Baba's Deli is lovely. Owners Max and Aleesha have nailed what it means to offer excellent hospitality: friendly service, excellent sandwiches and $3 coffee. While getting chefs in to make sandwiches wasn't the original plan, it has worked out well for everyone, with friends, Daniel and Luke leaving stressful restaurant jobs to have fun every day wrangling the likes of Mama's Vodka, the chicken schnitzel sandwich with vodka sauce, Baba's Egg and Tayta's Falafel and then go home at 3pm to socialise, go to footie matches or do whatever they like that they haven't been able to do working in kitchens over the last twenty years. Daniel and Luke love working together at Baba's and this was a glorious chat.

[Content Warning]: Child sexual abuse, incestToday, Jan is joined by Aleesha Barlow, a sur-thrivivor of child abuse and the origin story of the Tell Somebody movement. As a child, she was molested by her maternal grandfather. At age 6, she told her aunt. Aleesha was then instructed by her 2 aunts and mother, to keep it a secret from the police and her own father with the promise the abuse would stop. Aleesha was still brought around her grandfather, and unfortunately the abuse continued until she was a teenager. It took Aleesha 20 years to tell her dad, but the moment she did, she felt an immediate weight lifted off her shoulders that she wants all survivors to feel, so she started the Tell Somebody movement. She shares many different survivors' stories on her platform, and she travels the world teaching kids to speak up and tell somebody if they are being touched inappropriately, with her Amazon's Best Seller “Tell Somebody: The Basics” children's book.Aleesha discusses the emotional impact of abuse on relationships and self-esteem, emphasizing the importance of breaking the abuse cycle. She faces challenges in getting schools to address child abuse and reaches out to families through her 'Reach the Unreachable' series. The conversation highlights the need for more support and funding for abuse survivors, and the importance of education and early intervention. Aleesha shares her experiences with public figures and emphasizes caution in trusting others. She and Jan stress the importance of educating children about body safety and encourage survivors to share their stories to break the cycle of abuse.Get Your Copy Of 'Tell Somebody'Follow Aleesha:TellSomebodyToday.comInsta: @_QueenLeesh / @TellSomebodyMovement TikTok Facebook If you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress or suicidal ideation, please access the resources below:National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: Call/Text 988National Sexual Assault Hotline (RAINN) : 1-800-656-HOPE (4673)National Alliance for Mental Illness: 1-800-950-6264Subscribe / Support / Contact:

We've crowned a new Listener for the new year during our 446th episode, and now it's time for Scott, Taylor, and Aleesha to combine forces against the pop culture powerhouse of Team JK. Joel & Kent may not know how to high-five each other, but their brains are full of useless trivia and their buzzer fingers are primed and ready. Will Team JK run away with it? Will Team Listener give Joel and Kent a run for their money? What are our feelings on water crackers? Why aren't we allowed to consult with one another? Listen and find out. Press play to hear even more judging from Zack and the peanut gallery.
Not every podcast celebrates their 446th episode, but we here at Baconsale do things differently. Since Chad has served two terms as The Listener, it's time for him to peacefully step down and allow someone else to fill that vital role. Our contestants, Aleesha, Scott, and Taylor, have all proved they have what it takes during our pre-quiz, and now we're going to test them on such pop culture topics as The Beatles, Baconsale brackets, movie cars, and late-night talk show hosts. We'll spill a little tea (and soda), take on some tricky math, get judged by the peanut gallery and, of course, play the game of Baconsale. Who will be our Listener for the next year? How many buzzer rounds will we do? Which question categories were inspired by Kent? Press play to find out!

Aleesha Barlow created Tell Somebody, Inc., an organization that works toward ending child abuse and silenced abuse of any kind. The Tell Somebody movement is about bringing awareness to parents that sexual abuse can and does happen. "I am a survivor of child abuse. I was molested by my maternal grandfather and at age 6, I told my aunt that her father was touching me inappropriately. She told my mother, and they confronted my grandfather. He admitted it. I was told to keep it a secret from the police and my own father, with the promise the abuse would stop. Unfortunately he continued, and I never spoke up again. After 20 years, my father asked me if I had ever been molested in my life, I told him yes. I felt all the weight, burden and shame I had been carrying all those years, immediately lifted off my shoulders and I want all survivors to feel that! You are not alone. Don't take it to the grave, Tell Somebody. It's time to heal!" —Aleesha Barlow

Can we talk about...? A podcast on leading for racial equity in philanthropy
Philanthropy Northwest's current and two preceding Board Chairs – Nichole June Maher, Aleesha Towns-Bain and Kevin Walker – kick off our pilot season on racial equity work at the governance level, stitching together memories across 13 years of the Philanthropy Northwest board's racial equity journey. Together they reflect on where the board was in 2010 – predominantly white and male, without an explicit commitment to centering racial equity – and where it is today in 2023, with 13 of the 18 directors being people of color, an explicit and unanimous commitment to centering racial equity, and on a journey to explore of how best to live into this commitment. They provide a transparent account of challenging moments and lessons learned along the way, emphasizing the importance of identifying and shifting the unwritten rules of boards that perpetuate exclusive practices and disproportionately harm board members of color. They also celebrate how over time, the board shifted from a culture that shied away from conflict towards one that embraced disagreement. “That was a really powerful growth period for the board,” Aleesha shares.

Aleesha Hansel is a wine writer, presenter and judge and she talks about being a role model for young women of colour who aspire to break into industries that have previously been dominated by white men. Aleesha has successfully made a name for herself by working in journalism, broadcasting, and even modelling! She fell in love with the anthropology of wine and the role it plays in culture and society. Her first book comes out March 2024! If you love a cheeky glass of chardonnay, or even if you can barely stand the taste of wine (like me) this conversation goes far deeper than the grapes! https://www.aleeshahansel.com/ https://www.instagram.com/aleeshahansel/?hl=en
