behind the cannabis brand SHERBINSKIS, calls in for this week’s episode of ‘The Dropcast’ to speak with hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas about his business from its roots up to the present day and being dubbed “the Supreme of Marijuana.” As people are gearing up for that time of the year, Mario also shares smart ways to go about selecting your options. The quick hits begin by revisiting an event from earlier in the week as the cast pay their respects to Chynna Rogers, an up-and-coming rapper who passed away at the young age of 25. Then, things go even further back to last season when BEAMS came out with Crocs that were meant to be a part of a capsule collection with Highsnobiety. The Japanese label is back with new military-inspired sandals that the cast is all for (3:56). Another possible return is the Nike SB Dunk Low “Buck” from 2003 which could be returning later this year (5:20). The sneaker’s University of Oregon colorway happens to be the same green and gold that reps Jian’s alma mater, making it an automatic cop. Contemporary artist Daniel Arsham recently announced his newest project, a Uniqlo capsule in collaboration with Pokémon (6:48). As the first visual artist to be granted access to Pokémon’s archive, Arsham’s work is proving that the animated franchise continues to thrive. However, the current times are rough for young fashion designers, and LVMH recognizes that. Mario, Jian, and Noah support the group’s decision to cancel this year’s LVMH prize in order to set up a fund that supports previous winners (9:17). NBA has put a contingency plan in place which includes individual and team training for players before the season resumes (11:02). The cast comes up with novel but not impossible ideas for alternative strategies as they suggest players to battle it out, gladiator style. The fashion industry is also fighting tooth and nail to stay on top during the Covid-19 pandemic, with a new study positing that consumers will start to reach for heritage rather than hype products (15:28). Mario speaks on running his business successfully during the current crisis as well as the necessary traits for a lasting business (17:20). As Mario shares, SHERBINSKIS is the new kid on the block, but his philosophy represents the future for many new brands. He takes it back to the beginning when he was growing out of his garage in the early 2000s while being involved in the legalization movement, and the compassion shown towards veterans, disabled individuals, and the sick during that time in San Francisco (21:18). To put things into perspective, Mario reflects on progressing from worrying about getting shut down on a daily basis into being classified as an essential business. This episode’s Question of the Week (QOTW) asked Dropcast listeners to dig through their memories to the first time they smoked weed (28:07). Callers share the good and the bad, and Mario joins in with anecdotes of his first joint at the age of 11. In “What’d You Cop?” Mario treated himself to a Mercedes-Benz S-Class 560 but also did his share of giving through donations (35:38). This weekend, catch up on new episodes of ‘Vibe Check,’ Highsnobiety’s latest podcast which recently featured A$AP Ferg dropping his quarantine playlist and workout routine, and make sure to tune in to new episodes released every Tuesday and Thursday. A pair of German industrial giants this week officially kicked off a pilot project in the heart of Silicon Valley that, they hope, will pave the way for autonomous taxis in dense urban corridors. Daimler, the maker of Mercedes-Benz cars, and Bosch, an auto supplier and technology provider, first announced a joint effort to work on self-driving systems in 2017. On Monday, the companies unveiled the autonomous Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedans that will shuttle passengers from West San Jose to the city’s downtown, along the busy Stevens Creek Boulevard and San Carlos Street. The service, which will be initially limited to a select group of users, allows riders to book a trip on an app developed by Daimler’s mobility division. A safety driver will be in the vehicles to ensure nothing goes awry with the self-driving system — in accordance with California law — as the companies seek to determine how autonomous vehicles would work in a broader mobility ecosystem that includes public transit and car-sharing services. Ultimately, the companies hope to build a system with the highest classification of automation — SAE Levels 4 and 5 — capable of being installed across a wide variety of vehicle types and models. Daimler Mobility is also working on a fleet platform that would enable ride-sharing companies to easily incorporate self-driving Mercedes into their networks — a potentially important step given the problems some ride-sharing providers have experienced with autonomous technologies. The announcement appears to narrowly beat the forecast set by Bosch and Daimler two and a half years ago: to put driverless cars on city streets by the beginning of 2020.
